That's one of the cool things about shooting on well-preserved motion picture film captured by skilled shooters. It lasts forever.

Johan_Sebastian_Cock

See: The Who's promo video for 'Who Are You' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNbBDrceCy8 Keith fuckin Moon, man

truthesda

I'm a filmmaker (who's actually shot film) and this is a contentious point between many of my small circle of award-winning filmmakers to this day. Sadly cost is the biggest obstacle, and most of my film pals would rather budget for an extra 5 days of shooting, over having a glorious medium that is history-ready. It certainly isn't cheap. I shot, developed, and converted to HD just 45 minutes of footage for a short film and the final subtotal was $13K+

BCP27

From what I've read, the choice used to be about quality, but digital these days is phenomenal. You can get a certain je ne sais quoi from film that some big name directors like, but usually you'd only do it for a nostalgic vibe. On the cost, I remember reading a book back in college that was clearly from the 90's on how to make a movie for only 10k, and a boatload of that cost was the film itself.

truthesda

Digitals awesome, but as a DP of a 16mm short film and a director of a 16mm short film, there's something awesome about capturing in film; I have reels of my directed film negative in a closet and I could blow that stuff up to IMAX levels without losing quality and it would still look like it was shot yesterday (ca. 2010). I am also a hypocrite, and my award-winning Masters degree thesis film was shot on the ARRI Alexa (the RED competitor that has lensed films like Skyfall and while the experience was good, it wasn't ultimately the same -- all came down to access and $$$). "Fix it in post" is kind of a meme, but there's part of it that's true. A lot of inexperienced DP's shoot a film on a RED not knowing how to use the technology, then degrade the ones and zeros to the point they can't really get that fidelity back trying to color in the edit not knowing the breadth of the technology at hand. I point to homie who posted that Who video. Tungsten/non-daylight balanced lights were hot then, and so while the color looks a little off (or nostalgic) there's no comparison if you're able to afford it/use modern advances in the digital space to correct things like that. In 2022, you can make "non-nostalgic-looking things" that will be available for 8K, 12K, and 18K advancements 30+ years from now. You simply cant do that shooting a 4K film in 2013 digitally. The "video is as good as film now" is a completely wrong argument to have. It's about patience and $$$ consideration. Fidelity wise, Film currently has no match and more than a few sets aren't taking the planning care to light/expose shots properly (it was a mechanical process), but hard drives shooting a million takes of something is a lot cheaper than doing it on film.

abhi91

It's not just that. Because of the costs involved, there's more pressure on the talent to get it right as a performance since the other take is going to be expensive. On the flip side digital allows fincher to take 200 takes

QUEST50012

One of the great things about film is the grain makes it look like a different reality, making it seem instantly mythical or like you're look at a slice of history. Really magical medium.

TheELITEJoeFlacco

That was soooooo cool. Thank you for sharing :)

OnlyOneFunkyFish

Kinda random, but as a the Who fan, it feels strange seeing them posted on the NBA sub. Keith Moon, along with John Thunderfingers Entwistle made the best rhythm section in the history of rock.

Hotwheelsjohnson

Bonham and JPJ?

Avatar_of_Green

I think being objective Entwistle played much more complicated rhythms usually and also more bass solos and such. As for drummers both of those guys are A+, 99 overall legendary players. Like, them and Peart and Buddy Rich are probably the Mount Rushmore of drummers. It's really just down to what you like, not who's better.

[deleted]

My favorite version of that song for sure.

busterak47

I like how they just taped the headphones onto Keith's head

KingReffots

I’ve read before he was the inspiration for Animal on the Muppets and I 100% see it now

astronomy8thlight

Awesome, thanks for sharing.

LordHussyPants

> well-preserved crucial words lol. the BBC lost a heap of footage of old shows and recordings because they didn't look after it at all

dazedjosh

Fuck, that's right. They lost multiple seasons of Dr Who amongst that lot didn't they? Never to be seen again. It's so weird to think that shows from my parents era are just lost forever.

busterak47

not just that, I believe they actively destroyed/re-used tape after two broadcasts. I presume to save on storage space and prevent stale programming

Johan_Sebastian_Cock

As someone that's only ever seen low res broadcast highlights from the era, seeing the speed and technique of a guy like Jerry West in HD really lets you appreciate the game a lot more. Man's running around like its a 2K rec game

drsmith21

Worlds best plumber, right there!

tsigalko11

It's all pipes!

[deleted]

It's impressive, but I'm not sure how accurate that frame rate is

[deleted]

The NBA seems to always speed up the footage of the guys from the 60s/70s just slightly enough so it looks like the modern game

sharklavapit

Wilt stole the show for me

shigs21

Also, the size and dominance of Wilt

Onark77

I got the opposite vibe. Their technique looks like trash compared to modern games. Which isn't their fault, they built the foundations for what nba players can do today. The defense is insanely undisciplined and sloppy. Which is probably why the score ended up being so high. Don't get me wrong, I love the film and seeing what things looked like back in the day. Lots to learn and appreciate.

Asheskell

A large part of the defensive "ineptitude" results largely from how rules were enforced at the time. Physicality couldn't be initiated from either offense or defense.

Onark77

Overcommitting, being out of position, and poor foot work aren't solely about the ability to be physical. They just didn't look disciplined, like they hadn't been trained to the level that guys are at now. Which they weren't.

whowasonCRACK2

> being out of position Due to illegal defense rules, your idea of where someone should be positioned on defense was probably illegal at the time. You had to guard your man or hard double, no cheating off non shooters or help and recover on the backside.

Onark77

That makes sense for a some of what I saw. That should diminish the perception of the quality of offensive play, right? Shitty defense, whether it was induced by the rules or not, created easier opportunities to score. I can't be the only one who looked at that film and saw a noticeable lack of technical skill compared to today's game.

wembanyama_

Defense has improved massively in every era Even looking at Jordan highlights it’s crazy to see how much worse the defense was

gundam1983

Boomers complaining about defense in the modern game never analyzed games from when they grew up watching basketball. Even games from the 90's are god-awful from a defensive standpoint.

Kidd5

A clinic on how to move without the basketball. Also a side note, Elgin Baylor was a goddamn machine. He seemed to also have the ability to palm the ball which gives the player a huge advantage. Wilt in this video utilized the one hand move with the basketball a lot. Very cool I'd watch the entire game in HD if it was available.

SonOfMySibling

This is the type of footage that reminds you players back then were actually pretty skilled and weren’t just plumbers and milk men

i__did__that

That's right. They were also masons and vacuum salesmen.

Obi_Wan_Benobi

They couldn’t compete with the podcasters and influencers that dominate the league now.

KawhiLeonardsThigh

Don't forget the streamers

[deleted]

N E W M E D I A

nosta2

Really? This looks like a d2 college game to me, except Wilt I guess if you drop a NBA star center on d2 league, he might average 50

cstele

This type of footage is always great to watch. These guys have so much skill that's hard to appreciate in most of the videos we get to see.

TheRed_Knight

NBA has tons of footage from the 70's they just refuse to release

[deleted]

They’d make so much money by releasing a season on Blu-ray like every 6 months.

Texanshateme

If this stuff was on League Pass, NBA would be printing money.

APx_22

It’s all about selling the current product though

spyson

People also forget that it was also harder for those guys to get better at that time. If a player wanted to get better at shooting they would need someone to rebound for them at that time while now you got rebounding machines that do it for you. Just small things like that build a bigger picture of why things have improved, it doesn't mean the players were bad, they were just a product of their time.

BigFatModeraterFupa

Damn this is an epic video. Jerry West is a beast. These are the guys who crawled so today’s basketball can walk. Put these dudes in modern gyms with modern tech and techniques, they would be stars today. Always cool to see the history of who built the game and give respect

Johan_Sebastian_Cock

West's stop and pop game would translate pretty damn seamlessly to today. for sure

starnoneckwind

and not a lot of people take note that these guys are running around jumping on chuck taylors

glennromer

I think that’s the best way to view it. Obviously if you plopped this guy in the Lakers lineup today, he’d get wrecked. But if he had grown up the way today’s player did, I think he’d still be great. He clearly has the instincts. You can hardly blame him for not having the perfect jumper form when he had never *seen* a perfect jump shot. But someone saw Jerry West shoot and probably modeled their shot after him and made little improvements.

BigFatModeraterFupa

Yeah it’s just like our lives today. It’s so incredible how we have hot water and indoor plumbing and a/c in our homes and then you see the cabins people lived in only a few generations ago. History is so important, because we are the inheritors of all of our ancestors hard work

nothisispatrickeu

he is literally the logo

glennromer

That’s correct, thank you for sharing!

[deleted]

Come on he would be starting over LeBum right now

[deleted]

This is exactly why comparing players between eras is so stupid.

beetlebailey97

West likely wouldn’t get wrecked, but a role player of the day would. No matter the difference in training, the guy still averaged 37 a game on 57% ts in the finals the year before this. That guy is at absolute worst a decent starter.

VancouDoo

Wilt dominating without much effort

LukeNukem63

Yeah Wilt stands out the most tbh. This is old man Wilt too

VaginaIFisteryTour

Absurdly good rebounder and he can barely even move

TheRed_Knight

on like one good leg too

brahlicious

Two out of three ain't bad.

numberonebuddy

Alright [Meatloaf](https://youtu.be/HVvXWUAKtus) take it easy.

MarkBellhorn1

Lol he’s just MESSING with those dudes. Unreal

ksx25

The Wilt/West two man game must have been absurd

Careless_Expert_7076

I wouldn’t call this dominating lmao. These might as well be Javale McGee highlights. Edit: Javale actually has more impressive highlights. His dunk contest alone > wilts highlight reel

Morezingis

Wilt had more assists in his last season in the league than McGee has had in his 14 year career combined. I’ve read some nephew takes on this sub, but you might be the nephew to end all nephews.

Careless_Expert_7076

I’m talking about the highlights themselves not his stats. He’s grabbing boards and giving them to his pg here, how is that “dominating”? He’s not doing a drop step and dunking on the opposing Center like shaq.

[deleted]

did you see the playmaking from the post and the fadeaway? the way it was him by himself rebounding for the lakers against however many others and the whole team watching him snag them anyway while barely moving? anyone who knows about wilts prime playing style (led league in assists, rebounds, points, etc etc) can see it all in here javale mcgee highlights literally never look like that. he never runs the offense from the post, he never dominates an entire area solo vs x amount of people im sorry he only dunked on a fastbreak for you though

Careless_Expert_7076

Bruh this is some crazy meat riding. He hits some basic ass hook shots and grabbed a rebound over a dude 5-6 inches shorter. He was a known stat chaser too.

[deleted]

didnt hit a hook, grabbed more than one rebound, and now you're trying to down him when we were talking about the highlight and the fact you could see his game still easily effective at that age even if not prime why would you be so goofy? why would you lie about a video we can scroll up to? why actually spend time being so shit?

Careless_Expert_7076

Lol you’re just grasping at straws being pedantic here. Sure it wasn’t a hook shot, but just some weak ass put back tip ins and one *gasp* fadeaway. West looks much much more impressive here, especially given the spacing.

[deleted]

wilt was literally famous for what you see in the video the fadeaway, the post playmaking, rebounding, the block, finishing plays. and you could see how easy it still was despite him being old af no one said one was more impressive. you(goofy) said it looked like javale mcgee and was nothing crazy. i said anyone who knows of wilts game could see it here and it was still so easy. i also said javale has never done half of that. and to back up that dumb shit, *you're lying about a video we can scroll to* lol why? why bro?

domdomburg

I had no idea Jerry West had perfected the hesi pull up jimbo more than 50 years ago.

shxylo

this is why jerry and kevin connected the way in which they did. the hesi pull up jimbo brings people together.

OkInvestigator6193

It’s so annoying that the NBA has this quality footage OF 70’S GAMES at their disposal, yet almost all 90s/00s games look like they were recorded on a potato

Johan_Sebastian_Cock

The reason it's such high quality is that it's been transferred directly from film to digital, whereas everything else is recorded from the broadcast feed, which was low def to begin with. Very few games would've been filmed like this

Obi_Wan_Benobi

The NBA needs to get the lowest generation sources for every game they can and start working on AI upscaling these. lmao like that’ll ever happen. Someone will probably upscale some only for the NBA to take them off YouTube while they keep everything in a vault.

HorsNoises

There was a thread about this on r/nfl a couple days ago and people also talked about how everything from recording to processing was also very subject to user error so even a lot of the footage they got got screwed up somewhere along the way, which is why we only get chunks or things appear to be slow motion because they're missing frames.

Firefoxray

Like op said, recording in the 90s vs 70s was extremely different. They had to record it on film then replay it up to broadcast, so they always had the film backup, which can be enhanced to way higher resolutions than they could use at the time. In the 90s the cameras got advanced enough to directly broadcast live without needed to record it on tape at the same time, so the only recordings would be the master broadcasts which were compressed to shit already.

velodus

Damn, I wish all old highlights looked as great as this. Also, I know smoking is horrible, but so many old sports highlights looked really cool and theatrical because there was like a cinematic smoke cloud at the tops of these arenas from all the smoking the fans were doing, and that's what it looks like in crowd shots in this clip.

Megamango2099

Jerry kept that MF thang on him.

MrBigWaffles

Damn that jumper is silky smooth

ThatWrestlingGuy15

They don’t look like mailmen now

[deleted]

[удалено]

i__did__that

All the HVAC techs were sitting on the bench

MObaid27

Jerry West, Wilt, Baylor, Walt Fraizer, Reed, & DeBusschere; so many HoF legends in one clip!! Great find OP

Sultregasome

I kinda wish they didn't solely focus on the Lakers offense. It gave this perception that they were dominating, then like 3/4ths into the video it shows that they are tied at 99-99. So clearly they were shaking and baking on the other end of the court too. Would've loved to see that.

DrtyBongWater

I want more especially from the 70s. Would love to see some Kareem games.

Darkillumina

If you dropped one of todays guys in this game they’d go about 2 seconds before being called for a carry. All the players here are conscious and deliberate with how they dribble to avoid a carry. Wild how much it’s changed.

GlueGuy00

Rules are more strict back then unlike today

BelowAverage_Elitist

You're probably right but wasn't that first clip an uncalled travel. Jerry took a step and a half before dribbling the ball

blackredking

Interesting to see how the players didn't have much follow through on their jump shots and free throws, compared to the modern form. I wonder, how were shooting percentages from mid to long range?

Johan_Sebastian_Cock

This was 9 years before the 3 was introduced so I doubt they have those stats

blackredking

Thanks for the video!

JilJungJukk

You could ve told this was a clip from Winning Time and I would ve believed it for a while holy shit

[deleted]

Some of those jumpshots look like 3 pointers. Man the Logo is so good. Grandpa says he also had quick long hands and swore he averaged like 5 steals per game.

motorboat_mcgee

They didn't track steals and blocks until his final season when he was 35... He averaged 2.6 steals and 0.7 blocks that season

GlueGuy00

Can only imagine the STL and BLK averages in his prime

Ahambone

Lol that ref sweating harder than the players

Theycallmetheherald

Back when refs actually put in work and were decent. good times.

[deleted]

boy was hoofing it

mommadotco15

Glad the league managed to get the refs some dri fit over the years god damn

-KFBR392

A few things: 1. Wilt's FT shooting was wild, that was like a push off of the palm of the hand. It was closer to tossing a shotput than shooting a ball. 2. DeBusschere bit hard on that Jerry pump fake! 3. Wilt's on his Jokic out there with the one handed passes and fake passes. 4. Was that Smooth Criminal playing in the background?

Johan_Sebastian_Cock

>Wilt's FT shooting was wild Same channel that made the video I posted has this one on Wilt's free throws. Really interesting. Man was just too strong and couldnt take enough mustard off his shot to shoot frees effectively. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8fn1IaTMQM

-KFBR392

That was awesome, thanks for sharing that. Wilt was before my time but even as a kid I was completely enamoured by him and his almost mythical legacy, would read books about him, and look up all his stats, it's great to actually see so much game footage of his finally.

GlueGuy00

It's amazing how little effort he pushed the ball from the FT line and it still gets there. There was a clip from that channel where Wilt is shooting set shots from the halfcourt and swishing it everytime. Wilt is just too big and strong that he needs to play on a bigger sized court to compensate for it.

jgroove_LA

what will always blow my mind pre-80's ball is the shoes they were wearing...barely any soles at all...imagine some of these guys in just everyday modern basketball sneakers

[deleted]

Sheesh the 1 dribble pull-up middy holds up w todays standards

rolokone

I am a Lakers fans through and through, I can't imagine cheering for another team like I did the Lakers. But the way the franchise did Jerry West dirty makes me love the Lakers a little less

magiqd

You reach, I teach.

piemaster89

You can tell this film is ancient because the Knicks are in the finals

KatyPerrysRack

Look at all them plumbers he be killing.

apawst8

One old timer said that the scouting report on West was, "he can't go to his left. But it doesn't matter because he'll beat you anyway."

TheChurchOfDonovan

If I had a bar. I would have restored footage like this from all sports running whenever there's not big games on.It's absolutely mesmerizing. Can you imagine watching Jerry West embarrassing dudes in 8k on a 72inch tv over some nachos and a blue moon while you’re waiting for your stupid friends to get there

BreadMeatCheeseGang

Hey I see my old plumber and my old mailman out there. Neat!

ZachLaVine4MVP

Bruh todays refs would literally call some type of foul on like every play. Watching modern basketball with this type of officiating would literally be peak NBA

Thewackman

This is a shit take. Absolutely bullshit. The reffing would be worse in some other way to fans. it doesn't fucking matter. Refs always suck according to fans.

WhoopingKing

Ok this is incredible

[deleted]

Jesus, volume down!

MyDadsAPreacher

I'm probably going to get slaughtered for this but I genuinely don't see how people can watch this and still believe these dudes could hang with modern nba players.

Thewackman

I'm sorry, but what do you think snatching means?

sharklavapit

old Wilt was still legendarily awesome he'd ruin the current league. imagine him being coached by a Popovich or PJax? Could have been the GOAT if he had that team mentality

According_Gene2202

This footage is so awesome and I wish we more often got to see this high quality of footage of older players to really appreciate their game play

Abject_Champion7814

QUEST50012

Literally the apex mountain of Knicks basketball, including their most iconic moment lol.

Johan_Sebastian_Cock

lmao

VancouDoo

Yikes 😬

LukaOwnsTheSunsMay15

lmao no 3 pt line. Warriors would cook them in the modern era

Johan_Sebastian_Cock

gee wiz mister d'ya really think basketball has gotten better over the last 40 years?

shigs21

pretty sure jerry would be a splash grandfather and wilt would dominate in the paint

angel2timez

lol I’m sorry but reminds me of open gym from how these guys move and play, only difference is having 8 foot wilt

mrjowei

Dude lathered that hair with glue? Not a single hair out of place.

[deleted]

Elgin had a booty on him

MObaid27

AYOOO!!!

trixtah

For a second I thought he teleported at the 30 second mark

breakthrureality

Yo he was nasty lmaoo

Nash13101

MAN I sure am grateful that I live in an age where I can see this kind of footage in HD. What a legend.

hadbetterdaysbefore

If you ever tried to play with real old school shoes, you know the pain.

goodolvj

Gotta love how crystal clear this footage is compared to the stuff from the early to mid 2000's lol.

KalpolIntro

The frame rate on this seems off. What do y'all think?

Zooburn

Someone could compare the game clock in video to a timer today to see if there’s a significant difference

MahomesMccaffrey

Wilt got that 70s acrobatic look on him

trustabro

The footage is gorgeous. The low camera shot from the baseline on the floor is so epic. I really wish we could watch the full game with this quality. I’m really curious to see how the game was really played back in those days (and not just highlights).

d_e_l_u_x_e

There’s a reason he’s on the NBA logo, the OG ankle breaker.

devonschmidt

This channel has better footage from the old era than the NBA.

devonschmidt

Jerry West dusting the competition in an era where they call alot of dribble moves and all crossovers as palming.

BatterseaPS

I think "3-pointers ruined basketball" takes are obviously ridiculous, BUT I will admit that the court does look really cool without it, and it changes the feel of the game. It's more "open-ended" in a way, although I can't find a better word for it at the moment.

hurlcarl

I watch stuff like this and I wonder how some peoples favorite players would look with unsupportive shoes, no break away rims, strict dribbling rules, etc. Everyone wants to make milkman jokes, and I'm sure their training wasn't nearly as good, but I see some pretty athletic dudes in better shape than doncic, boogie, felton, joki, etc...

UncleMadness

I love this so much I also love that the music makes me want to "select my fighter" kinda

shxylo

jerry’s move were so precise, smooth and graceful. he just gets to where he needs to be and executes.

Avocado111

Jesus Wilt is a god damned unit!

sangbang9111

must be no ac cause that ref is sweating his balls off lmfao

PM_me_startup_jobs

Why are the refs so sweaty??

GlueGuy00

no AC

dat_waffle_boi

Whenever we see these old tapes it’s always the guys doing some crazy things. I want one where someone like Wilt or Elgin Baylor or somebody is just fucking up and doing some stupid stuff. Like air balling or something.

steronzthrow12345

In this case it’s the defense fuckin up. Flying by on slight head fakes. Not a defensive stance in sight

Sharp_Black

But *we* won . Clyde Finals MVP. Game. Blouses.

bradasskg11

Look at the tit sweat on these refs! But you won’t see that in todays game..

shigs21

Jerry's jumper is WET

[deleted]

Look at Wilt. So talented

KenyonFartin

That guy guarding Jerry the first possession is Dave Debusschere, ie the greatest defensive forward of that era, just to put into perspective how good Jerry is
