I'll never forget him as the antagonist in "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover". He's just the most horribly abusive asshole to his wife (Helen Mirren).
And it's a testament to his ability that I could then believe him as Dumbledore after that.
Didn't realize that was him. Great cinematography and yikes, that ending. Watched it not too long ago. Surprised I didn't know about it sooner. Definitely didn't realize that was him. His lines were so over the top and gold they way he delivered them.
It's in *Sleepy Hollow* I first met him. Still very fond of the movie though I havent revisted it in a very long while. Kinda wonder how well it has aged.
It's extremely hammy. Absolutely everyone is overacting. Still good fun, though. I especially liked the cameo of Christopher Lee as the magistrate who dispatches our luckless hero up the Hudson River Valley.
Which means I'm getting old and it reminds me of my own mortality, everything is temporary so take none of this too seriously.
That's what it means to me.
One of my favourite memories of my dad, who died six months ago, was his enjoyment of the final shootout. He was agog at the skill of the technical direction. If anyone reading this was involved with the making of that film, thank you.
That ending is one of my favorites. I’m not a movie fan so I’ve never watched the entire movie but I’ll put that on, turn the volume up, and just enjoy the action.
Of course it doesn't define his career as you mentioned, and I don't think anybody said that
There's a time and place for legitimate discussions like that, but I think now is more of a time to celebrate his work rather than diving deep into how he had the tough task of following in someone else's footsteps, which he did a decent job of anyways, I'd say
Richard Harris worked for the mystical, “kind wizard” Dumbledore of the earlier books/movies. But Gambon works for the manipulative, rather cold-hearted, Machiavellian Dumbledore that was revealed in the later books/movies.
Sorry, he wasn't. Book Dumbledore had a mystical/whimsical air that was completely missing from Gambon's performance. Not to mention odd acting choices like the famous "Dumbledore said calmly" meme. Dude didn't read the books and it showed.
You have literally zero taste. An actor’s vocation and responsibility is to interpret the text given. Thats what he did with the scripts he was given and the character. He made acting choices and he did an exquisite job at that with this character. The man was a great artist. I couldn’t care less about your fanboy opinion about a fictional character in a series of children’s books. I remember Harris’es performances. He did a really good job and Gambon simply outclassed his performances by a mile. Gambon was an exceedingly gifted actor though. He brought much more nuance, pathos and somehow charisma to a role clearly not designed to incorporate a charismatic performance. Yet still there he was, being charismatic. He brought the character to life in a very vivid way.
He was Dumbledor.
RIP.
Edit: looking at images of Harris as Dumbledor, I’m not giving Harris’ performance enough praise. He did a brilliant job as Dumbledore.
Relax buddy, notice how nowhere in my comment I said he was a bad actor? He acted very well, he just didn't act like the character of Dumbledore. It's literally a meme how different he was.
Relax? How about you relax, grow up and get a life? Who do you think you are to insult this man’s memory by disparaging his performances? He wasn’t the character. What a joke! You think you know better than the man who directed him and the author of the character. Youre getting worked up and responding about things you have no idea about and people don’t want to hear about it. Read the room.
I totally agree. He even mentioned somewhere that he didn't read the books because he didn't want it to inform on his performance but would rather have the scripts do that.
If you have never seen the TV series "Longitude" starring Michael Gambon, make the effort to find it and view it. Seriously, some of the best television ever.
The Singing Detective was one of the best TV shows ever. The soundtrack is excellent as well.
> "The human mind has to ask 'who did it?' It always has to be somebody, doesn't it? There's no room for nobody."
[Rounding that final corner in the sky](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_test_track#/media/File:TG_Test_Track.PNG).
(Corner in the top-right was named after him after he nearly flipped a reasonably-priced car at that spot.)
He took a supporting role in a literary adaptation of *Wives and Daughters*, and made Squire Hambley the most hilarious, heartbreaking rendition of an English country gentleman that I've ever seen.
Godspeed, good sir.
I think actors love a good villainous role. Getting the audience to absolutely hate them means they've succeeded as an actor. Plus, it's often enormous fun.
Will certainly miss this man. What a legendary career this man's had. Though he might not have been the original, I'll always remember his time as Dumbledore, like I'm sure many others will. More recently, he was very fun to hear in Elder Scrolls Online as the voice of the Prophet. Sometimes it's hard to believe that the HP films are 20+ years old by now but then you look at the cast and how much its shrunk, and it really hits you.
Shame it feels like this news has been overshadowed by other topics today for some reason.
Technically, it's just a title for *living* ppl. Regardless, the title's not what we're here to respect.
I could listen to the man's voice for hours on end. Really liked his smallish turns in The Good Shepherd and The Insider.
I knew he played Dumbledore but I didn't realize he was also the old cambial/survivalist in The Book of Eli until I read through his filmography! Just an amazing actor.
:S just a few hours ago I saw the harry potter fart clip and I was wondering that the old dumbledore guy is dead and that's why they got the other guy to play dumbledore. He wasn't dead apparently. RIP
I know he gets some flak for his portrayal of Dumbledore but he was still [fantastic](https://youtu.be/zYCx_7J1MDk?si=BWZLRQWc4gw4lR0E). Rest in peace Dumbledore.
Always loved to see Micheal Gambon in a film. A solid actor. Always played his part expertly. Ahhh, he is on my tv screen now. ’The King’s Speech’.
Sorry to see that he has left us. He is great company. Makes us laugh and think and marvel.
Rest In Peace
I really thought his was the best Dumbledore. Richard Harris really did come off as a fragile old man, but Gambon breathed life into the role of Dumbledore, he truly was a Dumbledore with style.
Fortitude was a great show and he played a very good role in it. He and Richard Dormer's character reminded me of my own relationship with my father. RIP Sir Michael.

"Let's just make shit up. It'll be fun," There are many, but he was truly great.
This is my favorite British gangster film
This was the first sentence i thought of when i read the title!!
My love of that movie is almost a family joke. RIP Gambon
I highly suggest The Cook The Theif His Wife & her Lover!!! Seriously one of the best Gambon roles ever!!
Layer Cake is one of the best films with worst titles ever. Shawshank Redemption is tied with it.
I know he's known by most for Dumbledore but I will always remember him for [Gambon Corner](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W7pLkFkVjg).
Was looking for this to make sure I wasn’t the only one, ty. RIP
“…and he’s off the racing line coming ‘round Gambon…”.
Gotta drag out that Gambon. "Into the Gamboooooooooonnnnnnn AND ACROSS THE LINE"
“And that my friends is so and so’s lap in the Reasonably Priced Car”
beat me to it.
I loved him as Mr. Bean in Fantastic Mr Fox, too.
I honestly didn't know he was Dumbledore, I just knew him from top gear also.
"I don't know...I don't like it"
The singing detective was fabulous
And... across the line.
That lap was legendary indeed.
Gabon corner!
WOW, this brought back so many memories. Oh man, nostalgia trip incoming!!!! Thanks !!
I'll never forget him as the antagonist in "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover". He's just the most horribly abusive asshole to his wife (Helen Mirren). And it's a testament to his ability that I could then believe him as Dumbledore after that.
I mean I’d say that the two roles are pretty similar if you know about dumbledore
I don't get it
Good reference! He was a fantastic actor, with the best voice. Damn.
You are HUMILIATED in front of the lady...
I didn't even recognise him in that film. I kept checking the credits thinking where the hell Michael Gambon was. He is fantastic!
"Try the cock, Albert. It's a delicacy."
Didn't realize that was him. Great cinematography and yikes, that ending. Watched it not too long ago. Surprised I didn't know about it sooner. Definitely didn't realize that was him. His lines were so over the top and gold they way he delivered them.
“To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.” Condolences to his family and loved ones.
That was from the first book and movie. Gambon didn't say that line, that was Richard Harris.
I don’t think that line was in the movie, only the book.
You mean Balenciaga
"Don't pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and above all, those who live without love." I always hear it in his voice.
So good in The Singing Detective
I’d forgotten all about this. I remember as a kid thinking it was pretty scary
It's in *Sleepy Hollow* I first met him. Still very fond of the movie though I havent revisted it in a very long while. Kinda wonder how well it has aged.
I watched it last month, still really enjoyed it
It's extremely hammy. Absolutely everyone is overacting. Still good fun, though. I especially liked the cameo of Christopher Lee as the magistrate who dispatches our luckless hero up the Hudson River Valley.
Holding my wand to the sky today.

Man, get your head examined.
I am not the one holding a wand to the sky lmao
And yet you're still the one that looks like a loon.
I agree.
Damn, losing all the great ones I grew up watching.
Which means….? Think about it. (Me too)
Which means I'm getting old and it reminds me of my own mortality, everything is temporary so take none of this too seriously. That's what it means to me.
That’s exactly what I’ve been getting lately. I’m seeing all the famous people are dying or dead. As a result, I just updated my will! Ha ha ha!
Really enjoyed his role as Robin William's military brother in Toys (1992).
The movie that predicted drones. And had LL Cool J dressed up as a couch.
Are you disrespecting my duplication investigation!?
[удалено]
Not the big UAV Global Hawk drones. The little drones, the DJI Mavics they are using to drop grenades on Russians.
I think he played his uncle.
He was excellent as the Villain in Open Range with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall
I had no idea he was in this.
It’s an outstanding film
One of my favourite memories of my dad, who died six months ago, was his enjoyment of the final shootout. He was agog at the skill of the technical direction. If anyone reading this was involved with the making of that film, thank you.

this is like the third time dumbledore has died.
He died in book 6, he died after movie 2, he died in movie 6, and he died after movie 8.
He was great as Dumbledore, may he rest in peace.
“Easy when you know how”

Valid point of view, but how is this relevant on a post commemorating an actor that played a big part in a lot of people's childhood and adolescence?
Is relevant in the sense that that is def not his best work. And it is sad if that is the only work nephews relate him to.
Of course it doesn't define his career as you mentioned, and I don't think anybody said that There's a time and place for legitimate discussions like that, but I think now is more of a time to celebrate his work rather than diving deep into how he had the tough task of following in someone else's footsteps, which he did a decent job of anyways, I'd say
I didn't say he was awful as Dumbledore. My words were exactly that Harris was better, simple as that
And I never said you did. There's just a proper time and place for these things, not when people are grieving
Richard Harris worked for the mystical, “kind wizard” Dumbledore of the earlier books/movies. But Gambon works for the manipulative, rather cold-hearted, Machiavellian Dumbledore that was revealed in the later books/movies.
Time and place dude.
Sorry, he wasn't. Book Dumbledore had a mystical/whimsical air that was completely missing from Gambon's performance. Not to mention odd acting choices like the famous "Dumbledore said calmly" meme. Dude didn't read the books and it showed.
I prefer his portrayal over the mystical/whimsical. It's fair game to stray some from the books and I think he nailed it.
And yet he was still great as Dumbledore; how about that?

Oh man, I'll be having a Harry Potter marathon this weekend in his memory.
already started mine. Busted out my elder wand and that’s digging beside me lol. Such a sad day
You have to start with Prisoner, though.
Rest in peace, Professor. To the well organized mind, death is but the next great adventure. /*
Singing Detective was my first exposure. Great stuff.

Albert Spica - one of cinema’s greatest villains
I think he was stellar in Quartet! He will be missed.
He took a supporting role in a literary adaptation of *Wives and Daughters*, and made Squire Hambley the most hilarious, heartbreaking rendition of an English country gentleman that I've ever seen. Godspeed, good sir.
RIP to my favorite gangster from Layer Cake, and my second favorite Dumbledore.
I loved him as the voice of Bean in Fantastic Mr. Fox
> Michael Gambon, star of Harry Potter and The Singing Detective I don't know that HP film...
I saw an article that said "Harry Potter and Gosford Park Actor". I was like, HP and the what?
Lets not forget the Prophet in Elder Scrolls Online. Going to have to watch Sleepy Hollow tonight.
He played the Prophet?! I hadn't noticed at all, but now that I think about it I can't unhear it.
Yep! That voice is so distinct.
I wonder if anyone has questioned Snape.
I will never forget him, and his participation in the og top gear
Varen Aquilarios you will be missed.
Rest in peace. You were a great Dumbledore!
Yup time to binge harry potter again
I really enjoy one of his earliest films - The Beast Must Die
He was so good in Open Range. Such an evil character.
I think actors love a good villainous role. Getting the audience to absolutely hate them means they've succeeded as an actor. Plus, it's often enormous fun.
No one’s gonna mention Clean Slate? Surely a role he looked upon with pride
Will certainly miss this man. What a legendary career this man's had. Though he might not have been the original, I'll always remember his time as Dumbledore, like I'm sure many others will. Gosford Park was my go to.
His Inspector Maigret was superb. I have heard good things about Rowan Atkinson's portrayal, but Gambon made the role his own.
I was watching Layer Cake when I read the news. Spooky.
Not expecto disappointo 😞
Dicks out for Dumbledore.
Sir Michael John Gambon...put some respect on his name!
Technically, it's just a title for *living* ppl. Regardless, the title's not what we're here to respect. I could listen to the man's voice for hours on end. Really liked his smallish turns in The Good Shepherd and The Insider.
The title stays, there's entire crypts full of dead knights, especially since his isn't hereditary and belonged only to him
Not my favorite Dumbledore, but he was undoubtedly an amazing actor, and he will be sorely missed.
Am I an asshole for thinking he already died a long time ago? Condolences:(
That was the original Dumbledore, Richard Harris.
Great actor, terrible Dumbledore. Bring on the downvotes. I'm ready.
The curse of playing Dumbledore strikes again, Jude Law pulling on his collar
Part of playing a character who’s over 100 years old
In a movie series that finished 15 years ago.
\*12 years ago. Movie series ended July 2011.
Tough crowd
I knew he played Dumbledore but I didn't realize he was also the old cambial/survivalist in The Book of Eli until I read through his filmography! Just an amazing actor.
Great run as the Storyteller as well
Great actor! Sad to see he has passed. RIP.
:S just a few hours ago I saw the harry potter fart clip and I was wondering that the old dumbledore guy is dead and that's why they got the other guy to play dumbledore. He wasn't dead apparently. RIP

A magnificent actor. Seems to have been highly quotable too, I hadn’t known about that side of his talent.
Sad day. He was a great stage actor and tremendously funny
First David McCallum, now Micheal Gambon, who’s going to be the third old actor from the British Isles to pass? Or have I missed someone?
The legend that got a corner on the old top gear test track named after him for going around it on two wheels...
82 ain't as old as it used to be...
Fortitude was a great show and he played a very good role in it. He and Richard Dormer's character reminded me of my own relationship with my father. RIP Sir Michael.
Phillip Marlowe in Pennies from Heaven. A true tour de force.
