You don't want to try another passing play and have the opposing team get an interception and touchdown. Kneeling is the smartest move because it ends the game and you don't risk losing.
Taking a knee runs out 40 seconds off the clock, so a team can take 2 minutes off the clock by taking 3 knees in a row, if the other team doesn't have any time outs.
