I love this song and others like it. I learned here on Reddit they are called “counterpoint duets.” It keeps me listening over and over again to follow one part then the other, and then back to how they interact with each other.
Edit: typo
Not all emotional but favorite:
- For Good
- As Long As You‘re Mine
- Anything You Can Do
- You‘re The Top

A bit! The show was a province over, so we only had a week to rehearse together, but we definitely made sure we were ready when I got there. A few years ago (we do this sort of show almost every year) someone else and I did All for the Best from Godspell. Now THAT one was hard!
For good was my immediate first thought! & ALAYM has some great harmony. I didn’t appreciate it til years after hearing it the first time (although, I was like 12 the first time lol.)
Great picks!
Such an incredibly sexist premise set to the most gorgeous music. I also love this song (beautiful to listen to, fun to sing!), but hate every thing that both women say.
Hell yeah!
Check out the original recording, usually it's packaged with a black and white Chess board on the cover.
That version was, essentially, the first draft and it didn't make it to stage, but to this day I think it's the best version.

The Thrill of First Love or What Would I Do? from Falsettos
Suddenly Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors

Move On from Sunday in the Park with George
Vamp from Some Like It Hot
Edit: I just realized the post says which songs are the most emotional to you rather than just duets you like… I’d strike Say My Name, The Thrill of First Love, and Vamp from this list in terms of songs that are emotional
It's an underrated show. I remember in a production I did the stage was rigged so that in act two the whole floor would rise on one side and tilt further as the ship sank.
One night during the architects song climax one of the cables snapped so the stage suddenly tilted dramatically as chairs were falling off the set. The guy just grabbed onto the railing up top and finished the song. He wasn't thrilled when he got off but the audience was really impressed with the "special effects!" So realistic with all the creaking and shocked gaps off stage!
I love a good duet!

Lily’s Eyes - The Secret Garden
Agh, I could go on all night. I’m a sucker for a duet with some solid harmonies.
Since I was in Aida back in college, I can’t help picking songs from that show.
Elaborate Lives, Written in the Stars, How I Know You, and I’m still salty about how I didn’t get to perform Like Father, Like Son (I played Zoser, and cutting that song out meant I only got to sing one song).
But if I had to pick only one, It’d be Enchantment Passing Through.

"Confrontation" from J&H
I saw Neil Patrick Harris and Jason Segel do this on an episode of Inside the Actors Studio. Pretty epic
This is an amazing duet! It's a show stopper!
Not all emotional but favorite: - For Good - As Long As You‘re Mine - Anything You Can Do - You‘re The Top - Therapy - One Hand, One Heart - It Only Takes a Taste
TICK TICK BOOM MENTIONED 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥
I just sang Therapy with a friend last weekend for some people (we performed it at a cabaret-style show a few years ago). Such a fun one!
Oh I tried it a few times and it was super fast for me haha, I feel like it requires a lot of practice?
A bit! The show was a province over, so we only had a week to rehearse together, but we definitely made sure we were ready when I got there. A few years ago (we do this sort of show almost every year) someone else and I did All for the Best from Godspell. Now THAT one was hard!
For Good was sung at my high school graduation and it felt so appropriate.
TICK TICK BOOM!!!!!!💥
ONE HAND, ONE HEART!!!
For good was my immediate first thought! & ALAYM has some great harmony. I didn’t appreciate it til years after hearing it the first time (although, I was like 12 the first time lol.) Great picks!
A Little Fall of Rain from Les Mis. There's a lot of fun duets that I love, but this song just hits me every time.
This was my first thought and I’m the same, every time.
This and the confrontation between Valjean and Javert.
I Know Him So Well, from Chess
Such an incredibly sexist premise set to the most gorgeous music. I also love this song (beautiful to listen to, fun to sing!), but hate every thing that both women say.
Yes! Love this song in any incarnation!
Came here to comment just this! Beautifully composed song
This is the only correct answer, with For Good from Wicked a close 2nd
I've never heard this but I'll take any rec from a fellow Zappa fan 8D
Hell yeah! Check out the original recording, usually it's packaged with a black and white Chess board on the cover. That version was, essentially, the first draft and it didn't make it to stage, but to this day I think it's the best version.
“Die Schatten Werden Länger” from *Elisabeth* “Perfect Strangers” from *The Mystery of Edwin Drood* “The Confrontation” from *Les Miserables* “Confrontation” from *Jekyll and Hyde* (debatably a duet) “Dangerous Game” from *Jekyll and Hyde* “The Proposition” from *Frankenstein* “Mortals and Fools” from *Death Note*
I was looking for Confrontation from Jekyll and Hyde! To me it's 100% a duet
I'd count it as a duet since it's sung by two different characters. They're just both played by the same actor.
I came to say “In His Eyes” from Jekyll & Hyde.
Perfect strangers seconded!!!
And third-ed
God that duet from Elisabeth is SO good my god
Omg death note is so gooood
Perfect Strangers yessss
Suddenly Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors
I feel like I would like Suddenly, Seymour a lot more if other people liked it less. It’s just SO prevalent that it gets on my nerves lol
Agony from Into the Woods, Follow Your Heart from Urinetown
Agony is my partner’s favorite song - the reprise is just as good!
I’d argue it’s better! That second riff on the reprise is so dissonant I love it!
In the same vein as Agony - The Song That Goes Like This from Spamalot.
I Still Believe from Miss Saigon kills me.
Yes! So beautiful and so sad.
We Do Not Belong Together from Sunday in the Park with George Unworthy of Your Love from Assassins You Must Meet My Wife from A Little Night Music Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better from Annie Get Your Gun He'll Never Know from A Year With Frog and Toad

What made us so right together Is what made it all wrong.
>We Do Not Belong Together from Sunday in the Park with George So devastating and emotional. It feels like such a true-to-life argument. "You could tell me not to go! Say it to me, tell me not to go..."
"The choice may have been mistaken, the choosing was not" is one of the wisest Sondheim lyrics.
Do You Love Me? from Fiddler on the Roof If I Loved You from Carousel Take Me or Leave Me from Rent Edit to add: hey all those titles together sound like a weird, sad conversation! 🫠

Time Stops from Big Fish The Proposal/The Night was Alive from Titanic the Musical
I love that song from Titanic!
