I did do like half a quiet chuckle when he said both Lawrence and Herbert deserved shampoo comercials, and then asked Tony if he could relate to that

iLiketuttles704

That’s cold

danathecount

But great structure and setup

hunt35744

Like Tony’s head

CheersFromBabylon

Reminds me of Joe Buck and John Smoltz calling a baseball game. Joe reads the sponsorship from head and shoulders, and John says he never, ever uses it. Joe immediately covers and goes "For the folks at home, John is bald. No disrespect to the good people at head and shoulders."

snortingajax

Smoltz doesn't take the opportunity for a hair plug joke?

Jombafomb

I mean, he almost died because of those hairplugs, so yeah, he should’ve absolutely made fun of them

LordDinglebury

Context? I'm unfamiliar with him as I'm not a baseball fan.

Jombafomb

“During his eighth hair plug procedure in 2011, as the baseball season loomed. According to Buck, he woke up after the procedure unable to speak, possibly because his vocal cord became paralyzed due to a protective cuff that was used during his procedure. Buck also theorizes that stress caused by the deterioration of his marriage might have also left him vulnerable to injury.” Ok maybe it didn’t almost kill him but it could have killed his career

BenMcAdoos_ElCamino

Joe Buck = Tobias Funke confirmed.

LordDinglebury

Jesus Christ!! TIL, thank you!

sfxer001

Yeesh. That sounds familiar like I experienced it live.

TheLongestLake

I'm rewatching the game. Al Michaels commenting on screengrab of QBs: "This looks like a cutaway for a shampoo commercial" Tony Dungy: "Haha" Al Michaels: "All that hair are you jealous Tony" Tony Dungy: "Haha yeah" Awkward silence Al Michaels: "Well the Jaguars will start here at the 25" I think Al is still good. Dungy is just the least colorful commenter here. He sounded like a shy kid who only responds in conversation if asked a question.

hjugm

When he said, “I’d take the points, but I’m a defensive coach”, I knew the game had long passed him by. He’s never had much of a personality, and being a defensive coach seems to match that somehow.

yungPH

I was definitely surprised to see that he was commentating lol

[deleted]

Why was he commentating by the way? Was Collinsworth sick or something?

SupahCharged

He did the Sunday night game with tirico

TigerBasket

I didn't mind him then, but then again I just was losing my mind from losing

SupahCharged

I know the feeling

FORluvOFdaGAME

He did one of the Sunday games. Can't remember which one

WaymoresReds

NBC took pity on us to not have to hear him 2 nights in a row

sonfoa

You'd think people would appreciate Collinsworth more after being subjected to Dungy

BadDadJokes

I love Collinsworth. Al and Cris was a fantastic combo. Tirico has big shoes to fill, but he’s going a good job.

luciusetrur

Tirico got big shoes himself. Was great with Gruden

s2r3

Yeah he's very opposite of Al. Al is a bit funny and crazy and a gambler and Dungy is very proper and buttoned up. I don't think it made for the best chemistry.

tuffghost8191

he's basically the antithesis of Madden, and Madden and Michaels were the GOAT duo

Gone213

How'd he get amazon to allow him to go back to NBC for the playoff games?

theordinarypoobah

Seems like they'd *want* him to do the playoff games. Al is on Amazon in order to show that Amazon is seriously committed to putting together a respectable broadcast/stream for their NFL games. He's a legitimate sports broadcaster, and having him associated with high profile games--even if not on Amazon--serves the purpose he has on Amazon quite well. Once they are established as a credible broadcasting entity, they'll probably be more interested in finding younger talent that they'd lock in.

id10t_you

Dungy did some Notre Dame games and I couldn’t wait for him to not.

amjhwk

Dude is boring as fuck on the pregame post-game shows. Idk why the execs watched that and decided that would be great for a commentator job

Segat1133

Al is still one of the quickest with witty comments like that and it shows weekly. I always find him entertaining.

ryantrw5

Al Michaels doesn’t really do well unless he has someone who can banter with him. Thursday nights are so boring. Kirk is good at college football but not nfl at all.

Axleffire

I miss the Troy Polamalu head&shoulders commercials.

PistachioTheLizard

How are you rewatching the game if I can ask? YouTube or dvr?

Kashmir33

What makes you say he is still good? Does he ever get exciting about anything anymore? It extremely boring listening to him commentate a football game.

thexbreak

I like Al, to me he is the voice of the NFL, but he needs a younger counterpart. Putting him with Dungy nearly put me to sleep.

kensingtonking011

That’s the biggest problem. It’s like comedy, you can’t have two straight men, you need one guy that’s a wild card like Tony romo.

SilverScorpion00008

Say what you want about Romo but the funny shit he says makes me listen to him sometimes than fall asleep

Rkozlow

Unintentionally funny.

[deleted]

Eh, I think he knows how goofy he is and leans in

Zhuul

Rick Lovato… Demi Lovato’s husband… *Nantz making unintelligible wtf noises*

tnecniv

When it comes to baseball, I’m a Dodgers fan. Joe Davis calls the majority of their games. Sometimes he gets paired up with a color person that comes off in a restrained way and I think it’s so boring. They both have interesting things to say but they’re both the same kind of character with the same humor and pacing. When Orel Hersheiser gets in there with Joe, though, he does his weird old man thing and it’s funny, and it works bringing out the humor and pacing from Joe and I’d listen to that all day

gregCubed

i was so disappointed they only had d-train (dontrelle willis) in there for so few games. loved how he interacted with davis... eric karros on the other hand was SO boring and seemed pretty biased. nomar (garciaparra) and jessica mendoza weren't bad but they weren't really special either. the epitome of good not great (which isn't a bad thing!)

tnecniv

Dontrelle is so fun. When Orel retires I want him to take over as the main color guy. I like Mendoza but she really gives me play-by-play energy. If it was her and a goofy color guy, I think that would work

Man_of_Average

As a guy who loves Romo, he's really fallen off as a commentator. He needs to go away from simping certain guys and storylines and go back to breaking down individual plays and schemes. He was at his best when I felt like I was learning something from a goofy charming guy.

[deleted]

Al wasn’t the issue. He needs someone to feed off of and set him up. Dungy was like that one friend who is hellbent on “partying” but then spends the night in a puddle on Xanny bars.

AaronRodgersMustache

Oddly specific there bud

Captainspacedick69

Oh come on. Who doesn’t have a friend that routinely makes their brain mush with Xanax bars.

J_House1999

Every game should be called by Kevin Harlan

SimpinOnGinAndJuice1

Hear me out here... Al and Gronk.

catboypower

Michaels w/ Schlereth

hjugm

Michaels with McAfee

Vivalaredsox

Tony Dungy is a wet blanket. Whoever thought it was a good idea to have him broadcast a game should be rocketed to the moon.

brizzboog

I thought someone slipped a Valium in my drink watching that game.

Man_of_Average

I'm sure he's a nice guy who's just on the quiet side, but he doesn't have the energy or eloquence you need out of a commentator.

FALParatrooper

I can think of a dozen other former/current HCs to broadcast over him. Dude sucks.

ives09

💖MARSHAWN & AL MICHAELS💖

Birdamus

*Al makes a slightly veiled reference to the spread or over/under* “You about that kind of action, Marshawn, or is it just me?”

Im_ready_hbu

Lmao the banter between Al Michaels and beastmode would be legendary

DevoutGreenOlive

"...Yeah."

Revised_LimaM

Al, Marshawn, and Gronk

Moss81-

“Marshawn how do you think this Seattle defense is going to manage Justin Jefferson?” *“I picked Toad in Mario Kart. I love his hat. Toad a bad mf”*

Pksoze

I don't agree with you guys...Al wasn't fine...he was pretty flat and boring the whole game. I agree Dungy has a dry personality but trying to pin this all on him is unfair. Al had one of the great comebacks of all time and had all the enthusiasm of a guy reading his grocery list.

Realistic_Camp5232

Romo and Nantz were terrible also, Just wasn’t a good week for announcers

horse_renoir13

Put some respect on Burkhardt, I love that guy. Also we just need more Kevin Harlan lol

[deleted]

Harlan is the best imo

hereforthiscoment

“I’M CALLING BOTH GAMES!”

Timpa87

>Harlan is the best imo Not sure if it was international broadcast or radio broadcast of the Eagles/Patriots Super Bowl in 2018 is so much better with him calling it than the Michaels/Collinsworth broadcast.

theordinarypoobah

Screw it. Someone bring in that Australian guy who called that game.

amjhwk

I mean that's just true of every superbowl, his radio calls are so much better than the TV announcers

CybertronGuy98

HE IS HOUDINI!

kloiberin_time

If I were in charge of a network I would back up a Brinks truck for Harlan.

StalinsStallions

He does the national radio broadcasts a lot. I’ve seen him say in interviews he prefers that to television because it’s a different style

kloiberin_time

Brinks. Truck.

babylamar33

Yep radio allows him to be more descriptive and lively since you naturally talk more than on TV. Plus you don't have to look good for cameras most of the time either. I'd take the same deal on that one

unloader86

Burk and Olsen are a good team. Olsen stumbled in the early part of getting the gig, but he's found his footing and compliments Burkhardt well. Flag planted. Bring it on. lol

hank87

Of course G-REG stumbled at first, it's hard to get a running start when you [have a third leg](https://youtu.be/9ujKxpAvLKg)

Man_of_Average

Olsen talks like a kindergarten teacher. "You aaaalmost got it Johnny, we are just going to have to try a liiittle bit harder next time, but first lets take a nappy nap."

curgl

This was my first week hearing Harlan call a game on the radio and oh my fuck was he fantastic. I thought the dude was good on TV but he might be the best commentator in every sport and medium

Shirleyfunke483

You should listen to his legendary chiefs chargers call below. “IM CALLING BOTH GAMES” https://youtu.be/PxkOG-WeLVo

Malfallaxx

One of the best calls of all time haha

moffattron9000

I’m breaking every FCC rule in the book is an all time line.

[deleted]

I like Burkhardt and Olsen a lot.

Bakersfield_Buffalo

I think of Harlan more as the voice of the nba, but he’s a great commentator imo. Meanwhile Eagle is stuck being the #2 on cbs when he’s so much better than Nantz

goodellsmallcock

Ian Eagle is the most under appreciated announcer in sports. Dude always brings the energy

Competitive_Ad9413

it's amazing how people don't understand how great Ian Eagle truly is

Spiritual-Athlete-12

Is that who did the Vikings/ giants?

nc_nicholas

Kevin Burkhardt is super underrated, glad he’s in the top spot at Fox now. Greg has been really strong as well in the few games I’ve seen them call this season.

Thick_Safe1198

Tirico was good

MajoraOfTime

Yeah unless I missed something egregious, Collinsworth seemed pretty subdued also. Kinda didn't notice him, which is pretty good for him. Tirico was great though.

generation_D

My unpopular opinion is that Collinsworth is fine. He goes over the top gushing about Mahomes/Rodgers/Brady, but that’s just because he’s a big football nerd with major appreciation for any great player. Tune in to any Collinsworth broadcast and you’ll also hear him gushing about any other great player on either team, whether it’s a DT, LG, CB, whatever. He also gives some pretty good Xs and Os analysis. Romo is worse at this point because he literally can’t shut up about Mahomes/Allen/Brady and will openly root for them if one of them is playing

RaindropsInMyMind

I love Collinsworth, people get annoyed because he sounds stuck up but that’s just the way he talks. He’s good at explaining what is happening and is actually excited about it most of the time unlike Dungy.

Zinthar

Now here’s a guy with some genuine enthusiasm for NFL color commentary.

PeteF3

Cris' breakdown of the Huntley goal line leap was great--I wouldn't have noticed the discrepancy between the Ravens' blocking and the leap if he hadn't explained it to me.

hearshot_kid

Exactly. Collinsworth just loves watching great players be great, so he’s always on the lookout for it. So yeah it’s over the top, but it’s because he always skews positive. If your team is losing, it gets annoying and that’s why people don’t like him. But like you said, he’s really good at giving actual Xs and Os breakdowns of the play right after it happens, which is an incredibly important skill. If there’s an incomplete pass, he can diagnose what went wrong immediately. Aikman is also great at this. They both seem to know what happened as if they already watched five replays and broke down the film, but it’s only seconds after the play ended. For some reason people ignore that part of their jobs, and only focus on their personalities or perceived slights against their own team.

ThaNorth

Romo brings up those QBs in games they're not even playing in.

MajoraOfTime

That's a fair point. Hell, him praising Rodgers in the season finale overshadowed him praising Hutchinson to some of us Lions fans. But if you're getting paid to watch some of the best players ever perform, typically in games you commentate, you'd probably gush, too, to be honest. And yeah, as a color commentator, he's pretty good also. He mispronounces names, which can be grating at times, but he's usually decent. And yeah Romo can be way worse than Collinsworth.

zerofocus

Collinsworth sounded like he was sick or getting over a sickness, maybe that's why he was quieter.

MikePaisanTirico

he was fantastic

komugis

His call of the fumble was awesome.

lkooy87

I liked Greg Olsen

CodyNorthrup

Take. Shot every time he mentions TE

BlindWillieJohnson

Romo was awful in a different way. Al and Tony acted like they were dissecting a game that happened 10 years ago. Romo called a game like he had personal skin in the outcome.

Idontknow99699

He’s done that all year when calling Chiefs/Bills games.

redditor_5678

I’m certainly biased but the Tirico call on Hubbard’s long TD run was 🔥

WAR_T0RN1226

Tirico is unmatched in his calls of big plays. One of the best broadcast calls I watched on live TV was him calling the [Ravens kick six](https://youtu.be/pBkjOrYv1Gk) against the Browns years ago on MNF. While he's made it to the biggest spot in being the primary SNF guy, I think him and Gruden on MNF was an incredible duo.

alrightwtf

I LOVE Tirico's "HE. WILL. SCORE!" On breakaway tuds.

andrew_six

I wonder if Romo went to the Bills locker room to celebrate after the game.

Tubamajuba

Yes, but Mr. January quickly called security due to sexual harassment.

ThaNorth

He went looking for the *'Alien'*

MeinKampfySeat

I really thought Romo might need medical intervention to help remove Josh Allen’s balls from his mouth by the end of the game

HappyGilOHMYGOD

Worst I've ever heard Romo be. One of the most blatant examples of a commentator knowing what the outcome was gonna be and trying to push the story line

Insatiable_void

Somehow pats/bills the week before was even worse. Two weeks in a row watching romo openly root for the bills…

[deleted]

Dawgday21

Not sure what Erin Andrews gets paid to do. She talks for about 3 minutes before each game.

Blade_Trinity3

She was on PMT and she said her role is as much a reporter as it is an extra producer. She said for example, she was the one making sure cameras were set up to capture the absolute melt down by MBC when he stripped down and left the game. She said she saw him acting weird, so they were able to catch good shots of all the "action"

INAC_Kramerica

That would be very strange since Erin Andrews wasn't involved with that game. The sideline reporter in that game was Jen Hale.

Blade_Trinity3

I will relisten to the episode tomorrow and tell you what exactly I've misremembered

Blade_Trinity3

It was Antonio brown in the divisional round, not sure if it was that same year, he went out of the game with a leg. She also mentioned getting cameras on Aaron Donald when he was getting fighty on the sidelines.

MoreTrifeLife

That’s hilarious

purplewave21

Our of the loop- who is MBC?

iRockaflame

Mr Baffled Commenter It's Antonio Brown lol

ItsGoldJerry

Mr Big Chest! Antonio Brown.

BobSacamanosRatHat

Oh god now you’ve done it. Mr Blacklisted Companion

fatcIemenza

I watched the 2nd half on mute, not joking. Romo really went downhill from his first couple seasons

LongDickMcangerfist

Romo is so god damn annoying it’s annoying watching a game with him

A_Random_Username_0

I have no idea if it’s the first time I paid attention to Romos voice or what. The first thing I kept thinking was why is there an NFL Playoff announcer that has a voice like a smoker. There’s just a raspy sound to it. I doubt he smoked considering he was a professional QB.

[deleted]

What do you mean it wasn’t good? You don’t like gagging on Allen’s dick the whole game?

ThaNorth

You mean the *Alien*?

Evissi

That's Mr. January to you.

Shirleyfunke483

I don’t know about that Jim

Gone213

It's a shame Talib's brother decided to kill someone and thus forced fox to kick him off as a broadcaster. He was always stuck with the lions lol. He started out rough like anyone would when starting out, but after a while he became comfortable and it became kind of fun to listen to him.

pot8odragon

He really calls games like he couldn’t care less

TooHappyFappy

His call of the Lawrence two point conversion vs the Tirico call of the Hubbard fumble TD made me very thankful Tirico is now full time on SNF. Respect to Al and he can still be good but he definitely needs someone with a personality beside him.

SenorScratchySack

Tirico really sounded like he was enjoying the game

soulefood

At one point he just flat out said it. It was something like “isn’t this game great? This third matchup of the year is like a chess match where they just know all of each others’ strategies”

thatsyurbl00d

Is there a more consummate professional than Mike Tirico? He feels like the next-gen Bob Costas.

Bright_Ahmen

Aside from the sexual harassment allegations

thatsyurbl00d

Looked it up…Damn. I rescind and repent.

Insatiable_void

It was 30 years ago, he was suspended and went to counseling and nothing has come up since. Are people offered the opportunity to improve and recover from things they’ve done wrong? Just a thought.

TheIllusiveGuy

Incidentally, I'd call call Al Michaels and Tony Dungy's commentary 'television compost'

[deleted]

Just trash, it hasn't turned into anything useful.

SheenzMe

All the people making excuses for Al. Go to YouTube and watch the game winning field goal. Remind yourself that this was the 3rd biggest comeback in playoff history. It ended as the clock hit 0:00 and he barely made the field goal. His call was pathetic. Thats how I would have called the game if I had a giant bet on the Chargers ML.

2112Lerxst

Lol on the SB winning stop last year, Al just kept on commenting as though he was waiting for 5th down coming up.

OminousSalad

That whole broadcast at the end of the Superbowl was incredibly disappointing. Pretty sure they wanted to swap to the Winter Olympics as fast as possible or something. Felt like "well folks that's the Superbowl, now go watch some Curling" I also remember him kinda sounding disappointed when the Rams kicked the game winning field goal against the Buccaneers. The call right before that was the "deep down fieeeeeld! He's got kupp again!"

jrfolker

Right. I often get annoyed at Collinsworth’s hyperbole, but thank God he was there to infuse some enthusiasm.

Pksoze

It's really quiet pathetic. A lot of people here (including me) grew up with Al and don't want to admit the obvious...the man is checked out.

Wallshington

I actually can't believe people are defending Al. He has no enthusiasm or excitement for big plays. It really does take away from the viewing experience. All the normal shit inbetween plays, sure he can do fine but we need someone to bring the energy when shit happens. He puts me to sleep.

Mapsachusetts

Am I so out of touch? No, it’s the children who are wrong.

iia

Tbf he's right about sports media. That said fuck Tony.

nevertrustamod

He's also absolutely right to not take internet criticism seriously. If everybody famous did that they'd all either turn into reality stars or kill themselves.

BlindWillieJohnson

The internet wasn’t wrong though. That’s the most lifeless game I’ve ever heard him call, and I say that as a longtime admirer

yellowcats

Dungy is 67 and broadcasts like hes 97.

Waterfish3333

What if I told you Dungy was only 22 years older than Tom Brady? Next 30 for 30.

gopack1217

I just don’t know how know someone who’s objective can’t muster any sort of excitement for a 27 point comeback. It felt like a preseason game was being announced

PsychologicalSpace50

I fart in your general direction

Sternjunk

I wasn’t sure if I was watching one of the most incredible comebacks in playoff history or a wake for Brandon Staley.

forgedinbeerkegs

I love Al, but send both he and Dungy out to pasture. Especially Dungy.

[deleted]

Take Collinsworth with them...

[deleted]

Jac must be in here downvoting people talking shit about his dad. The only thing Cris Collinsworth adds to the booth is gobbling golden boy dick and pointing out how every TE played basketball in college.

pabstdrinker

Get Gus Johnson some permanent status!

nc_nicholas

For real like how is that dude a fringe commentator for the NFL??

medicmatt

Maybe, just maybe, they could have found someone other than a 78 year old man to call the game.

VitricTyro

Just a reminder that Tony Dungy is incredibly homophobic and not many people seem to know.

Parks1993

It's also been highly speculated that his son killed himself because he was gay

[deleted]

I dont really care that he is personally against it as long as he kept it contained and he wasnt hurting anyone else. But he has actively tried to stifle homosexual marriage and to me, thats when he crossed a line. Who the fuck is he to tell other people how to live their best life? You dont agree with it? Fine, just shut up and accept it, dont force your ideals on others. I dont think people with green hair and face tats are attractive, but you dont see me dumping bleach on their head and taking them to get a tat removal. I simply walk by and think "that girl looks stupid"

[deleted]

Details?

VitricTyro

Good article on it here: https://www.advocate.com/voices/2023/1/14/tony-dungy-and-when-someone-you-admire-turns-out-be-homophobe

Antguap19

He’s washed. Time to retire.

My-Cousin-Bobby

We'll take him as our QB

what_the_shart

“I drop back to pass… and I’m gonna be taken down! Jeffery Simmons unblocked from the interior! Wow! Man oh man what a play! I’m gonna feel this one tomorrow!”

My-Cousin-Bobby

Fucking christ now I'm just imagining Al Michael's playing QB and narrating the whole game while he does it Lmaoo

Taskmaster112

Al Michaels and John Madden are the goats. Enjoy Al while you can.

CockPissMcBurnerFuck

Al Michaels isn’t a high-energy broadcaster. He’s not exactly Pat Summerall, but he’s closer to that than he is to Gus Johnson. Al is at his best when he has another commentator to be the hype man. That’s why, despite the memes, he worked so well with Collinsworth. Cris has his faults but he always meets the energy and importance of the moment, and works as a great contrast to Al, who is more emphasis than volume. Putting him with Tony Dungy, who is a soft-spoken man without a ton of personality, makes for a snooze fest. Pat Summerall had John Madden.

ftwin

I’d rather there relaxed broadcast than Romo’s non stop talking for 3 hours any day

hjugm

I like Romo’s energy, but the amount of times he says, “I think” is annoying. I think they should go for it I’d call this I wouldn’t have done that I read this We get it dude. Talk about the game and not you.

StudyRoom-F

I honestly love him as much as the day he started. But once the internet loves something long enough that thing becomes irrationally hated on and nitpicked. *example: Doris Burke.

[deleted]

He also sounded bored and unenthusiastic when he said this.

throwawayjoeyboots

Al is 80ish. It’s time to hang them up. I get that he had a shitty hand dealt with the awful Amazon games. But come on man. You and Dungy were awful

omglawlz

When the game winning FG was taking place it sounded like he was losing a bet

petmoo23

Al was a great one, but he's washed. Time to move on.

elmatador12

Al Michaels is the GOAT play by play announcer. No matter the game. It’s who he’s paired with is what makes or breaks his games. I just hope Dungy never calls another game. Not only does he not talk often, his demeanor is the exact opposite of what you want when watching a game. Michaels and Madden were the all time best IMO and nobody has ever come close.

[deleted]

He is not wrong. A lot of social media, Reddit included, likes to circle jerk bashing announcers so that they can give each other fake internet points and feel good about shitting on someone else career. The Al Michaels broadcast was fine. Just like most of them are.

omglawlz

I think it lacked excitement in the second half. And the game winning kick call left a lot to be desired.

matthewryan12

I don’t know that I’ve ever once gotten annoyed with a broadcast crew the way it seems like everyone on Reddit does. I don’t really care what they’re saying.

PCP_Panda

I’d just like to see commentary that does their job, tells us the formation, who received the handoff or catch and every detail that’s relevant to football

Beekle-4

Internet compost is a great term, I'm gonna start using it. There's a lot of internet compost out there

DowntownJulieBrown1

What a definitely not out of touch old man who definitely is still consistently good at his job

tootnine

Sleepy Al. Very low energy

dcWitness

The whopper commercial is more exciting than al and dungy

MixonWitDaWrongCrowd

Hang it up Al

ChargieJ

I dont know about you guys but I'd rather hear them asleep in the booth than listen to Romo

Pksoze

It's amazing to see the turn on Romo. As a Cowboys hater I enjoy it immensely though.

ChargieJ

I don't like any announcers that do too much

F1reatwill88

Al Michaels is a national damn icon. If he wants to fart into the mic for three hours you will listen to it and say thank you.

FearlessPickle

I re-listened to a couple of the calls, and it definitely was bad, but all this criticism led me to realize how little I actually care about the commentary or anything that gets said during the broadcast. Because I legit didn't even notice anything unusual about it while I was watching. I'm tempted to try just muting the games from now on and listening to my favorite music while I watch.

chillypete99

The only person who is a bigger a-hole than Al Michaels is Al Michaels tomorrow.
