2 things:
1) A nickname can be anything.
2) A lot of people where I grew up, use their middle name. Do you have a middle name that's easier to work with, for you?
My uncle Slick was named Hoyt so I suspect that is really his name. His full name was William Hoyt Last Name and he died well into his 90s. But everyone called him Slick because this is the South.
I knew a guy whose last name was Hoyt. Maybe it was a family name for your Slick, too - people often give their kids the mother's or grandmother's last name as a middle name.
Does it have to be a diminutive? Hort and Horty are fine, but if you tell your friends you are open to an alternative maybe they will come up with something else. Like Morton, Chuck, Kunu… or whatever!
My name isn’t very nickname-able and I needed one too. Be open to what you vibe with instead of something related…maybe it’s both. Personally, I was surprised by how much it meant to me to keep my initials the same.
Tony (which has already been suggested) is the best I can think of. Some other alternatives that are further away from Horton: Tory, Troy, Ron/Ronny, Art/Arty
I actually think Horty is a really cool nickname. Also you can do this bit:
Them:"Horty? What an interesting name. "
You: " It's a family name. It's short for horticulture. "
A nickname doesn’t have to be from your first name. Maybe your middle name has a good nickname or your surname most people call me a nickname based on my surname. Also nicknames don’t have to be short for names they can be based on personality or physical features. An example of this is my uncle Bush - he’s called Bush because he has bushy hair…everyone calls him that he introduces himself as Bush. A personality nickname could be -Happy or Sunny or like my own childhood nickname Flutterby.- I have ADHD and my parents said I was like a butterfly who fluttered by to the next thing.
Yep, my aunt is called Gracie but her real name is totally different. She is called that because she used to be scared of a tiny but mean old lady called Gracie who lived on the same street. Apparently everyone joked that she would grow up and become like Gracie so that became her name. I always thought it was her middle name.
I have an aunt who goes by Margo but her name is Charlotte. Apparently, it was in the days when men didn't attend births and she was the 5th child. My grandmother wanted to name a kid after her husband (Charles) and did so against his wishes. She brought home baby Charlotte and he basically said "Nope, I'm calling her Margo" and everyone's called her Margo ever since. Nicknames definitely don't need to be connected to anything at all.
I have a great aunt Pete who I recently found out was named Clarissa??? I thought her name was like Petunia or something but Clarissa?? No clue where it came from either lmao
My oldest daughter is Grace. As an infant she was Gracie then the movie Miss Congeniality came out and she was dubbed Gracie Lou Freebush that shortened into Gracie Lou, then Lucinda, Louie, lunesta etc…. I lovingly call her Lou
Both my parents went by nicknames based on their middle names when they started dating. My mom's middle name was Kathryn (Katy) and my dad's is Russell (Rusty). It wasn't until they moved in together and started seeing each other's mail with their real first names on it that they realized how goofy it was.
H. I know several people how just go by their first initial. Or if you like your last name, go by that. My grandfather did his whole life. I didn't even realize his first name was Wilbur until 10 years after he passed away.
Just pick a cool name that has nothing to do with your name. Go by “Cheeto” or something… there is a kid in my friends Apartment that my kid plays with named “Butter John” his real name is like Michael.
But if you have to pick one based on your name go with “Hortonator” or “Tron”
Use your Initials?
I kinda like Hootie (blowfish be damned) and Rory of the suggested names
Maybe Last name (e.g I know a few people last name MacDonald go by Mac)
A blend between your first and middle names or first and last names (like how Jennifer Lopez goes by J.Lo)
Or if you really really hate your name - you could consider changing it. My family member had a name that didn’t suit her (think of a lady named Peter) and she just goes by her middle name officially now. Horton is a name that just doesn’t suit everyone, but if it was an honor name, you can make it your middle name and pick your own cool first name!
My boyfriends name is Horton! He said he had a really hard time with it growing up. His parents wouldn’t let him go by his middle name. Now he beats everyone to the punch line when he introduces himself, and says “like Horton hears a who”. I call him Horty but I’ve grown to like Horton a lot 😊. My baby’s middle name will most likely be Horton
This might just be my weird way of thinking, I'll explain in a moment, but how about Oli?
When I think Horton, I think of one movie with the elephant. The elephant association can lead to the nickname Ellie/El/etc., but those are more feminine. Elephant in Dutch is olifant, which is where I got Oli, which can be masc/neutral
That's at least how I go about working out names for characters/animals/teddies/etc, haha
Just the initial H.
Orry is also a traditional nickname for Horton.
If you’ve ever seen/read North and South (mini series and book about the civil war Orry Maine is one of the lead characters.
Where I live we might call you Hoz or Hozza. Like we would call a man called Harry Haz or Hazza, a man called Jeremy Jez or Jezza, Darren Daz or Dazza, etc.
edit: H or Holt might work too.
**Orts! *Ortz?***
And a vote for these that others have suggested: **Hoyt, Rory, Tim, H.,** or something that utilizes your middle and/or last initials or names
If you were Australian it would be something obscure like Wayne.
Let me explain: Your name would be related back to the Dr Seuss book Horton hears a who. Which would then be related to another Dr Seuss book The Cat in the Hat. Related to Mike Meyers who played the cat in the movie. And finally related back to another Mike Meyers character Wayne from Wayne’s World.
And there you have it, your nickname is Wayne, now and forever. And every Aussie would understand why.
Excuses for the spelling of the names. Sorry.
Have a great day Wayne.
H.
I know several people how just go by their first initial. Or if you like your last name, go by that. My grandfather did his whole life. I didn't even realize his first name was Wilbur until 10 years after he passed away.
you could go by Reverend, or Rev - https://www.bing.com/search?pglt=513&q=reverend+horton+heat&cvid=7d0edbac73414df28c47f64aa4cccdf1&aqs=edge.1.69i57j0l8j69i11004.3387j0j1&FORM=ANNAB1&PC=LCTS
I like Otie (oh-tee) ! Its close to the familiar "Odie", it sounds like a name, and Horton is Olde English, so you could also even go with Odie from that.
I’m just going to ramble off some:
“H”, “Orty” / “Arty” (RT is in your name), “Shorty”, “Seuss” (since I’m sure people associate that with you commonly as-is)
Tony?
Maybe if I was jacked that would work
Plenty of fat Tonys, ask fat tony
[удалено]
Don't worry, I got your back! Gonna start introducing myself as Phat Tony from now on to muddy the waters.
Username is wildly appropriate here
I snorted reading this 😂😂
Snorton
Bro, Tony doesn't have to be jacked!
Solution: go get jacked
Huh? Lol tony is a great name!
My step-brother is a Tony and nowhere near "jacked". He's actually a druggie pisshead. Names can fit anyone.
Kid who lives down the street is named Tony and he’s eight.
I have a nephew named Tony who is 11. (The other Tony's son)
I know a Tony who is about 5’4” and thin with glasses. But he is warm and funny, and he carries the name well!
>I know a Tony who is about 5’4” and thin with glasses. I know that Tony too!
I’m Italian and we have Tony’s of all shapes and sizes. And a Toni.
Plenty of fat Tonys, as fat tony
I knew a Tony who was a really charming, silly music theory nerd. Big Weird Al Yankovic vibes.
Where do you live that Tony isn't a super common name? I've known like at least 4 Tony's who are all very different looking.
Who says you have to be Jacked?
Rory?
I actually like this
What about Ron? What’s your middle name is that cool? How about an unrelated nickname like Chunkster or Skippy?
Not sure where chunkster came from but I dig it and my middle name is Chad
If you were my friend, I would call you Horchada (like the drink, horchata). Unnecessary disclaimer: I'm not cool.
HORCHADA. This is the most important thing I have read on Reddit today and likely the most correct answer, Horton. Hello our new friend, HORCHADA.
Omg Horchada is actually a perfect combo Also, I love a good horchata.
>*I'm not cool* This is reddit.
Came here to say Horchada!!! Yes!!!!!
Ooooo! How about you combo the two? Ho-cha!
Horchata!
I LOVE this haha
This made me laugh out loud
This is the superior option
I love the name Rory.
Dang it that’s so cute. My list is comparatively hilarious idk how I didn’t get to Rory.
Timbits
A for effort
Timmy.
A kid in a class I subbed for was named Timbit
Nah that's what he'll call his kids
Damn Reddit for getting rid of free awards lol
Hoit
Ok this is the best so far
I love Hoyt! I also saw the Rory comment but I think Hoyt is better. Rory is good too though!
Yeah. Hoyt is way better than Hoit
Yes! Spell it Hoyt.
Noo, it sounds like hoity toity
It’s sounds like you’re about to vomit. So does Horton come to think of it… sorry dude
All I can think of is is Tim Horton's or Horton Hears a Who. His parents did him dirty, damn
They really did I’m gonna go take it up with them
They should have at least given you a good nickname
I’m gonna go cry now
This comment is so true it’s all I can hear now I’m dying laughing “come to think of it…” took me out as well like he doesn’t already hate it😭😂
I first read this one as "Holt", which I think is cool
2 things: 1) A nickname can be anything. 2) A lot of people where I grew up, use their middle name. Do you have a middle name that's easier to work with, for you?
My middle name is Chad I have no idea what to make of this
My dad has a friend named Hoyt, now I wonder if it’s his real name or a nickname.
I think there's a Hoyt in True Blood
Unfun fact, "hoit" means rotting carcass in Romanian. 😭
STEVE HOLT!
STEVE HOIT!
I like it like true blood!
What about your going by your middle name or making a nickname out of your last name?
This is the answer. Why try so hard to make something you don’t like work?
Yep. You only live once. Don’t use a name you hate.
Does it have to be a diminutive? Hort and Horty are fine, but if you tell your friends you are open to an alternative maybe they will come up with something else. Like Morton, Chuck, Kunu… or whatever!
Really good point I would like diminutives but something else might need to do
[удалено]
I knew a guy who went by "Rooster" and it was fitting because christ that guy was a dick
Wait as in the guy’s name was NN catfish?
Probably his nickname was catfish
My name isn’t very nickname-able and I needed one too. Be open to what you vibe with instead of something related…maybe it’s both. Personally, I was surprised by how much it meant to me to keep my initials the same.
Hortimer
I thought initially Hortaniel but I like this better.
Horticious
Horticulture
Kunu! Paul Rudd in forgetting Sarah Marshall !
Tony (which has already been suggested) is the best I can think of. Some other alternatives that are further away from Horton: Tory, Troy, Ron/Ronny, Art/Arty
Noooo not Tory lmao
Rip
Bit of a stretch but maybe Hop?
I like the effort
I knew someone named Hop. Super chill guy, never knew what his full name was though.
Horton > Oron, Ron, Otto
Otto!
I love the name Otto! It seems to be having a (albeit small) renaissance lately!
Oron is just "moron" without the "m" 😂😂
I know an Ori and I love that name.
I actually think Horty is a really cool nickname. Also you can do this bit: Them:"Horty? What an interesting name. " You: " It's a family name. It's short for horticulture. "

This is how nicknames work in my family too.. it’s how my childhood dog Holly became Aucky (Holly -> Haleakala (volcano in Maui) -> Akala -> Aucky)
My childhood cat was named Rini from sailor moon, then it was rini beany, then beany, beans, and finally beaner.
I loved Gracie Lou in that movie. It's funny how nicknames just morph.
Both my parents went by nicknames based on their middle names when they started dating. My mom's middle name was Kathryn (Katy) and my dad's is Russell (Rusty). It wasn't until they moved in together and started seeing each other's mail with their real first names on it that they realized how goofy it was.
Who
I really think he should go by this haha I can't help but say "Hears a Who" in my head every time I've read "Horton" on this page
Good. I’m not the only one.
Who> Dr. Suess> Doc
I love that
Harry
Ortie
H. I know several people how just go by their first initial. Or if you like your last name, go by that. My grandfather did his whole life. I didn't even realize his first name was Wilbur until 10 years after he passed away.
there's a british rapper that goes by "aitch" I always thought it was a clever/cool nickname
Just pick a cool name that has nothing to do with your name. Go by “Cheeto” or something… there is a kid in my friends Apartment that my kid plays with named “Butter John” his real name is like Michael. But if you have to pick one based on your name go with “Hortonator” or “Tron”
I want to know this Butter John. That name is hilarious!
Hon! Like Han Solo :) Edit: Honnie if you like diminutives!
Your Honor?!!!
Hor?
But pronounced the way Frank from Always Sunny says it: Hoor.
The only answer
Orty? Drop the H! Tony works. Tonto? Might turn some heads.
I actually know someone that goes by Ort/Orty lol it works
Like the (o)ort cloud!
Tonto is silly/stupid/dumb in Spanish
Ton ton
I was going to say this one haha
Have one relative named Horatio, and is called Ton Ton. So this works
“H”
Use your Initials? I kinda like Hootie (blowfish be damned) and Rory of the suggested names Maybe Last name (e.g I know a few people last name MacDonald go by Mac) A blend between your first and middle names or first and last names (like how Jennifer Lopez goes by J.Lo) Or if you really really hate your name - you could consider changing it. Horton is a name that just doesn’t suit everyone, but if it was an honor name, you can make it your middle name and pick your own cool first name!
Hotie/Hoty (pronounced hoe-tee) Or Hootie if you feel like being whimsical, but people might constantly ask you where your blowfish are lol
Go Hotie... Isha birthday...
laughed too hard
Orc
I’m digging it
Ron?
Horny
This is the way
Rev. Like the Reverend Horton Heat. Your name is so damn cool, bro. Not even kidding.
This all day!
I was scrolling to make sure at least one person suggested it. It's perfect!
Came here to say Rev so, seconded.
Tim
HOOT
My boyfriends name is Horton! He said he had a really hard time with it growing up. His parents wouldn’t let him go by his middle name. Now he beats everyone to the punch line when he introduces himself, and says “like Horton hears a who”. I call him Horty but I’ve grown to like Horton a lot 😊. I forgot to add, we also call my bf who’s name is Horton “Hortisserie chicken”. You’re welcome
Hank? Horn? Chop? Ore? Torque
Almost not quite
This might just be my weird way of thinking, I'll explain in a moment, but how about Oli? When I think Horton, I think of one movie with the elephant. I like Oli!
How about "Not" as in "Not Horton"
Most based answer on here
i am so sorry
What’s your middle name
Hears a Who
I was hoping someone would suggest "Who", but close enough 🤣
I think Harry or Hank are fine. But my husband calls my son Bubba. So a nickname could be anything.
Ron or Rory could definitely work, also obviously Tony. Maybe Holt or Hoyt?
Why don't you just change your name?
Just the initial H. Orry is also a traditional nickname for Horton. If you’ve ever seen/read North and South (mini series and book about the civil war Orry Maine is one of the lead characters.
Horty😵💫
What’s your middle name? Can you go by that?
My friend’s son’s nickname is Ori- that could work for Horton.
Hart, Hoot, Torn, Orr, Ort, Tin. Nicknames don't have to be related to your real name. Buzz Aldrin's real name was Edwin.
Where I live we might call you Hoz or Hozza. Like we would call a man called Harry Haz or Hazza, a man called Jeremy Jez or Jezza, Darren Daz or Dazza, etc. edit: H or Holt might work too.
Tone? Toby?
Horty the horticulturalist
Orry
H.T. People have already suggested Tony. That was my other go to.
My husband’s nickname is just his nationality. 😂
Hoo-boy
What about just "H"?
I like how Megan markle calls Harry “h”
Maybe Art or Artie based on the R T in the middle of Horton?
Tory
Ton
H?
**Orts! *Ortz?*** And a vote for these that others have suggested: **Hoyt, Rory, Tim, H.,** or something that utilizes your middle and/or last initials or names

What’s your middle name?
Otto?
Hoyt is great! Ort is also cool.
ORT

Hooch like Ho from Horton and Ch from Chad
Horchata is the first thing that came to mind with your first and middle.
My brain heard Horton Chad and immediately went Horchata. Do with that what you will.
Tonner!
Tonne, Orto
