I get to do that Reddit thing were I say “I don’t have any money to give you but all I can say is the is the most underrated comment on my side of internet in the last hour.” Anyway. This is that.
No, they won't sting jellyfish of their own species.
They use chemoreceptors in their nematocytes (stinging cells), to let them know what's prey, and what's not. They may sting another species of jellyfish, though.
I don't know what would happen if one of them were to get stung, or injected, with its own venom, but now I'm curious.
The jellyfish as a whole does not, the individual "organs" that sting do. Think of it like a chemical pressure plate. Something's aren't the right chemicals to get stung, some are. The jellyfish doesn't decide, the trap just springs.
For the people asking - Jellyfish is a common delicacy in various Asian countries. Pickled Jellyfish is a famous delicacy in China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam.
You can start here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jellyfish_bloom
Basically rising ocean temperatures combined with a constant, mass dumping of waste from human activity causes a rapid spike in algae. Algae eventually dies and the microbes that feed on it hoover up all of oxygen faster than it can be replaced. This process occurs pretty rapidly and creates massive dead zones where most sea life cannot survive. Jellyfish have no blood and no brain and do not have the same requirements for oxygen and can feed on the existing microbes without any competition. As the population of jellies blooms, they easily consume any eggs or fry that may have survived the deoxygenization. At that point, the only thing left is jellyfish.
Thank you kindly!
I’ve worked in, under, and on, the water for 2/3rds of my life.
On a purely subjective and qualitive level I can say I had noticed more jelly fish in recent years than past.
Nice to read a bit about it! Thanks again!
Speak for yourself buddy! Got stung by a Portuguese man o war when I was a kid all across my inner thigh.
Nearly paralysed me in the water, nearly drowned making it to shore, laid there in immense pain until people found me. Can’t remember much more.
Very unpleasant experience. Scarred my leg for about a year.
Damn. Hell of a story. Fun fact, man o’ war isn’t a jellyfish, but many zooids (of up to seven varieties) that form a colony making up the structure we call a man o’ war.
Edit: grammar
On a less depressing unimportant note, it does always fascinate me how seemingly absent of anything jellies are. Jellies, worms…the idea they are even alive al all with so little senses or consciousness to their being is so mesmerizing the older I’ve got. I’m almost 30 and the more I think about the world the more I think just how weird this whole existence is
Here you go
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jellyfish_bloom
I know, I know, Wikipedia blah blah. But, it makes a good jumping off point for further reading.
Thank you!
And Wikipedia is great! We shouldn’t trust any singular source ever anyway.
I can apply my critical skills to a wiki article as well as anything else :)
Another fun jelly fact: there are immortal jellies that can just make themselves younger, so there could technically be one living in the sea that’s been around since dinosaurs
https://www.sciencefocus.com/nature/immortal-jellyfish
Yeah we are losing all the noble ocean life and instead being left with these brainless bags of jelly- it's almost like the ocean is mirroring global human consciousness
It’s pretty much just a texture with no real taste by itself. It’s crunchy kind of like some cartiledge. The dishes themselves are good thanks to the flavouring of everything other than the actual jellyfish
fun thing is that if you drench them in ranch they will taste like ranch. It is basically flavorless cartilage, will taste like whatever you drench it in.
Why is this the description for so may things considered a delicacy. Same with shark fin soup, if it has no flavor except what you add to it then what's the point just add those flavors to something that's actually good
I love jelly fish.
I've never cooked it from scratch but i think the Chinese way they slice them thin like calamari ring width but they end up looking like noodles since they can be quite big. Normally they just need to boil it and mix in sesame oil and chili oil and there delicious.
Tastes a little bit like calamari but crunchier. Way crunchier. Sounds strange for something not deep fried.
Edit: found recipe with a picture, I had no idea it takes 3 hours to prepare (though the time could be chilling time since they're served cold normally!) https://www.food.com/amp/recipe/sesame-jellyfish-with-chili-sauce-330492
He puts his foot in/very-close several times, so I assume they're either not the stinging kind or he's been stung so many times he doesn't notice any more.
If anyone is wondering about the absolute banger.
It's, เพลงชัดเจนแน่นอน - เบส ขวางหวัน.

Edit: I have no fucking clue why, but the links keep saying the video is not available. It definitely is still available though. Just search เพลงชัดเจนแน่นอน - เบส ขวางหวัน. And pick the 17 million view video that has 16 in the thumbnail.
We Asians eat them. They're a delicacy. They're mostly water though so they don't have much taste. But cut up and add some sesame oil and chili sauce they make a surprisingly crunchy appetizers with a decent kick to them.
NP. I just peeked at Wikipedia and there is some info
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jellyfish_as_food
The second picture is what I ate every Sunday at family dim sum for years.
Just watched [this](https://youtu.be/y2BYatmFJaI?si=I-KwFh2b4AMSIi-H) video on jellyfish reproduction. No worry of overfishing there... especially grabbing one at a time with a rake..
HEY ALL YOU PEOPLE
HEY ALL YOU PEOPLE
HEY ALL YOU PEOPLE WONT YOU LISTEN TO MEEEEE!
I JUST HAD A SANDWICH
NO ORDINARY SANDWICH
A SANDWICH MADE WITH JELLYFISH JELLYYYYYY!
You'd figure the guy would wear something on his feet.
They must not be that bad sting wise. But I'm curious how they're safely consumed. Like, are they somehow cleansed of whatever toxins or agents cause the stinging?
Maybe once they're dead and stop producing it they just need to be rinsed off?
Wow the world is a fascinating place.
Ok I have follow-up questions:
Is this a rare event that he’s filling that thing to the absolute brim?
How many boats? I see at least one other
Are his feet not being stung at the edge there?
How is this sold
I didn't even notice the hell pit until he chucked the first in. When the floor started moving, I thought I was having a stroke until I noticed the floor was jellypit.
If you’re wondering why theyre fishing for jellies it’s likely due to fertilizer. But as Someone mentioned in another sub where this was posted that they’ve had jellyfish sashimi and the texture is cartilage like.
We need more of this. Because of overfishing and destroying populations of other species, jellies have really proliferated at an uncontrolled pace and are now posing a new threat to our existing fish stocks.
I'd say the fact that he is balanced over a pit of hell while fishing for more demons is the impressive part
I'd have to agree

What a massive bellend
I get to do that Reddit thing were I say “I don’t have any money to give you but all I can say is the is the most underrated comment on my side of internet in the last hour.” Anyway. This is that.
No this is Patrick
Sir this is a Wendy's
My -foot-diameter is around 7.5 cm, measured behind the toes.
Damn, that dude is both a great tennis player and world record jellyfish holder?? Lots of hats for sure.
Just remember the jellyfish are more afraid you than you are of them
Yeah, that's why they'll sting the fuck outta you.
Jellyfish have no brains
I feel like one wrong step, and he's dead...
Look closely, his foot is in there a few times. Balls of steel or just high tolerance for the sting?
Maybe he pissed on his legs beforehand.
If it was me I'd be so terrified that I would be pissing down my leg the entire time.
Many species of jellyfish are not harmful to humans
Not all jellyfish sting or hurt you if you make contact actually many of them don't. I don't this is a type that causes pain.
I was thinking the same, used to throw cannonball jellyfish at my friends who didn’t know better. For some reason though these look like they sting.
That’s hilarious. Did they call you a bastard when you did it? Hmmmm?
No but I used to yell “fire in the hole!”
His resistance to their venom is fed by pure hatred towards these abominations.
Holy fuck, I thought it was the floor decoration at a quick glance
Interesting screen name you went with, uncle n word
While balancing over those stinging fucks without any damn footwear whatsoever
Anybody know why they are even collecting them? What the hell are they going to do with them?
Jam🤷🏻♂️
No, JELLY. These are not jamfish!
Jellyfish are edible!
Everything is edible if you're asian enough
The real question here: Are all those Jellies stinging each other inside that boat? Or are they immune to each other’s tentacles?
No, they won't sting jellyfish of their own species. They use chemoreceptors in their nematocytes (stinging cells), to let them know what's prey, and what's not. They may sting another species of jellyfish, though. I don't know what would happen if one of them were to get stung, or injected, with its own venom, but now I'm curious.
Do they have a cns to react to stings? If not, maybe that's the reason??
The jellyfish as a whole does not, the individual "organs" that sting do. Think of it like a chemical pressure plate. Something's aren't the right chemicals to get stung, some are. The jellyfish doesn't decide, the trap just springs.
Not to mention, let's build a boat and then fill it with water while out in the ocean amongst a sea of demons.
At least put on some shoes!
For the people asking - Jellyfish is a common delicacy in various Asian countries. Pickled Jellyfish is a famous delicacy in China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam.
Do they have the populations for this or is it gonna be another whales and japan situation?
Great news, jellyfish populations are skyrocketing globally!! Terrible news, it's a sign that the oceans are dying!!
Please teach me a little more accomplishedrush? A little reference or something I could google?

Definitely more jellyfish. I got one too the face last summer, I think I got stung like 11 times. Haha they don't hurt too bad though
Speak for yourself buddy! Got stung by a Portuguese man o war when I was a kid all across my inner thigh. Yooooo I mean the little white jellies in my area. That sounds awful. I would hate to get stung by one that actually had strong venom(?)
On a less depressing unimportant note, it does always fascinate me how seemingly absent of anything jellies are. Jellies, worms…the idea they are even alive al all with so little senses or consciousness to their being is so mesmerizing the older I’ve got. Wait till you hear about plants
How strange it is to be anything at all...
So what you’re saying is, humans better dig the taste of jellyfish?
This is terrifying.
It sounds like they are the solution
Here you go https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jellyfish_bloom I know, I know, Wikipedia blah blah. But, it makes a good jumping off point for further reading.
Thank you! And Wikipedia is great! We shouldn’t trust any singular source ever anyway. I can apply my critical skills to a wiki article as well as anything else :)
Oooh! I *like* you! Now if only we can get that message out to the other section of the population…
Exactly. Wikipedia cites source much better than most internet goons in a political debate that’s for sure
Another fun jelly fact: there are immortal jellies that can just make themselves younger, so there could technically be one living in the sea that’s been around since dinosaurs https://www.sciencefocus.com/nature/immortal-jellyfish
Yeah we are losing all the noble ocean life and instead being left with these brainless bags of jelly- it's almost like the ocean is mirroring global human consciousness
it's an endemic species, just a handful of them are endangered. they like warm waters so they're not disappearing soon :)
That's cool
Have you ever tried it? Is it any good?
It's pretty good, it taste a bit like a salty jelly but very chewy.
Thank you for responding
It’s pretty much just a texture with no real taste by itself. It’s crunchy kind of like some cartiledge. The dishes themselves are good thanks to the flavouring of everything other than the actual jellyfish
Do they come in ranch? How about nacho cheese?
fun thing is that if you drench them in ranch they will taste like ranch. It is basically flavorless cartilage, will taste like whatever you drench it in.

It tastes like what's put on it. Texture is a bit like rubber bands that snap when you chew it. Not unpleasant at all.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my life - they’ll eat *anything* in Southeast Asia
i didnt even notice the floor was jellyfish until he plopped it on top of the rest...
Same. They looked like stones and I thought the video freaked out when it wobbled.
Ahhhh. I was trying to figure out why he had a cobblestone floor for his boat
I didn't even question that the floor was cobblestones. I guess I just don't know enough about boats to have thought it odd.
lol same
Same. I thought it was cobble stone and he was just on a pier of some sort.
What are they for…?
To go with the peanut butter fish.
Take my upvote and leave damnit
Really, well played
Get out.
Following for when this is the top comment.
Goddammit. I snorted. You get the upvote.
Jelly of course
They're delicious in a light sesame sauce.
I want to know too, all I can think of is sting antidote.
They let them dry then process them for human consumption in some Asian countries.
That makes sense not sure I'd like to try it though
Do it and report back.
Dew it
I wanna eat them as is like a sea turtle
So you fall of that narrow plank you’re dead right? Or are they not stinging jellies?
He puts his foot in/very-close several times, so I assume they're either not the stinging kind or he's been stung so many times he doesn't notice any more.
Yeah I did notice that, so yeah I’m with you that the jellies either aren’t that bad or this guy is just used to it.
What are you doing today Patrick? > barefoot jellyfishing
Number 15, Burger King foot jellyfish. The last thing you’d want in your Burger King jellyfish is someone’s foot fungus…
[удалено]
Sweet, thanks for the info!

The absolute worst boat to capsize on
they look a lot heavier than I would have assumed
They’re big, mostly water, and water is heavy. Probably 20 pounds a piece.
They look like they feel like a bag of sand
Are you 40 years old?
Sounds like you’re putting the jellyfish on a pedestal
Jelly fishing jelly fishing jelly fishing

Cool, but I've never heard of fishing for jellyfish. What are they used for? Not eating, I'm assuming.
According to Google eating is exactly what is done with them.
That's crazy! I'm gonna have to look into this. "Is this jello, Mom?" "Ummm yes, honey."
Actually it is for eating! Lots of Asian countries have jellyfish dishes and it can be prepared in many ways.
Have you not seen SpongeBob?
Who? Kidding.
I have no idea I hope someone chimes in soon on what they're used for
We Asians eat them. They're a delicacy. They're mostly water though so they don't have much taste. But cut up and add some sesame oil and chili sauce they make a surprisingly crunchy appetizers with a decent kick to them.
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing.
NP. I just peeked at Wikipedia and there is some info https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jellyfish_as_food The second picture is what I ate every Sunday at family dim sum for years.

That was interesting, thanks for sharing
Honestly it would be good to reduce the population, but very hard to do.
I always order jelly fish in sesame oil at dim sum. Very tasty with a unique crunch.
That Che picture is EVERYWHERE!
Who eats jellyfish? It’s like eating placentas
People eat placentas…
He does it for the jelly
HEY ALL YOU PEOPLE HEY ALL YOU PEOPLE HEY ALL YOU PEOPLE WONT YOU LISTEN TO MEEEEE! I JUST HAD A SANDWICH NO ORDINARY SANDWICH A SANDWICH MADE WITH JELLYFISH JELLYYYYYY!
Beyonce told me I wasn't ready for the jelly though!
Great now I can’t stop thinking about this guy falling into the pit
Literally have seen this video 3 times a day for weeks
Why has that boat not sunk?
Prevagen.
I would rather work over molten iron
They need to make a new game called "Floor is Jellyfish".
Amazing!
This is a repeat, I commented on it yesterday
I don't know how he avoids getting stung.
he'd better be careful to not slip in there :D
I was not ready for this jelly.
My blood pressure is spiking from watching this.
Why does he want them?
You'd figure the guy would wear something on his feet. They must not be that bad sting wise. But I'm curious how they're safely consumed. Like, are they somehow cleansed of whatever toxins or agents cause the stinging? Maybe once they're dead and stop producing it they just need to be rinsed off? Wow the world is a fascinating place.
Putting SpongeBob and Patrick to shame
One step and its all over haha
Sponge Bob!!
…..i thought that was just the deck or something
I guess that jelly really is that good
One small misstep and there is no amount of piss in the world to quell the aftermath.
SpongeBob and Patrick would be proud
On top of him slipping what would happen if the boat sank :-/
The pain of losing your balance and falling into the holding area.
Never heard Malaysian country music before.
"We're going to need a bigger ~~boat~~ jar of peanut butter"
Most of these third-world tacticts are out of necessity, but they're no reason to make the walkway so narrow.
With a name like Smuckers, it has to be good
I kid you not, I thought that he was standing on solid ground until the water ripple with the jellyfish
Why are they catching jellyfish 🪼? Also can you imagine how painful this would be to fall into? Yikes.
Ok I have follow-up questions: Is this a rare event that he’s filling that thing to the absolute brim? How many boats? I see at least one other Are his feet not being stung at the edge there? How is this sold
But why? Are they invasive or somthing? I understand a cull if they shouldn't be there but it's not like we can eat jellyfish or anything.
Hate for him to slip and fall 😳
His feet
I’ve literally only seen people fish for jellyfish using butterfly nets.
This isn't even fishing, this is *catching*. Bro just out here like he's raking leaves 😆
Jelly-lelly lelly-jelly jelly-lelly lelly-jelly! It's the Jellyfishing Song! \[clap\] Jelly-lelly lelly-jelly jelly-lelly lelly-jelly! Everyone sing along!
That's a very uncomfortable bath
Are the Jellyfish in the boat alive or dead? They don't appear to be moving
My first thought was, wow that blended in with the floor of that boat very well. Then I realized the floor was just Jellys
Just casually raking jellyfish barefoot
What do they do with those jellies ?
Why aren’t they moving? Do they get killed instantly with the spikey tool?
Someone’s going to have to do a lot of peeing if he falls in with them
Raft. He's playing Raft.
Little known fact: Grape, Apple, Strawberry & Petroleum Jelly are all made by local Jellyfish 🪼🙂
![gif](giphy|UvOcKPHrkKSLm) SpongeBob does it better
Why would he be harvesting jellyfish?
whats the use of jellyfish tho do they eat it?
So what you are saying is.. take SpongeBob's net away and give him a metal rake?
I didn't even notice the hell pit until he chucked the first in. When the floor started moving, I thought I was having a stroke until I noticed the floor was jellypit.
There is no more room for more jellyfish!! …another jellyfish is thrown in the boat
His brother works the peanut butter fish boat
Usually Sandles but not this guy.
My red flag is thinking I could jump in that boat pool and bounce on them like in finding nemo
So is the boat electric?
I assume he has a cyanide tooth for if he slips and falls?
If you’re wondering why theyre fishing for jellies it’s likely due to fertilizer. But as Someone mentioned in another sub where this was posted that they’ve had jellyfish sashimi and the texture is cartilage like.
One misstep and hes dying the zippyzap death of ouch
And I thought the floor was stone 💀
Prob makes less than $1 an hour
What do you do with jellyfish?
U couldn’t pay me enough to subject myself to being this close to death, as a regular part of my job
Glad to see somebody get some use out of these damn ocean boogers.
What r they gonna do with all that jelly?
That looks like such a fun job! Like a constant game with immediate painful consequence! I’d definitely give it a shot for shits and giggles!
What do they do with them
Spongebob would be proud
We need more of this. Because of overfishing and destroying populations of other species, jellies have really proliferated at an uncontrolled pace and are now posing a new threat to our existing fish stocks.
You could say he's just....raking in the money.
