I don’t get the point of this comment, Jrue already got passed Donte so you’d rather have Jrue get an open layup or maybe semi-contested with Draymond rotating over an open Ingles 3?
It’s just funny because one of our biggest problems this season has been over helping and leaving shooters wide open for three late in quarters. But it actually won us this game. Was obv a great play by Steph. This sub is brain dead though and can’t take a joke.
He's always so clutch on defense, even more so in the Playoffs.
He's genuinely an elite defender. But obviously the Warriors are incentivized to de-emphasize him on defense in order to protect against foul trouble and save his energy.
But if he was a defensive specialist, he'd be elite IMO.
He's not an elite defender. However he's learned how to be in the right position all the time. That speaks to his endurance and his ability to switch and cover for his teammates when needed.
However, as an on ball defender, he's not elite.
He's definitely evolved into not being a liability on defense but by no means is he elite.
Yeah he isn't exactly Gary Payton or Tony Allen. But he can hold his own against most point guards on ball, and is strong enough to not get totally abused by bigger players. Is he going to be able to guard prime Lebron or James Harden? No, but most people can't
Elite is pushing it, but not being a liability is reductive.
He’s in the great tier of guard defenders. Tiers below Holiday, but way better than average
Defense is such a hard thing to evaluate statically so I honestly can't differentiate between average or above average.
Plus I'm not trying to rank him against every other guard at this moment. He's probably somewhere between average and above average and I don't have the energy to argue between those two.
Either way, we can agree he's not elite.
I'd agree with that. He's good enough to have some highlight moments and hold his own most the time. Which considering his offense output being anything more than a total liability on defense is amazing. I bet a lot of teams would still want curry even if he was a terrible defender.
Idk about elite, but he’s been at the top of defensive rating and def win shares for guards almost every season since they’ve been winning championships
Yes because he normally shares the court with plus defender.
By no means am I suggesting he's Trae Young, but let's not pretend like he's Jrue Holiday***.
He did improve it a lot tho, i think beginning of his career he was a liability than he was below average during 2015/2015
But he got more muscle now and doesnt get bullied. And last playoffs i think especially in clutch moments he was elite. Not during the whole games but in the clutch he was a monster somehow.
Edit: i guess he was a monster either way in the finals. I think this was his most career defining chip. No one thought they would win it (preseason preplayoffs prefinals) he basically willed them to it
He isn't an elite defender but he is an elite hustler due to which he is always there. When you get in a good position, more than 60 % of the work is done, after this he sometimes gets the block/steal and sometimes fails.
I’d say he rises to the occasion on defense in the clutch. It’s sheer guts, willpower and adrenaline that helps him stand out when its winning time. Clearly, he doesn’t have the typical tools of elite defenders- length, size, and strength. Although he’s bulked up enough to hold his own.
Being in the right place at the right time doesn’t require any of that. At the end of the day, Curry does his part on defense.
> However, as an on ball defender, he's not elite.
I meant overall defender.
But yeah agreed there's certain aspects of defense (e.g. shotblocking) you can cherrypick where he's not elite.
Yeah, I can understand people not accepting that he is an "elite" defender. I just get super defensive when people call him a negative on a floor. He certainly has not been that since like 14 and 15ish.
People forget he's 6'3", he's not really that small for his position. I think if defense was his main gig he could be "elite". His motor is insane. Imagine all that energy he expends on offense being re-focused on the defensive end lol
Elite defender is a bit much, but he’s still great, and severely underrated. In his “prime” he was kinda dogshit just due to his size but since bulking up a bit slowly and over the years, he’s grown to be quite the good defender. Always knows where to be just sometimes gets lost or doesn’t have the size
Not elite, but I feel like it was only recently I saw someone talk about how good he is at hedging and recovering especially during the playoffs. He’s also the main scorer while being attacked or brought into the action on the other end.
> He's genuinely an elite defender.
come on now. He has been good, and at times great. But he's nowhere near elite.
>But if he was a defensive specialist, he'd be elite IMO.
There have been superstars who's been great on both sides of the ball. Jordan, Kobe, LeBron, Kawhi, Giannis... Even though these guys especially late in their career cruised on defense, they've all shown the ability to play elite defense for sustained amount of games and years, not just a few games here and there. I'd understand if you were talking about them and saying 'they could be elite had they not carried so much offensive burden'. Curry though?
Holy shit you are right haha
My girlfriend AND my mom both hate curry because he has his mouth guard out all the time and they think it’s gross. They always joke that it’s basically like gum for him and never actually acts like a mouth guard
Now I can’t unsee it… he’s literally always chewing on it, or has it in his hand
Lowkey surprised it didn’t go for a hundred times that, maybe because it was back in 2016, three titles ago. Seems like such a unique thing from one of the greatest of all time could go for millions lol
Love Jrue man but frequently he gets tunnel vision on kinds of plays like this, which is frustrating. Jingles was open and catching fire from 3s, could have passed the ball to him instead of forcing a shot
That’s fine but I’d still expect him to finish over steph curry. Instead of just going up strong he got kind of cute like he didn’t quite process who it was.
That's not fine. While I really love Jrue til death, he has been really reckless and playing selfish in crunch time. This makes him more readable down the road for opposing teams in playoffs
Not mad about the L with Giannis out, but just upset with how we've taken it by playing dumb Bucks basketball
Everyone would be clowning him like Ben Simmons if he didn't try to finish over Curry. He really should've been able to make that with only Steph at the rim.
I had a ref explain that they look at the direction both players move in after contact to determine who initiated. Jrue continues on his trajectory, Steph gets pushed back from where he started. Contact clearly initiated by Jrue.
I mean tbf what separates curry and jokic is that their both neutral level defenders (curry is probably a slight positive) but Pg defence is just far less important than a centre, so jokic is just more crippling to your infrastructure due to the nature of his size.
I actually think jokic has been better offensively the past 2 seasons than curry as Steph has slightly declined (his rosters have also gotten far worse offensively) but the defence is what let’s Steph hve an argument as the better player
Curry obviously still out classes Jokic when it comes down to important basketball. It might change this year but the levels reached by Lebron and Curry when they turn it on and play serious basketball have been abve every player in the league except maybe Giannis. I’m sure it will be the same for Jokic and Luca and other guys in a few years over their younger peers. But what Curry did in the playoffs was more impressive and better play than Jokic has had in his career and until curry falls off a bit more and Jokic does serious damage in the playoffs. He’s obviously the superior player and I think that’s more clear than ever the last few weeks
Steph is having a 50/40/90 season and hasn't even done that since 2015. He's been injured but I don't think his production when healthy has declined at all.
Steph is literally the only player ever to be that efficient while scoring 30 ppg. https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/11p5emc/stephen_curry_is_only_02_ppg_and_04_fg_away_from/
Because scoring and league wide efficiency is up which means, making his numbers not as insane as they were in 16
The warriors aren’t a juggernaut offence anymore?
He had a consistently higher motor back in the day.
He’s my favourite player man, it’s okay to admit
Steph is a much more well rounded player at 3 level scoring than he was in 2016
He's way stronger nowadays, which made him much better finisher at the rim and effective ISO player
2016 Steph might be a better regular season player but on post-season when you gotta constantly win 1v1s and create shots out of thin air I'm easily taking current Steph
> Because scoring and league wide efficiency is up which means, making his numbers not as insane as they were in 16
This doesn't mean Curry has declined tho? It just means the rest of the league is starting to "catch up"
That's not how any of this works. His own scoring and efficiency is practically unchanged from 15/16 (his peak).
The rest of the league catching up (thus reducing relative advantage) has nothing to do with him.
He's not declining—the rest of the league is just starting to catch up
Jokic is the best offensive player in the league, it’s not a slight to say curry is lower lol.
Though a flaming Curry is unstoppable, whereas Jokic doesn’t really have those moments of pure insanity, he’s a more level player
I’d say a lot of Steph Stan’s would disagree, so I’m honestly surprised you or I aren’t downvoted for the opinion (and Steph is my current favourite player lol).
I think curry’s motor doesn’t rev as highly as nikolas in the RS anymore, and it makes jokic the better RS offensive player.
PS wise I think the gap shrinks, but I think the real problem for jokic in the PS is his D (but we haven’t seen him with a strong supporting cast really lol - rivers and facu is not a backcourt you want defending star level guards in the offs)
I actually think they’re going to end up the 2 offensive goats (and not luka, who seems to get lumped into these future offensive goat convos)
Really underrated helpside defense. He saw that weakside wasnt able to contest so he moved from strong to help. Amazing split second decision making from curry

Do not do a bock please
Honestly, they probably call that a foul if rolls were reversed, smaller guards get that call. Bigger defenders get that foul called on them. I love the no call, feels like we dont let guys play any defense these days.
Jrue has been pretty animated/clear about when a foul call is missed this game and he didn't even complain here, pretty damn clean block on replay too.
Lotta contact on that. Lots of missed calls on GS in the final minute or two. That being said we had a couple of dumb mistakes too, so can't complain too much.
This fucking team. that gets called a foul on every other non CA team. I can't even watch them anymore on primetime against anyone other than my team, I get so frustrated with the ridiculous whistle for them. Enjoy your win, refs earned it.
https://twitter.com/_JordanJimenez/status/1634789819594473472?s=20
I don’t know if you’re campaigning for phantom calls or what but would love for you to point out where there is a foul taking place here (see pic in tweet)
[Come again](https://twitter.com/_jordanjimenez/status/1634789819594473472?s=46&t=SBW3XJi-eEDBr6FtvDfngg)? Steph somehow manages to still leave daylight between their arms lol

2 WAY WARDELL
I like this phrase... I'm keeping it.
Can someone please convince Poole to copy this aspect of Curry's game instead of just copying the "take ridiculous shots" aspect.
Our defense is so cooked that we need Curry to rim protect
2 WAY PLAYER CURRY, LEAGUE AINT READY
2-Way Wardell
Skyscraper and Skyfucker
MAXIMUM DEFENSE
Which is fucking crazy, lol.
Stephen “Brook Lopez” Curry
Better rim protection than the MVP
I knew when I read the title and comment someone was going to say this lmao
Jokoc got like 3 last season, it's getting crazy
Stretchiest of stretch 5's.
Only because he left Ingles open in the corner lmao
I don’t get the point of this comment, Jrue already got passed Donte so you’d rather have Jrue get an open layup or maybe semi-contested with Draymond rotating over an open Ingles 3?

This is not an overhelp, though. Klay stunts at Jrue, and Curry rotates over because there is no one between Jrue and an uncontested layup.
Christ it was a joke and happened like 15 hours ago. Move on guy.
Defensive gem in the clutch

BANG! BANG! OH WHAT A BLOCK BY CURRY!
You mean BOCKED BY CURRY
Good thing he didn't chicken out.
DPOY

CUCKED BY CURRY (I wish)
With the mouthguard out lol
God forbid he ever actually takes a shot to the face cause that thing is never in his mouth lol

PRETTY SURE THAT'S NOT HOW YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO USE THE MOUTHGUARD BUT LET'S GOOOOO
I think after all these years, Curry has handled his mouthguard in every conceivable configuration using his teeth. Except for: on his teeth.
Curry’s dentist punching the wall every game
nah, a dental accident means more $$ for his dentist

Mouthguard? I think you mean fidget toy at this point lmao
Still keeps u from biting your tongue
How many mouth guards does Curry go through?
With our record probably too much
Warriors two of their best defenders are out so leave it to Curry. Lmao
Three*
Giga clutch by curry in those last two plays
That was goddamn legendary. 35 y.o. Curry with thr game saving rejection
dude didn’t even put his mouth guard in. GOAT shit
Truly inspirational
defensive juggernaut
Thank you Candace Parker for showing him how to block.

Probably was feeling himself after that clutch ass 3 earlier.
This. Ego fucked him over. Gotta overcome that and play unselfishly.
Stephen Gorbert!
BOCKED BY CURRY!
If I had a quarter everytime Curry had a bock...
Curry jumps straight up, all body contact came from Jrue. If you want that foul, you don't want basketball to be played.
In no world is his body and arm vertical when he goes up lol
He is until Jrue runs in to him
I had a ref explain that they look at the direction both players move in after contact to determine who initiated. Jrue continues on his trajectory, Steph gets pushed back from where he started. Contact clearly initiated by Jrue.
Jokic could never
I mean tbf what separates curry and jokic is that their both neutral level defenders (curry is probably a slight positive) but Pg defence is just far less important than a centre, so jokic is just more crippling to your infrastructure due to the nature of his size. I actually think jokic has been better offensively the past 2 seasons than curry as Steph has slightly declined (his rosters have also gotten far worse offensively) but the defence is what let’s Steph hve an argument as the better player

Curry obviously still out classes Jokic when it comes down to important basketball. agreed but Jokic hasn't been injured and he's probably the best offensive player rn
League wide efficiency has skyrocketed also - the average ts% is 57 now , vs 53 in 2016, which does matter.
It matters for how much relative advantage he produces—but it literally matters 0% in terms of whether Curry has "declined"
Steph is literally the only player ever to be that efficient while scoring 30 ppg. https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/11p5emc/stephen_curry_is_only_02_ppg_and_04_fg_away_from/

nuggets are literally the goat defensive team of all time in the clutch this year.. 🤡
At least you signed off the comment with your personal emoji
Ingles being wide open in the corner is the most frustrating part about this sequence
Clean block, haters can go cry about it. Curry hit 5 clutch shots in a row, and a clutch block. Best player in the NBA.
You had me in the first half, not gonna lie
What, you think it’s Giannis? Dude looked like a ghost out there
Dude is ass. What he did tonight, I can do easily, every day of the week
Dillon, stop this please

First All Defensive player Stephen Curry
Jordan Poole… take notes motherfucker. Curry at least gives effort and has improved on defense.
Really underrated helpside defense. He saw that weakside wasnt able to contest so he moved from strong to help. Amazing split second decision making from curry
Title says bocked because Curry swatted the L away
MVP carrying the team tonight
Jrue was horrendous at scoring tonight. Idk why he’s taking so many attempts
Jrue *so that’s what that feels like*
Curry handed the Bucks that L missing from the title.
bockin’ on these Jrues
Curry’s pitching now?!

Guard on Guard violence
Elite defender! Blocking shots and Affordable Housing! #GoatNIMBY
Steph Curry is a chicken confirmed.
He looks like he wants another championship
My GOAT and my Jrue!
I remember when people used to deny that Curry is an elite defender
he isn't. he's elite in the clutch and in passing lanes, but just normal 1 on 1 he's just decent. not elite.
and he’s small. i’m not gonna say he trash but he definitely not elite idk what guy smoking. he’s solid

"get in mah bellah" -- Adam Water, "The Waterboy." Haha, classic... 1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A bock is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of Do not do a bock please
bock
Chef Curry with da block boy
Jrue hits that 3 to take the lead and turned into a pumpkin immediately after Jesus Christ
Nice bock
Def clean block!
Those two awkward guys doing the double high five is how I see every Warriors fan lmao.
Maybe a foul but not super blatant. There’s worse that goes uncalled. Props to Curry
A little physical, but seems standard for a late game defensive play.
I thought it was clean. Tough defensive stand there.
Straight up
Never want to see that called at the end of the game
I say less on Curry and more on DiVincenzo from behind. Di was straight shoving dudes with no whistles.
Honestly, they probably call that a foul if rolls were reversed, smaller guards get that call. Bigger defenders get that foul called on them. I love the no call, feels like we dont let guys play any defense these days.
L2M gonna be fun tomorrow lol.
Are you insinuating that Jrue was fouled here?
Imo clean, but if the bucks lose, people gonna be arguing about this lol
That was super clean lol

Clean.
It was clean; I doubt they call that for Jrue unless his name is Lebron. what are you talking about?
..... celtics game bruh
This is a highlight of not the Celtics.
This is a highlight of not Lebron
Hmmm
Foul
Jrue has been pretty animated/clear about when a foul call is missed this game and he didn't even complain here, pretty damn clean block on replay too.
I may have overreacted but I’m not going anywhere
Learn the rules goofy
*fowl
Insane no call
Lol. Just a regular season game…. Good for him. 👏🏻
That's a foul if it's not under 2 minutes in the 4th
Warriors getting bounced in the first round

Bruh he just sank the go ahead 3 on previous possession what u talkin about
Lotta contact on that. Lots of missed calls on GS in the final minute or two. That being said we had a couple of dumb mistakes too, so can't complain too much.
You already did doe
That's a foul
If he gets a game winner im gonna puke
This fucking team. that gets called a foul on every other non CA team. I can't even watch them anymore on primetime against anyone other than my team, I get so frustrated with the ridiculous whistle for them. Enjoy your win, refs earned it.
https://twitter.com/_JordanJimenez/status/1634789819594473472?s=20 I don’t know if you’re campaigning for phantom calls or what but would love for you to point out where there is a foul taking place here (see pic in tweet)
Curry fouls the fuck out of jrue and we had to burn our challenge early ftfy
[Come again](https://twitter.com/_jordanjimenez/status/1634789819594473472?s=46&t=SBW3XJi-eEDBr6FtvDfngg)? Steph somehow manages to still leave daylight between their arms lol
