I love Drive but the script was a single piece of paper that said "guy drives around listening to awesome synthwave and kicks asses." With a single line of dialog - "I drive."
The matter with human beans, is that they is absolutely refusing to believe in anything unless they is actually seeing it right in front of their own schnozzles.
For real. Wasn’t necessarily the best movie ever, but the way it was told is so unique and fresh I loved it. The way that it was about a place instead of an event and/or singular person/group was great.
He earned $10mil for Blade Runner, $8mil for La La Land. Margot earned $10mil for Birds of Prey
Not sure an extra $2 mil adjusted for inflation and film content would garner this much buzz and praise for the script.
i think there must be something about the script that is 'fresh' that these people would want to make it
i cant imagine it would be provocative since they are using a trademark that is used for toys now but something about it must be different
this is my initial thought too but greta gerwig is not making this type of movie
i am thinking Lego Movie type stuff. not the exact same concept but something in that feel good realm (the ending)
I was also completely blown away by Little Women. Went in thinking it would probably be pretty good family fare. Came out of the theater thinking it may have been the best movie I’d ever seen.
You shouldn’t be downvoted for not liking something. For me, Ladybird was very nostalgic—I grew up in about the same era and went to Catholic school and dealt with some of the same parental issues the main character went through. I don’t think it’s a masterpiece, but it captured the time and the struggles of pushing against your parents and friends while also still loving them in a really believable way. Plus, the acting and directing were all very steady and confident.
Probably not the only one, and there’s a lot to love in the traditionalist take from the nineties. But for me Gerwig just nailed it by creating a film that’s both an adaptation and a meditation on womanhood, creativity, and personal agency on your own terms.
If Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling looked at the movie and thought yeah we'll do it, then there must be something to it. Only reason I haven't written it off immediately. They're at the point in their careers they get to pick and choose what they want to do, and they chose this. It must be good
Funny, I'm actually watching it right now. I wouldn't call it excellent but so far it's a pretty solid action movie. It's nice seeing Chris Evans hamming it up.
I know it's a generic ass movie, but man I was entertained till the last 10 mins. The final 10 mins were bit of a bummer.
I went with 0 expectations, just wanting to have a fun non-sensical movie experience and it was just that. So, I'm fine with th movie lol.
I dunno, I watched The Gray Man last night, it was alright. Definitely best enjoyed after a few bevvies, it’s quite silly, but it’s an action film, you’re supposed to suspend your disbelief and enjoy it a little
This is a Barbie movie. By definition it is about the paycheck not art. Just because you have a special love for a writer/director team doesn't mean they don't want to make money on films at least some of the time.
>Only reason I haven't written it off immediately.
Thats...idk. Why would you write it of immediately? Greta Gerwig is a phenomenal writer. Is it just because you're biased against "girly" things?
It’s literally a movie about a franchise of dolls whose whole point is vapid consumerism and horrible body standards, why would a single person over the age of 7 be interested in it if it wasn’t done by Gerwig
Notice he didnt say anything about Gerwig, but you did. He was going to write it off with Gerwig beng the writer/director.
Also, it's a super famous franchise that most living women in the US grew up with - there are lots of people who might want to take that and examine it.
Because it’s a movie based on a child’s toy. Toy/game movies have been *fine* recently but rarely worth spending a lot of brain power on outside of the first Lego Movie.
It seems so narrow minded to dismiss Barbie as a concept for a movie. Barbie has been at the center of so much discussion and debate about girlhood, femininity, fashion, toys. There is so much this story could be about.
There's a level of... Let's call it understandable cynicism, where people understand what a Barbie movie *could* be if it explored the social context around Barbie as a brand and what they represent, they just don't think a Barbie movie *will* be that (especially since a Barbie movie would have to get approval from the IP holders, who are likely to veto anything that isn't just an advert for the toys).
It speaks to Greta Gerwig's reputation and track record that people hear she's attached and go "Oh shit, this might be *good*".
Barbie as a brand might go further than normal though - given how much money has been thrown into making barbie progressive. Not that it's real - must sell some toys - but they've been consistent on their marketing for 5 years, and partially 10-15 years. People do work there and if you get enough people believing their own shill - you might see a slightly more interesting movie. Wouldn't satirize but could be critical.
On the other hand, how good can one reasonably expect a movie tied in with one of the most heavily marketed and commercialized toy franchises of the last century to be?
it's such an odd choice, maybe the script, the whole idea of the movie was different then or something. like they went from her who is (and i'm not making fun of her, just the truth) not exactly a person that reminds you of a barbie doll, to robbie who absolutely nails the look.
to me it would be like originally casting an out of shape 50 year old to play Ken lol
I think it's supposed to be something like manufactured Ken's and Barbies and then margot and Ryan's characters go from their home to the outside world
Barbie and Ken experience life relative to the life of the girl that plays with them. Think Toy Story but without sentient toys. The entire film is Barbie and Ken being played with.
As someone with kids of the right age forced to watch so much terrible stuff on repeat both Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventure (very wholesome) and Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse (funny) are way better than they should be.
From what I've read about, it sounds terrible, but I trust Margot Robbie and Gosling in picking good roles. What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Florida Project also sounded terrible to me when they were described to me but I love both those movies. I'm hoping it's good and not just lip service on an old topic that Simpsons nailed decades ago. "But she's got a new hat."
So who's writng this?
Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach?
Little Women, Lady Bird, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Life Aquatic between them? Well, that's a decent resume.
>“Finally, it’s happening. This has been coming my whole life,” Gosling told Variety on “The Gray Man” red carpet about playing Ken. “I felt like I was seeing myself [when I saw the viral first look Ken photo]. I felt seen. **I think a lot of Kens will feel seen when they see this. Gotta do it for the Kens. Nobody plays with the Kens**.”
He apparently really loves that role. I'm low-key hyped for that shit, haha
Yup. Imagine an actor going on a press tour being like, “Yeah, this movie is ok I guess. I just need a new house, so here I am.” We’d all love it but some studio exec would be pissed and blacklist them.
you can say what you enjoyed about filming it without revealing it's shit.
I imagine any job where you go do your lines for an hour and then spent 9 in a trailer playing video games or plowing your co-star was worth it.
Based on his body of work, he seems like he’s very much a quality over quantity guy. Can’t imagine he would take the role if he didn’t think it was a top quality script.
Last time, I checked we can leave comments on Reddit. And, who asked you to read my comment and reply back to me? You're clearly butthurt over my opinion lol. Get over it.
There's a nice nod to Gosling's character in **The Gray Man** regarding his upcoming role in this film...
“Extra ten million to the first guy to put a bullet in this Ken Doll’s brain.”
https://www.justjared.com/2022/07/22/the-gray-man-has-a-ken-doll-joke-about-ryan-gosling-and-the-directors-are-explaining-the-origin/
The movie has a surprisingly good pedigree. Very talented cast, director and screenwriter that you wouldn’t expect from a Barbie movie. But it’s an understandably hard sell to audiences. Because it’s a Barbie movie. Hard to imagine it’s actually good. But I hope it really surprises everyone.
I don't care if they resurrected Tenessee Williams' corpse to write it and had Paul Schrader supervising it. Unless they include "Barbie Girl" by Aqua in the soundtrack, this movie's dead to me.
Greta Gertwig Directing alongside great actors Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the leads. Idk, I’m kinda excited for it. It will either be really good or really shit. There is no middle ground here
Noah Baumbach: makes and directs movies about artsy white people with first world problems where nothing happens and that feel like a flat line. They are always branded as tragicomedies, but they are neither funny nor sad
Literally everyone: "OMG, look at absolute perfection that is Noah Baumbach, what an absolute genius He is.'
Every other writer whose movie he's ever been in: "You son of a bitch!"
Drive, Blade Runner, La la land -> yawn Barbie -> that's my shit
I love Drive but the script was a single piece of paper that said "guy drives around listening to awesome synthwave and kicks asses." With a single line of dialog - "I drive."
Goddamn that’s so cool
He was a real hero.
And a human bean.
The matter with human beans, is that they is absolutely refusing to believe in anything unless they is actually seeing it right in front of their own schnozzles.
A real human being.
He also says, “okay” and “sure”
Don't forget the stage direction *(stares into the distance)*
Irene: "Do you want a glass of water?" Driver: *looks at her*
Yeah
Doesn’t he also say “toothpick?” Edit: maybe he just offers the toothpick wordlessly. No way to be sure.
He does in fact offer the kid a toothpick verbally lol.
Nightcall was an absolute banger for that movie.
10/10 unironically
As sparse as the dialogue seemed in Drive, Only God Forgives makes it look verbose.
That movie has more colors than words.
Number of colors: red Number of words: looks at hands
[удалено]
At least the title was accurate: only God could forgive that movie.
TAKE OFF THE FUCKING DRESS!!!!!
[удалено]
“Reaaaal human bean!” (Love the vibes of this movie)
guy stares at woman not saying anything for 90 minutes, but he's hot so it's romantic
The Place Beyond the Pines gets no love rip
For real. Wasn’t necessarily the best movie ever, but the way it was told is so unique and fresh I loved it. The way that it was about a place instead of an event and/or singular person/group was great.
Only problem with that movie is the last 1/3 isn’t nearly as strong as the rest of the movie and that brings it down.
Drive was so good, he had a ton of lines too
The Nice Guys has gotta be up there too
[удалено]
He earned $10mil for Blade Runner, $8mil for La La Land. Margot earned $10mil for Birds of Prey Not sure an extra $2 mil adjusted for inflation and film content would garner this much buzz and praise for the script.
Yea at the very least we are all falling for the hype, whether it real or manufactured
If all Gosling wanted was money he'd do more franchise movies or comic book movies. He purposely squeezed this movie into his schedule.
I agree. He definitely had the cache to do whatever the fuck he wanted after The Notebook.
i think there must be something about the script that is 'fresh' that these people would want to make it i cant imagine it would be provocative since they are using a trademark that is used for toys now but something about it must be different
[удалено]
Sounds like “The Brady Bunch” movies.
this is my initial thought too but greta gerwig is not making this type of movie i am thinking Lego Movie type stuff. not the exact same concept but something in that feel good realm (the ending)
Because it's Greta and Noah. Enough said really.
Narrator: It *wasn’t*
The amount of buzz around the script is insane. Even before production started. There’s definitely something there.
After Little Women, Greta Gerwig gets so much goodwill from me that I can easily believe her script to Barbie is nothing short of amazing.
After Lady Bird, Geta Gerwig got so much goodwill from me that I was able to easily believe her script to Little Women is nothing short of amazing
Also true. I think I’m just still reeling from how absolutely sublime Little Women turned out to be.
Yeah Little Women was amazing lol I watched it myself and then I watched it with my wife and then with my parents lol
I was also completely blown away by Little Women. Went in thinking it would probably be pretty good family fare. Came out of the theater thinking it may have been the best movie I’d ever seen.
Why do people like Lady Bird? What am I missing?
If it don’t float your boat, then it don’t float your boat :)
Nothing, you aren't missing anything, you simply may not like the film, and that is a-ok.
I thought the writing and Saoirse Ronan stood out. It felt fresh for a coming-of-age movie, which is a genre that's been done to death.
Also written by Noah Baumbach, which is promising. Marriage Story was fantastic!
Am I the only one who didn’t like the new little women? The version with Susan Sarandon and Claire Danes was MILES better.
Probably not the only one, and there’s a lot to love in the traditionalist take from the nineties. But for me Gerwig just nailed it by creating a film that’s both an adaptation and a meditation on womanhood, creativity, and personal agency on your own terms.
Yeah she was able to put her own twist on it while still honoring the original
Press tour has started I see.
If Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling looked at the movie and thought yeah we'll do it, then there must be something to it. Only reason I haven't written it off immediately. They're at the point in their careers they get to pick and choose what they want to do, and they chose this. It must be good
Ryan gosling did also choose the gray man tho at this point in his career too
I’d choose to work with Ana De Armas as well.
Shit, and Chris Evans
I also choose this guy’s Ana De Armas.
Money talks. Especially Netflix money throwing.
Yeah. I got a 25% pay bump going from Disney to Netflix. Sometimes it’s all about the money.
He's working with the Russo 's coming hot off Endgame, who wouldn't tbh.
people who don't want to be in dogshit (cherry) to mediocre movies (the gray man)
It's not like they knew before the time it was going to be shit. The script will only take you so far after all.
Funny, I'm actually watching it right now. I wouldn't call it excellent but so far it's a pretty solid action movie. It's nice seeing Chris Evans hamming it up.
Yeah I enjoyed it for those reasons. Generic action movie, I'm fucking down.
I know it's a generic ass movie, but man I was entertained till the last 10 mins. The final 10 mins were bit of a bummer. I went with 0 expectations, just wanting to have a fun non-sensical movie experience and it was just that. So, I'm fine with th movie lol.
Why? Is the movie bad? I was hoping for something like The Replacement Killers
I mean it was a turn your brain off action movie. Not horrible, not great. It achieves its function nicely.
I dunno, I watched The Gray Man last night, it was alright. Definitely best enjoyed after a few bevvies, it’s quite silly, but it’s an action film, you’re supposed to suspend your disbelief and enjoy it a little
Well tbf it’s good money and fun to watch. Must have been fun to shoot as well
>If Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling looked at the movie and thought yeah we'll do it, then there must be something to it. Yeah the paycheck
What about Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach? I'll believe those two (plus Ryan Gosling) are selling out when I see it with my own eyes.
This is a Barbie movie. By definition it is about the paycheck not art. Just because you have a special love for a writer/director team doesn't mean they don't want to make money on films at least some of the time.
More likely Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. If it was just about money there's probably a dozen easier projects they could've agreed to.
Money, my dude.
Or, hear me out, they were both offered a fuckton of money for starring in the movie
>Only reason I haven't written it off immediately. Thats...idk. Why would you write it of immediately? Greta Gerwig is a phenomenal writer. Is it just because you're biased against "girly" things?
if i had to venture a wild guess on his behalf, it’s because it’s a movie about Barbie, a toy figure for little girls?
It’s literally a movie about a franchise of dolls whose whole point is vapid consumerism and horrible body standards, why would a single person over the age of 7 be interested in it if it wasn’t done by Gerwig
I think the person's point is that Gerwig is a much better reason to not write off the movie than the stars of Suicide Squad and Gray Man
Tbf, the Netflix barbie show was pretty damn surreal and hilarious Also don't do Swan Lake like that 😂
Why are yall booing me, im right. Who here hasn't seen Life at the Dreamhouse. Missing out entirely.
I mean Greta Gerwig and her husband Noah Baumbach wrote it. Shit I can't believe this film might win Oscars.
Yeah people are dismissing this because it's Barbie and it is hyperbole but with those two behind the script I'd think it is probably pretty great
It seems so narrow minded to dismiss Barbie as a concept for a movie.
On the other hand, how good can one reasonably expect a movie tied in with one of the most heavily marketed and commercialized toy franchises of the last century to be?
The Lego films are a huge hit, and very high quality
That's my problem with most people today. They just outwardly dismiss movies as shit before even watching a trailer or the movie. It's frustrating.
*Sonic the Hedgehog* got Oscar buzz, things can change lol
Lmao if Sonic the Hedgehog was directed by Martin Scorsese it would.
if they wrote it in their sleep it would still be better than Gray Man tbh
It's the Citizen Kane of toy movies.
Does that make Toy Story “The Godfather”?
Lol I can only hope it’s that dark.
Ken better be better at sports than Alan was or at least less of a loser. Damn Alan
Complete liability on defense
What exactly is the plot of this movie?
Just a barbie girl in a barbie world I imagine.
I would imagine life in plastic, is fantastic.
Yet her life in plastic is not quite fantastic.
I hope it is less "Barbie girl" and more "Fake plastic trees"
Barbie’s *Existential Nightmare* set
"Therapist Barbie sold separately. Mattel, Inc. does not condone, endorse, or encourage the abuse of narcotics or alcohol."
As opposed to real plastic trees?
>I'm guessing it's like the Brady Bunch Spoof where Ken and Barbie are totally over the top and move into a boring, real world neighborhood.
just skimmed the wiki, not much info i did see that amy schumer was originally to play barbie, so i'm glad that didn't happen
god that would have been a nightmare
it's such an odd choice, maybe the script, the whole idea of the movie was different then or something. like they went from her who is (and i'm not making fun of her, just the truth) not exactly a person that reminds you of a barbie doll, to robbie who absolutely nails the look. to me it would be like originally casting an out of shape 50 year old to play Ken lol
I think it's supposed to be something like manufactured Ken's and Barbies and then margot and Ryan's characters go from their home to the outside world
I’m hoping it’s absurd comedy.
If it has a lot of sharp satire I will probably enjoy it
Barbie and Ken experience life relative to the life of the girl that plays with them. Think Toy Story but without sentient toys. The entire film is Barbie and Ken being played with.
The plot is under wraps. Something about a fish out of water story is all there is.
"Movie actor says positive things about movie he's in"
Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse was a surprisingly good cartoon
My guilty pleasure tho frfr
Was this the one with Raquelle? Cause that shit was high key hilarious. Like as someone in their 20s, I laughed out loud multiple times.
As someone with kids of the right age forced to watch so much terrible stuff on repeat both Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventure (very wholesome) and Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse (funny) are way better than they should be.
Smh I got downvoted for saying this in a top comment. I'll die on the hill of this show and the Swan Lake movie
Honestly, all of the barbie cartoon features were great.
I’m seriously incredibly excited to see this movie
BREAKING NEWS: Ryan Gosling doesn't remember anything before movie 'Barbie'
If you’d asked me five years ago how excited I’d be for a Barbie movie …
'Best Post I've Ever Clicked'
Writer: And in this scene you make out with Margot Robbie Ryan Gosling: Truly, your brilliance graces the theater.
Feels like he's talked more about Barbie than the actual movie he is currently out promoting
Move over, every other movie that didn't have Barbie in it.
He was in Remember the Titans and the Big Short lol
He only learned to read very recently.
Better than DRIVE, or THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES? Or BLADERUNNER 2049? If so, this Barbie movie is gonna be a game changer
“Best Script I’ve Ever Read” is a euphemism for “the movie is horrible, but it isn’t my fault.
Well, he does seem like such a Ken...
Get some fuckin glasses.
Three tickets for Barbie please
So who's writng this? Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach? Little Women, Lady Bird, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Life Aquatic between them? Well, that's a decent resume.
Exactly why I believe the hyped. They written/been in some of my favorite movies. It'll be interesting to have barbie up there on my list lol
Move over La La Land/Blade Runner 2049. There is a new queen in the town
>“Finally, it’s happening. I'm low-key hyped for that shit, haha
I honestly think he might be suffering from a mental breakdown.
And it's probably the easiest decision not to see the film I've ever made
You're missing out.
The Barbie movie's going to make us cry, guys.
I'm gonna take a wild guess that isn't true. Lol
Have you seen a Greta or Noah film?
I just know one makes movies about divorces and one makes movies about coming of age women.
I’m so

Most of his other movies he barely has any lines, so maybe he doesn't have much to compare to!
He’s trolling
Based on his body of work, he seems like he’s very much a quality over quantity guy. Can’t imagine he would take the role if he didn’t think it was a top quality script.
There was a script???
Feels like a headline from The Onion
I had high hopes for this film until I saw Will Ferrel in roller skates. Oh well. In Gerwig we trust!
Relax everybody, Ryan Gosling never reads scripts
🙄
This is a chick flick and Ken looks goofy instead of cool.
Uhhh... Yeah?
...so not for me.
Okay but who asked?
Last time, I checked we can leave comments on Reddit. And, who asked you to read my comment and reply back to me? You're clearly butthurt over my opinion lol. Get over it.
Oh I thought you were just stating facts about the movie for some reason
Did... you ever play with a Ken? Like did you see his clothes?
HES JUST LIKE ME

Do people from r/movies really not know who Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are? Acting as this was a sonic movie or something lol

Citizen Kane but good.
And I bleach my asshole
He just like me fr
Ryan Gosling hasn't been in that many good movies. I honestly wondered if he was literate. So this isn't that shocking.
This motherfucker was in bladerunner 2042 this movie better be insane
