Hands On Nashville allows you to search for volunteer opportunities based on your interests. I don't volunteer as much as I used to, but I still occasionally do transport stuff for Pittie in Pink, Snooty Giggles Dog Rescue, and Robyn's Nest.
I’ve volunteered with the Cumberland River Compact and Responsible Stewardship several times and have met a lot of great people there. It can be hard work, but it’s rewarding cleaning up the environment.
We've had fun at GONG events. Low key and mostly lighter board games. They do take place at bars so you might be able to talk one or two of your friends into going with you.
We aren't into drinking but we do love arcade bars. No quarter, Game Terminal, etc. There are several around town that you might be able to get your friends to go with you to. They can drink and you can just dominate them on the games because you still have hand eye coordination.
We also love nature walks at places like Shelby Bottoms, Warner Parks, Radnor Lake, etc.
I haven’t! I’ve been interested in the past, but I’m plus sized, and I tend to be hesitant to jump into group physical activities without some knowledge of the group’s acceptance levels.
Any advice on places to check out or how friendly jiu-jitsu is to larger newbies?
Nashville has a pretty good group of schools around. Arista BJJ, Zanshin Dojo, Triangle(Franklin), Profectus(Brentwood) are some ones that I would check out. The cool thing is that most schools offer trial courses for free so you could get the vibe of a place before you committed if you were interested. I would even suggest taking trials from a few schools even if you liked the first one. I can't speak for all of course, but a good school will be welcoming regardless of where you are with your weight.
Camping is always fun. Tons of great spots within a 1-2 hour drive. Kayaking when it gets a little warmer out. Gun ranges if you're into that sort of thing.
The greenways and parks are awesome and there are lots of them. There are normally activities at the nature centers around town. Yoga, stargazing, nature hikes.
I used to just get on Google maps and turn on the bicycling layer - and I’d find all sorts of stuff. Walk, skate, bike, e-bike, mountain bike, all sorts of little pockets around.
Lock one park is my favorite ‘weird’ park, Crockett Park has the highest number of interconnected trails, uphill of ascend amphitheater before Korean vets has my favorite night view of the city, and two rivers park has some really cool albeit hilly trail the mile either side of the skate park.
So sad to hear that's how Nashville is seen--a drinking town with a music problem. Def was not that way 20 years ago, before downtown was turned over to tourists.
My therapist gave me that line actually! I moved here eleven years ago, and at the time, even the bars were just friendly dives with old men who wanted to share their stories about hanging out with Porter Wagoner backstage at the Ryman. But then those dive bars got bought out… and the beer turned to drugs…
I agree this isn’t the Nashville I fell in love with, and sadly, I’m making plans to move in the next year and a half because of it. Greed can make a great thing crumble. Hopeful I can find some new goodness to fill that space!
I disagree. There's always been a lot of partying, but I worked & played downtown in the 1980s & 90s, so can confirm it wasn't the drunk fest it is now.
Volunteer. Almost all my local friends I've met through volunteering.
Thank you! Love this! Can I ask who you volunteer with?

I'll piggyback off what he said. Why not learn to play D&D? There are all sorts of game stores in the area, and new players are always welcome.
Great question! Hopefully someone here has some good suggestions because I’m in the same boat
Maybe we’ll take up these suggestions and run into each other in the wild! Good luck out there!

Thanks for sharing that. Me and my girlfriend have been saying Nashville needs something like this.
Awesome idea - thanks for sharing!!
Pick up an active hobby like hiking, disc golf, golf, tennis, or something.
There is always the movies… I like nature walks too.
Have you ever thought about taking up Jiu-jitsu? Will make friends in no time.

Gun range recommendations? My general preference is outdoor, and bonus points if there's long-range rifle shooting.
Cheatham WMA firing range. I believe it's a $10 day pass.

Backcountry camping
Meetup.
Mountain biking, nashville has many great local trails
I hit the trails. Mountain biking or hiking
We’ve got lots of golf courses, you can meet some nice people there
Try Nashville Sports Leagues. Lots of activities and there’s team sign ups that put a bunch of random people together
