Dudes at work were talkin bout- "man, can you imagine graduating college at 30? Not even worth it then cause your lifes basically over already."
These were interns who just turned 21/22.
The great thing about time is it never stops so Im more than likely going to still be here when they turn 30...and I am going to shiiiiiiiiit all over them on that day.
Buy'em a walker and a pack of depends, talk to them in a higher volume- "happy birthday grandpa, tell me what insta was like."
they said themselves they are. Theres over a dozen people here with 30+ years. Its a pretty good union gig. Despite what the news says there are still jobs you can start, make good money, and retire from.
Supposedly. But if these 20 year olds wont be here in a decade then they either hit the lottery, died, or popped on a drug test.
theres 3 sets of father/son employees just within my dept. We do pretty good here.
I’m sometimes skeptical of that “fact” if you apply it across all industries. Here is what chatGPT said about it when I asked about how pensions factor in, and it feels about as nuanced as I thought:
“You've touched on an important and often overlooked aspect of the job-switching versus long-term employment debate—the value of benefits like pensions. The advice to switch jobs frequently is primarily based on the potential for salary increases and career progression that might not be available in a single company. However, this advice doesn't always take into account the long-term benefits like pensions, which can significantly impact lifetime earnings and retirement security.
### Considering Pensions in the Job-Switching Equation
**1. Pension Benefits:**
Pensions, especially defined benefit plans where the employer guarantees a specific payout at retirement based on salary and years of service, can be extremely valuable. They provide a stable income in retirement without the risks associated with personal investments in the stock market.
**2. Job Switching and Retirement Savings:**
In contrast, job switchers often rely on defined contribution plans like 401(k)s or other personal investments. These plans can offer higher returns potentially but also come with greater risk and require active management by the employee. The responsibility for ensuring enough retirement savings rests entirely with the individual.
**3. The Tipping Point:**
The tipping point you mentioned would vary based on several factors:
- **The generosity of the pension plan:** More generous plans can indeed tip the scales in favor of staying long-term in a job.
- **Investment returns in personal savings accounts:** Higher returns can make frequent job switching more attractive.
- **The average salary increase achieved by switching jobs:** Higher salary increases can offset the lack of a pension.
- **Life expectancy:** Longer life expectancies can make pensions more valuable, as the guaranteed income continues for life.
### Calculating the Best Option
To determine the best financial strategy, one would ideally calculate the total expected lifetime earnings from staying at a job with a pension versus the potential earnings from switching jobs regularly. This calculation should include potential salary increases, the value of any benefits lost or gained, and projected returns on personal retirement savings.
### Job Satisfaction and Other Factors
It's also important to consider non-financial factors. Job satisfaction, career development opportunities, work-life balance, and personal values regarding stability or change should also play into this decision.
In conclusion, while frequent job switching might increase short-term income for some, staying in a position with a strong pension plan can be more beneficial financially in the long run, especially if one lives a long time after retirement. Each individual's circumstances and goals will dictate the best choice, and often, consulting with a financial advisor can help in making a well-informed decision.”
Agreed and disagreed. In terms of time left on earth, at 30-40 you still got time. But in terms of your actual ability, by 30-40 what you can physically do has already usually begun to decline
You also have to consider the speed technology and medicine are moving today, in 40 years when these 30 year olds will be in there 70’s who knows what will be available. Think of today’s technology compared to the 80’s and tech is moving much faster now than it was in the 80’s especially with AI becoming a thing.
Your quality of life may be vastly different in those last 20-30 years. And 80 is not avg life expectancy of an American man. 37 is closer to middle life
is there just some confusion about what middle aged means here or something ?
38x2 is 76. the average life expectancy is 74-76.
you're decidedly middle aged my man. That's why they call it a "mid life crisis"
Yup, it’s funny too cause I remember being a kid and all the parents speaking of/turning 40, I always felt it was old. Now that I’m nearing it, I don’t feel old at all, just when I wake up in the morning haha. Cheers to you, thanks for pointing out I am in fact middle aged haha
He's not 35, he's a few tears older, but that doesn't matter. Most people live 70-75 years. That would make him middle aged.
35 is in fact middle aged. I'm sorry. I don't like it either.
It’s generally not thought of as middle age.. even though technically it is middle for many people. 70 is quite young age to die these days though, most make it past that.
Mid 40s is is usually considered middle aged
If that's middle-aged men, prepare to get your ass kicked. Middle-aged men is just code for perfectly capable dudes who have been doing shit like this for longer than you have. Lol.
It is a subjective term. Some people think 1-30 is young. 31-60 is middle aged. 61 and up is old. 'Middle' can be thought of a range of ages in the middle of two other age ranges.
Since at least 1308.
EDIT: the first line of Dante’s Inferno is “midway through life’s journey” which at the time was thought to be around 35 years old.

Edit just to add from Wikipedia: “Middle age, or middle adulthood, is the age range of the years halfway between childhood and old age.[1] The exact range is subject to academic debate, but the term is commonly used to denote the age range from around 45 to around 65 years.[2][3][4] This phase of life is marked by gradual physical, cognitive, and social decline in individuals as they age.”
My friend from Wisconsin calls it Beersby. I forget how the scoring works exactly. I believe it’s 1 pt for hitting the pole, 1 point for hitting the bottle, 1 point if the frisbee hits the ground, and 5 points for knocking the bottle off and it hitting the ground. You play to 21 pts.
As a "well into middle aged" man, hell yeah.
Sometimes my brain knows I can do something, tells my body to do it, and my body actually cooperates, and for one brief instant, it's glorious. And then it's pain.
Other times, my body does not cooperate. I'm out of shape, and I used to be able to do it, whatever "it" is, and my brain hasn't learned the lesson yet.

When tf did 35 mean "middle age"???
Dudes at work were talkin bout- "man, can you imagine graduating college at 30? Not even worth it then cause your lifes basically over already." These were interns who just turned 21/22.
If you live to be 80-90 at 30 you still have 50-60 years to live. 30-40 is actually very young for a lot of people.
The great thing about time is it never stops so Im more than likely going to still be here when they turn 30...and I am going to shiiiiiiiiit all over them on that day. Buy'em a walker and a pack of depends, talk to them in a higher volume- "happy birthday grandpa, tell me what insta was like."
You’re assuming the interns are gonna stay at the same job for nearly a decade lol
they said themselves they are. Theres over a dozen people here with 30+ years. Its a pretty good union gig. Despite what the news says there are still jobs you can start, make good money, and retire from.
But you almost always make more money by changing jobs.
Supposedly. But if these 20 year olds wont be here in a decade then they either hit the lottery, died, or popped on a drug test. theres 3 sets of father/son employees just within my dept. We do pretty good here.

TLDR : well it was too long so didnt read
Honestly, it was early, I don’t know what I was thinking even commenting that. You’re very right 😂
lmao do that please I beg of you and also !remind me 10 years

We tell ourselves as we dab Neutrogena at our dark circles.
Your quality of life may be vastly different in those last 20-30 years. And 80 is not avg life expectancy of an American man. 37 is closer to middle life
That’s why I said “if” because some people do live into their 90’s and rare 100’s. But even if you die at 75 you still have 45 years at 30.
average lifespan of a man is 74 ish.
Many make it beyond that. Take care of yourself.
Thank you. That actually helps.
Omg no way
But is it actually feasible to live till 80-90 in this economy?
"Middle-aged" means exactly that, so if 80-90 is the average life expectancy, 40-45 is middle-aged.
So they have 8 years left to live? That's sad.
That’s how felt 10 years ago and I how I still feel after reaching the top of the hill
They still have the "Middle Ages" mindset where basically you was dead at 38.
I’m 37 and this shit is just offensive
I'm 38 and realize it's just kids being kids. As long as they stay off my lawn, I don't care. /s
This without the /s
Male life expectancy in the US is 76.
Goddamn can we lower it to 40? I don’t have time for this shit.
When people realized most people die before 80
Man i hope we can extend our lifespan sognificantly. And soon.
Most people in the USA
Global life expectancy is 73.4 years. Americans average more than six years above that
Now do it for the G7 countries
Weird way to admit you're wrong, but carry on nephew.
Omg thank you, 38 here looking at this guy thinking he doesn’t look “middle aged” lol. Not young but certainly far from old. Haha
Not young but not old, hmm I wonder if there's a term to describe such a person ;)
I already said I was in denial!! Now you’re just twisting the knife! Lol
is there just some confusion about what middle aged means here or something ? 38x2 is 76. the average life expectancy is 74-76. you're decidedly middle aged my man. That's why they call it a "mid life crisis"

Well, when you sneeze and throw out your neck for a week, that's when you feel your age
😂
Username checks out!

Lmao, that part stung ngl
On Reddit, where 25+ means halfway-in-coffin.
PREACH!!!!
I turn 29+1 this year, and GenZ kids think of me as old.
Yeah, I guess you can call me Methusalem already. 😔
Well he's 44, so...
Well if you look at my father, grandfather and great grandfather, 35 is about 5 years past middle age
that is LITERALLY the middle of a mans life! WTF did *you* think it meant"?
Retirement plans for people younger than 60 include hopefully dying by 70.
Exactly! People acting like we are still in the 17th century
Well if you live to 70...
It is a subjective term. Some people think 1-30 is young. 31-60 is middle aged. 61 and up is old. 'Middle' can be thought of a range of ages in the middle of two other age ranges.
Im 35 he’s 38
If you die at 70...I mean with people smoking and drinking and doing dumb shit on Reddit fucking up their bones.
I guess anyone younger is a juvenile
Life expectancy is 75 so I mean it maths (assuming we don't mean literally middle and instead a 4-5 year range)
Since at least 1308. EDIT: the first line of Dante’s Inferno is “midway through life’s journey” which at the time was thought to be around 35 years old.

Where’s the location? Place looks awesome
Up in Maine.
Poland Spring bottle, jack pines are the only tree. VT, NH, or ME, up near Canada.

You can rule out the vast majority because there is no swearing or anger in this video
It cut out too early. There was swearing.

My fav yard game
What is it?

Call it the same in Jersey but we play in teams and don’t need to catch the bottle with the frisbee (assuming he had to in this video)
Yeah, when I played it we didn’t have to catch the bottle with the frisbee. Just had to stop it from hitting the ground with any means necessary.
In MN we play if you catch the bottle with the Frisbee it's a walk-off win.
Polish horseshoes
Beersby is probably the most common name. [Video demo here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPW7HJ5fNBU)
Looks like bottle bash from poleish sports.
You can find it on Amazon , the version we have is called Tipsy Toss, it’s a blast
Me too, but you’re not supposed to throw it that hard…
But he'll be "feelin it" for days.
As a "well into middle aged" man, hell yeah. Sometimes my brain knows I can do something, tells my body to do it, and my body actually cooperates, and for one brief instant, it's glorious. I'll be 40 this year and I've never read anything so accurate in my life. Edit: autocorrect being an asshole again
That’s peak athleticism if we’re being honest
Fucking love playing Beersbee
We called it Polish Horseshoes
Same here
TIL there is a thing called "Beersbee", and I learned that by watching a video of an absolute middle-aged master!
If only he did that with a beer in his hand
That's not middle-aged, sweetie. That guy is young af, just not a fetus.
He's young, if I tried that I'd be in traction for months (60)
how's this considered "nextfuckinglevel", anyways, let the downvotes come.
Needs the music from Apocalypse Now
Gotta love beersby
Kudos to the camera op for nailing the shot of the catch, but you completely missed the apparent bear attack happening behind you.
Nono, she preferred the bear over men. We don't want no "told you so" because there's footage of it...
She:He didn't try hard for me Him:
Whew that craft IPA really coming in clutch for this snag.
Seventeen saves later, that dude is mighty proud. Lots of yes/no moments in this video. And a few well stretched tendons for tomorrow...
He passed that agility test
What game is this?
Tipsy Toss
He’s going to feel it tmrw.

What game is this?
Hey man there's a beverage here!
Here is a better more nuanced version we play in our neighborhood, called Bottle Drop. https://tailgating-challenge.com/bottledrop-review/
Impressive, but he would have almost certainly spilled his beer. Resulting in points
Bro! That is some fucking hustle!!
Love Beersbi !
Lol I was waiting for the camera to pan over to someone else
This game was great… still unbeaten. For the year I played it anyway. Never found anyone since that’s heard of it or wanted to play.
He is going to wonder why his back hurts the next day.
Middle aged guy. He’s younger than me. Oh. 😢
If he wouldv hold a beer in his other hand he wouldnt have spilled a drup either!
Never felt older at 40
This is how you pull a muscle.
Is that beersbie? Ive played that with the boys from Canada
nice but those annoying cows in the background are destroying the whole effect /s
The slowed down voices in the background sound like moos from a group of cows lol
What game is this ?
dude looks healthy too. Maybe if he looked more like your average american then you would say he's about middle aged (cardiac arrest at 61)
“SAVE TEH BUUUUUUUR”
He is gonna feel it tmr
r/maybemaybemaybe
Middle age lmao
No way that dude is ~45+
Dude, that's a fairly young adult with an athletic build.
Sure are a lot of cows near that lake!
Corny.
He’s gonna be sore for a few weeks
This is a shitty version of this game
The title is pessimistic
