Not true, the 9-2X itself was based on a GG Impreza which is a second gen Impreza hatchback - the Aero model is essentially the equivalent of a GG WRX.
*Technically* it's the first gen WRX in the US, but it's misleading to word it that way because obviously not everyone is from the US and them not being sold in the US doesn't mean they didn't exist.
Additionally, I'm sure you realize this and you've just worded it weirdly, but the 9-2X is a Subaru, not the other way around.
