I’ve won plenty of games with underwhelming commanders just like this. People don’t know what to expect and I don’t have to worry about people blowing up my commander usually. Unless I get near lethal commander damage. Busted commanders can be fun, but I’d rather play a underwhelming commander that I can build to be good
New player here so I need someone to explain this to me like I'm 5. Is a Summon Legend an old term for creature? If not, how does oneplay it/where's its spot on the play mat? Lastly, what does cumulative in this case mean? Your second upkeep you get 2 life, third then 3, etc?
Okay so I’m the ancient days of magic summon used to mean creature. Summon legend means legendary creature. Many cards like this now days have been errata’d to have a creature type. In Morinfen’s case he is a horror. It’s spot on the playmat is the same as any other creature. And yes, first upkeep you pay 1 life, then second upkeep you pay 2, then 3, and so on. If you don’t pay the cumulative upkeep you sacrifice the permanent
OK so the life works the other way around, I thought it meant you get life with each round instead of having to pay since it doesn't specifically say that imo but I guess newer cards have also been reworded to avoid possible confusion.

I honestly feel like it’d be great at controlling the board state. There’s so many good upkeep triggers that would get shut down because of it. And it’s amazing cause it’s only upside for me
I think next time I play tabletop with friends we will pick each others commanders the week before and try to see what garbage we can come up with, definitely seems more fun than everyone running meta.

Not a combo really, but you could run conjurer’s closet to reset the cumulative upkeep every turn to keep it manageable (and flicker other higher-value creatures when you have them in play)

What happens with this card and something like a can't sac effect? Like from [[Jon irenicus, shattered one]] do they have to pay? Or choose not to, and keep it anyway?
Yes you can choose not to pay the life and keep it around. I’d still put him in there though

You definitely will fly under the rader when it comes to threat assessment. Playing busted commanders is a doubled edged sword sometimes.
I’ve won plenty of games with underwhelming commanders just like this. People don’t know what to expect and I don’t have to worry about people blowing up my commander usually. Unless I get near lethal commander damage. Busted commanders can be fun, but I’d rather play a underwhelming commander that I can build to be good
New player here so I need someone to explain this to me like I'm 5. Is a Summon Legend an old term for creature? If not, how does oneplay it/where's its spot on the play mat? Lastly, what does cumulative in this case mean? Your second upkeep you get 2 life, third then 3, etc?
Okay so I’m the ancient days of magic summon used to mean creature. Summon legend means legendary creature. Many cards like this now days have been errata’d to have a creature type. In Morinfen’s case he is a horror. It’s spot on the playmat is the same as any other creature. And yes, first upkeep you pay 1 life, then second upkeep you pay 2, then 3, and so on. If you don’t pay the cumulative upkeep you sacrifice the permanent
OK so the life works the other way around, I thought it meant you get life with each round instead of having to pay since it doesn't specifically say that imo but I guess newer cards have also been reworded to avoid possible confusion.
Oh I didn’t even realize you meant life gain. But I feel like they could print a cumulative upkeep lifegain card and it wouldn’t be that broken. They need to bring the mechanic back

It’s pay life N times where in is the amount of age counters on it. I’m sure you know what cumulative upkeep is lol I’ll stop myself while I’m ahead. But yes to answer your question it’s pay life.

Its great because its not backbreaking, but just makes your deck a little better, and will randomly shut off minor stuff for opponents.
I honestly feel like it’d be great at controlling the board state. There’s so many good upkeep triggers that would get shut down because of it. And it’s amazing cause it’s only upside for me

I think next time I play tabletop with friends we will pick each others commanders the week before and try to see what garbage we can come up with, definitely seems more fun than everyone running meta.

Not a combo really, but you could run conjurer’s closet to reset the cumulative upkeep every turn to keep it manageable (and flicker other higher-value creatures when you have them in play)
That’s phenomenal, Im gonna have to add that to the deck. I have stuff that gets rid of counters, stuff that when Morinfen dies they get returned to the battlefield. But this is actually perfect

Correct, but Jon says they can't be sacrificed, so this means it's no longer a choice to pay. If they can pay, they must pay.
OP is right. Your opponent if you give this to them can ignore the upkeep and keep the beater because can’t be sacrificed.
Right, just re read the rule. Cumulative is trigger, I was 6 state base loop, but it's not a state based action check it's a trigger.
