I’m convinced that McDermott got overcome by the narrative.
Hamlin was going to pick up the 1st and the bills were going to go on to finally knock off the Chiefs and then win the SB and it would be because of the guy who almost died on the field and the HC who had the balls to call the fake. There would be movies made about this moment!
The storyline was too much to pass up. So McDermott threw caution and logic to the wind.
And this sub is very results-oriented. If they got the 1st by some miracle this sub would be worshipping McDermott even though it was just a bad call to begin with.
Same thing with Dan Campbell. His aggressive plays that go well get lauded as though the analytics say he made the right call, but if they don't get the 1st he's an idiot.
No. That’s stupid as fuck, nobody except redditors like you are thinking about narratives this much during a live game. Occam’s Razor it instead of making up conspiracy theories that you can’t back up.
Chiefs had 10 men on the field, it was likely an automatic audible by special teams in response, and Hamlin happened to be the gunner on the side with less guys. Hamlin kind of fucked it up by being jittery as fuck, the Chiefs read it well, a Chiefs player fought through 3 blocks, and it was a bad idea in the first place given the field position and time left. McDermott deserves real, actual football criticism for letting an audible like that happen, not for thinking he’s living in a Disney movie.
> Chiefs had 10 men on the field, it was likely an automatic audible by special teams in response, and Hamlin happened to be the gunner on the side with less guys.
Ehhh… this sounds right and logical but is actually wrong on the facts.
First of all, Bills came out in an unusual punting formation with 3 “up backs” in the backfield. Hamlin wasn’t the “gunner” on this play, he was the middle man in the backfield flanked by one player on both sides of him.
Bills didn’t audible into this formation, they just came out this way, which indicates they probably wanted to run the fake punt regardless. (I believe McDermott actually said after the game that it was his call to run this fake because he wanted to be “aggressive”.) In this formation, the play can be run in either direction because Hamlin has the same # of blockers on either side. Additionally, it seems that Hamlin was the DESIGNED ball carrier on this play, he didn’t just “happen” to get the ball. Even if the run went to the other direction, he was still going to be carrying the ball.
Now, I’m not saying McDermott did it for the “narrative” or the future movie plot line or whatever, but the facts are that it most likely was a called fake punt from the get go (not an audible), and that based on the formation it’s very likely Damar Hamlin was ALWAYS supposed to get the ball on this play regardless of the defensive alignment.
Really seems to me based on the formation and McDermott’s post game comments that they were going to run this fake punt as long as Chiefs had their regular punt return team on the field. Chiefs only having 10 players just ended up being a “red herring” that didn’t affect anything, strangely enough.
They did the fake because our punter was still clearly injured.
They called the play, hoping the chiefs wouldn't expect it at that down/distance at that dangerous yard line. Unfortunately, I'm sure the injury to the punter made the chiefs acutely aware to look for signs of a fake.
Didn’t look like anyone on the Chiefs was fooled for even a second.
That said, if it were 4th and 2 I think it’s justifiable. 4th and 5… I think it’s pure insanity. 5 yards is a looonnnnggggg way to go for that play, even if you do fool them.
Sometimes, if the NBA all star game is close at the end, they’ll start trying, which makes for an enjoyable 5-10 minutes of content, which is more than I can say for the pro bowl
The year Kobe died, I remember they had a format where they were playing to a certain score, I believe with no time limit. That got pretty intense towards the end, tho admittedly I dont know if they've kept a similar format since
Yeah I enjoyed that format. They took the score of the winning team at the end of the 3rd quarter, added 24 to that, and made it the goal amount. Whoever hit that amount first won.
Love the idea of an All-Star game always ending with a game winning shot.
NBA skills challenge can be fun to watch, with some amazing athletes in the 90's it was awesome watching the slam dunk and 3 pointers with Jordan, Bird, Barkley, Robinson and Olajuwon.
I can kind of get behind a no-defense, all-shoot-around NBA All-Star game, to be honest it’s not much different from the real thing. This? It’s a mockery to the game of football.
Yes, it is. Defense is on display every game in the NBA. It's just so hard to play effective nowadays with supercharged offensive skill and schemes. That's like saying defenders in the league don't try this era because the refs putboth their hands behind their backs and offenses are so potent.
Shit take is what it is. This is why I hate when football dudes try to talk about hoops. It’s like, my guy you don’t know ball, stop trying to sound like you do parroting these lazy angry boomer tabloid takes
Offense and spacing are at an all time high. You also probably think college basketball has better defense when in reality offenses aren’t even good enough to beat a zone.
defense has been punished by officiating for the benefit of offense. shooting percentages haven't had a huge increase and pace has stayed roughly the same. this isn't about offense just being too good to be stopped
I'm fully aware college is full of worse offense and worse players generally so it has lower scoring games
There's a difference between defense being placed at a disadvantage by the rules and suggesting players aren't trying... all-star game is not trying; regular season is offense being too good.
you'll notice I didn't say "players aren't trying" though if you want to go down that lane, yes they aren't trying to their full ability during the regular season. see, how defensive effort increases during the playoffs. but I don't think that's some mark against players as it's not like defense is being encouraged for most teams by the coaches or front office either. everyone keeps it in the tank for the playoffs which is why the in season tournament was even introduced
Your statement is a joke lmao the NBA All Star game is so far ahead of the Pro Bowl in terms of enjoyment that it's not even funny. Watching the Globetrotters has always been fun regardless and the all Star game is that but with more recognizable names and the winner isn't determined so it can get interesting at the end. That's wayyyyy better than whatever the fuck the Pro Bowl is
Yeah, also like with hockey and baseball. There’s a pickup culture around those 3 sports. There really isn’t one with football that is severely limiting the rules of the game. The only difference with baseball is that you’re probably throwing and hitting less hard than normal.
They’ve improved the all star game with the target score in the fourth quarter. The first three quarters are whatever, but it tightens up in the fourth.
The problem is that you can't replicate the intensity and violence of the game, without hurting someone. You cannot play with the same intensity, in football or hockey, in an exhibition game. It doesn't work.
MLB all-star game is so far ahead of any other US sport it's not even funny. The fact that injury in baseball is rare—it's really only due to the rigors of a long, 162 game season that players tend to get injured—helps, but also important is that they're actually playing for something: an extra home game for the winning league (AL or NL) in the World Series.
It was a terrible gimmick. Fun in theory but you’re putting HFA for your championship on the results of a single game that comes down to backup all stars, many of which won’t be competing in the playoffs.
I wouldn't say "back-up allstars". It's not like the NFL where everyone just opts out so you've got Minshew or Hundley as pro bowlers. Almost every allstar plays if they're available. And last year 17/20 starters _did_ compete in the playoffs.
That being said, I'm fine that it doesn't determine the WS home field.
I mean that gimmick was the sole reason I enjoyed watching the all star gam. The stakes was the fun part to me. Once they went away I haven't watched it since.
Yeah it's lame. The stakes made me definitely tune in. I have no interest in watching it. I lowkey slowed down on baseball when they made the NL have a DH. I like seeing pitchers actually try to hit a ball.
Also the fact that a baseball team doesn't really need to coordinate or gel with each other to be good. You can slap together a lineup of 9 mashers an hour before gametime, and they'll be the best baseball team you've ever seen.
Nah the NBA one has been okay since they changed the rules around. Teams will do showy shit in the first part and then start actually trying a little in the end.
I mean it did make the game exciting, but annoying to say have a 100+ wins and deserving of homefield throughout and losing that to some 86 win team that played in a mediocre division because your league lost the game that at best your players play three innings. Way too random for baseball with the season being as long as it is.
However the last year it was a thing was for the Cubs and Cleveland and Cleveland stealing homefield was a blessing in disguise, I don't think the Cubs win with them having homefield with how they played at home and with Schwarber being able to play more with the DH. Still glad it's out though.
Home field advantage is a small enough advantage in a 7 game series that if you need it to win as a 100+ win team playing an 86 win team, you deserve to lose the series.
you can really tell when it’s brought up today
it was hailed as one of the best plays in pro bowl history and was the epitome of what football was. big hits was like the main draw of the game
now people act like sean taylor was a murderer bc they’ve never known a pro bowl where guys actually try
The most memorable thing I can think of in that time is when the announcer called Keanu Neal "Keanu Reeves". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEvkl_iA-bM

2010 was the year you won the AFC West because the Chargers had the worst special teams of all time and the Raiders went 6-0 in division and 2-8 against everyone else lol
Unfortunately there's no good way to do the Pro Bowl game. Flag football is as good an idea as any. If some pro bowler tore up his knee getting tackled in an actual game, people would riot. Just say these players are Pro Bowlers and don't play at all.
Just move it back to Hawaii and go all in on mini games! Golf tournament, ping pong tournament, maybe some volleyball, expand on all the little challenges they have now, and let it just be a nice relaxing trip to reward the “best” (most popular) players in the league
I remember a couple games with the Mexican women's flag football team a year or two ago, only time I've watched flag football, but it was genuinely entertaining, much more entertaining than whatever tf this clip is.
I just watched a flag football game today. It was over in 30 minutes, there were like 6 or 8 possessions. A handful of really great throws and catches and a sweet INT. Went to overtime. Come from behind win for the Fury!! Pretty cool to be honest.
I just had to train my eyes to look at the flags rather than looking for a tackle.
I was thinking that watching the game today. Like what would they do if a guy tore his ACL or had a serious injury in the flag football game? I know it's unlikely because they're professional athletes basically doing nothing more than a light workout running in the field. But what if someone takes a bad step, they slop awkwardly or something and have a serious injury?
I almost feel like the broadcast/NFL would try to hide it. I'm trying to picture announcers saying stuff like, "Oh, you hate to see that." But I honestly think they'd pan the camera to someone else/go to break and come back and act like it never happened.
We honestly need to have the pros compete in real flag football games so that we are fully prepared to beat Papua New Guinea by 78 in the 2028 Olympics.
I know they're trying to pump up NFL players to go, but I honestly think regular flag football players are more likely to take this seriously. I think an NFL player would only be slightly more motivated than they are at the Pro Bowl since there's a gold medal at stake.
I think this is how McDermott thought that fake punt to Damar Hamlin would go
This is hilarious even though at the time I was VERY angry
I’m convinced that McDermott got overcome by the narrative. McDermott was banking on the nfl helping him out via an inside job
He forgot that we already had the refs in pocket. The Ned stark of the nfl.
“I told you not to trust me.” - Chiefs fans with a football to McDermott’s throat
I’m glad the chiefs fans are at least self aware
The best thing you can do when you're in that position is accept the villain role. I'll take that all day as long as you're constantly winning.
You are wise sir! Chiefs fans have hit that plateau officially this postseason
Ok, but the Refs called, they didn't get your SB check.

It seemed like it was an audible made on the field because the Chiefs only had 10 guys out there, not something called in advance by McDermott.
It came from the sideline IIRC
Think it came from the sideline as a "if we got the look" type deal. It didn't help Hamlin got jittery and they couldn't block it worth a damn
No. That’s stupid as fuck, nobody except redditors like you are thinking about narratives this much during a live game. People who don't know ball still want to talk about ball. Sports is no fun without socializing about it. So the only thing they have is narratives.
McDermott tried to finish the story ^^tm He didnt see what happened to the last guy that tried to do that
Can you *smeeeeeeeeeeeeeell!*
bro really thought he was in a disney channel movie 💀
Shoulda let Damar kick the field goal.
😂😂😂😂 thought they’d be like “Oh shit! Respect brother, go get that first down 🫡”
I saw him walking around in the backfield just before the snap and knew I was about to have my day ruined
This seems more like what Jakobi Meyers thought his lateral to Mac Jones would go.
I see he unlocked his mind control special power to stop the defenders from rushing the passer or even trying to tackle him.
He put the team on his back doe
One of the hardest hitting safeties in the *leeeeague*
Unlocked limitless and the 6 eyes.
Bro had ultra instinct before it was even canon
On one hand, that’s probably the most memorable play from a Pro Bowl in the last 15 years lol. On the other it shows how much of a joke it is.
[удалено]
Might just be the peak of his career
Peak of his career was beating the Bills on 3 pass attempts with one completion.
We’re onto running.
Excuse me, it was TWO completions! And 44 elite handoffs.
He had a 2 minute drill game winning TD drive just this year against the Bills. That might be his actual career highlight.
If you didn’t watch his rookie season
Shithousery from BB
Might?! It definitely was. All went downhill from that point.

MLB all star game is the best, with Hockey coming in second. Basketball and football are jokes, though some of the NBA events around are interesting

Yep, the Elam Ending.
Not sometimes, this happens 3/4 years and its what makes bball asg great. Just turn it on 80 minutes late
The Elam ending was such a great idea for the all-star game.
The 2020 ASG was amazing
NBA skills challenge can be fun to watch, with some amazing athletes in the 90's it was awesome watching the slam dunk and 3 pointers with Jordan, Bird, Barkley, Robinson and Olajuwon.
Idk I like the NBA All-Star weekend. At least high scoring and crazy dunks are fun. With NFL it’s just dudes jogging around.
The weekend is fun, but the game itself is a joke until the 4th quarter.
And the entire pro bowl game was a joke so at least they have something going for the game itself.
I can kind of get behind a no-defense, all-shoot-around NBA All-Star game, to be honest it’s not much different from the real thing. This? It’s a mockery to the game of football.
>to be honest it’s not much different from the real thing. Lazy take
Is it though? Let's be real Q1-3, regular season perimeter defense looks a lot different than Q4 and playoff perimeter defense.
Yes, it is. Defense is on display every game in the NBA. It's just so hard to play effective nowadays with supercharged offensive skill and schemes. That's like saying defenders in the league don't try this era because the refs putboth their hands behind their backs and offenses are so potent.

Agreed..seeing what NBA players can actually do is incredible, they're easily the most superhuman of all the athletes from an aesthetics standpoint.
Yeah I think basketball is unquestionably the best sport to watch
Basketball is fun to watch besides the pauses every 10 seconds for a foul or free throw.
The ASG after Kobe died was legit amazing. The untimed 4th quarter dudes were trying extra hard
They’ve improved the all star game with the target score in the fourth quarter. The first three quarters are whatever, but it tightens up in the fourth.
There's no more Elam ending it's a regular East v West game this year

They got rid of the home field advantage rule a few years ago actually. But even without the rule the game has always meant more.
Oh wow, that's super lame :(
i think the extra home field game being determined by merit of ur regular season record is definitely better
Yeah it's lame. The stakes made me definitely tune in. I have no interest in watching it. I lowkey slowed down on baseball when they made the NL have a DH. I like seeing pitchers actually try to hit a ball.

MLB used to be better when it decided World Series home field advantage. Gave the game stakes without it being anything too insanely important.
I mean it did make the game exciting, but annoying to say have a 100+ wins and deserving of homefield throughout and losing that to some 86 win team that played in a mediocre division because your league lost the game that at best your players play three innings. D-Line just stands there. LOL
Finally a way for me to play in the NFL
I still say the worse team of the season should play the best team of the UFL or the Canadian league
The most memorable thing I can think of in that time is when the announcer called Keanu Neal "Keanu Reeves". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEvkl_iA-bM
Roman Harper buckling and unbuckling his chinstrap mid-play lmao
The only memorable play I can think of is from 2006 lol Sean taylor https://youtu.be/SC7Wx3zCiQo?si=yU9oers7a35gzX_2
The announcers are talking about him like he’s a cancer kid wtf.
He was a Browns player in 2010, so not too far off
You’re out of line but you’re right
Have you ever seen [this?](https://cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com/gray/ILQLRYQKEJANVAJLJYOISWZUFY.jpg) This guy's Halloween decoration every year is a Browns' QB graveyard. He updates it too!
Lol the random goose
[Unfortunately not that random.](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/did-johnny-manziel-ride-an-inflatable-swan-with-a-champagne-bottle/)
LOL that’s too funny
Love it. Baker escaped before it was too late. Thanks again Browns, Rams, and Panthers.
It's our genius helmet design
You either die a cancer kid, or live long enough to become one. .. Unless you die another way I guess...
I hope John Cena said hi to him after this
I mean he got coated with chemicals back when he was a teenage girl so close enough
TIL Matt Cassel got into a pro bowl as a Chief
Won a divisional title too
2008 Patriots made Matt Cassel a hot commodity.
He wasn’t a really bad QB ever, he just want ever going to be a consistent starter. He’s like a top tier backup or low end starter. A teddy bridgewater if you will.
And dude didn't have to play in any meaningful games for years. Got drafted as a usc backup. Best career ever imo
I will never forgive you
It's so funny that he took a team that went undefeated, went 11-5 and missed the playoffs and got a nice gig out of it.
With Todd Haley as a head coach. Truly an achievement
I could be wrong but I think this is the year we sent seven probowlers and had a terrible record
2010 was the year you won the AFC West because the Chargers had the worst special teams of all time and the Raiders went 6-0 in division and 2-8 against everyone else lol
Oh God even weirder of a year
The good old days when players really tried
There's as much hugging here as a family reunion
Wow, I see why people don’t like that they are changing how the pro bowl works. What a sick historic play.
I remember this play. This play is the one that made me never wanna watch the Pro Bowl again. What was the point? Hahaha
Unfortunately there's no good way to do the Pro Bowl game. Flag football is as good an idea as any. If some pro bowler tore up his knee getting tackled in an actual game, people would riot. Just say these players are Pro Bowlers and don't play at all.

Sean Taylor sent poor Brian Moorman to the shadow realm a few years earlier. Might be why
Love to see it
Future Browns great Dwayne Bowe also making an appearance
Steelers great too
Was that Chase Young out there?
Bruh…
#BIG MAN TD
You always love to see it
It's the ass crack that really makes it.
This is like watching one of those videos where a high school team is up 72-0 and they let the losing teams’ down syndrome kid score a touchdown.
Ah yes, Chiefs pro bowler Matt Cassell. We have a come a long way
To be fair, this is the 4th quarter with 16 seconds left. They're playing prevent defense.
Prevent injury defense
Y'all realize I was joking, right? I'm taking the downvote a bit personal.
I'll get ya back up to zero, buddy
Thank you for this. It helps me resolve any pang of nostalgia that there is no game anymore. Jesus what a mess.
Oh to be apart of his secret world that day
I understood that reference
Man I don't think I've ever seen such a half-assed tackle attempt from a Saints safety on an end of game miracle play like this one.
I'm disappointed this post ain't about a girl who fell in some goop and got super powers.
what happened to the game I love
Casual Cal Football fans thinking back to 2010 remember Beast Quake. Real Cal Football fans remember this
“Oh here we go boys… this is gonna be good” *proceeds to be ass*
>proceeds to be ass Yeah, but only about half of it as he got up from that dive.
Well… this clip made me remember why tuning in today would be a waste of my afternoon
I don’t need to watch the video to know he liquified into a puddle of goo and scored.
Mack Crack sighting
What a joke the Pro Bowl is.
you can't blame players not wanting to get hurt in a meaningless game for fun -- at least it's officially flag football now
I’ve never watched a pro bowl. Holy shit. Why do they even do this? People act like the nba all star game is bad. This is a 1000 times worse
I remember something similar happening with fletcher cox a while back
This is what football would look like if they played defense like the NBA plays defense.
I remember this play, specifically because it showed how pointless the pro bowl was.
Roman Harper getting trucked like that giving me PTSD of the Vernon Davis late 49ers TD 🤦🏽♂️
Wait, Matt Cassel was in the pro bowl? Why do I not remember that?
I’d rather watch high school football
He ran over Darren Sharper to get it. ONE OF THE HARDEST HITTIN SAFETIES IN DA LEAGUE!
No wonder the ratings were shit, these guys can’t even pretend to care
Dwayne Bowe ruined my fantasy team for 2 seasons
This is why we have the pro bowl games now🙄
The Pro Bowl was so embarrassing to watch. No attempt to tackle.
Who finds this even remotely entertaining?
I’d complain, but it’s the Pro Bowl no one gives a shit.
Sean Taylor would have lit Dwayne Bowe up coming across the middle.
He laid out a punter in the pro bowl. He absolutely would’ve played full speed still.
Matt Cassel was a pro bowler?!?
Was that Matt Cassel at QB?
Let this video of Matr Cassel throwing to Dwayne Bowe remind you what we Chiefs fans endured
Take me back to the good ol days
I thought "wait... Alex Smith never wore 7.... holy *shieet* that Matt Cassel"
do people actually pay to watch this lol
The pro bowl was fun in the late 90's-00's
