Brad Pitts best animated film is still Cool World

Simpin_Dva

kerblaam7

Brad Pitts best film

Fangore

A Letterboxd review of Shang Chi: "After we finished the movie, my friend turned to me and said 'that's my favorite foreign film' and he meant it."

summers458

I was in a lecture for my Editing and Post uni course and some guy said, without a hint of irony, "Yeah I love Chinese cinema and culture, like Kung Fu Panda". I had to stop from pissing myself laughing

Plato_the_Platypus

Tbf, Chinese does love that movie and think its accurate to their wuxia stories

KVMechelen

China literally agrees with this fam

I hate Britain. I hate Christmas.

Meapcuteee

Bullet Train doesn't have a Deadpool cameo tho while Deadpool 2 actually has Deadpool as a cameo

notatallboydeuueaugh

Technically Deadpool 2 has a Bullet Train cameo

probablyuntrue

Holy shit Deadpool walked in

notatallboydeuueaugh

Bullet Train literally got electrocuted in Deadpool 2 🫣

Psykpatient

I mean >!Bullet train has a deadpool cameo!<

benabramowitz18

And he has the correct amount of screen time and lines in Bullet Train! (Which is zero.)

GoldandBlue

And yet I still groaned at seeing his face everywhere.

[deleted]

Groans of pleasure

Delta_Knight17

I liked Channing Tatum's cameo.

I think you haven't watched the movie.

TabletopParlourPalm

I'm from Taiwan, and I can't wrap my head around how so many kinophiles give mediocre to straight up shit Taiwanese (or Asian in general) films crazy high ratings. Like is it because they are speaking exotic languages??

benishben

Yes

DrunkenAsparagus

I think it's hard to evaluate acting performances in a film that's subtitled. You're switching between looking at their faces and the subtitles. It's hard to tell what's stilted dialog and acting or just different conventions. It definitely bleeds into exotifying stuff, "It's foreign and exotic. I am therefore very cool and cultured for liking it." However, it's usually fun to branch out, and easy to write off possible flaws as novel.

joqagamer

Best example of this is the english speaking actors in squid game. Their lines sound awful when spoken in english, but its the same style of dialogue writing present throughout the series.

KVMechelen

Doesnt help that their personalities were criminally cringe either

JessieJ577

Plus we can’t tell dialect in a foreign language.

ARandomWoollyMammoth

It’s why shitty actions franchises like Fast and Furious are even more popular in other countries

_corleone_x

It's not just that. I'm Latin American, and while there's good cinema around here, there's not enough of a budget to pay for good CGI/special effects, so you'll never see that kinda movie from here. It's just that CGI/special effects look more impressive if you aren't used to it.

thatwitchguy

Also not that many break through into the mainstream and unless you have an outside reason (IE in my case Kurosawa films because they inspired George Lucas) you probably won't look for them

p-_ber

I dunno bro, I've been playing Yakuza 0 recently and it has some of the most intense and raw acting I've seen in a video game even if I don't understand a single goddamn word that they're saying.

KingMario05

Right? Even when *Like a Dragon* re-introduced a (***freakishly*** good) dub, I imagine many people just kept playing it with subtitles. Kiryu and Majima's native VAs have become *that* iconic, and it helps that Sega/Atlus US are among the best localizers in the business.

PhoShizzity

Technically speaking either Judgement or FOTN:LP (idk which came first) reintroduced the dub to the series, and yeah the dub is fantastic (especially Greg Chun/Nanba singing Baka Mitai).

gyropyro32

Yeah but that's Yakuza. Like obviously there's good, and incredible acting but they're mostly referring to the mid shows the original commenter was talking about.

thailannnnnnnnd

How would you know? Many animes has “intense and raw” voice acting b cause they scream and realllllly put in emotion. But from what I’ve read it’s still cringe and unnatural. You’ve really gotta ask a Japanese person to evaluate how the Yakuza actually feels. I mean more objectively.

xXHuhXx

if you can feel the subtle emotions of the voice actor, then it's good voice acting in my book

thailannnnnnnnd

subtle 😂

31_hierophanto

>I think it's hard to evaluate acting performances in a film that's subtitled. You're switching between looking at their faces and the subtitles. It's hard to tell what's stilted dialog and acting or just different conventions. It definitely bleeds into exotifying stuff, "It's foreign and exotic. I am therefore very cool and cultured for liking it." However, it's usually fun to branch out, and easy to write off possible flaws as novel. This could also apply to any weeb who thinks sub >>>> dub, since there's apparently "more emotion" in Japanese.

DrunkenAsparagus

I mean there's stuff that I don't notice but my partner does with Kurosawa, bigger budget stuff, and Isle of the Dogs. It's not just low-budget stuff.

PTI_brabanson

It makes a lot of sense. Subpar voice acting in your native language is grating. You're very unlikely to notice it in a language you're not proficient in.

meowchin

That's something only an American could say. Any person who watched more than a few movies with subtitles will read them subconsciously in a split second and will not have a problem paying attention to what's happening on the screen.

DrunkenAsparagus

I watch a lot of foreign movies. It's not *that* big of a distraction. It's not hard to see what's going on, but it's a small thing that distracts from the actor's face and which words they're saying when. Conversational conventions are also just different in different countries. If something comes off as stilted, I don't know if that's a translation issue, reflective of different norms, or just shoddy filmmaking. As for translation issues, they make it a fundamentally different experience from watching a performance in tongue that you're fluent in. My partner speaks passable Japanese and will often point out fun word play in subbed anime that's just not in the captions at all.

meowchin

Anime translation is a different beast. Anime translators are seriously underpaid (below livable wage) and often have very short time to finish their work due to the simulcast nature of modern anime distribution. And many of them simply aren't very good translators. Anime translation quality has really dropped since fansubbing was replaced with official distributions. Fansubs had their quirks, for sure, but I think on average they were better at translating the word plays and jokes. And the same problems apply to manga translation, unfortunately.

7isagoodletter

Why would them being American matter? Do Americans read slower or something? Also reading subtitles definitely plays a part. One thing I've noticed in particular is that you can't always catch what words are being emphasized by the actors, especially if the sentence structure of the language is different from the subtitles. If an actor is speaking Japanese and emphasizes a word at the beginning of their line, that emphasis might not carry over into English because the word might be at the end of the sentence when translated.

MajorScipioAfricanus

I think they assumed American because the stereotype is that Americans almost exclusively watch English language films while rarely watching 'foreign' films which is why they are not used to subtitles.

gyropyro32

Same goes for certain slang/accents. Like some accents are easy to hear, best example being Goku but all Japanese sounds the same to a foreigner unless the actor draws big emphasis.

[deleted]

You’re going to have to provide some examples with that claim.

potpan0

Westerners gave *Parasite* really good reviews but it's so fucking *boring*. I mean who gives a shit about a bunch of *cleaners*?!

As do I. :(

waterhybrid13

Broker would probably be my pick. Boring, uninteresting film with unremarkable acting.

[deleted]

I dunno if enough people have seen it for there be a general consensus yet. If anything early overhype for it is likely due to people being enamored by the exclusivity of watching it + fanboys of the director.

meowchin

Broker was my favorite fim of our local festival, but it was the first Kore-eda film I've seen. On the other hand, I didn't like Decision to Leave at all, even though I'm a Park Chan-wook fan.

RandomMexicanDude

any examples?

waterhybrid13

Broker for sure. I made another comment above.

MizunoZui

Mfw the domestic box office winners More Than Blue (2018) has a 3.0 and Man in Love (2021) has a 3.4 on Letterboxed (those two were hot garbage)

[deleted]

Got any examples?

lulaloops

This comment is meaningless without some examples, Tsai Ming-liang, Hou Hsiao-hsien and Edward Yang are some of the greatest to ever do it. And that's not just a language thing.

be_some1

Did you like The Sadness?

thecomeric

Have you seen The Sadness? I really fucked with that movie.

Randolf22

Same with arabic, sometimes they just straight out speak Indian or Farsi and try to pass it as arabic

starm4nn

My film class had us watch *In the mood for love* and god was it boring.

myshtummyhurt-

Yup! Truly not the best Wong Kar Wai

BehindYourWalls

No it’s more nuanced than that (Yes)

_corleone_x

Letterboxd is particularly guily of this. There's a lot of Asian trash movies that people rate 5 stars and call it kino or some shit. Not gonna judge them for that because I enjoy trashy movies too, but if the movie was just a Western b-movie they'd hate it and rate it 1 star or something.

SupremeLeaderMatt

One is capeshit and the other isn’t, do the math

VikVrc

I will not take Bullet train (2022) slander

Mr_Arrogant

Its in my top 5 of the year, no slander here

anthonyg1500

Out of curiosity what are your top 5 right now?

PM_ME_YOUR__INIT__

Bullet Train is one

Mr_Arrogant

In no particular order: RRR Everything, Everywhere All at Once Top Gun: Maverick Bullet Train Men

anthonyg1500

Solid list, a lot of overlap with mine actually. In no order as well; RRR, Everything Everywhere, Top Gun, Marcel the Shell, The Batman (but in fairness I’m a Batman nerd so I’m biased. Nope might belong there)

Mr_Arrogant

I'd maybe swap out Men for The Batman tbh (or maybe bobs burgers the movie)

anthonyg1500

Ok I feel better about The Batman being there. Bobs Burgers was really fun, I wish I saw it in theaters to support them. But dude, Marcel the Shell, I can’t recommend it enough if you haven’t seen it. I expected 80 mins of decent one liners and that would’ve been fine but I laughed, I cried, I learned, it did not need to go that hard. Walking back from the theater me and my friend were talking about it and some random guy flagged us down to ask “hey what movie are you talking about, it sounds amazing” and he definitely thought it’d be this prestigious indie drama starring like Ethan Hawke or something and we had to say “you know Marcel the Shell from YouTube like 15 years ago…” def check it out

VikVrc

I havent watched eeaao yet, should i?

Mr_Arrogant

Yes. It's very fun and charming, extremely entertaining

VikVrc

Isnt the plot based on putting shit up your ass

[deleted]

No it is not, there is a moment in the film that involves that, but it’s not the plot lol.

VikVrc

Ok

[deleted]

Definitely worth a watch, I didn’t really gel with it, but most people are getting a lot out of it.

anthonyg1500

It’s very weird but with purpose and it’s also creative and heartfelt and fun. I’d def say watch it

eldorado362

No everyone knows Love and Thunder is #1

KingMario05

Great list! Think mine is (in no particular order) The Batman, EEAAO, Sonic 2, TG Maverick and Nope. Bullet Train doesn't make it, but it comes ***very*** close.

[deleted]

Have you seen nope? Cause IMO that’s a top three

Mr_Arrogant

It's only out in Ireland this weekend, so it's definitely on my list, love Peele's output

Mr_Arrogant

I have now seen nope. Excellent film

TemporarySalt2999

Watch Apollo 10 1/2 by linklater netflix fucking buried it with no marketing

PhoShizzity

I was gonna see RRR in cinemas one time! Except my mom died that day so I decided to watch Sonic 2 instead. Still gotta get around to RRR at some point, heard (really, really) good things.

[deleted]

RRR as your #1 is based

VikVrc

Ok

MeLuvBlobsInnit

I have a full homo crush on Brad Pitt so yes.

RandomMexicanDude

And bad bunny

IdentityTheftWasTake

And El Muerto?

Delta_Knight17

Aaron Taylor-Johnson had the best drip.

800020

As someone who’s read the original novel it’s based on, I’m actually pretty curious to see what (bits and pieces) they’ve kept of the Japanese text in there.

Mexicancandi

I think the train obsession is still there

Befast1515

Question. Having read the novel, do you think it could have been adapted as a mystery movie? Because the plot definitely gave me mystery movie vibes.

800020

It's been a while since I read it, but I don't think so. There's no real central mystery to be solved, snd the twists aren't necessarily things that are set up with clues or anything. Edit: The previous work in the series, Grasshopper, has more mystery elements to it, though I'd say it's still closer to a thriller (don't bother watching the movie, it's pretty terrible)

Delta_Knight17

The original idea was to keep it a pretty gritty action movie in the vein of Die Hard but they changed it to action-comedy.

Befast1515

Honestly I would have much preferred that. Certain deaths *cough cough* >!*tangerine*!< lost pretty much all emotional impact because of comedy reasons.

phoenixpoptart

Aha you fell right into my trap

yokohama_enjoyer

Bullet Train is unironically a better movie in every aspect imo 🤷🏻‍♂️

Heroicshrub

Especially the part when Brad Pitt calls a woman a Karen!! 🤯😂😂😂

Drakeadrong

Maybe I missed it but I don’t think that line was in the movie. It was just in the trailer

bananabread_boi9

Not gonna lie, Bullet Train was kinda lit.

Spell6421

oh god the first bullet train mcj meme… this begins a new era of jerking over the same move for a month or two before finally moving on

my_pets_names

Well it isn’t a superhero movie, so I doubt it.

phoenixpoptart

Uh technically I was first but who’s counting

TheNightstroke

[I'm counting.](https://www.reddit.com/r/moviescirclejerk/comments/wiu16a/me_walking_out_of_bullet_train_2022_in_spite_of/)

Sinnaj63

Literally me

shapeless_void

Can someone here tell me if this actually has a Deadpool stink to it? I wanna see Brad Pitt, I do not want to see Deadpool 2 (2).

DoctorEmperor

I’d compare it favorably to *Hot Fuzz* (but with more action). Not as good mind you, but in the ballpark at least

DameDaNeHamburger

No luck with them killers then eh?

phoenixpoptart

Just the one killer, actually

Llama-Nation

I didn't really find it funny (I laughed once) but it was more charming than irritating. I was pretty invested in all of the stories and the characters which is more than I can say for similar movies. A solid 7/10.

Wk1360

Bullet train is what all those Netflix originals in the vein of Ryan Reynolds are trying so damn hard to be. Charming & goofy action without being unwatchably obnoxious.

cig-packet

It's worth a watch, the comedy isn't so different but the delivery is a lot less self-insistant. It's a lot less 'look at me I'm funny' but still tries pretty hard. I think it succeeds at what it's trying at so gets away with it.

shapeless_void

Alright perfect thank you, you get exactly what I’m talking about

Colalbsmi

It doesn't have the gross out humor that Deadpool has, I don't think there is any mention of sex or buttholes or really any other middle school locker room talk. The characters are more likeable and it's easier to be invested in them as well.

KingMario05

Well, it's got likeable characters and ***no*** weird innuendos, so I'd say it's worth your time. (More like *Three Stooges* meets *Die Hard,* just... on a Japanese bullet train, lmao.) >!And while Deadpool is in it, he gets no lines and is implied to be much, ***MUCH*** colder than he usually is.!<

OJBM03

It's worth a watch but pitt is probably the worst part about it just doing mcu quips but everyone else is lots of fun

HeEatsFood

Pitt thinks he’s spiderman

[deleted]

Yeah it absolutely reeks of it I’m afraid. Pitt’s literally playing a role that feels like it was tailored to Ryan Reynolds as well.

TheNightstroke

To be fair, Pitt plays it in a way that's a lot more likeable than Reynolds, IMO. I cannot *stand* Reynolds, but I thought Pitt was... fine, even if he was one of the weaker parts of the movie.

BehindYourWalls

Every damn time

DoctorEmperor

Literally *not* me because I *liked* Deadpool 2!

TheLionsblood

Deadpool 2 - racebent Domino, woke 😡 Bullet Train - whitewashed characters from the novel, apolitical 😌 /s

DiabeticRhino97

No issues with Deadpool except Deadpool sometimes, but bullet train rules

frokiedude

Both of them are amazing. I dont care if this isnt the kinophile opinion but i think both of them are way better than most action movies nowadays.

ThatpersonKyle

Deadpool 2 is decent if it’s been years since you’ve seen Deadpool 1, because Deadpool comedy gets old fast

[deleted]

I've heard that bullet train is actually enjoyable to people who don't jerk off to CEO of MILFS content though

Drakeadrong

Bullet Train was unironically amazing and 47% of critics are on crack for saying otherwise

[deleted]

Something something Kino.

phoenixpoptart

Nah the difference is Bullet Train is good.

LittleMissReboot

They’re both stinky

EbolaGrant

Is the movie good? I'm debating seeing that or bodies bodies bodies tomorrow

KingTyranitar

I loved it

blosweed

Do you guys hate Deadpool 2? Thought it was way better than the usual marvel trash.

[deleted]

Does bullet train have deadpool tier insufferable dialogue? Also the action scenes in deadpool are super underwhelming. I can’t remember a good action comedy since Rush Hour (the Other Guys was pretty good, but that was more comedy than action)

upeter01

God damn i hate Bullet Train so much. It somehow feels even more Deadpool-y than Deadpool itself, it's like everything that bothers me about those movies turned up to a hundred. "oooh wouldn't it be sooo funny if the murderer was obsessed with something children generally like? Wouldn't it be so funny if we couldn't write a movie to save our lives but pointed it out 50 times? Haha look at the protagonist he's so tired of it all! Haha look it's that actor you recognize!"

VentiMochaFappuccino

Found the Diesel. (But also you are kind of right)

[deleted]

[удалено]

upeter01

Lol, you can obviously disagree but stuff that irritates me about the movie isn't magically gonna disappear just because it's from a book. Also just because i expressed a negative opinion doesn't mean i'm not calm. I know it officially has nothing to do with marvel but it's exactly like a marvel movie

Mexicancandi

I guess

[deleted]

Loosely based on a Japanese book. The writing in the film is very inline with Deadpool/ that sort of Marvel fluff.

AutoModerator

"Based" is a deesphobic term. This is the first warning, please absent from using it or face a ban. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/moviescirclejerk) if you have any questions or concerns.*

schmarr1

I will NOT be watching bullet train (the YouTube ads were annoying)

BakedBeans77

Bullet Train was terrible. It was trying so damn hard to be cool

RevolverPhoenix

But Bullet Train was a mockery of stylized murder flicks that try their hardest to be cool.

BigIvan24

Naw bro how they the same like at all

the_3-14_is_a_lie

You're forgetting Tolo Tolo: Italian quirky comedy with immigrants and Mussolini reference (this last one is just a coincidence, totally not the whole reason why we love the film)
