The people who refuse to relent on their takes on a prospect are hilarious to me. Keegan Murray is clearly good at basketball. The people talking about the % of his threes that were assisted, or how he doesn’t have a quick first step, or whatever it is they’re saying about him have their heels dug in and just refuse to admit they’re wrong lol Keegan is example 1A of how actually being good at basketball has become secondary to your “athletic potential” for a lot of teams and fans. In reality, the guys who can actually hoop are the ones with potential.

soku1

W Pistons fan.

RasheedAbdulWallace

This is our only wins we can obtain lmao

doctor_of_drugs

We’ve been stuck there for almost 20 years, we know the pain man. It will end one day, I promise.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Yeah we grew accustomed to him owning every night. Still shocking that they couldn’t win a game in the tourney but that’s Iowa basketball under Fran for ya.

SolarClipz

At least Clark is a superstar lol So close...

cjhoops13

Also worth mentioning that he went from barely getting playing time his freshman year (in Luka Garza’s shadow), to becoming the most statistically dominant player in CBB his sophomore year.

jcast59

Yea it was ridiculous how he wasn’t seen as anything but a sure thing. People got way too hung up on his age like not being a one-and-done means you can’t be a top prospect.

GunnerRocket

Sengun is another example of this. Keegan's own teammate Sabonis as well. Giddey.

LakerBull

And you have guys like Reddish, Bol Bol or Langford on the other side who are athletic, but lack anything else when it comes to being good at basketball but people still believe in their potential due to their athleticism.

TheHonPhilipBanks

Great points. Also of the dudes who shoots 3s more than half of the time, 90 pct of them are 80 pct+ assisted 3s. Weird criticism.

The record belongs to Anthony Morrow with 47.

jsDPT

Kinda tells you everything you need to know about summer league lol

JCL8661

To be fair, Anthony Morrow had an NBA career high of 42 points. When that dude got hot, he was kind of like a Klay Thompson-lite.

jsDPT

Yeah if he could defend competently, he would've had a very long NBA career.

pukeko214

What? Morrow was a sniper dude lmao. Made over 800 threes on a career 41% and had like 7 30+ bombs in the NBA

SokoJojo

PMURITTYBITTYTITTIES

The best part about Keegan is that he can exactly what you need him to be. Iowa needed him to be a garbage man with great energy when we had Luka in the middle and that’s exactly what he did, then when Luka left we needed him to be the star and he went out and won NPOY.

overhandfreethrow

I love when good players play in Summer League just to clown on them fools

ChannelNeo

Oh they mad cause he styling on em

Kgb725

Should've told him to get out their face

GunstarGreen

But is the cal on him?

rjcarr

It's not just "good" players, it's players with a year of NBA games under their belt. Murray wouldn't have been this good last year playing before his rookie season. I remember watching Giddy play last year in summer league and he looked like a man among boys. An NBA season really refines your skills. You either sink or swim.

IMDATBOY

I mean he won summer league mvp last year lol he’s better but it’s not just having a year of experience

cdillio

We shut down JDub already because he had 21 in the first half of game 1 lmao. He looked like he was playing middle schoolers.

hejendo76

yeah i lived in SLC last year and went to summer league and Giddey dominated. Glad I got to see Chet too before he got hurt

NBAgospel

It’s a valuable experience, especially with a guy like him. Think you’re above this because of last year? Prove it.

seaaking

still remember booker in his second summer league he was clowning everyone, you know someone just doesnt belong lmao

pcwgussej

iirc he was 6 points away from the Summer League points record?

HoyaDestroya33

Who set the record? KD?

Skeletor_is_god

Anthony morrow for golden state in 2009

HoyaDestroya33

I DID NOT expect that

Trailblazin15

Oh man that name is blast from the past lol. Dude was a sniper for a couple of seasons if not more iirc

TheWinStore

Best NBA 2K bench player for a year or two there

504090

He was a extremely accurate shooter for 8 seasons, and then his 3P% somehow plummeted to 31% in 2017 (which pretty much ended his career).

Hendo8888

I remember just checking the scores one day on my phone and I'm like 'who the fuck is Anthony Morrow and how did he just drop 37?' and it was like his 4th NBA game or something

optimistic_hsa

Ya, that was his first start. I actually really enjoyed watching the D-league warriors. In a time where it was rare for a D-league player to make the nba the warriors had a ridiculous number of them including multiple starters. The effort level was just fun to watch, even if they got creamed.

ATL_Hasher

Morrow also had the record for the most points ever scored in a rookie’s first start (since been broken). 37 points on 15-for-20. I believe this is also the record for the most points in a game by an undrafted rookie.

Jabarles

Morrow was a 2k cheat code for a minute lol

jennys0

I wanted him to beat the record until they said it was held by... Anthony Morrow.

transizzle

Anthony Marrow with 47

kyleb402

I think they said Anthony Morrow on the broadcast but don't hold me to that

shellfish87

It’s so funny when legit NBA starters play in summer league. Like child’s play. We did this with Bane (when he couldn’t even dribble yet) and it was completely broken.

xerxesthagreat

in an odd way i think keegan murray could be supersized desmond bane

SmithChristopher1

I’m hoping Marcus Sasser ends up being Bane Jr. Jr.

GlueGuy00

Letsgohomeca

PositionOk8409

He defs is. Bane isn’t that athletic

jcagraham

My favorite example was a second year Jonas Valaciunas playing summer league. Not only was he way more skilled than the borderline NBA talent he was playing against, easily scoring in the post with a variety of moves, but he was also WAY bigger and more athletic. Like freakishly so. I have to imagine everyone he played against thinking "shit...time to learn another language because there's no way I'm making the league if this is what I have to play against." Just a cool average of 19/10 with an 87 Def Rating for funsies.

Astro_Sloth

Jonas “get ready to learn chinese buddy” Valanciunas

t_ran_asuarus_rex

你好👋

HoyaDestroya33

The difference in level in Basketball is crazy. Saw a vide of Alex Antetoukunmpo destroying NCAA Div 1 player (or pro player outside of NBA can't remember). Then imagine Alex Antetoukunmpo playing 1v1 against a legit NBA starter then he'll be destroyed. What more against his MVP brother?

[deleted]

some real DBZ power level shit

DrOzmitazBuckshank

Bane, Giddy, Murray, and even Tony Snell destroyed summer league

Defacto_Champ

Tony Snell had a solid journeyman career. He stayed in the league a lot longer than most.

aapox33

No one puts up minutes like Tony snell

[deleted]

Jalen Williams Monday night was just toying with the jazz out there

nosole

Not a bad way to maximize a players potential tbh. I mean look at the contract Bane just got

IllMakeItUpNow

Lebron for 20 seasons or Keegan for 1?

NorQwerty

Lebron never took the Kings to the playoffs, Keegan did it first try.

KellerFF

And does summer league shortly after! I don’t want to hear about Bron’s minutes.

delamerica93

The only load Keegan is managing is mine

APOLLO_EiGhT

Also never won Summer League/ Summer League MVP

yerawizardIMAWOTT

Summer league MVPs Keegan:1 Lebron:0

vutuantu98

If the king doesnt even play for the kings then is he even a king? Checkmate

doctor_of_drugs

Seriously. He played his first NBA game against the Kings…maybe we’ll somehow get Bronny or Bryce and LeRoyalty can retire as LeKing

Phenomenal2313

Keegan in SL is a cheat code , different level than the rest , moves at a pace you only see regular NBA starters move at I remembered JR Smith doing the exact same thing in 2010

hejendo76

still have no clue why JR played that summer. 6 years in and averaged 15 a game that year off the bench

Phenomenal2313

Pure speculation but wasn’t that the summer where Melo and the Nuggets FO had some clash If anything maybe Smith was like I gotta be the first option and decided to try and be

Sethuel

I was at the game last night and people were doing Keegan Murray chants on the street for like fifteen minutes afterwards.

Owldoyoudo

All the people clowning the Kings for taking Murray over Ivey now crying because it’s “unfair” how good he is compared to other rookies and 2nd year players only a year later

bruin13

One day people will realize Monte McNair knows what he’s doing. Every single big move he’s made has been clowned and resulted in nothing but success for Sacramento.

rattatatouille

Vivek letting Monte cook is the best thing he's done as owner tbh

GunsmokeIV

It's up there with helping keep the team in Sacramento and installing a purple beam.

yungrobbithan

I fucking love Vivek now, used to be spotty in him but he’s proven he’s a great owner

Wonderful_Reserve_64

I strongly expect the 'cherrypicking' strategy to happen soon enough. And Vivek will have his moment then.

doctor_of_drugs

THE Beam* not just a purple beam, c’mon now.

dcab87

MALPRACTICE!!

darthfoley

Correct. There were a lot of bums in here clowning the pick or claiming it was a fit > BPA. I was always of the mindset that it was fit AND BPA. Of course it’s too early to say for sure, but the early returns look promising for Murray.

thatguy52

I expect ppl to keep this same “bUt He’S tOo GoOd” energy when Ivey is playing in summer league. JDub (2nd place ROTY) played last game and I didn’t hear a peep.

Someguynamedjacob

Ivey was incredible last year especially once he found his pacing towards the end of the year. I’m expecting Ivey to look similarly dominate on Saturday. Just wanted to say that to make the conversation less of a dig to Ivey and more of a “both of these guys look like great picks”

GothicToast

Ivey is also a year and a half younger and also had a great year last year. He will be an elite combo guard for years. Way too early to say one is better than the other. All things being equal though, the Kings needed Keegan way more than they needed Ivey.

Clammuel

Safe to say Murray is the better PF

snuffaluffagus74

Not even a Kings fan but the bashing of what the Kings did didn't make sense. They were both projected top 5 picks, even if you thought Ivey was better Keegan was a better fit, time was and position. Best player available sometimes doesn't make sense if you have a different timeline or system. Warriors are an example that took best player available in Wiseman and Kuminga and they traded Wiseman and want to trade Kuminga now.

Typhoid007

Keegan was the best player available. Monte Mcnair is a stats guy, Keegan's metrics were off the charts, Ivey's were mid. I doubt Ivey was even 5th on Montes board. This is the gm that drafted point guards (Haliburton and Davion) in the lottery in back to back drafts when they already had Fox on the roster. He said from day 1 he only drafts for best player available and said the same after drafting Keegan.

matt30399

Keegan "Keegan Murray" Murray

mildmuffstuffer

Murrayyyy

rjgator

Dudes just too good to be out there, though I’m kinda confused why he is out there?

Neuroxex

Because he never had a chance to self-create in meaningful amounts in the regular season. They want to see how well he does handling the ball and creating offense for himself. It is uh... Going well.

Letsgohomeca

So far so good!

Neuroxex

A success, I would say! And just to emphasise, if they said "Nah Keegan, you were a starter on a playoff team, you don't really need this" then I don't think they get to see him put all this into action in a game! Throwing him into Summer League has given the Kings, I'm sure, more confidence in more options for the regular season! That's why it's worth it!

-FuckenDiabolical-

He had a couple of questionable dribbles where he got stripped twice I think but overall not bad. I’d say though, he should keep working on his dribble.

Its_Hoggish_Greedly

Keegan said he’s doing this in part to remove the stigma around playing in Summer League, at least for our organization

Ezzy1998

That step back 3 was smooth af.

fangal2

He’s trying to play in a different way than his rookie season. He was primarily used as a catch and shoot player as a rookie, here he’s working on his playmaking, aggressiveness, and ball handling, and end-clock work. You can tell he’s still not comfortable with end of shot clock ball handling, as he got forced into a few turnovers.

LusciousCabbage

Those 15 free throws. They want to expand his game so he's a driving threat.

HoyaDestroya33

I mean, he is a sophomore so he can still play. Even though he is a starter on a legit Playoffs team, it's a good opportunity for him to play a different role other than a shooter.

Zhekadub

Getting his reps in. Expanding his game. More ball handling and whatnot

Standard_Landscape_6

He’s working on shot creation

dawnofthedunk_

Exactly this.

ScutumSobiescianum

It’s a better work out then at training. At least here there is some good match simulation. Whoever is eligible should always play

Bladex20

Because he was the 4th or 5th option on the team playing off ball primarily as a 3 pt shooter his rookie season. He didnt get a chance to chuck his ass off like alot of rookies do.

beforetherodeo

Second year player playing in real organized bball, why not? Shit more 2nd and 3rd year players should be.

B_M_Fahrtz

This is what I imagine sports talk hosts are referring to when they say “drafting and developing your stars.” Imagine if Keegan could be De’Aaron Fox 2.0

Pristine_Bike_7888

keegan could be more like Jayson Tatum 2.0

pepsidude102

keep going

TheTigerhawk

Because they wanted him to work on playing on-ball

pkeller001

Needs to work on his handling and one on one play in a live game situation since those are his areas that need the most improvement

make-that-monet

Everybody’s asking why he’s out there but I think summer league would be way more fun if more elite sophomores played

yungrobbithan

That’d be incredible

SacKing13

And 5 rebounds. Which is impressive since he only had 1 last game and scored more this game. He looks so much better coming off the dribble too, looking aggressive and wanting to score. Very excited for the season

I can't believe all the bozos clowning the Kings for taking this dude. He's gonna be way better than Ivey

Standard_Landscape_6

Keegan Murray will be the goat

Little_little_e

Yes. Even the Pistons fans laughed on the Kings when the draft selection was announced. Very pleased that Murray pans out, and contribute so much to the Kings.

[deleted]

Murray is good but Ivey is good too. Two things can be true. There isn’t a Kings fan that would trade Murray for Ivey, and I don’t think there’s a Pistons fan who would trade Ivey for Murray. They landed in good situations for each. Ivey was a rookie lead guard whose best teammate was… Bojan? And everyone knows how hard it is to be a rookie lead guard. And despite this, he improved all year, particularly in his question areas - perimeter shooting (shot better from 3 than Mathurin, on more 3 pt attempts per game), and passing. I don’t think I’ve seen a rookie improve so much across so many areas in his rookie year than Ivey, in fact.

Little_little_e

Yes. Even the Pistons fans laughed on the Kings when the draft selection was announced. Very pleased that Murray pans out, and contribute so much to the Kings.

HiImReal88

Keegan Murray can really hoop!

bagfka

What bro doing in the summer league lmao. He was a playoff starter. Just shows how much of a difference there is

JimmyV034

He probably worked on his game in last 2 months and he wants try new things in game especially with creating for himself. *i did not watch game* but a lot of players do that for summer league

Wallstreettrappin

He been playing 1 on 1 with Fox everyday. Keegan just out there trying some shit out

theREALMVP

It shows man. Hes done a few moves in the last two games that were straight out of Fox’s bag.

GunsmokeIV

He's even practicing how to shit talk, unfortunately it's not going well. Lmao

bigbluethunder

He should work on that with Tim Duncan

whynotitwork

Thats exactly what he was doing. Trying to create his own shot and not rely too much on Fox and Sabonis.

WIN011

Yea feel like there’s guys every year that will play a game or two and just absolutely go off and then not play the rest of the time cause they showed what they needed.

bagfka

I watched it and it was 100% that but it just felt like they could’ve limited his minutes. He played very deep into the fourth

shellfish87

Just doing side quests at level 100

[deleted]

He got the preorder bonus coming into the league and is in the starter zone with a shiny Deoxys.

mauro_membrere

Why not? Is it not "mamba mentality" that we always praise? Take every opportunity to get better? Learning how to take over games?

yungrobbithan

Keegan got that quiet mamba mentality. You can see he is a certified killer, just needs to get more experienced

Donnie3030

I know I’m not alone, but I truly think Murray will be the best player from last years draft.

yungrobbithan

I’m with ya, Jalen Williams is up there too for me they’re both hella fucking good

Donnie3030

Keegan, Chet and Jalen are my top 3 in order. If healthy I think they’ll all be incredible.

wwwwwwhitey

No Paolo ?

Its_Hoggish_Greedly

Recency bias. Paolo is going to be incredible. I think once the Magic show they’re ready to compete for the playoffs this year, people will realize he’s going to be really good.

soku1

That'd be impressive especially since he was supposed to be a old as fuck low ceiling draft pick.

spicydak

I am hoping for Sharpe. But that’s biased haha. Murray looking good as shit though

Standard_Landscape_6

This guys good I think kings should give him a 2 way contract

thegib98

Woah woah woah there buddy. I think it’s a little early. Let’s give him a year or two in Stockton before we make any rash moves like giving him a 2-way.

yunnglacksleep

This dude wanted to cook at the summer league & bro has not disappointed man he don’t belong here lmao

prfrnir

So...if I were on the Kings summer league team, I'd make myself look good by finding ways to get him the ball.

strollas

bro just having fun

PositionOk8409

External scouts saying they saw a Kawhi like second year improvement from Keegan might be pretty accurate

Pristine_Bike_7888

he will be much better than many rookies drafted before him, and I'm still mad at Portland for taking away Sacramento's dream of having the twins together.

mauro_membrere

People always bring up mamba mentality, but don't see that keegan is emulating it, he wants to get better every chance he gets. He wants to learn/feel how to takeover games, and he's getting clown for it?

Yo Kings setting up their own Big 3 huh. Spooky.

funboy51

I’ve been one of Murray’s toughest critics. I watched the entire game and yes it’s Summer league level talent…he should be the best on that floor…but he was the best and in seemingly every way. 3 blocks…. The key for my being impressed was not the stats…save the blocks anyway. It’s confidence and assertiveness. If he can translate that kind of confidence and assertive play to the main team…then I’m no longer his critic. I still contend the thing that limits him and worries me longterm is his self confidence…well and defense. This game in fact shows why my concern about his confidence is real. We never saw the player I saw last night in an NBA game…why? He clearly can play at this level of assertiveness. Last year, his confidence seems to vaporize too easily in moments of adversity. I fear he’s trying to be perfect and doesn’t have a short memory. He’s over thinking and just needs to relax and play. Some of this is coaching. I hope coach Brown, who seems to be a tough love guy, can help build his confidence and let him loose as a non-rookie now. If Murray can raise his scoring to 18-20 a game…and make us more balanced…we’d be looking at an offense closer to Denver. Who do you stop? Make a liar out of me Murray…please!

RansomGoddard

He did not belong out there.

DatDudeJakeC

Okay Kings Org… I think he can be done for the Summer League LMFAO
