My gut reaction is not to trust Newsom, but if he can win and help dems win I really don't care.

sharpshooter42

His former campaign manager would agree with not trusting him

[deleted]

Why?

[deleted]

Oh wow, never knew about that!

DaBuddahN

I doubt he'll be able to appeal to swing voters or find the sweet spot in the culture wars. What I really do like about Newsom is that he's pushing back against Cali NIMBYs.

Ok_Pride6660

I met Gavin once. Nice guy. I shook his hand! He had a firm grip.

eurekashairloaves

Hank Hill would approve!

TheSoftestTaco

god I love this sub

spidersinterweb

That's what the poster you replied to wants Newsom to say to them!

ldn6

Same.

MizzGee

I like Gavin. Smart, thinks on his feet, has kept California rolling no matter what Trump did. Will never be Zaddy Brown, but he is the future. It is just a shame that California isn't bigger so more of us could live there.v

donttayzondaymebro

With proper zoning we could all live there.

MizzGee

I am absolutely a YIMBY, but I would rather see a bunch of us move to red states and fuck up the gerrymandering. I live in a red state, but in a blue region. However it has been getting more red every year. Honestly, tech companies should allow everyone to work remotely, and we should move to Montana, the Dakota's, Kansas, Nebraska. We should branch out in Ohio, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan. Take over the suburbs of Indianapolis and Lake and Porter Counties near Chicago (they already have a Democratic presence).

DevilsTrigonometry

We absolutely could/should take Wyoming and Montana. Absolutely stunning states, right next door to Colorado, and we'd only need a 5-digit number of migrants to swing them. Georgia should be workable too. And North Carolina. I'm less optimistic about the rest.

[deleted]

Are you all dense?

spidersinterweb

Dense housing supporters 😎 (dabs furiously)

[deleted]

So like the opposite of Newson

Crius33

He and the State AG are applying pressure on Nimbys

[deleted]

Barely. Results show little success His housing first policies have been a disaster state wide

SelfLoathinMillenial

Oh good, more California. Just what the Democrats need

[deleted]

Despite what Texas and Florida want you to think, nothing actually ever comes out of it. Everything goes there for low taxes but the actual creative forces from where things originate is and will be California.

ultradav24

Well, New York

[deleted]

Unironically agree. Best state in the union and it's not even close.

I don't know what food MA even has beyond clam chowder but the Bakersfield food scene is better than anything in New England.

PandaLover42

Lmao this is r/RareInsults worthy

Legit_Spaghetti

Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and many more of our representatives would whole-heartedly agree with you. America needs California to lead.

[deleted]

How did the state wide covid restrictions compare to other democratic states? I undersrand many cities in Cali were very restrictive, but I do not have a good handle on the whole state.

jaydub-wantout

Terrible. They had a stay-at-home order from March 2020 until **June 15, 2021**. https://www.gov.ca.gov/2021/06/11/as-california-fully-reopens-governor-newsom-announces-plans-to-lift-pandemic-executive-orders/ The state also has been happy to institute mask mandates, and they still have not lifted the emergency orders that enable unelected county health officials to implement mask mandates, which is why Alameda County and likely soon Los Angeles County will have them. The state is still "strongly recommending" masks indoors to "prevent the spread" and "to keep from spreading the virus to those with no defense" (so, basically forever). https://covid19.ca.gov/safely-reopening/#what-to-do-now And this is *after* their 'endemicity' plan they boasted about. Closely tied to all this, of course, as both cause and effect, the culture of COVID-worry is stronger there. I sure hope that the future of the Democratic Party is people like Jared Polis, not Gavin Newsom.

[deleted]

I am also a huge fan of Jarid Polis and would like to see more of his version of the democratic party

groovygrasshoppa

You sound like one of those ivermectin nutjobs.

bashar_al_assad

> The state is still "strongly recommending" masks indoors to "prevent the spread" and "to keep from spreading the virus to those with no defense" The complaint here is... what exactly? You're not required to wear a mask but it hurts your feelings when someone recommends you do? Why is "it's up to you whether or not you want to wear a mask but we do recommend it" not good enough for you?

[deleted]

NL: Compassion for LGBTQ+ people who can't change who they are, but fuck the immune compromised when it comes to this very direct and real risk to their lives.

jaydub-wantout

Relevant underrated article: A Pandemic Risk Reality Check for the Immunocompromised — Studies indicate the level of risk may not warrant such a broad, catastrophizing narrative https://www.medpagetoday.com/opinion/second-opinions/98741

jaydub-wantout

"Strong recommendations" are used by lower levels of jurisdiction to justify requirements. Do you think recommending masks forever, with even no exceptions for low transmission areas, is a good way for public health to spend its political capital, or will they get tuned out? Why aren't other states, the CDC, and European health agencies doing that? It's always possible that down the road they'll revise it again, but the fact it is the way it is now is very telling as to the state gov's attitude about how focused people should be on COVID. Edit: and as for the immune-compromised - the agency should be focused more on helping them in particular wear a fitted N95, and above all they should be getting Evusheld. Universally pushing for vague "masks" no matter what is not necessary or sustainable.

Sdrater3

Seems like you're seething over nothing tbh. But such is life, everyone seethes at California for no reason.

[deleted]

I like how this is leaving out that while Cali was in lockdown Newsom had maskless dinners/events. That'll play well.

bashar_al_assad

> That'll play well. I mean... despite conservatives wanting everybody to care about this, they forced a recall vote over it, and then Newsom got almost the same amount of votes as he did in his 2018 election, meaning the California republicans convinced basically zero independent voters with this,

jaydub-wantout

Defeating a Republican in California does not whatsoever imply electability outside California

bashar_al_assad

He didn't just defeat the Republican, he actually *gained* votes in the recall election, and was basically the same percentage-wise compared to his 2018 election, votes for Newsom in the 2021 recall election: 7,944,092 (61.88%) vote for Newsom in the 2018 gubernatorial election: 7,721,410 (61.9%) Now sure, that doesn't mean Newsom is guaranteed to become the Democratic nominee if he ever runs for President, but if you want to make the case that voters care about his covid hypocrisy, then you have to explain why independent voters in California are somehow magically different than independent voters everywhere else in the country.

MistakeNotDotDotDot

Pelosi also violated the mask requirements while getting her hair done. Her spokesperson defended her by saying that she usually gets her hair done at her place... which was also against the rules.

[deleted]

Probably one of the worst governors lol

groovygrasshoppa

Cope and seethe

Icy-Establishment272

shhh don’t tell them that, neoliberals will be angry and nobody likes their politicians /s for the idiots, most are fine competent people. gavin is the exception i find
