He did leave Aphrodite for the goddess Aglaia after the Aphrodite/Ares scandal, and judging by the Iliad they have a more stable union than most of the Olympians do
So even the ancient Greeks already understood that above a certain level of toxicity it's better to just leave your family behind and start anew with someone who treats you right?
And Ares and Aphrodite were already seeing each other before she got married. She agreed to the marriage only because she was thinking Ares could win her back in battle. He could not.
I thought the marriage happened because Zeus arranged it, usually as a bribe to free Hera from a punishment Hephaestus had inflicted on her, or his way of “I may’ve been a shitty dad, here’s my lowest level of effort of doing you some good”
Yes but he did ask Aphrodite first and she agreed. according to Libanius, and quoted from Theoi.com
“Zeus sought the assistance of the gods in the freeing his Queen and offered the goddess Aphrodite in marriage to the god who could bring Hephaistos to Olympos. Aphrodite agreed to the arrangment in the belief that her beloved Ares would prevail. Ares stormed the forge of Hephaistos, bearing arms, but was driven back by the Divine Smith with showers of flaming metal”
I love Ares but yeah he screwed that one over.

it´s debetable. I did left a comment saying the why that myth could be some type of moder re-enterpretation from the origin story of Erichthonius of Athens and why that event does not really add up.

Well, this is really leaving me to want to understand why such a bizzare and ramdom moment like this one was done for such a weird origin story like his.
It's a good and fair question, and any decent classicist will tell you there isn't any one answer.
My personal interpretation: considering Erichthonius is a heroic king of Athens, and a very important part of Athens' etiological myth, they probably wanted to give legitimacy to themselves through the myth of his birth. They do this by presenting Erichtonius as a) authochthonic, and therefore connected to the land itself, b) a surrogate child of Athena, their patron, and c) being spawned from Hephaestus who, despite not being a patron of theirs as such, was still an important deity to the city who represented ingenuity and craftsmanship (big Athenian values).
Through the particulars of the myth of Erichthonius' birth, they get all 3 things in a way that would seem plausible to them.
I see why and were they were going for, but...... why incest yet again, and specially degrading and vilanazing Hephaestus in such a way (making him do those actions as an act of deseperation and loneliness after his "divorce" with Aphrodite) it really confuses me more than it disturbs and concerns me.
can we at least be glad and agree that something like that never happened again and he did not tried to make the same mistake or approach her like that again.

Okay saw it. Im really impressed they got the info right about him accurately. Huh they actually stood loyal to the actual myth.
The little Playmobile figurine shall be handed out as a welcome gift to newcomers.
In all honesty yes it was not a good move from Zeus, but in the end it would have being better for her to simply express her disagreement and or just cancel the wedding or you know, not accept the proposal.
That´s what i have said. Its things like these that makes me wonder what was going on in those time periods during the creation of these myths and legends.
We really do, im going to go on the making of different prints that says "Hephaestus deserves better" "Best wholesome god, leave him alone" "Hephaestus 1# fan"

Aw hecks bro, that´s more of a bad retelling of the "Erichthonius of Athens" origin story. Its seriusly weird honestly and its more of a modern take on his origins from between c. 1555 and c. 1560. Its awfully weird and out of place. Not just that but Erichthonius predates far far back from pre-Greek era. Its really weird not gonna lie and puts him in a more antagonistic light (like it happened often with Hades) due to his bad reputation with how Greeks treated handicap and disabeled people back then.

Welcome in to the fan club. Not very fond of Percy Jackson but our doors are always open to those who want to learn more in depth about the greek gods.

He's one of the few normal gods, except that he kinda forced Aphrodite to marry him which was not nice at all. He wasn't the main forcer, but still.
Yea i feel ya. I think after Zeus announced that she was going to become his bride, he got hyped up that something nice finally was going to happen to him, plus Zeus sorta arranged the marrige between them so none of the other male gods caused a fight over her hand. Obiusly that would never stop Aphrodites promiscuity and sleeping around habits. The pour fella being the naive god that he is belived that since she was going to become his bride she would be his and stay loyal. Pour Hephy.
\*crying\* I DONT KNOW!
Worst is how much he and Ares have in common many thing alike if you think about it.
Wait can we have this as a discussion over at the offcial sub? r/Hephaestusfanclub
Didn't Hephaestus humiliate Ares and Aphrodite by trapping them and dragging them before Olympus after he caught them? Didn't he also trap Hera on one occasion? As the guy who made the arms and armor for the other gods, and who was capable of trapping the God of War or the Queen of the Gods, I feel like there had to have been some healthy respect there.
I also recall something like only 3 beings having the ability to throw lightning bolts: Zeus, obviously. Hephaestus, because he created them. And I want to say the third was Zagreus for some reason.
Its a reminder that the gods can be exactly as irrational and petty as humans can be when under a really bad situation or become desperate when something humiliating or degrading happens to us, we tend to still rub salt on the wound and be really petty about it. In the End he ended up letting his mother go after being convinced and persuaded by Ares and Hermes to rethink of what he was doing and forgive Hera (since in the end he is one of the softest and more vulnerable gods by heart, the pour guy gets easily mistreated and used by others often in variouse myths or is looked as some form of antagonists after being push over the edge by all of the mistreatment and pushing around he gets by the other gods and his family). In the end Hepaesthus is a god with a very big and kind heart and shows remorse and regret for his actions and mistakes and does later on tries to make up for his bad behavior if you follow up the events of the myths.
Aaayyyyy we got another one hurray!
Write your name here, your reasons for him being your favorite god and here is your t-shirt and playmobile figurine, as well for a book of his myths and mentions.

Uuuuhhhhhhh great aunt actually, people do tend to forget the important detail that she after being concived by the semem foam of the ocean from Uranos´s dick after falling on the ocean, she is a direct offspring from Uranus and her son Eros is his grandson, and Aunt of Zeus and the rest of his siblings.
Sssssooooooooooo the marrige was still really bad from the start. Considering that she is 100 years older than all of them is quite a lot to look at. Even more because Ares becomes the stepfather of Eros and well Phobos, Deimos and Harmonia becomes his step siblings eeeeeeeee oh yea and the fact that Aphrodite was alredy born as a grown adult goddess while also pregnant with Eros still on her womb just makes everything even more better.
Are you forgeting the date were that version predates too. Reminder that modern retellings or recent interpretations do tend to try and erase original tellings and how things were really told back then.
Besides it doesnt make sense from what mother did she came from even for her to be considered Zeus´s direct offspring, its a plot hole of itself trying to erase the fact of her origins. Not to mention that she is still ten times older than the two of them in the end. So in no way any of this is good.
wait wait wait but how do you explain that? Why? How is it possible for her to born from the semen of the chopped off dick of Uranos after it fell on the Ocean of Earth and then be considered the daugther of Zeus? But how and in what way???
Homer and Eurypides wrote she was daughter of Zeus and Dione. Hesiod wrote the more known story. Plato said there were two Aphrodites, so both were correct.
I mean from what i have reaserched, the multiple Aphrodites is due to the different regions where she was worshipped, and the rettellings of her are due to regional difference from what i could understand.
Besides if she was the daughter of Uranos, her siblings include the Titans, such as Cronus, Rhea, Hyperion, and others. If she was the daughter of Zeus, her brothers and sisters include Ares, Hephaestus, Apollo, Artemis, and other Olympian gods and goddesses. How does that really make senses in a cronological order and specially in a consistent storyline?
Well i wonder the same thing.
Its really complicated to track down certain stories, origins and cult followings of old deities, specially if they have a long history and presence that pre dates longer than we think. Similar thing has happened to Dionysus.
Aphrodite has multiple interpretations and aspects through Greece and even parts outside of Italy, Rome and Sparta. Considerinh how the Greeks had the bad tendemcy to claim and adopt other cultures and mythological fugures as their own whennever they would travel to conquest other lands and would stumble apon other parts of a different culture that wasnt theirs, they would try to copy that and alter it to their own liking.
Aphrodite´s most consistent origin story follows that one of Hesiod, even that one cant deny the fact that its right there that she is directly an offspring from Uranos.
I'm sorry for that. Public servers are really creepy. I have a server for friends that until recently i just invited personally people to join. Now i announced it again in disboard. I'm really afraid of what will happen...
He did leave Aphrodite for the goddess Aglaia after the Aphrodite/Ares scandal, and judging by the Iliad they have a more stable union than most of the Olympians do
I know and that´s one of the rare ocassions where he is actually happy. The pour guy gets trashed on so much it´s awful.
That´s one of my favorite myths ever actually, because he did got to find someone who did loved him back and stayed alive yay.
So even the ancient Greeks already understood that above a certain level of toxicity it's better to just leave your family behind and start anew with someone who treats you right?
pretty much, although the Romans had a more direct definition of divorce and same thing applied to the roman gods as well.
And Ares and Aphrodite were already seeing each other before she got married. She agreed to the marriage only because she was thinking Ares could win her back in battle. He could not.
I thought the marriage happened because Zeus arranged it, usually as a bribe to free Hera from a punishment Hephaestus had inflicted on her, or his way of “I may’ve been a shitty dad, here’s my lowest level of effort of doing you some good”

no but seriously this fanclub is not allowing other gods to get slandered, that would not be fair at all.
How did the Romans treat Hephaestus/Vulcan? They really upgraded Ares/Mars and made him less pathetic. They better have treated our forge god nicely

The athena fans coming in to bully our beloved god huh?
Well he did try to rape her.
it´s debetable. I did left a comment saying the why that myth could be some type of moder re-enterpretation from the origin story of Erichthonius of Athens and why that event does not really add up.
Take from a classicist; no, it's not really debatable. He definitely tried to rape Athena.
I mean i have read two other tellings of the origins for Erikhthonios, i would like to have some confirmation on what were the specific details of the stories to understand better this situation.
If you have access to it (neither are free), the Oxford Classical Dictionary is a good starting point, that or Brill's New Pauly.
well thanks for the response i will be giving a look
Because what is wrong by modern standards may not have been by Athenian or Greek standards at the time.
Incest wasn't really incest for the gods. That's why they're the gods; what's okay for them is not okay for us.
well damm i dont know what else i expected but now im just left once again concerned.
can we at least be glad and agree that something like that never happened again and he did not tried to make the same mistake or approach her like that again.

In the end Hepaesthus is a god with a very big and kind heart and shows remorse and regret for his actions and mistakes and does later on tries to make up for his bad behavior if you follow up the events of the myths.
Wait, Hep create lightning? I thought it was the hundred hands giant? Alongside with Hades helm and Poseidon trident

> His wife cheated on him with his brother Don't forget that in most versions that wife is their mutual sibling.
The aunt thing is one version, the muuuuuch more common version is her being another child of Zeus.
Homer wrote she was daughter of Zeus and Dione. Nothing predates this story.
wait wait wait but how do you explain that?
I don't understand.
okay what exactly do you not understand
Why isn't it consistent?
Is this why he tried to rape Athena?
Well he did try to rape Athena, so... Maybe he shouldn't be seen as to great...
who is your favorite god? from greek or any mythology.
