Hutch, McNeill, Reader, and Davenport for the 3 games before Davenport gets injured is literally 100x better than what we had last year. Plus whoever we add in the draft and guys like Paschal and Houston hopefully staying healthy this time.
I'm so excited.
The Caldwell/Mayhew ( I think?) years were solid. Guys like Reggie bush, Rashean Mathis, glover Quin, Kyle Vandenbosch helped lions to a string of winning seasons in the mid 2010s
We almost never give out 3rd contracts especially once a player is 30. That plus the quad probably encouraged the staff to move on.
Huge loss, obviously. Hopefully we can find a rookie to help fill the gap (pun intended).
I don’t think this factors in too much tbh…if anything, Chase’s fifth year option cap hit next year of roughly $21 million might even get lowered on the extension. I suspect the Bengals just weren’t comfortable with where DJ would be at this year at his age and with the injury, for better or worse.Â
His play had fallen off some last year, & then he had the injury that he might not come back from at the same level. I don't think we wanted him back that bad.
Bengals signed a DT of the same age with an equally long history of injuries a day or two ago.
I suspect they wanted Reader back. But he wasn't going to take a paycut and they moved on.
The difference is Reader is currently injured Rankins is not. Rankins should look more or less like himself week one this coming season. I don't think it's very likely that Reader is even on the field Week 1. A second torn quad at 29 going on 30 as a large man is not easy to come back from.
Also reader and Rankins play different positions. Reader is a run stopping NT and Rankins is a pass rush focused 3T.
They wanted a 1 year prove it style deal thinking there wouldn’t be many suitors not knowing if he’d pass a physical, turns out the DT market exploded, he still had a market even still not being able to start the first few weeks / months of the season, so he went went with the guaranteed money deal and we ended spending more than we wanted to on another DT. But the guy we signed is supposed to be more of a Larry Ogunjobi replacement not a run stuffer, which makes getting a NT all the more important for our defensive front
I’m just glad the lions aren’t trying to act like the A’s in moneyball and refuse to spend the cash because they think they can get more for less
Don’t need to blow all the money cannons, but sometimes it’s worth using one or two to shore some stuff up
Sure, I was just using as an example to completely pass up on an expensive add even if the resources all equal out
Really wonder what we will use pick 29 for
I tore my quad and was back mashing on my beer league softball team in like 6 weeks. Honestly though it is a freaky injury. I have a permanent fist sized dent in my left quad.

He was a real good dude.
Remember you guys are playing us again this year though and this means potentially facing him (assuming he's healthy and back to his usual level after the injury)
LFG. let’s draft another DE opposite Hutch. this is such a NT upgrade over the mess we had with Benito Jones and Buggs. allows McNeil to be really unleashed.
We don’t tend to resign guys over 30 coming off major injuries. We could have afforded him but decided to go in a different direction - probably draft a replacement. Best of luck to reader. Hope he can make a successful comeback this year.
Ignoring any potential restructures or cap casualties, we really only have about $13m left.
Seems they're targeting depth and we still have rumored deals/visits with bechton and tart.
There’s very few players in all the time I’ve watched football that I’ve liked more than DJ Reader. Really great dude and it doesn’t hurt that he’s a solid player. I wish we never let him walk to Cincy but I’m happy teams around the league value him.
I don’t think they’re in the market for a DT? I think they need a wr after losing Ridley trying to get out of sending the falcons that second round pick.
Just posted minutes ago that Jacksonville is closing in on Armstead.
Which, if it happens, I'm assume he is getting paid big time. I thought Armstead was heading to Houston.
No, they are wrong. He tore the left previously then tore the right this [season.](https://theathletic.com/5196799/2024/01/12/dj-reader-bengals-free-agency-quad-injury/)
Rankins is a pass rush guy, more of an Ogunjobi replacement. Hopefully the Bengals will be able to lock down Tart as their Reader replacement. Tart would be a downgrade, but hopefully they can hit DT in their first few draft picks.

Plus Robertson and CD3 instead of an UDFA and a practice squad cast-off...
And hopefully a healthy Moseley
I almost cried when he tore his other ACL in his first game back. Poor guy is probably dying to play
I wish we could have seen last year's team without cjgj and moseley hurt all year. Props to Jerry Jacobs for trying at least
You forgot to mention Koolaid👀
I legit hope lions get koolaid or sanistrill
Sanistrill unfortunately doesn’t really fit on the field unless we move Branch to safety
Let’s not forget about James Houston. His injury made him a passing thought this year but he was a beast as a rookie
Don’t like that
:(Â
Davenports problem is that hes injured constantly and when hes not injured he still doesnt do shit.
IM ABOUT TO BUSSSSS
No no we can leave bussing in the past. I am, however, about to unload an absolute nut.
Maybe even a Mega Nut
Crazy seeing this franchise not fuck around anymore
Ehhh we’ve signed big name FAs before
Not while there's a true vision in place though.
The Patriot Wayâ„¢ was a true vision, it was just a shit one that was bungled by clowns.
It was a mud hut ayahuasca vision
The electric elves would never steer you wrong like QuinnTricia
The Caldwell/Mayhew ( I think?) years were solid. Guys like Reggie bush, Rashean Mathis, glover Quin, Kyle Vandenbosch helped lions to a string of winning seasons in the mid 2010s
The difference is now we sign the guys we want, not just overpay anyone actually dumb enough to sign
I'm more giddy than that one player who said he was giddy today. Forgot who.
brian burns
I’m straight up having a good time

Alim + Reader instead of Alim + a pumpkin is gonna be terrifying
The Bengals could have afforded this, no? And it's only ~$9m guaranteed
We almost never give out 3rd contracts especially once a player is 30. That plus the quad probably encouraged the staff to move on. Huge loss, obviously. Hopefully we can find a rookie to help fill the gap (pun intended).
I’m thinking a Chase extension is coming really soon
I don’t think this factors in too much tbh…if anything, Chase’s fifth year option cap hit next year of roughly $21 million might even get lowered on the extension. I suspect the Bengals just weren’t comfortable with where DJ would be at this year at his age and with the injury, for better or worse.Â
If we had ANY depth, I’d say yes. But that’s a lot of money to pay to still be starting Josh Tupou in week 1.
Josh Tupou is a free agent still....
His play had fallen off some last year, & then he had the injury that he might not come back from at the same level. I don't think we wanted him back that bad.

Point is, they both come at a significant risk, at the same age, with similar contracts.
not the same risk, different positions, hes not currently injured, what are you not getting?
They wanted a 1 year prove it style deal thinking there wouldn’t be many suitors not knowing if he’d pass a physical, turns out the DT market exploded, he still had a market even still not being able to start the first few weeks / months of the season, so he went went with the guaranteed money deal and we ended spending more than we wanted to on another DT. If sweat is there at 49 it might be a match made in heaven
Big Man Big Money
I’m just glad the lions aren’t trying to act like the A’s in moneyball and refuse to spend the cash because they think they can get more for less Don’t need to blow all the money cannons, but sometimes it’s worth using one or two to shore some stuff up
There is no cap in baseball and we assume that Brad's draft priority is getting the right guy for them and not position of need
Sure, I was just using as an example to completely pass up on an expensive add even if the resources all equal out Really wonder what we will use pick 29 for
I'm hoping edge, db, or IOL. Whichever of the 3 of those has the BPA at 29 plz.
We considering the cap floor is 90% of the cap ceiling you… can’tÂ
Darn. Hope he fully recovers and crushes it for y'all, catbros.
Yeah, quad is a scary injury for a man his size, but it's not a huge commitment and the upside for our defense is massive.
I tore my quad and was back mashing on my beer league softball team in like 6 weeks. Honestly though it is a freaky injury. I have a permanent fist sized dent in my left quad.
He tore his quad tendon. It’s a much more severe injury than a standard muscle tear
And this is the second time he has torn one. Once on the left, once on the right.
That means they cancel out, right?
Can’t have a bad leg when they are both bad legs. That’s some 4D chess right there.
He only has two quads, he's torn them all. He good
Ok but you’re a legend
Been a pretty good day I'd say
Got our best GM and head coach maybe ever and signed the premier defensive tackle on the market. Alexa play ice cubes today was a good day.

Thank fuck this guy is out of the AFC North
AFCN --> NFCN. He's gotta stay in the north somehow
DJ, what was your biggest takeaway after watching the new Dune film?
"Glad he's out of our division" comments from the nastiest division about a dude we just signed. I'm bricked up.
Remember you guys are playing us again this year though and this means potentially facing him (assuming he's healthy and back to his usual level after the injury)

Good bye you big beautiful man. Thanks for everything and good luck DJ.
Let's goooooooo!!!!!
Shit that’s a good deal
Oh hell yeah! Team friendly deal too?? Past lions GMs would've handed the dude a 6 year top dollar contract lol
Damn good get for the Lions should he recover, he's a great run stopper.
We back baby we are sooo back
PUT THE WORD OUT LIONS 2024 NFC CHAMPS
That seems about right
Thought it said DJ Reed and almost fell to my knees. Congrats to this dude tho!
I am officially too blessed to be stressed ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
Cincy didn't want to match that? Don't they have a lot of cap space this year and next year anyway?
We don’t tend to resign guys over 30 coming off major injuries. We could have afforded him but decided to go in a different direction - probably draft a replacement. Best of luck to reader. Hope he can make a successful comeback this year.
I think the injury was a deciding factor as well. Hopefully DJ heals and kills it for Detroit but I understand the logic
Making a run, can't really afford to sink a ton of cap into a guy who's gonna miss half the season.
Well, the thing is I'm not sure there are that many more impactful free agents left for you to spend the glut of your cap space on.
Ignoring any potential restructures or cap casualties, we really only have about $13m left. Seems they're targeting depth and we still have rumored deals/visits with bechton and tart.

We should have signed him back
Big boi
Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't there several reports of them being interested in Armstead pre-DJ signing?
[удалено]
DJs are supposed to sign with the Panthers. I understand the confusion though since he landed on a cat team.
Gross
A DJ we didn’t sign? I DEMAND A RECOUNT!
should be our most **impactful** FA signing since Glover Quin.
Holmes saw the entire division getting new running backs and decided he needed to beef up the running lanes
Holmes saw the entire division getting new running backs and decided he needed to beef up the running lanes Pretty hype signing tbh
I have a feeling I know where Armstead goes
Jacksonville?

This also does not spark joy
Derek Henry liked this post
He re-tore the same quad in week 15 that he tore back in 2020. I wonder if he will be ready to go week 1.
Don’t think it was the same quad.
That's what they just said on ESPN radio.
No, they are wrong. He tore the left previously then tore the right this [season.](https://theathletic.com/5196799/2024/01/12/dj-reader-bengals-free-agency-quad-injury/)
Fake news ESPN radio.
Okay. I guess I was wrong.
Bengallssss what happeneddddd
He tore his quad
Again
Other quad
Going out sad
He's injured, no way to know if he's out for a few games or most of next season. Plus it's a major injury as he's turning 30.
Bengals just signed a 30-year old DT to a two year deal for a little more money. Despite his checkered injury history.
Our Front Office works in mysterious ways
Rankins is a pass rush guy, more of an Ogunjobi replacement. Hopefully the Bengals will be able to lock down Tart as their Reader replacement. Tart would be a downgrade, but hopefully they can hit DT in their first few draft picks.
