Not even at the start of the season. He's calling a Brady game with his brother. Niners already 12-0. Eli: "No, this can't be." He leaves Peyton to finish the broadcast. Third quarter ESPN announces he's been signed to the Giants. Brady looks up at the sky. He curses the heavens, pulls out his emergency tablet, and spikes it into the ground.
Counterpoint: the Niners went through Jimmy G., Trey Lance, Brock Purdy, and Josh Johnson this year. Whether it's the scheme or the line, something has to be done to protect the QB before they can turn to an immobile 46 year old.
No chance for Rodgers.. we then have to trade for him and his contract with barely any picks..
Brady is a real possibility because we can just sign him to a one-year deal.
Perfect situation. You tell Brock he's the future but he has to heal up and learn from master Brady... The commitment is further cemented by trading Lance.
Not very realistic. Keeping Lance and Purdy means the 49ers pay them both ~10 million. Lance has a dead cap of ~20MM next year though, so trading him doesn't make much sense, not in 2023 at least.
You can easily decrease the cap hit of a $25m deal to $6-7m with enough void years.
Considering how cheap Purdy is, it shouldn't have any long-term negative effects for the Niners.
Brady doesn’t owe the Bucs anything and if he wants to play another season it should be what works best for him. He got us a ring, so Godspeed Mr. GOAT.
He probably would get a low contract with a ton of incentives. 15m base +25 M icentives (pro bowl, 30+ td, sb win etc). With bucs he did 25+15 in the first year
It all depends on how the 49ers are planning things long term. Were they planning on relying a rookie QB when they extended their guys like Warner, Deebo, etc? Their biggest upcoming person to sign is Bosa.
Brady can definitely fit in with void years. Incentives might work via playoffs since they will be NLTBE.
It's his dream team that he grew up watching. His dad would take him to 9ers games as a kid. He has always been very public he wanted to take snaps in red & gold
2 QBs on rookie deals (one being a 7th rounder) and a hometown discount from Brady? If Brady signs a "discount" at 15-20 million, +3.5 for Lance, and +1 for Purdy, that's less than half the cost for a bunch of QBs including Dak, Wilson, and Rodgers.
The 49ers actually had really good QB depth. You had the starter, the back-up was the former starter who had played in a Super Bowl (probably the best back-up in the league), and the third stringer was a rookie who was secretly good! Unfortunately it is impossible to have a good fourth-string QB. All fourth string QB's suck
It really does for him too because he only is guaranteed 77k on his contract and that’s it. A QB in their contract year that takes a team to a conference championship can make so much money in FA but because he was the last pick in the draft this past year he won’t be able to reach FA for a while and will be getting paid peanuts compared to what he deserves. Now it’s not like 49ers are actually going to cut him so he will still be making a lot compared to the average person. But if this injury ends up hindering his career then he will be making significantly less compared to other QBs who are less deserving. I just hope he can keep balling out like he has.
They would be literally unstoppable. A healthy 49ers with TB throwing, I can’t think of a team right now that could beat that, except maybe the two teams about to play in the Super Bowl, would be a good game lol
Literally all Kyle would have to do is run the Jimmy offense. Most of the boot legs showed up when Purdy took over. Brady could run the <2.5 second passing offense with ease. Then they can just tell Purdy to get TJ and take a full recovery while Brady runs the show in 2023.
>Brady could run the <2.5 second passing offense with ease.
I think Brady may be the best ever at doing that tbh. I’ve never seen a QB just know exactly where to throw the ball with complete conviction in less than 2 seconds. It’s infuriating.
Yeah, like Brady is definitely not playing like he's 40 anymore (lol) but his arm is fantastic and he knows the game better than anyone. He would slice and dice his way back into the playoffs.
I know I’m biased but Brady can still sling it. He injured his right rotator cuff and was still throwing bombs to Evans with perfect velocity. Brady would unlock the Shanahan offense in a way that hasn’t been seen since the 2016 Falcons.
Nightmare shit man. It’s fucking insane how brutal and volatile the QB situation has been since Kyle took over and hell you could argue since the Kaepernick days
That's real, "Back in my day I threw for tds with a broke arm" energy.
Rough ending for one of the great stories of this year. I hope he can fully recover from this, but I don't know enough about UCL injuries.
If that's the "funny bone", I hit it really hard on a shower faucet in basic training, and my ring & pinky fingers went completely numb for a few days. Hurt like hell
I had an ulnar nerve entrapment for ages where my pinky and ring finger were constantly numb. Went to a chiropractor and he couldn't fix it. Went to a massage therapist and she started massaging into my chest near the armpit and my goddamn fingers came back! It had been like 2 years dealing with it. Eventually resolved by grinding a tennis ball into that spot and getting a better foam top for the bed and sleeping on my other side.
people COMPLETELY discount what a massage therapist can do. I have spondylosis and my LMT wife gave me a massage 2 years ago... haven't needed one for that condition since. now I'll ask for one if I just need to chillax.
despite everything else that was happening yesterday that shit was probably the most maddening thing to see
edit: [and I did call it out](https://reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/10og67k/_/j6err7z/?context=1)
yeah it’s fucked up putting him back out there and potentially career ruining. i get the competitiveness, but purdy should’ve refused to go out. he literally couldn’t throw anyway. i would’ve preferred to see a maccffrey run offense - the D already knew they were gonna just run the ball anyway
I’m all for it just for the irony of it all. Imagine signing a 46-year old quarterback because you need someone who is not an injury risk. And if that’s not enough, you have the even greater irony of the veteran Jimmy G. being replaced by the veteran Quarterback he was drafted to replace… almost a decade ago.
I was against Brady, but if he wants to do one more year with his childhood team then retire I might be down at this point if Purdy ends up missing a lot of the year.
But that's only 4 QB's with Jimmy G leaving... Or did you mean to sign him too? Because then that's 5 QB's and then you can really start working on building depth now.
Trade for Rodgers as the 3rd quarter set up guy, then sign Brady as the closer. They can even have the entrance music as he enters the game in the 4th quarter
Only good news outta this completely shit situation is that Brady may now have a chance to finally have his storybook ending. I hope he convinces Gronk to also join him. He'd have a ridiculous amount of weapons to work with and a loaded defense.
Oh he 100% will convince Gronk to join him next year in SF. It’s just a matter of whether the 49ers want him or not.
And no, money is not an issue for Brady at this point in his career lol. If there’s any team in the NFL that Brady would sign for the 1 year minimum contract, it’s the 49ers.
Honestly… I was against signing Brady but if Trey is the only available guy on our roster and Brady is willing to sign for 7 figures… then f it. Go for it. I’m irrationally angry after getting to the NFC Championship **six times** in the last 12 years and not being able to close the deal. Do it. Sign him.
I feel like he’s cemented a positive legacy (in an unfortunate way)
He will either return to being stellar, or be a what-if story: Mr Irrelevant who was looking amazing until injury derailed his career.
Bunch of clowns yesterday saying he should have just played through it. I admire him for trying, but I hope those people think twice next time before they act tough.
Bunch of dudes at the party I watched the game at were calling him derogatory names and questioning his toughness. Meanwhile they’re all overweight, downing beer and fried food on a couch. Which there’s nothing wrong with on its own, except when you’re calling out the dude who outperformed every expectation ever placed on him in his pro career, after tearing his UCL. It was a shameful display.
I remember when everyone thought Josh Allen had a torn UCL despite being able to throw a 60 yard pass. That shit is not possible with a torn UCL. It’s like trying to perform an olympic high jump with a ruptured Achilles.
Those people apparently don’t understand why having feeling in one’s hand is important for gripping/throwing a football so I doubt they do much thinking at all
Because even with the backup in they were having trouble communicating and executing plays.
A huge part of the QBs job is knowing what the fuck is going on, and making good decisions. You can't just throw a random guy in there and ask them to run plays they haven't practiced and explain them each in 10 seconds in a loud environment...
Your season is over, are you risking injuring Deebo, CMC, or Juice by putting them under center when they're not used to protecting themselves in the pocket?
It's not like wildcatting is going to get them back in the game, it might get them a few completions. They're not out there with Taysom Hill who is in the QB meetings.
It would have been such a bad look for him once they brought him back out to play if he started throwing the ball like normal.
But once it was clear they were pretty much just gonna run the ball except for like two 3-yard attempts, then it was pretty evident that his arm was fucked. Especially given the magnitude of the situation.
What controversy? Lance is coming off of a broken ankle with only a handful of NFL games under his belt. Purdy won’t be around for training camp at best. Jimmy is moving on. We need to find a guy.
Didn’t he technically complete one pass (screen) after going back in? Dude legit completed a playoff pass with a complete UCL tear and I get winded walking up the stairs….
Damm that sucks for him somewhat impressive he went back out even if he
couldn't throw maybe some of the more obnoxious people will stop saying
he is weak for not "playing through" his injury now.
There are a lot of dumb ass people on the internet who get way too much attention. The same people who probably wanted Lamar to put a brace on and go play as well.
Eagles knew he couldn’t throw past 5 yards. Just stack the box because the run is the only way they can beat you. People act like the Eagles would have stopped stacking the box if Purdy toughed it out. Respect to him for going out there even if he knew he couldn’t do much.
We're to the point people can agree Shanahan made some voodoo doctor mad at some point right?
Seriously the worst QB health luck for a team I have ever seen in My life.
And the fourth got injured after like 10 plays. It's wild when a team can say, well if our fourth qb didn't go on IR we could've made the super bowl.
Edited to say could've instead of would've
Is there a more unlucky team seriously? When you thought they found their guy, this happens? I mean Lance had his ankle broken, Jimmy his foot, now that, it´s unbelievable.
Shoutout to all those saying Purdy was whiny yesterday and the injury wasn’t that bad.
Man still powered through throwing some short passes yesterday too.
Stop. We can only take so much pain.
Lance breaks his damn fibula and torn a couple ligaments.
Jimmy fractures his foot while playing like 2019 Jimmy again.
Purdy takes over and and starts doing his best Jimmy G impersonation and is looking damn good… tears his damn UCL on his first drive of the nfc title game….
WHAT THE F***
This is just wrong. Damn you, football gods.
Yeah that fucking sucks
Be ready for a deluge of reports about how the 49ers will attempt to obtain two 49ers fans: Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers

I...like Tom Brady now?
You shut your whore mouth
*looks at flair* I genuinely have no idea what to do if Brady becomes a 49ers
Buy a Brady jersey, and know if it's a SF v Buff SB next year, Brady doesn't lose to the Bills.
Counterpoint: the Niners went through Jimmy G., Trey Lance, Brock Purdy, and Josh Johnson this year. Whether it's the scheme or the line, something has to be done to protect the QB before they can turn to an immobile 46 year old.
In before Shanahan runs QB power with Brady on the first play
Brady about to rush 1k yards next season
Rush strictly by definition, of course
Brady power walk statistics.
T. Brady - 147 Lanky-old-man-shamble yards from scrimmage P.S. Tom Brady and Tyreek Hill race in a 40 yard dash, but Tyreek moonwalks. Make it happen.
Brady knows how to protect himself. He made a line with the worst LT in the league looking good.
No chance for Rodgers.. we then have to trade for him and his contract with barely any picks.. Brady is a real possibility because we can just sign him to a one-year deal.
Brock getting a year to heal up and learn from Brady sounds like it could be a really good thing.
And what about Lance? We're in a bizarre situation. This just made more questions
Someone posted a stat yesterday saying Shanahan averages 2.2 QB injuries a season in his time as OC / HC. Keep Lance, you'll need him too.
What happens when you pair a QB, who is probably the best quarterback in NFL history to be able to avoid injury, with Shanahan?
Gonna drop him down to the average baby!
I don't know how well that would work -- a 7 pound 2 oz, 20 inch Brady with teeny tiny baby hands probably can't throw a football very well
Perfect situation. You tell Brock he's the future but he has to heal up and learn from master Brady... The commitment is further cemented by trading Lance.
Honestly? Yeah.
Lance gets traded to titans per something I saw earlier lol. I don’t really like it tho
Not very realistic. Keeping Lance and Purdy means the 49ers pay them both ~10 million. Lance has a dead cap of ~20MM next year though, so trading him doesn't make much sense, not in 2023 at least.
Who would win, Brady’s longevity or the 49ers QB injury curse?
Plot twist, Brady put the curse on the 9ers until he gets the spot
Ah the old Voldemort-a-roo.
And I’m just gonna say it, we should go for Brady. At least check on the price tag for like a 1 year deal.
If you offer him 1y/$25m he probably agrees. He made $33m APY in Tampa.
That wont work. We would need a major hometown discount. Probably multi void years.
You can easily decrease the cap hit of a $25m deal to $6-7m with enough void years. Considering how cheap Purdy is, it shouldn't have any long-term negative effects for the Niners.
Idk why it's funny to me that a Tampa fan is talking a 49ers fan into signing Brady
Brady doesn’t owe the Bucs anything and if he wants to play another season it should be what works best for him. He got us a ring, so Godspeed Mr. GOAT.

The only condition that I see Brady forcing is not to be benched him in any condition.
It's his dream team that he grew up watching. His dad would take him to 9ers games as a kid. He has always been very public he wanted to take snaps in red & gold

"Hey, Tom. 1 year, 1 more ring, $10mil-$15mil. What do you say?"
I mean, I think you guys should consider Brady
We absolutely should if the front office isn't virtually certain that Purdy will be ready by training camp.
And honestly the front office should consider carrying 3 qbs on the roster. We’ve had atrocious luck with qb injuries with 4 just this season alone.

Yup, as I've said elsewhere, we just couldn't keep pulling miracles out of our ass and it showed in that last game.
It really does for him too because he only is guaranteed 77k on his contract and that’s it. hopefully he can get some nice advertising deals this offseason
Chapstick. Invisalign. Get yourself a purdy mouth.
He could probably replace Mantis Tobbogan M.D. as the spokesman of Magnums.
Pitchers can comeback full strength from tommy John. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. Hopefully he can make a full recovery and return to form.
> Pitchers can comeback full strength from tommy John. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. *Purdy calls up Verlander*
I'd be pretty angry at life if I were him.
I'm not him and I'm pretty angry at life rn
With the luck that team has at QB they’ll finally get Tom Brady and he’ll actually look like a 46 year old that needs to retire
With the weapons on the team we just need him to be able to throw it 15-20 yards, he can do the old busted arm Peyton Manning thing and just be smart.
Brady is also the best short throwing QB of all time, he's perfect for that offense
They would be literally unstoppable. A healthy 49ers with TB throwing, I can’t think of a team right now that could beat that, except maybe the two teams about to play in the Super Bowl, would be a good game lol
Yeah this would be the perfect gig for Brady. We already know he’s as good mentally as anyone ever. Just do that and you’re good.
Literally all Kyle would have to do is run the Jimmy offense. Most of the boot legs showed up when Purdy took over. Brady could run the <2.5 second passing offense with ease. Then they can just tell Purdy to get TJ and take a full recovery while Brady runs the show in 2023.

On the other end of the spectrum is Mahomes, who runs around for an eternity and then somehow throws it 50 yards down the field for a touchdown.
Yeah I thought that wad just Tyreek Hill being ridiculous but here we are
Same. But I also gotta give some credit to Kelce because the dude is out there with some wr2s and still playing like a wr1.
I’d argue he’s better mentally than everyone ever. He’s the best. He’s like the “Tom Brady” of the mental side of QB play.

Bradys still got a hell of an arm, obviously he's a statue at this point but he can still wing it 40 yards and him with CMC would be unfair
I mean, Steve Young walked so Tua could run…. He just played in an era where teams would ask you to rub some dirt on your brain and get back out there
I hear that dirt bacteria is good for solving CTE, so maybe the NFL's spiritual guides going back millennia were on to something?
Take it easy, Aaron.
Still remember seeing Steve Young get KO'd on Monday Night Football like I watched it last night.
My guy it’s been this way since 86
That was the year we got Young right? Idk man at least then it was 2 HoF guys
I misspoke, it was 1987, but point still stands
It was volatile *during* the Kaepernick days.
Remembering the great Kaep v Smith debate during that time, was definitely a spicy time at that position
And he still attempted a few throws. Complete respect for him
That's real, "Back in my day I threw for tds with a broke arm" energy. Rough ending for one of the great stories of this year. I hope he can fully recover from this, but I don't know enough about UCL injuries.
Man I pinched my ulnar nerve for a little and shit sucked, can’t imagine tearing the UCL.
Your first mistake was going to a chiropractor.
people COMPLETELY discount what a massage therapist can do. I have spondylosis and my LMT wife gave me a massage 2 years ago... haven't needed one for that condition since. now I'll ask for one if I just need to chillax.
Well you went to a chiropractor… you needed a physical therapist.

In the game thread here too
despite everything else that was happening yesterday that shit was probably the most maddening thing to see edit: [and I did call it out](https://reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/10og67k/_/j6err7z/?context=1)
That’s what probably tore it completely, might’ve had a partial tear prior to the attempts.
yeah it’s fucked up putting him back out there and potentially career ruining. i get the competitiveness, but purdy should’ve refused to go out. he literally couldn’t throw anyway. i would’ve preferred to see a maccffrey run offense - the D already knew they were gonna just run the ball anyway
So free agent Jimmy G, broken ankle Lance and no elbow Purdy. Brady come on down?
I’m all for it just for the irony of it all. Imagine signing a 46-year old quarterback because you need someone who is not an injury risk. Fuck it. Let's sign Brady and trade for Rodgers just to back him up so we have two first ballot hall of fame QBs knowing our injury luck.
But that's only 4 QB's with Jimmy G leaving... Or did you mean to sign him too? Because then that's 5 QB's and then you can really start working on building depth now.
If baseball can have five starters in charge of throwing the ball then football should too
Then after the starting rotation of QBs is built, we can focus on the bullpen and sign more QBs
Trade for Rodgers as the 3rd quarter set up guy, then sign Brady as the closer. They can even have the entrance music as he enters the game in the 4th quarter
Trade with Dallas for Ezekiel Elliott and play him at center. He has a 100% success rate in preventing qb sacks when he is in at center.
He's never caused a fumble either. GOAT center.
Does Zeke have any offensive holding penalties?
Knowing your injury luck, they're both on ventilators by Thanksgiving.
*cuts to NFC championship game in which now 6th string QB Josh Johnson enters the game due to injuries*
All roads lead to Josh
At this point, one final season for Brady. Jimmy G walks, the others will heal up and Brady goes off into the sunset with his hometown team.
My body is ready....
This just shows how Brady’s best asset is his availability
Yup, at this point why not? Maybe Brady will break the curse of this team.
Setting up pretty nicely isn’t it? Easily his best chance at another ring anyway
Only good news outta this completely shit situation is that Brady may now have a chance to finally have his storybook ending. I hope he convinces Gronk to also join him. He'd have a ridiculous amount of weapons to work with and a loaded defense.
Gronk, Kittle, CMC, Deebo, Aiyuk is unfair. The two top blocking TEs
inb4 Kittle is arrested on murder charges 💀
Juice as well. And for 5 games a year Elijah Mitchell too.

I feel like a poor person listening to a rich person complaining about not having enough money rn
He did say he was irrationally angry
Almost guaranteed to retire if he won a SB with the niners. Just walk off into the sunset in a niners uniform with the Lombardi
I feel like he’s cemented a positive legacy (in an unfortunate way) He will either return to being stellar, or be a what-if story: Mr Irrelevant who was looking amazing until injury derailed his career.
ESPN writers already furiously planning the 30 for 30
30 for Purdy

Bunch of clowns yesterday saying he should have just played through it. I admire him for trying, but I hope those people think twice next time before they act tough.
Turns out he was so tough people called him soft when he couldn't do more, assuming no way he's out there with a torn damn elbow.
I mean he did play through it, to the extent that he could Sounds like he literally couldn’t throw it more than 5 yards
I remember when everyone thought Josh Allen had a torn UCL despite being able to throw a 60 yard pass. That shit is not possible with a torn UCL. It’s like trying to perform an olympic high jump with a ruptured Achilles.
Those people apparently don’t understand why having feeling in one’s hand is important for gripping/throwing a football so I doubt they do much thinking at all
I think a lot of people were wondering, myself included, why they didn’t just put someone in at qb who could physically throw a ball
Because even with the backup in they were having trouble communicating and executing plays. A huge part of the QBs job is knowing what the fuck is going on, and making good decisions. You can't just throw a random guy in there and ask them to run plays they haven't practiced and explain them each in 10 seconds in a loud environment...

He didn’t even try and throw lefty, pathetic effort /s
Shout out the dude for going back out there and even attempting passes, short they may have been. Must've hurt like hell
Dude is tough as hell for sure. I hope he didn't damage it further by heading back into the game. Purdy was one of the best stories this year.
Seriously. Massive respect to his grit in trying to get something done after the injury. Hope he has a 100% recovery.
~~I dont think it hurt. He literally had no feeling there.~~ Edit: he said it hurt
He said it hurt
Oh shit i stand corrected
It sends shocks up your arm from the nerve issues...so yeah it probably hurt like hell
It would have been such a bad look for him once they brought him back out to play if he started throwing the ball like normal. But once it was clear they were pretty much just gonna run the ball except for like two 3-yard attempts, then it was pretty evident that his arm was fucked. Especially given the magnitude of the situation.
The 49ers really can’t catch a fucking break. I hope he comes back better than ever.
And here I thought we were done with another offseason of QB controversy
What controversy? Lance is coming off of a broken ankle with only a handful of NFL games under his belt. Purdy won’t be around for training camp at best. Jimmy is moving on. We need to find a guy.
That’s the controversy. You’ve got to pick from a whole slew of free agents, plus re-sign your other guys that are up.
They need to sign about 9 QBs to make it through next season
Didn’t he technically complete one pass (screen) after going back in? Dude legit completed a playoff pass with a complete UCL tear and I get winded walking up the stairs….
He completed 2 passes after the tear. Both screens
2/2 right? His legend lives on
yeah but there was no zip to it, it was like his arm was a noodle. which is still fucking impressive with a torn ucl.
The second went 4 or so yards in the air and had serious dip before it even made it that far.
IIRC you can't even turn a doorknob without a UCL. Definitely impressive.
Damm that sucks for him somewhat impressive he went back out even if he couldn't throw maybe some of the more obnoxious people will stop saying he is weak for not "playing through" his injury now.
Ugh that completely blows. Hopefully he can play next season. What a shitty way to end an amazing debut.
I’m just gonna say fuck you to everyone who called this man soft for not staying in the game
There are a lot of dumb ass people on the internet who get way too much attention. The same people who probably wanted Lamar to put a brace on and go play as well.
Hate this for the 49ers and their fans but most importantly I hate this for Brock and his family.
No Tommy John but will spark a lot of rumors about Tommy Brady.
The light has gone out of my life
Appropriate considering Teddy's contribution to the forward pass.
Never forget the people who called him soft yesterday
Never *forgive
Eagles knew he couldn’t throw past 5 yards. Just stack the box because the run is the only way they can beat you. People act like the Eagles would have stopped stacking the box if Purdy toughed it out. Respect to him for going out there even if he knew he couldn’t do much.
How many other NFL QBs have had the surgery for this before?
It's very common for baseball pitchers but if he needs a reconstruction it's a long recovery.

No me first
We're to the point people can agree Shanahan made some voodoo doctor mad at some point right? Seriously the worst QB health luck for a team I have ever seen in My life.
All 3 QB’s got season ending injuries. That’s insane.
And the fourth got injured after like 10 plays. It's wild when a team can say, well if our fourth qb didn't go on IR we could've made the super bowl. Edited to say could've instead of would've
Idt Johnson wins the game, his Fumble was the turning point.
Yeah true, but would've been better then an offense literally unable to pass a ball accurately more then 5 yards.
Brock Purdy is a fuckin g.
*and he went BACK IN THE GAME* Jesus fucking Christ
I had a feeling this was the case. Hopefully he's healthy by September. Dude played so amazing down the stretch I want to believe.
Fuck all those assholes calling him soft and saying "he doesn't have that dog in him like Mahomes" what a bunch of dickheads
It's time to come home Tom. Only the Brady simulation reality can overcome the curse. Brutal for Purdy, fucking sucks.
The fans in the game thread saying he quit on his team can get fucked.
Gotta feel for the guy. That could totally derail his career. It’s not like he’s going to get the benefit of the doubt like a first round pick.
WHAT THE F*** This is just wrong. Damn you, football gods.
People comparing this to Cutler or calling him a bitch should feel like shit.
The people who called Cutler a bitch (for getting injured in the NFC championship game) should feel like shit.
I hate the world.
