I like season 6-10, solid Jilliam seasons, got some Dr Grace in there, and the mysteries are good! I love the mysteries of seasons 1-5 but not so much the personal storylines š
Agreed that seasons 5-10 were peak Murdoch, especially with Dr. Grace.
1-5 were good
11-14 were good
15-16 were middling with some gems and showing cracks
17 has been the weakest by a lot
Yeah, Dr Grace really brings the life into the show.
She serves as Julia's protege(and sort-of-best-friend), inexperienced-but-enthusiastic Murdoch's coroner, and most importantly love interest for George.
When the cracks start happen at George-Emily relationship, I dislike MM for a while, but I understand why the writers do it.
I love early seasons MM though ... when Murdoch uses/creates a lot of prototype modern technology ... and when Crabtree selfishly put in his lavish theory into the cases, and Murdoch(and Brackenreid) just look at him weirdly.
The early seasons and the later seasons are different, not better or worse. Obviously, the expectations for a TV show changed from 2008. I would say that the early seasons probably had generally more complex crime stories, since we only had 4 main characters and often the entire episode was focused on one case. Nowadays, we have 2 or even 3 cases with simpler solutions, BUT when it comes to character development, the later seasons are much stronger than the early ones. If you think of the early seasons, the 4 main charaters look more like cartoon characters compared to the later seasons, just think of George or Brackenreaid, they really started as one dimensional people in S1 but later, they became really complex, with Brackenreid's family drama storylines or George becoming more mature and learning from his early mistakes, getting more confident, a husband and less of a "goofy George". In the early seasons, a complex, unpredictale character like Violet Hart would not have been possible. Now, the show has become more character focused and less single crime story focused, but that's just how the times have changed from 2008.
Favourite season? Maybe season 11 or 13.
Jonny Harris (George) has another show where he visits small towns here in Canada, that's why we don't see him as often and we got Detective Watts. I love both characters.
Seasons 4-11 were peak MM for me. The mysteries were interesting and the show just looked better. I don't know if it's my screen but everyone has an orange-ish tinge to their skin? Also why are there so many wide shots? I feel like I'm watching a play. What happened to the closeups? The actors feel like they're just phoning it in. The mysteries are utterly forgettable, especially this season. I can't even recall a plotline. Believe me, as a hardcore fan that's been watching since S1, this pains me to write this!
Interesting responses!
Seasons 1-5 were produced by a different production group, so itās obviously closest Ā to the original vision. Ā The technical production standards seemed higher back then (more complex camera setups, thoughtfully-written dialogue, etc.).
I started losing patience with seasons 12-13ā¦ I sought out the S14 Pendrick episode, and was disappointed with the lack of depth and production (talking heads instead of visual storytelling).
I have no idea, except maybe the original investors had fulfilled their initial obligations? Ā Eng. Wikipedia says: āā¦Ā Rogers Media decided not to continue the series beyond its fifth seasonā¦ā

I unapologetically love all of them
