Easily the worst thing Adrian Griffin did as hc, stotts could’ve been our hc now. I don’t despise doc nearly as much as all the haters here but would still rather have stotts.
Edit: reminder we didn’t “get rid of him,” he chose to leave the team
It was not confirmed false.
The Athletic reported that Rivers had served as an informal consultant to Griffin.
Doc admitted to frequently talking with Griffin but denied ever being paid as a consultant (the report never said he was paid).
IIRC Adrian Griffin randomly yelled at him in the first or one of the firsts practices trying to establish himself as the big dog and Stotts just went "I don't need this shit I'm out"
Yea but Warriors assistant is a pretty great spot too. Several have gone on to get HC roles upon their exit: Walton, Gentry, Green, Nash, Brown, Atkinson
Our position are just way too ambiguous and radioactive to an extent.
When everything is fine, you’re a hero but when shit hit the fan you getting death threats
I low key think Lebron ball needs less coaching than most roles anyway. Defensive schemes, be good at timeouts, manage fatigue. Otherwise the offensive game model is never going to (and tbf should never really) deviate from what is a very simple, and insanely effective style of play.
It’s the dichotomy of LeBron. LeBron ball is one of the greatest offenses we’ve ever seen. And LeBron himself is one of the most well rounded players ever. But you can literally only play Lebron ball to extract that mega value from LeBron. anything else lowers the offensive potency.
I’m not the biggest fan of the JJ hiring, but calling JJ a podcaster is so disingenuous.
If anything, the podcast made it clear that he is at least very knowledgeable.
Dumb af, multiple ex nba players with zero coaching experience have been hired as head coaches before, but because he had a podcast he’s just a “podcaster”. Typical
I don’t think he would work for us as head coach now but I do miss Terry even though a lot of blazers fans lost patience with him over the years. In hindsight I think he helped some of those rotations perform a lot better than they should have otherwise
He’s going to [fit right in…](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ftw/2017/10/27/steve-kerr-had-fun-wearing-70s-suit-to-honor-al-attles-during-warriorswizards/107092304/)
Yup. It's time to get back to defensive principals. Those transition 3s the Warriors are known for require good defense, which just didn't happen anymore with Klay playing big minutes (and just not CP3's style).
Crazy how when Klay is on the warriors he's so washed, yet as soon as he signs elsewhere he's better than two good role players. I love Klay, but he doesn't know who he is at this point in his career and I'm not sure I see this move going well for the Mavs.
The problem is not his skills, it's his ego and his buy in. He just needs to play a different role than he used to. If he would come off the bench and not chuck up contested shots he would be great. The problem is he mostly refused to do that last year. Maybe a change of scenery would help.
I just remember Wolves fans cursing Anderson’s name last season, I don’t think he’s the player he used to be either tbf. Melton is a good pickup but he as well has obvious limitations himself. At least Melton fits if they ever decide to actually retool (like if Lauri is indeed on his way there).
I just think the Anderson signing is not great tbh
Nah it’s better for us even if Klay is a better player. We aren’t going to be contending either way but Klay’s departure opens up development minutes for our young guys
We're gonna be the best play-in team. We're gonna fight and claw our way from 10 seed to 8th. Then we'll complete things off by getting gentleman's sweep on the first round.
Stotts is 66 years old, hard to imagine the Warriors transitioning to a nearly 70 year old coach after the Kerr era
(To be clear, I think this is a great hire for GSW, I just think Stotts HC days may be past him)
well as the other person pointed out, there was already a vacancy due to the death earlier this year.
but secondly, its not like the 7th coach on the 2nd row of the bench leaving for another job would be front page r/nba news that you would have heard about. so for all we know they could have already lost another 1 or 2 guys, and most likely it wouldnt have even been posted about here in the first place. no one knows those dudes names
It wouldnt surprise me if Kenny has taken 1 or 2 guys with him to cleveland (with the promise of moving to the 1st row of the bench or whatever). that kind of thing is pretty common
also I'm not even sure if there is a strict cutoff limit on how many coaches teams are allowed to have. so it seems entirely possible they could hire 2 guys while only having one vacancy (even if Deki's spot hadnt been open)
Terry gonna be on the other side of the Steph Curry experience. I remember him getting saucy when journalists kept asking him why he kept running drop defense during the Blazers series.
Somebody tell me what these guys are known for so I can sound smart at work tomorrow. If it was Vogel I'm all prepared to say he's a defensive minded coach, idk these guys.
terry stotts was touted as a offensive mind in portland and stack was touted as a good player development with the raps and grizzles.
stack was also the then d league coach of the year while with the rap d league team
Back when our G-League program was super vaunted and we won a G-League chip, Stack was the coach. Instrumental in the development of Siakam and VanVleet, among others.
Might be the safest bet to become HC again with a nice stability. Not so bad ownership, rebuild coming in a few years just a few hit piece if things go south
Great moves by the Warriors! Adding Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse to the coaching staff brings a lot of experience. Excited to see the impact on the team!
am i the only one who finds it interesting that most ex-player coaches were either high-iq players or role players that didnt get a lot of playing time, while stackhouse is the only exception being an inefficient chucker
No, I’m with you. My theory is it’s because they’re always part of the huddles, they get to see/hear how the coaches operate, etc. Basically, it’s like on-the-job training.
Take care of Terry. He’s a real one. Great offensive mind in the NBA. Very surprised he hasn’t had another shot at head coach. Dude overachieved here with some pretty mid rosters. We didn’t realize how good he was until billups came. Jesus.
Lakers in shambles but none of these guys are going to play second fiddle to a guy who haven’t coached yet. Very weird Walton isn’t coming back. Very weird of stotts unless GsW wants to implement that mover blocker system maybe they think with green and curry and Niels and Anderson they can implement it well
I went to a burger joint one time in Dallas and Jerry Stackhouse was there with a 2-3 others of his crew all decked out in full Mavericks gear eating burgers. That's all I have to say about that.
The warriors should’ve drafted Jerry instead of Joe Smith in 95. I mean, they should’ve drafted Garnett over both of them, but they definitely should’ve drafted Jerry over Joe. lol
What could he have done better? The end of a dynasty is usually not pretty.
His position is a tough one. Have to keep Curry’s window open, while getting under the tax threshold, and being present for the breakup with Klay.
That's like 3 head coaches
Our new Big 3
About 3 games in Steph gonna be saying “fuck the big 3 it’s just big me”
That's been the tune since 2022.
2023 really. Steph had help when they won the chip
Not the help we had pre covid though lol
Lmao
Don'y worry Terry Stotts will be elite at telling Steph Curry to never pass to Draymond and just shoot it himself instead (in a good way)
Who needs stacked roster, when you can stack coaches and outcoach everybody 😎
3-headed coaching staff!
Neopolitan Cerberus
They know they're going to be contending for the top job in a couple years.
Lakers have JJ and LeBron as coaches.
Stotts is a great hire. Can’t believe the Bucks got rid of him.
Easily the worst thing Adrian Griffin did as hc, stotts could’ve been our hc now. I don’t despise doc nearly as much as all the haters here but would still rather have stotts. Edit: reminder we didn’t “get rid of him,” he chose to leave the team
At least you have Ham
He is a great assistant coach
Terry is such a good coach and great guy. Hope the Blazers hire him again after we are done with Chauncey
Stotts is not a good head coach. Would have been terrible on the bucks. Probably a good assistant though
Ehhh. I’d argue he is.
Griffin knew Stotts was eyeing the big seat and sent him packing.
lol I mean he missed that doc was *also* doing it and actually succeeded lol
Didn't Doc outright say he had no clue why he got the HC job, and the Bucks shouldn't have done that
Doc was secretly consulting for the Bucks while he was still broadcasting games.
Yeah it was more like “can’t believe that work” from Doc lmao
[удалено]
It was not confirmed false. The Athletic reported that Rivers had served as an informal consultant to Griffin. Doc admitted to frequently talking with Griffin but denied ever being paid as a consultant (the report never said he was paid).
yeah it sounded pretty informal per Doc
Him saying that is just pre-throwing them under the bus. Now anything bad that happens cant be hit fault!
Does JJ Reddick even have a coaching staff yet? If not Pelinka should have been super diligent on coaches already, such as Stotts.
JJ got two names. Lebron and James.
Did they get rid of him? I thought Stotts chose to leave.
IIRC Adrian Griffin randomly yelled at him in the first or one of the firsts practices trying to establish himself as the big dog and Stotts just went "I don't need this shit I'm out"
AG: Acknowledge your Tribal Chief Terry: 🖕
Jacob Fatu must've missed shootaround.
Wasn't he just trying to coach up the guys and Griffin blew up at him? What a bum.
Middle manager shit
Pretty sure Stotts left on his own which surprised the HC. Lol like "wait I can't just treat my assistants like shit"?
r/rareterrys we are so back
My collection of rare terrys has been waiting for this moment.
Subs like this is why I still get on reddit
[My first thought.](https://i.redd.it/97nt2papk6171.jpg)
This lowers our chances of hiring him into our coaching staff significantly
Lakers Hire an Assistant Coach Challenge: IMPOSSIBLE
Prospective ACs should be super eager to work under JJ, there is a decent chance one of them can take his job in less than 6 months.
Yea but Warriors assistant is a pretty great spot too. Several have gone on to get HC roles upon their exit: Walton, Gentry, Green, Nash, Brown, Atkinson
I think he has a lot more job security than people think. Lakers r broke
WTF is Rob waiting for! Thats pretty crucial to make sure JJ has a staff he can lean on and pick their experienced brains.
Tommy Alter's driving a hard bargain.
Might as well go full in on the nepotism angle baybeee
he's turned us down several times
Probably understands the coaches never get credit with LeBron, except maybe Ty Lue.
Ty Lue didn’t get credit as a Cavs coach either. His reputation improved after the Clippers stint
Our position are just way too ambiguous and radioactive to an extent. When everything is fine, you’re a hero but when shit hit the fan you getting death threats
Can't say I remember fans sending death threats to an assistant coach before
I don’t think anybody is sending death threats to assistant coaches
Warrior lose and hire coaches before the Lakers hire a single assistant lol
Don't worry. JJ is searching among the best NBA podcasters to complete his coaching staff.
Jeff Teague and Gilbert Arenas are still available
Throw Evan Turner and Iggy in there too
Whatabout my guy Tommy Alter
Teague is actually coaching his old HS team right now, which officially gives him more coaching experience than JJ.
JJ coached his son’s Highschool or AAU team as well
JJ's kid is like 8
True prodigy, playing high school basketball at 8
Clearly the only way to settle this is to have their teams play
Jeff Teague on the sideline would be incredible
I'll take Jason Timpf then lol
I low key think Lebron ball needs less coaching than most roles anyway. Defensive schemes, be good at timeouts, manage fatigue. Otherwise the offensive game model is never going to (and tbf should never really) deviate from what is a very simple, and insanely effective style of play. It’s the dichotomy of LeBron. LeBron ball is one of the greatest offenses we’ve ever seen. And LeBron himself is one of the most well rounded players ever. But you can literally only play Lebron ball to extract that mega value from LeBron. anything else lowers the offensive potency.
player development is a thing
It’s coming down to bussin with the boys or barstool sports guys
Funny thing is I’d take both of them over jj. Stackhouse is fantastic, only a matter of time before he’s head coach
Helps when their head coach has coached professionally and isn't a podcaster
I’m not the biggest fan of the JJ hiring, but calling JJ a podcaster is so disingenuous. If anything, the podcast made it clear that he is at least very knowledgeable.
Dumb af, multiple ex nba players with zero coaching experience have been hired as head coaches before, but because he had a podcast he’s just a “podcaster”. Typical
Congrats Terry
Shame it's not a HC job.
Wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a HC job after a few years of being an assistant
That seems to be the trend with Warriors assistant coaches. Assistant coaches during the dynasty: Kenny Atkinson(21-24) -> Cleveland 24 'Mike Brown(16-22) -> Kings 22 Willie Green(16-19) -> Pelicans 21 Luke Walton(14-16) -> Lakers 16 Kings 19 'Alvin Gentry(14-15) -> Pelicans 15 Kings 20 Mike Malone(11-13) -> Kings 14 Nuggets 15
We set our assistants up well tbf
Podz and Moody gonna be Allstars in 2 years
Upvote this person
lol I wouldn’t even be surprised. Stotts knows how to get dudes buckets, his schemes on offense were cool
I don’t think he would work for us as head coach now but I do miss Terry even though a lot of blazers fans lost patience with him over the years. In hindsight I think he helped some of those rotations perform a lot better than they should have otherwise
I actually do think he'd work for us now. He could probably do great things with Scoot. However, I don't see him wanting to go through a rebuild
Stackhouse was a great coach for 905 raptors, I think he will be great for helping out the younger guys.
I was shocked he didn’t go to the league after 905. He was damn good with in game adjustments
He was terrible at Vandy. Best he could take us was NIT quarterfinals.
Dude it’s vandy
Quick post your [Rare Terrys](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2F9geadk5bazby.png).
He’s going to [fit right in…](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ftw/2017/10/27/steve-kerr-had-fun-wearing-70s-suit-to-honor-al-attles-during-warriorswizards/107092304/)
draymond cant act up now with stack on the bench
Or, maybe he’s coming in as a sparring partner for Draymond to hone his skills.
not a surprise honestly. terry is gonna have some fun.
These are great hires. But damn, why didn’t they do this 2 years ago?
List of unemployed coaches Lakers can still hire to help JJ: Byron Scott Luke Walton Frank Vogel
Vogel would be a good hire but lakers burned bridges with him, Dwane Casey too
Almost like Vogel would be a good head coach for the Lakers. I think the might be scared of being a scapegoat though, not sure.
darvin ham
A little early for Dame free agency but they’ll be ready
W for them
Used to have a Stackhouse jersey as a fat white kid in middle of PA.
What adult did you grow up to be?
Not quite as fat white dude in the middle of PA
Good for you bro 👍
Warriors fans, please carry the torch over at /r/rareterrys
If you struggle to improve in the FA market, might as well improve through coaching
They've already improved. Melton plus Anderson is better than Klay unfortunately.
In a vacuum, I think I'd take Anderson and Melton over Klay and CP3.
Yeah, they're better NBA players in a vacuum. But the exchange makes our "who else can score points besides Steph" problem worse.
Yup. It's time to get back to defensive principals. Those transition 3s the Warriors are known for require good defense, which just didn't happen anymore with Klay playing big minutes (and just not CP3's style).
Our spacing is gonna be 2000's Detroit bad tho
Homer take I’m guessing
Well we shall see right. Every year we see teams do great on paper only for it not to work out that way.
Definitely agree with that.
Crazy how when Klay is on the warriors he's so washed, yet as soon as he signs elsewhere he's better than two good role players. I love Klay, but he doesn't know who he is at this point in his career and I'm not sure I see this move going well for the Mavs.

At least Melton fits if they ever decide to actually retool (like if Lauri is indeed on his way there). I just think the Anderson signing is not great tbh
Fair enough. I'm rooting for Klay over there. I hope he can get some of the magic back.
I feel like ppl are underestimating what Melton and Anderson can bring along with the growth of our youth assuming they show for it..
Nah it’s better for us even if Klay is a better player. We aren’t going to be contending either way but Klay’s departure opens up development minutes for our young guys
Nah he’s right, but we’re still a play in team.
We're gonna be the best play-in team. We're gonna fight and claw our way from 10 seed to 8th. Then we'll complete things off by getting gentleman's sweep on the first round.
You’ve improved from a play in team, to a play in team? Doesn’t sound like much of an improvement to me
and you guys improved from 2 players who can score, to 2.5
Brother, we made the finals, that’s not the dig you think it is
And you got swept aside from an intentional loss
Doesn’t change the fact that we made the finals 😂 seems our scoring was just fine anyway doesn’t it 😂😂😂
you can't possibly think that when you got obliterated in the finals. if you're okay with never winning it all I guess it's fine
I didn't say it was lol
Feels like either one of those guys can be the Kerr replacement in a couple years.
Stotts is 66 years old, hard to imagine the Warriors transitioning to a nearly 70 year old coach after the Kerr era (To be clear, I think this is a great hire for GSW, I just think Stotts HC days may be past him)
Stack could be ready to lead the youngins by then.
Who did the Warriors lose and why are they hiring two? They lost only Kenny so far, no?
Deki
well as the other person pointed out, there was already a vacancy due to the death earlier this year. but secondly, its not like the 7th coach on the 2nd row of the bench leaving for another job would be front page r/nba news that you would have heard about. so for all we know they could have already lost another 1 or 2 guys, and most likely it wouldnt have even been posted about here in the first place. no one knows those dudes names It wouldnt surprise me if Kenny has taken 1 or 2 guys with him to cleveland (with the promise of moving to the 1st row of the bench or whatever). that kind of thing is pretty common also I'm not even sure if there is a strict cutoff limit on how many coaches teams are allowed to have. so it seems entirely possible they could hire 2 guys while only having one vacancy (even if Deki's spot hadnt been open)
Awww fuck
lakers are done
Always thought Stack was better suited for the NBA. No idea why he took the Vandy job. It's damn near impossible to succeed at that job.
Terry gonna be on the other side of the Steph Curry experience. I remember him getting saucy when journalists kept asking him why he kept running drop defense during the Blazers series.
JJ announce Burke, Jefferson and SVG already.
Development is the plan then. Good.
Stotts should be a very good hire. surprised Pistons did not going for him. I dont know much about stackhouse coaching though.
Back when our G-League program was super vaunted and we won a G-League chip, Stack was the coach. Instrumental in the development of Siakam and VanVleet, among others.
Stackhouse was the reason the raptors 905 turned into the bench mob in 2017, great player development guy.
Strong hires. Maybe one of them can even replace Kerr eventually.
Kind of shocked Phil Handy is still out there. I’d love the Hawks to hire him.
The warriors have a better coaching roster than players roster at this point
No luxury tax on coaches. May as well hire them all
r/rareterrys lives on!
Stackhouse promised me Aaron Nesmith would be an All-Star when we drafted him that's all I got
2 names I haven't heard in a while. Both good hires though
Might be the safest bet to become HC again with a nice stability. Not so bad ownership, rebuild coming in a few years just a few hit piece if things go south
And if they wanted to coach sooner, they could break Kerr's back and no one would think anything of it because of his chronic issues
Good. Fresh blood
Warriors trying to get BI?
JJ Reddick meanwhile twiddling his thumbs.
So this is basically a job interview to replace Kerr for both of them.
Take care of Terry. He’s a real one. Great offensive mind in the NBA. Very surprised he hasn’t had another shot at head coach. Dude overachieved here with some pretty mid rosters. We didn’t realize how good he was until billups came. Jesus.
Not terry johnson
If you couldn’t beat them, join them… maybe too late for that.
Bucks fans have to be on suicide watch since April 2023
great hire yesterday i was thinking how crazy it is stotts wasn't coaching especially after milwaukee
Hiring Stakehouse and Stotts ranks up there with the best moves they've ever made.
Warriors ex head coach rehab clinic going strong
Is hiring Jerry Stackhouse a setup to get Brandon Ingram to sign with the Warriors?
I don't even remember why now but I wanted Jerry Stackhouse to be hired by the Knicks back before they hired Fizdale (I think?)
this is an L hire imo
Looks like Kerr about to exit the warriors too
Great hires for their upcoming first round exit
The warriors should’ve drafted Jerry instead of Joe Smith in 95. I mean, they should’ve drafted Garnett over both of them, but they definitely should’ve drafted Jerry over Joe. lol
Good coaches but the Dunleavy rein as GM grades an F.
What could he have done better? The end of a dynasty is usually not pretty. His position is a tough one. Have to keep Curry’s window open, while getting under the tax threshold, and being present for the breakup with Klay.
We should have Jokic and Giannis already /s
