NoMasTacos

This is like a thread of why is my electric bill so high.

Nerazzurri9

People worry too much, personally I would rather spend the extra $100/month to have the AC at 69 instead of 73. Tennessee born and raised, there’s nothing like coming in from 90+ to some sub-70s AC

NoMasTacos

I could not care one way or another, we always just get posts the month after it's hot or cold with people thinking NES is fucking them. Nah, it's your 69 in the summer and 75 in the winter with emergency heat that is fucking you.

sleepylilblackcat

then they also wonder why the power goes out during hot spells. girl maybe it’s all of you overpowering the grid trying to get your home to be 60 when it’s 100+….

FancyFrenchLady

Yes! Usually a AC unit only cools 20 degrees lower than the temp outside.

Scowlface

Since this seems to happen every year, maybe they should upgrade the grid with some of that money we give them every month.

Sharp-Hippo-666

It’s almost like scientists have predicted the very circumstances we’re in for, idk, 70 years? Our cities have had ample opportunity to upgrade their grids. Hell the fact the Fed isn’t forcing it is downright crazy to me

sleepylilblackcat

the nes is a public service. it’s not exactly operating at a profit. the board serves without pay. the cost of electric here is considerably affordable compared to many cities where electric is privately run. i consider myself fortunate that we have access to one of the largest publicly operating electric services in the us. while i agree that the grid could use updates, people also need to understand basic concepts like the tragedy of the commons. humans lived without central cooling for the majority of civilization. i think we can survive setting our units at more manageable temps.

WFU_Showtime

This is a great point, we pay $0.12 per kWh. Many parts of the country pay double that or more.

Scowlface

Profit has nothing to do with investment in its own infrastructure. Profit is what’s left over afterward. Maybe raise prices a bit and do some upgrades, it’s not a hard equation. Also, that’s such a tired take. We also survived most of human history without antibiotics and antiseptics, doesn’t mean that I want to go without next time I’m hurt or sick. “People need to understand basic concepts” - sounds like you need to get off that high horse, my dude.

sleepylilblackcat

they raise the prices that people are already saying are too expensive to upgrade the grid so that people can continue to keep their homes at temps 30 below the feels like outside. then, because of the overuse, the outside temps continue to rise past 110 everyday, and people are still attempting to keep their homes in the 60s. the power system will still break down, and we will be in an endless loop of this cycle. it is not a high horse to want to have a semblance of a naturally symbiotic ecosystem in the future.

BlondieBabe436

Windows open, tits out

nomoredietyo

What’s your thermostat setting in the Winter?

BlondieBabe436

Same

nomoredietyo

Seems a bit nippy in the winter time.

pneumaticartifice

70-72

kattalack

70 during the day, 68 at night. Anything above that is too hot for me and I’m not going to be miserable in my own home. I’d go without something if I had to in order to pay NES.

zepius

73 during the day, 68 over night.

miss_always

oliveslove

Ours exactly

HootieWoo

Same

Tomaketu

Everyone on this thread is unhinged.

mollymcdeath

Spouse and I are both multigenerational Nashville native, always lived in old-ass 90+ year old houses, 75° is usually fine in the summer for both of us. But for some reason it’s absolutely slaughtering me this year. We have a lot of west and southwest facing windows that bring a ton of sunshine in, but, like that’s not new for us. Idk, maybe I’m just really getting old or something (45yo). Either way, NES now owns every single penny I can make, I expect them to show up demanding our first-born any day now, and I’m still boiling.

Tanker70

68. I’m realizing I couldn’t live with 75% of you

BelowAverage355

That works if you live in an apartment, but in a house/over 1500 sq ft or so your power bill would be 5-6 hundred dollars.

prophet001

That's highly dependent on how well-insulated the structure is, and how efficient the equipment is. Spray foam, Low-E windows, and properly-installed and -serviced 14 SEER equipment (with a mister on the condenser) will get you $200 NES bills on 2500 sqft in August, with the thermostat set at 72 during the day and 67 at night.

BlueVeins

I’m not complaining but we have two units we run at 68 degrees for 3,900 square feet and the bill rarely breaks $200

Relative_Form_641

Mine is set at 68 year round power bull is never over 220 1400sq ft house.

Nerazzurri9

But if you set it to 73 the power bill is 400-500… it’s worth the extra hundred a month to not sweat in your house when you come in from cuttin grass

jonneygee

This is not the slightest bit true. We keep our house at 74° when we’re home and 72° at night, and our bill for a just-over-2000 sq ft home rarely goes over $200. We could certainly go down to 73° and get nowhere near that amount.

trippedwire

75 both floors during the day, 70 for the upstairs at night.

kerutland

75 all the time

quemaspuess

This is what I do for both floors. It’s comfortable and my bill is as well. We keep it at 65 in the winter.

Initializee

Same here

TheMidnightTurnip

76-77. I like it warm.

Pianomastermind88

74 day, 72 when sleeping

Frosty_Tale9560

Exactly me. I don’t want my house cold, I want it comfortable. I do turn the fan to on during the day though so that the air is constantly circulating. I have an upstairs that can get warm if I don’t.

TheHarb81

71 during the day, 65 at night

S_Z

Need a roommate? Mine’s cold blooded.

TheHarb81

I think my wife and daughter might object 😂

lilly110707

70-74 when I'm home. 75-76 when I'm not. 78 if neither I nor my dogs are there.

winniecooper73

77 during the day, 75 at night both floors

UsedandAbused87

80 during the day 75 overnight and we get home

FunnyGuy2481

Username checks out.

SkingradGlarthir

78, but I put it on 69 when the girlfriend is over

This-Sky8949

68-70 during the day and 65 at night.. I ain't going to sweat in my own house

uknowsidrum

This. We usually do 71ish during the day. Our old apartment doesn’t do well with heat and the upstairs.

0le_Hickory

68

southern_liberal615

How are y’all not freezing up your HVACs by setting them to 68°-70° when it’s 100° outside??? I have tenants freeze up their units every single summer

doobersthetitan

Good unit Good windows Good insulation

FunnyGuy2481

You should get those checked. I lived in San Antonio for years and it can be over 100 for almost the entire summer. Never had any issues at any of my places keeping it under 70.

zgirl88

When I'm awake: 75 down & up When I'm asleep: 77 down, 73 up (bedrooms) When I'm not home: 77 down & up Alexa controls it all via routines.

tech_priest_gabriel

I'm originally from Miami, so 80 during day, 75 for night.

gothirty2

From Texas and same. Below 80 calls for a jacket for me.

revrenlove

The EPA says to set it at 78. I'm fairly certain they aren't accounting for how that shit works in multi-level buildings. If it's under 74 (with also factoring in humidity) I rock fans and have the windows open. Otherwise, between 76-78 ETA: There's also the 20° rule... https://frederickair.com/home-comfort/reduce-the-stress-on-your-ac-with-the-20-degree-rule/#:~:text=What's%20the%2020%2DDegree%20Rule,no%20less%20than%2075%20degrees.

mukduk1994

Good God

revrenlove

?

mukduk1994

78 is hot mate

revrenlove

I don't disagree - but the power bill get's super hot ![gif](giphy|NkBuOCNdwqP5K|downsized)

CleverDuck

Wear less clothes in your house?

the-real-slim-katy

The EPA can go suck an egg. I’d boil at that temp

CaffinatedManatee

78 for the central air. Then we have a window unit in our bedroom that we set to 66 at night. The combo saves us about $90 per (warm) month over central air alone. We estimate our window unit has saved us $1500 over the past three years

Nerazzurri9

I would rather pay the extra $500/yr for the rest of my house to be 70 degrees April - September

GymAndGarden

Damn. My power is $120 a month on 1800 square feet running AC at 68 max 24/7 non-stop. Never been higher than this price. I even run it when I’m traveling. Wine fridge is also always running and lights are set to 24 hours on inside with outdoor lights in overnight automatically.

CaffinatedManatee

Good for you. We pay $100 in the WINTER

88Dubs

Constant 75-77, but I also have a tower fan pointed at my bed, a ceiling fan in my living room, and a badass little high-powered tabletop fan at my desk. Plus, bottom floor, so.... definitely leeching the neighbor's cool

bmraovdeys

71 all day basically

reasonablychill

That's my number too. As soon as we get our first warm day of the year, the AC is turned on and set to 71, and that's where it stays until it's time to turn the heat back on in autumn.

ReverseLazarus

72-74.

CleverDuck

85°F when I leave the house to be at work all day. Mid 70s when I'm home. Low 70s when I'm sleeping. Y'all need fans and less clothing, or less bio-insulation??

mpelleg459

For real. If I got accustomed to 68-70 in my house, I’d hate being outdoors in the summer so much more.

WhiskeyFF

72 day/66 night. New build w high energy efficient windows and insulation. I sleep really hot

n-dubz

78 during the day.. definitely when we aren’t home. We usually cave and drop it to 76 if we are home. At night, we keep it around 73-74.

the-real-slim-katy

72 during the day, 67-68 at night, and I have a fan blowing on me at ALL times. I make up for the higher electric bill by never turning my heat on in the winter. (Unless it gets like, *too* cold.) if I get even a little bit hot I’m unable to function, so.

jadom25

If you set it below like 75 does your ac ever even turn off all summer?

ThewindGray

Yeah, off more than on. I don't even have great insulation. Keep it at 72/73 during the day, 70 at night.

sophisticatedentropy

77. Y’all are crazy. Put on a T-shirt and some shorts.

v0gue_

100% agree. 70 at night, 80 (as the max) during the day. I work remotely in my underwear, and it's not a problem. Love saving the $$

bunny_ears21

We would probably live in the 78-80 range but our large, fluffy dogs like to run and play inside too so we live at 72-75 (wearing coats) to accommodate the babies. I'm not sure how anyone can be living with their air at 68 I would probably die.

Dangerous_Oven_1326

77!?!!!! You have to be joking!

AlexaPlayDdaeng

78 upstairs and downstairs. I use a fan downstairs if I need it during the day and have a ceiling fan in the bedroom. I do change the upstairs thermostat to 76 before I go to sleep

Aspirin_Dispenser

74 downstairs and 68 upstairs. All the bedrooms are on the second floor. Obviously, we like the bedrooms colder at night. We tried keeping it warmer during the day and only setting the temp low during bedtime hours, but the amount of power it takes to cool the space back down after letting it warm up is a total wash compared to just keeping. It that way all the time.

creektn

75 during the day and 72 at night. Doesn’t matter right now as a/c is out. Put a window unit in my bedroom.

anastasia_dlcz

69 at night. 71 during the day. I hate being hot.

LackOfMachinations

Currently 71.

HildegardofBingo

73/74º during the day and 68 at night.

Speedracer_64

75 during the day when I’m home. 68 to sleep.

heelxtiger

75-78 during the day. Off or 70-75 at night

Pleasantlyracist

73-74 day time. 71-72 night time.

Yslackin

69 year round

Phoenix_Rises6377

68 year round.

New-Squirrel-3046

74-75 in the day 72 at night…had to ease up to that though. I prefer 68 day 66 night but the nes bill would be crazy

Former_Mirror_4293

Luckily i work from home and my roommate doesn’t because i keep it at 74 during the day and the second she walks in the door she throws sweatpants and a hoodie on and gets mad about how hot it is, and turns it down to 68. I prefer it at night but definitely not running it all day.

ChaosRyus

68, I don't care if I'm paying more, if I'm in 70 too long I get sick and I rather eat a higher electric bill then an ambulance and hospital bill.

dislikesmoonpies

74 during the day, 71 at night

lukenamop

I can't sleep with the temp higher than 69. I used to keep it at 70 during the day but girlfriend kept complaining it was too cold so I'm trying out 72 this year. I'm liking it so far.

anachronizomai

We do 78 during the day and 75 at night.

Previous_Mousse7330

79° downstairs and 77° upstairs. I hate being cold. I wear a fleece jacket when I have to go into the office.

sleepylilblackcat

everyone who is saying below 79 during the day is batshit. this is the correct response. who has hundreds of dollars to spend on running a/c 30 degrees less that what it is outside? plus the environment fr

botanicmechanics

I can drape myself in silk and linen with fans and iced tea, be comfy at 80 inside and not hemorrhage my budget. I can, and I do.

sleepylilblackcat

amen! a couple fans, the right clothes, and a cold drink will literally make 80 beautiful especially compared to 100 outside!

shiznasty615

This is wild. Lived here all my life and it’s never been above 69

lowfreq33

Typically 70, but I’m not entirely sure the thing is accurate.

jammasterjeremy

This. Thermostat placement in your house has the biggest impact. 72 in one house can feel 68 in another.

johnsmith0401

It stays 73 in the summer unless it reaches 100 outside then as low as 71 and in the winter it stays at 70 or 71

crowcawer

I usually sleep during the day. Huge secret the HVAC / NES consortium doesn’t want you to know about.

catonsteroids

Almost always 74-75. 76 sometimes. It’s off if it’s cool enough outside though (60s or below).

Afraid_Actuary1153

Day: 78 when not home, 73-75 when home Night: 71

gjaebsys

74 during the day 73 at night lol

dizizcamron

I find it's much more about humidity and air flow vs actual temperature. If my system is set to 78 when it's 80 outside I would die, but when it's 95+ it feels fine. This is because the unit is working enough that the humidity is kept low and the air is being circulated. I also use ceiling fans when needed.

omashuvagabond

To whatever tf I want because utilities are included in my rent

NashvilleTypewriter

68° I know. But I'm from here and fed up with this moist, hot ass bullshit

Yukiko_91

75 during the day and 60 at night. I would rather have the house cold as hell and snuggle in a comforter like it’s winter while I’m sleeping then sweating naked in bed and barely able to sleep. Also barely use the heater during the winter because I prefer the cold any day everyday.

TifCreatesAgain

68!

thedeadlyrhythm42

I have a basement that stays cool so I keep it set to 79 or even 80 and it's about 10 degrees cooler downstairs so I just stay down there. I drop it down to 73 or 74 at night and have a small fan pointed at the bed. Actual temperature in the bedroom is closer to 69-70 due to the fucked up nature of my hvac system.

GymAndGarden

68 day, 66 night

lookloo002

72 night, 74 day

ayokg

73, 74 when real temp is over 90 during the day. I also sleep with a fan directly pointed at me from April to September lol house is under 800 sq ft and shaded most of the day so our bill isn't that high

RayExotic

72, 68 at night

Baron_Boroda

74 through the day, 72 at night.

Kannon_band

75 with ceiling fans running

Blueberry_Mancakes

72-74 and it feels closer to 70 usually.

critterwalk

70 when I sleep, and I turn it off as soon as I wake up. When it reaches like, 78 inside during the day I’ll put it on 75. I care about having the windows open more for a breeze lol

YourUnusedFloss

Usually it's set to 74. Ends up about 80° upstairs during the day unless I run the blower non-stop.

Big_Bottle3763

73 usually

Hwmix

74/75 day if home - 78 if out. 68/69 in the evening/bedtime.

70. I never change it

Santosha3

75 upstairs/ 75 downstairs

Holsch3r

Normally keep ours at 74

MzIndecisive

74 lowest, 76 highest. I have it on a schedule. If we're having company over and will be going in and out from the patio, and letting heat in, I might lower it.

SilverCat70

~73. Did have to turn on the vortex fan in my room today. The other rooms upstairs stay cool with ceiling fans. Mine needs extra help.

state_citation

Three floors and disparate temps between them. Thermostat on middle floor. 78° when away for workday. Programmed to go to 74° around the time I get home. 72° for bedtime, but my room is usually 4-5° cooler. I have a new HVAC system which is gobs more efficient than the 25+ year old one it replaced. There is still a struggle when it is 95° outside for extended times. I try not to push it excessively.

Oh gosh, y'all would freeze me. We do 76 during the day and 75 at night.

RockyBalbroah

I try to keep mine at 71, wife puts it to 74. 76 when we leave house

NotAsSmartAsIWish

I lived most of my childhood and a good portion of my adult life in Tennessee with no a/c, so any makes me happy.

mustbethedragon

68 or 69 during the day, 66 at night. I don't sleep well if I'm warm at night.

CaptainLoneRanger

This... Pro tip: A Bedjet will change your life.

Far-Helicopter-2845

50° that's then only way it will cool. I keep on for intervals of about 10 min when it's very hot.

VCinOhio

My husband and I have come to a peace agreement that the AC will be set at 75 and no lower. I still have to wear a sweater in the house. When he does overnight deliveries or housesits for his nephew, I turn the the AC to 78-80 where I'm comfy.

lappelduvideforever

74, BUT we have thermal blackout curtains on the windows. Our house is chilly. Without these curtains, I couldn't stand 74. Our bill for a 2000sq ft home is about 180 a month.

alg822

The last couple of days 76.

ohno1tsjoe

Between 68°-71°

tiamat-45

75. Anything below that and I turn into a ice sculpture.

JJShadowcast

Mine was set at 72 last night and I was debating if it was too cold.  Mind you, 64 at night in the winter is awesome, so who knows?

CyndiMo23

75° during the day … 74° at night

BakeJealous

Keeping that ish 72 degrees all year round babyyyy that’s the sweet spot

[deleted]

78 degrees summer, 68 degrees winter

one-hour-photo

75 or so in the day. Cooler at night

PierogiAndNegroni

I’m about to relocate from South Florida where I keep it 76-77 during the day and treat myself to 73 at night .. I can’t wait to be comfortable inside my own home

TravelingLady3424

66

MotoYogi

80 during day, 78 at night.

rocketpastsix

72-74 during the day, 68-70 at night. We also have a few tower fans in the house to help push air around (no ceiling fans yet), and a dehumidifier that seems to help as well.

Frequent_Device7390

76-77 average lately. Less clothing and ceiling fans are on too. Sometimes I feel a chill and click it to 78 for a bit.

Different-Pie-6502

Growing up in south georgia, my parents would have it at 78 during the day and 74 at night. That was a little high for me personally, so I do 70 at night and 74 during the day and that’s more than cool enough for me. But everyone’s heat tolerance is different I suppose

jokersmile27

76 day 72 at night.

tennesseejeff

We have an ecobee (love it). Set it to 75 daytime (8A - 8P), 72 night time, 80 away. So, if no one is home, it gets pretty warm, but not past easily recoverable in 30 min or so.

thatskinnytjkid

7 year old apartment. During the day 78, but it rarely gets that high to kick on. For sleepy-time, 70.

House 67-71 year round...and still sleep with a fan/ bed jet

External-Nebula2942

I'm always cold so mine is at 76 to 78

Holiday-Rest4975

76. And in the evenings it can be downright chilly. Even my 14 year old granddaughter spending the night last night said she was cold and put her hoodie on to bed.

smedleybuthair

72 during the day curtains drawn, 69 degrees from 11 PM to 7 in the morning.

MarianLibrarian1024

78 when I'm gone and 72 when I'm at home.

71 year round, open up the house if it's between 60-75 outside

RudyGreene

77⁰ in the day; 71⁰ at night.

WideJohnson

Can’t sleep above 68

ThunderClatters

78-80 during the day and 74 at night

ThunderClatters

People who can’t tolerate their house hotter than 74 degrees: do you not enjoy a 75 degree day outside? Do you guys not tolerate being outside at all?

Traditional-Can-1438

I keep mine at 75, I have two huge Bradford pear trees in my front yard that shade most of my house. They’re invasive and they stink in the spring but I am thankful for them.

jonneygee

We keep it on 76° while we’re gone to work, and it drops to 74° when we return home. That way we’re not pushing it as hard during the hottest part of the day when we’re not there for it to matter anyway. We’d go higher but then it would have to work too hard to pull the temp down in the late afternoon and end up costing us just as much. We keep it on 72° at night.

Beanbith

I work outside, so 70. My comfort when not working is more important than the electric bill.

WFU_Showtime

I keep it 73 or 74 during the day, 68-70 at night (though i turn the downstairs where there is no one sleeping up during the night)

VintAge6791

I have a small herd of cats, so I do about 70-72 at night so I can sleep, 73-75 during the day so they can sleep. Seems to work okayish.

Naive_Ad1466

67°

Ryan7817

We set the thermostat at 66 when we get up since we’ll be leaving soon after. It gets pushed back to 63 at bedtime. Idk how y’all are comfortable at 75+ let alone sleep in that kind of heat.

Ohm-S

69; because the number is funny.

rolltidecville

72-74 during the day, 68-70 at night. I forgot to turn it down the other night from 72 and woke up at 4 am sweating head to toe. Don’t know how you people do it
