Proxies have always been central to the cEDH community. We play against the player not the wallet. That being said, I proxy all my cEDH decks and slowly buy the ‘real’ versions as my budget allows. Most people in the community are in this boat. As cEDH gains in popularity (I think it will blow up) you will see more proxies but also more people in the format who are in the market for the genuine cards. It won’t have any meaningful impact on the downside and will likely cause shortages in stock longer term.

sucksdorff

Would you like to elaborate on the reasoning why you expect cEDH to blow up? I myself have thought that it will not be too long that EDH will formally split in two distinct formats\* and WoTC will take over organizing cEDH tours globally. Considering the amount of possible revenue in this, and Hasbro's current economic approach to MtG, I don't see how they can afford to ignore addressing cEDH directly for much longer. For example, if you look at the upcoming MH3, the design of a set formally for Modern is already significantly directed at EDH. I can see that there are people within Hasbro/WoTC asking themselves why not make the most of that by facilitating the growth of competitive play? \* I expect the most significant difference to be distinct ban lists. These kinda de facto already exist, considering the strong norms surrounding card selection in 'casual' EDH. For example, fast mana, land destruction and stax. This can also extend to actual format rules, such as the number of cards needed for wincon infinites and the number of (especially unconditional) tutors in decks.

So, The conversation over having two formats in the EDH community is ongoing but the current consensus is that having different ban lists will ultimately not work. Once you change the rules to create a new format, there will be a large split and both sides will suffer. I played a game a few nights ago with a guy from Portugal and he was organizing a cEDH tournament in Lisbon. WOTC reached out to him about sponsoring the event. This would be their first entry (IIRC) into the cEDH space. They wanted to limit proxies and our discussion was centered around my opinion that the stance was shortsighted and would turn the competition into a pay-to-win environment. We play expensive cards. My personal opinion is that cEDH is an absolutely fantastic format within a great game. The format overall is growing and I am part of that. I’m a new player who found EDH and jumped to cEDH because of the salt and stress of casual pods. I play 5% casual 95% cEDH and will never look back.

Maybe not "blow up" but Magic Con Chicago had an officially supported Duel Commander tournament that got 60ish players where no proxies were enforced and that was probably the first time they've had an official competitive DC event at a magic official event. We shall see what the future holds though I guess.

Cambrian_Creek_Farms

Theres probably more proxies of the ABU stuff then real copies 😅

Squirrel009

Just speaking anecdotally, none of my friends who proxy would ever pay anything close to reserve list prices. $15 is an expensive card they likely wouldn't spring for. I don't think this population of people meaningfully affects prices

LordTetravus

They're extremely common. I know a lot of players who proxy entire decks. Play the player, not their wallet. I don't care what you proxy. To be clear, my definition of proxy includes everything from paper slips printed from a computer to half naked anime alt art girls to Chinese or German counterfeits or fakes. Myself personally, and a number of other high-end players that I know, also acquire fakes to shuffle in lieu of expensive cards. I do not personally shuffle anything more than $200. The real expensive cards live in a binder instead. I write FAKE on the back in Sharpie to ensure everyone understands I'm never trying to mislead or peddle fakes. I own all the real cards I proxy. As a result, my flagship Kenrith deck on the table in practice is closer to 5k value which is significantly safer than carrying a deck that is actually worth more than 14k.

In my decks, 100%. I tend to own about 80% of the cards in my decks. I proxy lands and staples though because I like the variety of having a lot of decks sleeved and I don’t own that many of those cards.

Dude, WoTCs reserve list is stupid and makes proxies almost mandatory for any kind of growth. They don’t care about making valuable reprints affordable. I don’t want people to lose value either; but proxies should just be legal period.

Wrexial_and_Friends

I mean this is probably a lukewarm tale on mtgfinance, but many of the cards I proxy in cEDH are ones that were spiked up by investors: RL cards, Low run cards, or commander staples. It feels so different spending 10-20 on a fetch VS spending that on a \[\[Rapid Fire\]\], you know?

Truthful answer outside of cEDH, and the internet Proxies aren't common. You're on reddit though, and so EVERYWHERE.

Fish6092000

We did not allow proxy cards for Commander until December 2022. After Wizards released the 30th Anniversary set we allowed as many proxy cards as you want.

Revolutionary_View19

So what makes their first proxy reprint of beta so different from their first?

Fish6092000

The price.

Revolutionary_View19

Theres still CE out there if you want to pay less if 30a being more expensive then CE was really the issue.

waaaghbosss

How much is a pack of ce or ie? 3.99?

Marbra89

Most cEDH players are encouraging proxy use. Especially for playing for fun, you should not be surprised to find fully proxy decks. Since they want as many as possible to play with and having fun. So removing a price barrier is more common sense. I feel cEDH is a small part of the EDH community. Sanction play of casual EDH (LGSs EDH night) “should” not allow proxy cards. So I don’t believe it will have a great impact on financial part of MTG. My LGS have a health Legacy community so a lot of the pricy cards are in circulation

Battler111

Just don’t proxies expensive cards, idc about FoF or even duals, but I do for broken cards like bazaar. You want to play Nebuchadnezzar but don’t want to pay 200$, I’m fine. Everyone wants to play a tabernacle but can’t pay 3000$.
