I can’t tell if some of you are being sarcastic or not, but Don Cherry had a massive career as a broadcaster in Canada. Might be the most famous TV personality in the country that has ever existed
We would get one broadcast that would carry a CBC game and Coach’s Corner was available. It blew my mind how popular that segment was in Canada. The suits, the bravado, the divisive French speakers stuff. He was something else. Ron tried to keep it respectable.
I can honestly say I never heard of him until I got with my Canadian husband. I do have to say that I love Grapes And really wish he was still on the hockey night in Canada broadcast.
Most famous and almost equally divisive. I infrequently agreed with him, but he was entertaining. He was the ‘curmudgeonly, bombastic grandfather you wouldn’t let use the tv remote’ I never had.
I will always remember his proclamation about how a European player will never captain a team to a Stanley Cup. Five or so years later, enter Nicolas Lidstrom. He was always entertaining though not always correct in his predictions.
I remember on one the old Rock em Sock em VHS tapes Don Cherry said, to prove I'm not prejudice, here's some Sergei Fedorov. Haha man watching those VHS on the way to hockey in the old camper van was epic.
Think that's the same year of "Here's Ray Bourque doing his Phil Bourque impression, Now here's Phil Bourque doing his Ray Bourque impresion. Phil's a good guy.' That Phil Bourque goal was pretty nice too.
Don has always been pro Canadian so much that he cant help but to crank on other hockey playing countries.
At the time except for Borje Salming all the European players were on the softer side.
I actually was not a Don Cherry fan initially. He eventually grew on me until I ended up respecting him and his take on hockey.
Don was a GREAT hockey personality for that time. Sometimes he overstretched his reach but he usually had a good reason.
He really should have been aloud to go out with a Big Bang. Lesser individuals that have done sweet f.a for their community and Country have gotten treated ALOT better.
Whether he meant to be or not, he's forever etched in Canes history! Thanks for the nickname, Donny boy!

That suit was fire, BTW!
He’s talked about it on his podcast a few times, as recently as a few weeks ago. He’s says “At least they could’ve sent me a T-shirt after all that dough they made” and laughs
I think a lot of the enforcers wouldn't have had a job if they didn't like fighting. In today's game, the once or twice a year someone fights pales in comparison to the old guys who's only job WAS to fight.
You ever listen to the interviews given by some of the enforcers from back in the day. Lot of them were terrified going into some games. It was not a role that a lot of them relished but it was the only way that they could stay in the NHL.
Once or twice a year? There are fights every week, hell I feel like there are MORE fights because guys gotta fight after throwing a clean hit nowadays before you actually had to do something dirty to get someone fighting you.
I meant an individual, not collectively. The enforcers of old used to fight quite often. Now our tough guys only fight a few times a year. Some still more than others I guess.
that's a sad but accurate point about retired enforcers. hockey was like alot of other sports that being injured put your commitment and your heart in question.it's definitely gotten better, especially with concussion protocol, but the damage was done to these guys. and i realize that goes for all sports, not just hockey.
Maybe I'm wrong because I haven't really listened to Don Cherry in a decade or more, but I don't think he wants guys fighting every single game but only when its necessary. You can say what you want about him, but acting like he's all in favor of games going back to bench clearing brawls of the 70s , I think is a bit silly. Maybe I'm wrong though, I don't know
I'm well aware being someone who lives in Canada, but like I said, I don't think he encouraged guys to fight in every game, but only when the time was appropriate. He always talked about how guys who could fight, would prevent fights because of their willingness to fight and punish anyone who would step over the line against a star player. That's why he brings up no one taking runs at Gretzky because of McSorely
Just watched the Keep Your Head Up Kid: The Don Cherry Story and absolutely loved it and learned a lot! For anyone who hasn’t seen it, it’s on Prime Video.
I found out only in the last year that it was Keeso, I saw it when it first aired on CBC (pvrd it) and years later became a Letter Kenny fan. When I realized it was him I immediately thought about the movie (absolutely loved it ) and was like Holly shit I can't believe I never put it together before. I attribute that to the fact that Kesso did such an incredible job that he was Don in my brain, for how many years we saw the clip of Grapes on the Bruins bench bowing to the Montreal fans Kesso hit it perfectly!
I’ve loved that Rempe is willing to go and earn his place in the league, but after last night when Olivier sat him down, all I was thinking was “does he really need to speedrun CTE to stay on the roster?”
Love the grit but wish he’d tone it down before he goes the way of Derek Boogaard.
If he wants to keep earning nhl $$, this is the career path he chose he could easily go do anything else with his life but he’s choosing to be an NHL enforcer who plays 5 minutes a night and fights the toughest guy on the other team
I have two of his books and recently collected almost all the rock ‘em’ sock ‘em movies only missing volumes 28 29 and 30. Miss coaches corner every Saturday.
He was getting up there when I was a kid. He proceeded to go into his "Old man yells at cloud" era. He started to just get detached from the way the game and the world was going. The "Bunch of Jerks" rant should have been HNIC's clue to pull the plug.
Then on a day where he probably should have focused solely on "Hey, support the people who serve. Don't take them for granted." He decided to direct it on minorities, accusing them of essentially freeloading and turn it into a message of hate. There, he left a stain on his legacy.
If only like 5-10 years before then he decided to hang up the mic as a full-time host, then he maybe would have ended with some "dignity." Have a big "Final Season" of Coach's Corner, have some nostalgic moments. Then at the end of the regular season, have him host both periods, with the second being his "Thank you." Then he'd be there for the playoffs and that's it. After that, he could host a podcast, or make sporadic appearances for special games.
He used to actually give *coaching* advice. Go here, do that, don't do that dumb play, learn these skills, here's an example of what does/doesn't work. Then he just started ranting about players and dumb shit.
totally agreed with this..... Don Cherry turned into Old Man Yells at Cloud.
The guy was awesome when I grew up.....he was funny and inciteful and his fashion was hilariois...... plus his love for old school hockey with big checks and fights is what true old school fans love...........however, his zenophobia schtick started to get lame.... probably by the 1990s. Then he started losing the plot in the late 2000s. He should have quit then.
But McLean threw him under the bus in 2019........ which I think is totally whack. At Least Don Cherry kept it real. Out of touch.... and lame.... but real. McLean is a pussy I can never respect.
I agree that McLean seemed unfazed during that fateful moment only to, in my opinion, throw Don under the bus when damage control mode kicked in.
Also found it touching how Don Cherry refused to say anything negative regarding Ron McLean and called him a true friend (I'm paraphrasing ...I don't remember the actual quote) when people pushed back on McLean following the incident.
Seemed each week he felt he had to top the previous week's controversial take. Eventually went too far. When we were young we couldn't wait to see what crazy he'd say on Coach's Corner. Then his last 10 years was sad seeing him try to hang on with his shit takes.
For different reasons, at this point in time, I’d say the same about Ron McLean. Guy misses the mark with his references on any young viewer by ~20 years. Brought up the Doug Gilmour trade this past Saturday and prefaced it with “and of course everyone remembers the Doug Gilmour trade…”
No, Ron, as an avid hockey viewer since the early 90’s I do not in fact remember every trade that’s happened across the league
So he’s not allowed to bring up events from the past that shaped the league that we see today? I was 3 when the trade happened, but as a leafs fan and someone who grew up watching Doug, I sure as hell know about the trade. Any any Calgary fan might start breaking things if you bring it up.
Ron may be a little old-Timey in his takes, but there are few people on the planet with more pure love and passion for the game than him. If some people under 30 don’t pick up on some of his references, so be it. No one’s turning off the game because of it.
There will always be a tug of war between people who like hockey and people who like stick-soccer-on-ice. Lawyers are neutering all the sports nowadays. Maybe I'm just a cranky old cunt but I liked hockey better back when every big hit wasn't automatically either a penalty or a brawl.
Agreed, people complaining about the lack of fighting is silly to me, there are lots of fights but they’re for stupid reasons like you said a big clean hit, you gotta fight now sorry can’t be doing that
I used to love it as a fan, but once I got to Junior i changed my mind. I had shoulder issues and specifically told a guy who wanted to fight me, *for the sake of getting in a fight because I did nothing to the guy*, that I had just popped my shoulder out and back in during the preceding play. It did not stop him from dropping his gloves and pounding on me while I couldn't defend myself as those who also have shoulder issues know that even once you pop your arm back in its often remains "heavy" and sometimes near impossible to lift. I had to take quite of few punches before linesmen even stopped it. What happened was assault, it was criminal, ... and nothing was done about it, i even got a penalty for having dropped just one of my gloves in the struggle not because I wanted to engage in a fight, my coach was even yelling that the fuckhead tore my glove away from me (which is how I felt about it too). That was the year I quit hockey and didn't play again until beer league at 29 years old. I have not been a fan of hockey fighting culture since - it should have not taken me getting beaten up, but it did, and my former view was absolutely because of Don Cherry type people who glamourize the bullshit.

"You people, you come here, you enjoy our milk and our honey and you won't tune in to watch these two talented kids beat the fuck out of each other".
Lest We Forget
I don't agree with all of his views but few people have been as prevalent in hockey or left their mark quite like Don Cherry. Hockey Night In Canada was something many Canadian's gathered around for decades. He's a hockey legend as far as I'm concerned.
I never get how people idolize a guy that won nothing, and spent most of his career in a studio. You guys just like angry old men that hate everything or something?
Definitely interesting how a pretty mediocre coach made a living off of brain damage and racism. Don Cherry is a fucking moron, racist dipshit.
Signed a commie, milk and honey enjoying, bike riding pinko lol
If you can excuse the racism, sexism and latent homophobia in his view of the game, his contribution to the proliferation of CTE alone is enough to make me happy he’s off TV.
The visor thing did it for me. Jeez, a guy wants to protect his eyeballs, which he will need for the rest of his life after hockey? What a wimp!
Bryan Berard should never happen again
I can’t wait till everyone wears full cages/ bowls. Get rid of them ridiculous “I been shot” high sticking reactions (well they can still do it, will just make them look goofy) , especially when it only hits the players visor and they are looking for the penalty.
I wore a visor playing beer league, saw a good friend lose 2 teeth from a stick, put the cage on and never regretted it.
Glad he’s gone. Don’t particularly miss his presence either. He’s a symbol of a bygone and dead era. Even being first exposed to his particular brand of hockey in the late 2000’s he seemed stuck in the 1980’s. It got worse and stood out more as time went on.
Seriously! His impact is still felt today in hockey culture for the worst. There’s constantly trolls in the PWHL youtube stream about how it’s not real hockey because there’s no fighting allowed.
Don’t even try with sexism, he was an avid supporter of women’s hockey. He even wore a rose on his lapel to honour his late wife Rose. Get your facts straight. It’s takes truly soft people to bash Grapes so hard. Good thing they promote the hell out of sports gambling on HNIC instead now. Also don’t forget he was a big advocate for our veterans, which people mistook as xenophobic.
>avid supporter of women’s hockey
Just not [women watching hockey in the arena](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRm_K9OpYbo&t=3s), evidently. Liking your wife doesn't make you a feminist.
where do you see him say women shouldnt be at the game? have you ever seen married with children? "what a wimp" was the perfect response to Ron the Cuck McLean then, and its the perfect response to Ron Benedict Arnold McLean now.
a joke doesnt make you a misogynist either.
youre soft, snowflake.
There's tons of clips of him calling Europeans "sissies", calling Russians "pinkos", saying women's hockey wasn't important, and of course the infamous "you come here, you take our jobs, wear a fucking poppy" rant that got him fired
Definitely interesting insofar as he was popular for losing the Bruins the Cup, and generally being an asshole about everyone not named Gordie or Bobby.
Fuck Don Cherry. Xenophobic scumbag. Quit dick riding this asshat. His hockey takes were trash. He couldn't accept the game left him behind a long time ago. All he did was yell his trash takes at the camera for 10 minutes while never letting Ron get a word in. Hockey is better without his input.
Hot take: Cherry isn't an interesting man at all. Nothing to do with his opinions, he's just not actually very interesting.
Born in Ontario, barely made the NHL (called up for 1 game), was a lifelong minor-leaguer, coached Boston for five good seasons then Colorado for one bad one, was hired as a color commentator but sucked at it and was dropped, then started Coach's Corner at which point he froze himself in time as a cranky grandpa figure and never changed again.
As a non-canadian, he was ridiculous and pointless. I remember watching coaches corner thinking, "why does everyone love this old bastard? He rabbles on not making any sense. Why do people care about Grandpa yelling at clouds? How is this on every week?"
Obviously, a lot of Canadians have a different view. But this was my opinion, someone from the outside looking in.
Oh, his suits were pure fire! Love the suits.
As a Canadian, I found him horrible for hockey culture. The amount of harm this man caused under the guise of Canadiana, nationalism and sports is awful.
Most people didn't. Or we're watching more like you would watch a car crash. Though old dudes loved him.
Some liked his old school xenophobic ideas and his straightforward view on hockey.
Eventually the networks reduced his airtime increasingly and he was never able to keep up with the snapper pace. That part was funny to me.
Check out the coaches corner transcribed videos on YT. Basically just Don cut to seem even crazier.
I stopped paying attention to Don Cherry a decade and a half ago. He's a big mouth, period.
He's one of those guys that is so outspoken with his opinions that when you agree with him, you want to just high five him, say thank you, and start buying him beers. But when you disagree with him, you want to pour that beer over his head and kick him in the nuts.
The problem is that he's wrong as often as he's right, if not more. Because once he makes up his mind on something, no amount of evidence will change it. And he's got blind spots the size of the Grand Canyon.
Grapes is obviously a controversial figure, I do not agree with everything he said over the years.
What I remember him best for is his tireless advocacy for player safety - I get that not everyone will see it this way because he was pro fighting, but remember that for most of his broadcast career we really did not know anything about CTE. I am only 35 - as a kid I had three probable concussions, one where I did not recognize my own father on the bench (I sat out two shifts then went back to playing). That’s just how we did it back then, so I do not fault Cherry for being pro fighting in that context.
I refer specifically to icing rules. I largely credit Don Cherry for bringing attention to how dangerous touch icing used to be and ultimately getting the rule changed.
He also regularly used his megaphone to talk about how dangerous and dirty hits from behind were.
I respect Grapes, and while it was probably past time for him to retire by the time it happened, I respect him.
I was studying abroad, so I was with a group of internationals and we were asked “if you could have one person who’d represent your country, who would it be?” The Canadian said Don Cherry emphatically. This was 2009
People don't understand that the rambling old man bit was for entertainment. I guess in today's age you can't say anything that isn't explicitly agreed upon by the unwashed masses. Grapes was just Hockey's night in Canada's Grandpa reminiscing about the olden days in front of everyone at Thanksgiving dinner. I miss him.
I couldn’t stand it when he would start going on about the Russians, Swedes and especially French Canadians. If he just talked hockey he was tolerable. But when he started mixing in his views on players who were non-Anglos that’s when he could go f’k himself.
My favorite Don Cherry story.
It's the 2013 NHL draft. Panthers are sitting pretty at number 2 with a plethora of big names on the board. Obviously MacKinnon was going to go 1st overall, there was no doubt about that there. But guys like Jonathan Drouin, Seth Jones, Darnell Nurse and Sean Monahan were available for us to grab. Especially Jones and Nurse, with the Panthers needing a legit defenseman.
Instead the Panthers opted to take a young Center from Finland at number 2. As you can imagine, Cherry went on one of his rants, lambasting us for not taking a good ole Canadian boy like Drouin or Nurse with our pick and opting to take a kid from and I quote "The Ice Follies."
That kid we took was Aleksander Barkov btw. Replace him with any of those guys above and this team is in the basement for another decade at minimum. Might even have been relocated. That's how legit Barkov has been for this franchise. Guys like Huberdeau, Ekblad, Tkachuk, Reinhart, Verhaeghe etc have been great for us. But Barkov is the true cornerstone for this franchise.
Probably the most negative influence in hockey of the last 30 years, unless you are a fan of dump and chase hockey and concussion, and hate European players.
One of the most widely overrated people ever. Crap hockey player and never coached a team to win a cup. the guy was such an absolute nobody that he made up the personality to get people to pay attention to him and overlook his non nhl mattering resume 🤣
Times change.
It's not the 80's or 90's anymore.
Not only in hockey, but in every sport.
Look at the NBA for example, that era was physical first and athleticism second.
Hockey is no difference.
Don Cherry is a dinosaur who can't deal with the fact the world has moved on.
And the nba's product now sucks because, as nba fans have said without the physical point, they feel not earned. Also, how many times does someone deserve to get beat up, and it doesn't happen, but in hockey, it does. One of the few places where you f around and find out
He was outdated in the early 90s. Listen to him talk about the Russian 5 back then. I'll be the first to say he got sacked for a soft reason, but I've found him insufferable for a long time.
Hate on him all you want, he comes from a different era. He’s literally 90 years old. These clowns want to cancel anyone who doesn’t toe the line.
I met him once when I was a kid after one of my games, and again in like ‘06 when I worked at a garden centre in Mississauga. He was super nice. We had a great chat while I helped him shop rose bushes for his wife, the guy is a gem.
I love that he’s introduced as former Bruin’s coach
Colorado Rockies head coach Don Cherry!
Mississauga IceDogs head coach Don Cherry!
Bench minor in the 90s and make your team out of the playoffs head coach
1979, coaching Boston vs Montreal, Game 7 of semi-finals, too many men call. He's had PTSD over that one ever since.
Hershey Bears Defenceman Donald Cherry?
“Former Bruins player”?
I can’t tell if some of you are being sarcastic or not, but Don Cherry had a massive career as a broadcaster in Canada. Might be the most famous TV personality in the country that has ever existed
And one NHL (playoff) game! I remember Coaches Corner fondly. And the yearly VHS tape. Wonder if he’s as well known in the US for his tv stuff?
Ya I assumed the yanks would have been aware of this fame when I commented, not sure tbh
We would get one broadcast that would carry a CBC game and Coach’s Corner was available. It blew my mind how popular that segment was in Canada. The suits, the bravado, the divisive French speakers stuff. He was something else. Ron tried to keep it respectable.

I will always remember his proclamation about how a European player will never captain a team to a Stanley Cup. Five or so years later, enter Nicolas Lidstrom. He was always entertaining though not always correct in his predictions.
In fairness he always held Lidstrom in high regard and he wasn’t the captain at the time.
I remember on one the old Rock em Sock em VHS tapes Don Cherry said, to prove I'm not prejudice, here's some Sergei Fedorov. Haha man watching those VHS on the way to hockey in the old camper van was epic.

“The only guys that wear those visors are Europeans and French guys.” He got a ten-second delay because of that one.
Why the fuck was he so mad about ppe? Like seriously.
He straight up admitted to being a nationalist. He’s no hero
He only said that because he’s a bigot.
He was a delusional crackpot and monumental asshat.

A lot of canes fans hated this but I'm sitting here like "he just made our franchise millions and gave us a shit ton of attention, this is great."
And u "bunch of jerks" won't even give him a t-shirt lol. He mentions it every time he talks about the canes on his podcast
We really should've invited him to a game against Boston or Toronto with him wearing a shirt lmao.
That would be awesome. I bet he'd show up 👍
Problem is he'd still cheer for Boston lol
That's no problem
He’s talked about it on his podcast a few times, as recently as a few weeks ago. He’s says “At least they could’ve sent me a T-shirt after all that dough they made” and laughs
“I KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT” Yes you do Grapes; you’re a beauty
I hope this is included in future Wikipedia versions of "old man yells at cloud"
LMAO he comes off as a salty lemon. Ron should've made fake crying noises while he was ranting lol
I think a lot of enforcers with health problems probably don't like fighting anymore.
Cause they dead? Sad, but true.

I just watched that and then Wrath of Grapes right after, loved it

Seemed each week he felt he had to top the previous week's controversial take. Eventually went too far. When we were young we couldn't wait to see what crazy he'd say on Coach's Corner. Then his last 10 years was sad seeing him try to hang on with his shit takes.
For different reasons, at this point in time, I’d say the same about Ron McLean. Guy misses the mark with his references on any young viewer by ~20 years. Brought up the Doug Gilmour trade this past Saturday and prefaced it with “and of course everyone remembers the Doug Gilmour trade…” No, Ron, as an avid hockey viewer since the early 90’s I do not in fact remember every trade that’s happened across the league
Fans are always on their feet, cheering, when there is a fight.

He was definitely a gem. Stirred a lot of controversy but generally could back it up.
He was knowledgeable in certain areas and times. He was also around fifteen years too many
Not to mention he had the best outfits in all of media. Bar none
I used to be a huge Don Cherry fan and then I grew up and realized a lot of what he was saying was really not ok.
A lot of the people in here have no problem with racism
I don't agree with all of his views but few people have been as prevalent in hockey or left their mark quite like Don Cherry. Hockey Night In Canada was something many Canadian's gathered around for decades. He's a hockey legend as far as I'm concerned.
I never get how people idolize a guy that won nothing, and spent most of his career in a studio. You guys just like angry old men that hate everything or something?
Canadian hockey culture got steadily more toxic starting in the 90s and Grapes was a big part of it. He’s an authoritarian bigot.
As a kid, I enjoyed his schtick in HNIC and his Rock Em Sock Em vids, but as I grew older, the more I really disliked Don Cherry the man.
And super fucking racist. Ron Maclean was done with his shit for a long time.
He’s a chode. Fuck him
Definitely interesting how a pretty mediocre coach made a living off of brain damage and racism. Don Cherry is a fucking moron, racist dipshit. Signed a commie, milk and honey enjoying, bike riding pinko lol
He also supports rapists.
Naturally
If you can excuse the racism, sexism and latent homophobia in his view of the game, his contribution to the proliferation of CTE alone is enough to make me happy he’s off TV.
Agreed. He lost me in the 90's with his 'Europeans are soft' drivel. I'm glad he's gone.
There’s no fighting in the woman’s league???
I couldn't agree more. So glad he's off TV. You forgot about his overinflated ego. The cringe factor is off the charts.
Great piano player though. https://youtu.be/qdJp5-g69go?si=-DMr1R5Xyzms9dwS
Oh shit I've never seen that video. Made my day. Don Cherry's Greatist Hit 😂
Also don’t forget he was a big advocate for our veterans, which people mistook as xenophobic.
>avid supporter of women’s hockey Just not [women watching hockey in the arena](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRm_K9OpYbo&t=3s), evidently. Liking your wife doesn't make you a feminist.
Big, big difference between liking women and respecting women.
where do you see him say women shouldnt be at the game? have you ever seen married with children? "what a wimp" was the perfect response to Ron the Cuck McLean then, and its the perfect response to Ron Benedict Arnold McLean now. a joke doesnt make you a misogynist either. youre soft, snowflake.
Can you show me a racist, sexist or homophobic clip of his?

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIyj8\_Pw87g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIyj8_Pw87g) Don't understand how anyone can miss this dinosaur
Hahaha fair enough. 2 outta 3 at least.
Yes, next question.
There's tons of clips of him calling Europeans "sissies", calling Russians "pinkos", saying women's hockey wasn't important, and of course the infamous "you come here, you take our jobs, wear a fucking poppy" rant that got him fired
[удалено]
expecting Don lovers to use their brain? you’re offending them
youre a chump
Well said, pine-rider. If you were any duller they'd use you as net-peg, eh?
You better not watch the show FRIENDS…..you would be very insulted by almost every episode
Good thing I also didn't think it was funny when it aired either.
Also noted xenophobe
Definitely interesting insofar as he was popular for losing the Bruins the Cup, and generally being an asshole about everyone not named Gordie or Bobby.
Didn't this guy get called for too many men on the ice 'cause he couldn't count?
How is this on every week?" Obviously, a lot of Canadians have a different view. But this was my opinion, someone from the outside looking in. Oh, his suits were pure fire! Love the suits.
As a Canadian - He was cliche at the best of times and a xenophobic racist the rest.
Basically just Don cut to seem even crazier.
i would like that hat
Never seen a guy who I agree with everything he says about hockey and virtually nothing he has to say about anything else, LOL.
He is the epitome of Old Man Yells at Cloud
Guys like him were a dime a dozen. He just sat in a chair that gave him an audience and influence way too long.
Interesting? He’s a Neanderthal d-bag.
Same reason why people like UFC, I'd pay money to watch two brutes beat the hell out of each other. That doesn't make us bad people lol
why are people downvoting you?? lol
Because Reddit lol. Most people here would just downvote someone rather than engage in a sensible conversation. Again, because Reddit lol.
I was studying abroad, so I was with a group of internationals and we were asked “if you could have one person who’d represent your country, who would it be?” The Canadian said Don Cherry emphatically. This was 2009
do not want.
No, he's an asshole.
Miss Don on HNIC. The best part besides the game.
I agree with you.
Yeah time to make another joke about Swedes or whatever. Say how did we do in the world jr this year?
My favorite Don Cherry story. It's the 2013 NHL draft. Panthers are sitting pretty at number 2 with a plethora of big names on the board. Obviously MacKinnon was going to go 1st overall, there was no doubt about that there. But guys like Jonathan Drouin, Seth Jones, Darnell Nurse and Sean Monahan were available for us to grab. Especially Jones and Nurse, with the Panthers needing a legit defenseman. Instead the Panthers opted to take a young Center from Finland at number 2. As you can imagine, Cherry went on one of his rants, lambasting us for not taking a good ole Canadian boy like Drouin or Nurse with our pick and opting to take a kid from and I quote "The Ice Follies." That kid we took was Aleksander Barkov btw.
Fucking piece of shit
Probably the most negative influence in hockey of the last 30 years, unless you are a fan of dump and chase hockey and concussion, and hate European players.
Don Cherry is one of the worst people in hockey Change my mind
What about those 5 guys who gang raped that poor girl.....
No. You are right.
Why? You’re correct.
Don Cherry is an old head moron. Even before coach’s corner ended his takes we’re dumb as hell. The Steven A of hockey.
The future of hockey is stiff penalties for fighting. Some fans wont like it, but the sport will be better off for it.
Don Cherry is an asshole. He should have been pulled from the CBC long before he was.
One of the most widely overrated people ever. Crap hockey player and never coached a team to win a cup. the guy was such an absolute nobody that he made up the personality to get people to pay attention to him and overlook his non nhl mattering resume 🤣
Fuck Don Cherry. Hope he stays under the rock where he's been recently...
Less interesting, more harmful. This guy was terrible for hockey culture. Good riddance.
Have you ever heard the arena boo when a fight breaks out?
It's true, though. Everyone loves a good fight.
Correct
Ironically people with concussion syndrome are also usually out of their minds.
Racist pig
Nah hes a tool. Always has been
This guy is awesome, and I will forever miss his commentary.
Not even top ten
Cherry was a dinosaur in his time… imagine trotting out his bullshit in 2024…
Don Cherry is a bigot and a xenophobe, and I'm glad he's off TV.
Chad
Hate on him all you want, he comes from a different era. He’s literally 90 years old. These clowns want to cancel anyone who doesn’t toe the line. I met him once when I was a kid after one of my games, and again in like ‘06 when I worked at a garden centre in Mississauga. He was super nice. We had a great chat while I helped him shop rose bushes for his wife, the guy is a gem.
I bet you’re also white as rice.
He was a legend. Appreciated he just said what was on his mind. It might have not been PC but it was authentic
Authentic and relatable to xenophobes and bigots.
"He tells it like it is" is always such a great excuse to say dumb shit. I know that's why I voted Trump last election. /s
Love the B’s, love Don Cherry, simple as. Screw you, Ron, you snake
He’s a snake because he doesn’t agree with Don’s racist old man rants? 😂
My then 3yo would ask the tv every coach’s corner: “is that your friend Don Cherry?” She knew something was sketchy with Ron.
W take
I want to watch hockey not grown men act like children
I know I am in the minority with this but i think he is a fucking retard tbh….but i do agree lol
