He really, really needs to. I think Freddie is starting to show signs of fatigue and could use a rest. Problem is, we rode him all through the Isles series so it’s been a while since Kooch saw live fire, but that’s only going to get worse the longer we wait.
I hope Rod decides to rip the Band-Aid off and put him in tonight since it’s not a total must-win game.
He genuinely had a month and a half to two month stretch as the best goalie in the NHL, if not at bare minimum top 3. Kid broke out in a big way this year.
Sujrprised I had to scroll this far to see Wallstedt in a comment. Top tier picks there with Wolf and him. I am watching both of their careers very closely. Swayman is my #1 though, been watching him grow the last 2 seasons and he has not disappointed.
I've basically all but given up on Woll. He is perpetually injured, and unfortunately, that is a terrible quality for a young goalie to have. This was his year to steal the net and his leg exploded. He got another chance in the playoffs and his limbs fell off like a Lego man.
How can you trust him as anything more than a backup at this point, and even then?
the leafs had two great goalie prospects in Scott and Woll, injuries ruined the career of the former, and it's taking a toll on the latter already. Hoping he pulls through and has some luck
He'd be a solid #2 anywhere in the league right now but Boston is just too deep. I feel bad for him having to wait so long to get into the show, but he's only 25 and if Boston wants to trade Ullmark they'll have to do it soon, so he might even get his shot next year.
I think Boston has to trade Ullmark his year. Swayman had the season Ullmark had a year ago and he has a significant age advantage. Ullmark’s value is still about as high as it’ll be and given the #3, I think it’s unfortunately time
I wouldn’t go that far. He’s got good numbers, but he’s not even the best AHL prospect goalie (Dustin Wolf) much less NHL backup. Just look at how Wolfs game has translated to the big leagues. Bussi is fine in his trajectory right now.
He made some big pretty jumps the last quarter of the season. Wouldn’t be surprised if his timeline to being considered “top” is even less than 4 years.
This, I think he may surprise people as early as next season. Given his growth at every single level he has a little adjustment period and then pretty consistently has dominated every level he's played, took him 20ish games in the AHL to adjust and then won best goalie as a rookie and league MVP last year
Honestly surprised he wasn't the backup for Calgray this year. As a CV Firebirds fan, I hated him because he is just so damn good. He has my respect because he can stop almost every single puck he can keep an eye on. If he isn't a full-time nhler within the next 2 years I will be shocked
Yeah I’m guessing Vladar or Markstrom get traded (hopefully Markstrom could stay and mentor him) and he moves to being a backup goalie full time and eventually he could probably start being the main goalie for us
I would rather keep Vladar than Markstrom personally. Don't get me wrong Marky is great but he has the higher trade value. Keeping Vladar would also more likely result in a tandem vs a starter and a back up, giving Wolf more ice time. Vladar also shows flashes of brilliance occasionally so I wouldn't mind seeing him develop a bit more with the organization.
Calgary fans will riot if he isn't in a full time roster spot next season. I think very likely markstrom is getting traded at the draft tbh
Also... piss off CV 😂😂😂 we need him to win the Calder cup so he quite literally has nothing else to accomplish in the AHL lol
His only weakness is his ability to cover the top of the net due to his size. It got blatantly exposed a few times this year. Hopefully it’s something g he can overcome.
He's young, meaning that growth will happen quickly. I predict a ton of growth by mid season next year, which may be just the perfect time to think about shopping Juuse (as an Ads fan and a Juuse fan I hope not so soon, but I could for sure see it)
When he’s on his game he can be lights out, But he sometimes lets some absolute softies through that can be quite frustrating. Though he’s got a great mentality and I think that will only help to grow and improve his game
He just turned 25 this year. Goalies take a while to mature so I wouldn’t write him off just yet because he gives up softies. And anyway every goalie gives up a softie from time to time, they’re human too.
Oh i didnt mean it in the sense that he’s not gonna pan out in regards to the softies, more like he can make some great saves but the ones you’d expect to be made sometimes get by, and that happens with every goalie now and then
Honestly, yes he does let in some bad goals every now and then but I've also noticed when that happens, he's not necessarily being given the best defense that the team can give him. When the team locks in defensively and doesn't force him to face nearly impossible to save shots, he does extremely well. When they hang him out to dry that's when I've seen his poorer performances take place
He’s only ever gotten steadily better in his career. I have every faith that he’ll continue to improve of years yet. He may well end up an elite keeper for years into his thirties. Or maybe not.
This is also only his second as a starter. Prior to 2022-23, he only had something like 14 games under his belt. I don’t think he’s peaked, and once he has a bit more experience under this belt, I think he’ll be pretty tricky to beat.
I feel like Skinner would be lights out on a team with better defensive tendencies, every time I’ve watched him play when he’s struggling it feels like he doesn’t trust the defence in front of him so he gets caught cheating because there’s players and passing lanes that aren’t being covered properly.
After the whole coaching change and surprisingly Coffey being an assistant coach they have gotten far better with their defensive play. Bouchard and Ekholm have been great, Nurse is starting to earn his salary and even the forwards are much more committed to defensive play.
His positioning and rebound control are decent, but I think his lateral movement is too slow to be considered a top goalie. He particularly struggles with cross-crease passes.
As a rangers fan I feel the same way. We have 5 goalies deep. Not sure if you’re following the providence/Hartford series but all goalies there are incredible. We’re both set for a minute.
Daccord's father is a well-known goalie coach. I'm not surprised he's gotten steadily-better throughout his career.
People are gonna argue. But Sam Ersson in Philly needs to be on this list.
Started 12 games last year in his true rookie season.
Then thrust into starting 50+ this year after Hart left.
Philly was one of the surprise teams in the league until the second half of March when they fell apart because they rode him into the ground.
Skinner with Edmonton is going to be a great goalie in a handful of years, not many goalies get his ice time at his age. Also valdar in Calgary and wolf coming up in Calgary. I’m interested in wolf, it’ll be cool to see a small goalie take the league via speed and talent and change things up from these 6’6” goalies everyone’s going for. Keep an eye on the USA and Russian goalies, both have phenomenal junior goalie programs
Skinner in EDM. had a rough start to the year but lights out down the stretch and improved on a good rookie year previously where he got some Calder consideration.
A goalie who is a stud at such a young age is pretty rare, so I don’t think we have another one in the league that is comparative to those two.
One that I would argue would be Joseph Woll. Torontos defence has been so shit over a large portion of the year yet he was the only consistently good goalie they had. Every single time he got injured Toronto had huge goalie issues. Plus, in the playoffs he was a huge reason Toronto pushed it to 7 and I think they could have won that game if he was in net.
The other, who I think is the best young goalie in the league (other then the ones mentioned in the post) would be Connor Ingram. He played 50 games and he had a .907 save percent as well as 6 shutouts. He’s an absolute animal in the crease and he would be well known as an excellent young goalie if he didn’t play for one of the biggest lolcows in the NHL.
I notice people are saying Kochetkov, he’s a good goalie, but he has such an insane defence core in front of him that I just don’t think he outclasses some of the other stud young goalies who have to stand on their head every night. Hockey is very much a team game and to have that elite defence core in front of him makes his job a lot easier despite the fact he is an excellent goalie and lesser goalies would likely not do as good as him. The other issue is the guy is all or nothing a lot of the time and needs to be bailed out by his teammates a lot, which is fun to watch, but does make him a goalie to be less confident about in the crease. He’s the right goalie for the right team.
Yes for Connor Ingram to post the stats he does with how shitty his team is speaks volumes about his skills. After his injury they rode out the season switching him every second game which was disappointing.
I'm going to go off the board with some top young prospects goalies instead of guys who are stars.
Askarov in Nashville, Wolf in Calgary, Ersson in Philly, Dostal in Anaheim.
Yeah we’re all really hoping he’s ready for starter role by end of Bob’s contract. Although Bob still has great goaltending in him and may earn another deal at this rate
Dead serious I would’ve said Georgiev till this year. And not just lately but the entire year has been shaky.
Before that he was pretty damn solid in years prior with the Avs & backup Rangers
Carter Hart? No, I've never heard him accused of any sort of wrongdoing whatsoever. But I know who we can call to double check and clear the whole thing up. Alex Formenton is as trust-worthy as anyone I know, maybe he can help.
Not many which is why I find why find it ridiculous that fellow Devils fans keep blasting Fitzgerald for not getting better goalies than he did. This is why teams won't give them away for anything short of a king's ransom.
Logan Thompson. All-Star last year, frontrunner for the Calder until injury came. Dude has a bright future if he can stay healthy.
Cue the hate comments…
Askarov is probably the best one but it’ll cost a lot to get him if Nashville is willing. They’re not.
Realistic available one, Specer Knight. I’m still a believer he’s got the chops. Would’ve taken a chance on him before Fitz traded Vitek.
Fitz can’t take any chances in the goalie department so his realistic choices are Saros, Ullmark, Markstrom, and Merzlikins. Saros probably going to cost the most assets and Merzlikins the least.
Ima say justus annunen, keep an eye on him, he’s going to inherit the net in a great position to succeed. But suprised nobody mentioned woll.
He’s looked so much better after getting some consistent starts this year. Excited to see how he handles a full backup role next year.
* cough* Juice could win the starting job at any point
By that logic any backup could win the starting job at any point. Juice is developing really well and we love to see that, no need to rush it.
Yeah i mean probably not next year.
Pyotr Kochetkov
I have aome of his rookie cards so I dig him! Funny guy with personality too. Wonder if he sees some time in the playoffs.
I hate switching goalies in the playoffs, coming from a guy that loved the Hasek Ozzie years. But yall need to give up on Fred
Need to get the NYETMINDER in before we have to....
I also came here to nominate Pyotr "You no touch my guys" Kochetkov!
He’s absolutely insane to watch. He’s awesome
Beat me to this
His name is SILOVS!
Can't spell party without Arty
Unless you misspell Artie…. Or Party
COME ON ARTY LET'S GO PARTY
Damn you. Gonna have that in my head all night.
KING SILOVS
All caps when you spell the name!
I’ll be so mad if he puts on a show tomorrow. He played well vs Nashville
This is literally the only answer. What an absolute stud.
SIlovs me yaaa yaaaaa yaaaaaaa!
UPL in Buf
Let's not forget Mr. Jeans either.
I’ve never heard this nickname for Devon, this is amazing
He genuinely had a month and a half to two month stretch as the best goalie in the NHL, if not at bare minimum top 3. Kid broke out in a big way this year.
Surprised he's mentioned so far down. I guess being in Buffalo and Finnish will do that to you
Dustin Wolf, Jesper Wallstedt
Sujrprised I had to scroll this far to see Wallstedt in a comment. Top tier picks there with Wolf and him. I am watching both of their careers very closely. Swayman is my #1 though, been watching him grow the last 2 seasons and he has not disappointed.
Ukko Pekka Luukkonen and Devon Levi
Joel Hofer had a phenomenal season and will make a formidable tandem w/ Binnington.
His name is HOFer?
Exactly.
One of the best goalie tandems in the league already, also both are on the Hockey Canada team for Worlds this year.
Spencer Knight is an elite talent. If he can sort his personal matters out he can be special.
He’s seems to be sorting them out pretty well I’d like to see him play some NHL games next year
Time will tell but I want to give Silovs an honorable mention.
As a frustrated Preds fan, I agree.
That series was goalie vs goalie
Was pretty low shots though. More like defense vs defense. Just hammering pucks at each other.
A lot of ice packs for a lot of groins/knees/ankles in those locker rooms for sure.
I think Cayden primeau is pretty good with 2 shutouts and 1 of those being a 43-shot shutout.
I wanna throw Montembeau’s name in here too. Played against tougher competition and has steadily gotten better.
Primeau is 24, montembeault is 27
Still pretty young for a goalie
And then Fowler… good stuff
he was so good in college, I'm really pulling for him despite my distaste for the Habs
Woll
Very solid. Especially positioning. His durability as the main goalie is a concern
He can take my ankle next year if it comes up again, don’t sweat it
Agreed. If he can stay healthy. Seems like he’s made of glass. Excellent when he plays
100%, he's what Toronto needs for a playoff run Now the rest of the team however...
3rd string Boston Bruins goalie Brandon Bussi xd
If the 5 hole is between the legs, which hole is the Bussi?
Off the backside and in.
He'd be a solid #2 anywhere in the league right now but Boston is just too deep. I feel bad for him having to wait so long to get into the show, but he's only 25 and if Boston wants to trade Ullmark they'll have to do it soon, so he might even get his shot next year.

I think Dustin Wolfe from Calgary wull be promising. I don't think he's a top goalie obviously but give em 4 years or so
He made some big pretty jumps the last quarter of the season. Wouldn’t be surprised if his timeline to being considered “top” is even less than 4 years.
I was thinking the same thing. Hes been very solid. Wasn't sure on a timeframe though
This, I think he may surprise people as early as next season. Given his growth at every single level he has a little adjustment period and then pretty consistently has dominated every level he's played, took him 20ish games in the AHL to adjust and then won best goalie as a rookie and league MVP last year

I would be pissed off too! I appreciate a good goalie and that man deserves the full time roster spot.
It's all I want next season tbh, hard time have any real expectations for anything else season wise next year 🙃
His only weakness is his ability to cover the top of the net due to his size. It got blatantly exposed a few times this year. Hopefully it’s something g he can overcome.
Yaroslav Askarov will be in the NHL sooner than later.
You know you’ve got a stud in the pipeline when your FO is willing to shop Juuse Saros
He’s good, but still has some growing up to do.
He's young, meaning that growth will happen quickly. I predict a ton of growth by mid season next year, which may be just the perfect time to think about shopping Juuse (as an Ads fan and a Juuse fan I hope not so soon, but I could for sure see it)
He’s physically fine. He just has a tendency to overestimate his talent and occasionally do something stupid.
Found my wife’s burner account
Dostal
OP wanted named young goalies, not No-Named goalies.
Toronto media is a joke
What are you on about. Dostal is 23 and looks promising. His team is the problem.
Probably Stuart skinner, despite some early season struggles
When he’s on his game he can be lights out, But he sometimes lets some absolute softies through that can be quite frustrating. Though he’s got a great mentality and I think that will only help to grow and improve his game
He just turned 25 this year. Goalies take a while to mature so I wouldn’t write him off just yet because he gives up softies. And anyway every goalie gives up a softie from time to time, they’re human too.
Oh i didnt mean it in the sense that he’s not gonna pan out in regards to the softies, more like he can make some great saves but the ones you’d expect to be made sometimes get by, and that happens with every goalie now and then
It happens with Vasilevskiy sometimes as much as I hate to say that. It goes to show no matter how good, how elite you are, you're not unbreakable
Oh for sure, plenty of time to take the next step etc. Big fan of his potential
You know in the first 2 or 3 minutes if it's going to be a bad night for him. And you can't escape it.
Ya I think Skinner has a lot of potential. When he’s locked in he seems unbeatable but when he’s off he’s really off.
He’s only ever gotten steadily better in his career. I have every faith that he’ll continue to improve of years yet. He may well end up an elite keeper for years into his thirties. Or maybe not.
I think he had a big confidence issue. But he’s gotten much better this year.
This is also only his second as a starter. Prior to 2022-23, he only had something like 14 games under his belt. I don’t think he’s peaked, and once he has a bit more experience under this belt, I think he’ll be pretty tricky to beat.
I truly believe he can be a veznia level goalie the only question is how long that will take him
Oilers?
No. the other Stuart Skinner.
Steeeeeewwwuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrt
Whhhhaaaatre u doing here
Glad to see you Kings fans know your Daddy's name.
His real name is Bart Joseph. His friends just call him Stuart
Yes
I feel like Skinner would be lights out on a team with better defensive tendencies, every time I’ve watched him play when he’s struggling it feels like he doesn’t trust the defence in front of him so he gets caught cheating because there’s players and passing lanes that aren’t being covered properly.

His positioning and rebound control are decent, but I think his lateral movement is too slow to be considered a top goalie. He particularly struggles with cross-crease passes.
We got another good 25 year old in Boston too. Brandon Bussi will probably be Sway’s # 2 next year. We can’t pay Ully and Sway both # 1 contracts.
As a rangers fan I feel the same way. We have 5 goalies deep. Not sure if you’re following the providence/Hartford series but all goalies there are incredible. We’re both set for a minute.
Agreed. Bruins are in a good place. I think it will take something like 7m per year for Sway
Sebastian Cossa and Jesper Wallstedt are promising prospects.
Daccord is very good and if we had some offensive presence this year might’ve put us farther up than we got
27, will be 28 before next season starts, not really that young. But yeah, he was pretty lights out this year.
It’s very strange that every goalie is either 42 or 24. Young-er I guess haha
He and Sam Montembeault are the guys I have in like their late 20s but also relatively new in their NHL careers, tons of talent both
Daccord's father is a well-known goalie coach. I'm not surprised he's gotten steadily-better throughout his career. [https://stopitgoaltending.com/amo-team/brian-daccord/](https://stopitgoaltending.com/amo-team/brian-daccord/)
Daccord was a beast for ASU Hockey a few years ago, his progression is not shocking to me.
I’m honestly surprised that I had to scroll this far down to find an Ersson mention. For such a shitty situation, he did very very well for a rookie.
Logan Thompson when he’s feeling himself. Not him when he’s not.
What is your definition of young? Under 30? 25?
Around 25-26 or younger
Skinner with Edmonton is going to be a great goalie in a handful of years, not many goalies get his ice time at his age. Also valdar in Calgary and wolf coming up in Calgary. I’m interested in wolf, it’ll be cool to see a small goalie take the league via speed and talent and change things up from these 6’6” goalies everyone’s going for. Keep an eye on the USA and Russian goalies, both have phenomenal junior goalie programs
Elvis Merzlikins... definitely worth trading a 1C to the BlueJackets for...
Went from “best goalie not in the NHL” to “worst starter in the NHL” quick fast
Skinner in EDM. had a rough start to the year but lights out down the stretch and improved on a good rookie year previously where he got some Calder consideration.
My sleeper pick is Erik Portillo, Kings prospect. Keep an eye out for him next season.
Biased opinion based on small sample of games and time but I gotta say Silovs
You want guys that are in the NHL today or upcoming? I would say Wallstead and Askarov are going to be here in no time.
A goalie who is a stud at such a young age is pretty rare, so I don’t think we have another one in the league that is comparative to those two. One that I would argue would be Joseph Woll. Young man Cam Talbot 💪
Šilovs has been impressive so far
stuart skinner and ukko pekka luukonen
Apparently silovs
Arturs Silovs …. Duh
Keeping my eye on Silovs.
Woll n Walls.
My God, after reading this thread, these goalies have the best f-ing names.
Arturs Silovs
Devon Levi
Ilya Sorokin
If he can stay healthy I think Joe Woll could be up there. But has to stay on the ice.
I think you could make arguments for Kochetkov, Dostal, Woll, and Anthony Stolarz
Silvos, I’m really hoping lol
askarov is dominating the ahl
Joseph Woll is a beast
Arturs Silovs
Blues Joel Hofer is showing some promise at 23yr old. He’s 1/3 selected for Team Canada. Binnington was as well actually.
Saros is one of my favourite. Love the agile goalies like Quick
Mr Joey "First Winter Classic Shut Out" Daccord ^I'm ^not ^biased ^at ^all, ^of ^course
I'm going to go off the board with some top young prospects goalies instead of guys who are stars. Askarov in Nashville, Wolf in Calgary, Ersson in Philly, Dostal in Anaheim.
Spencer Knight will be a star one day
Yeah we’re all really hoping he’s ready for starter role by end of Bob’s contract. Although Bob still has great goaltending in him and may earn another deal at this rate
Dead serious I would’ve said Georgiev till this year. And not just lately but the entire year has been shaky. Before that he was pretty damn solid in years prior with the Avs & backup Rangers
Isn’t he like 28 years old?
Yeah he's not young anymore lol
When he played for NYR against the Leafs 5ish years ago and made like 50something saves while they beat us i thought he was going to be special
Swayman, Swayman, and Swayman
Carter Hart, Stuart Skinner, Filip Gustavsson, Ilya Samsonov, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Pyotr Kochetkov, Joseph Woll
I, uh, I'm not so sure about Carter Hart.
I'm talking about the young goaltending star for the Philadelphia Flyers, Carter Hart.
Yeah. His stats look good, for sure. I just have a feeling about him, y'know. Goalies are voodoo. I just don't see him having much of a career.
Carter Hart? No, I've never heard him accused of any sort of wrongdoing whatsoever. But I know who we can call to double check and clear the whole thing up. Alex Formenton is as trust-worthy as anyone I know, maybe he can help.
I think they even played on a team together at one point maybe they did some bonding and he can let us know what Hart is into
I Gustavsson is washed, it’s looking more and more like last year was a fluke. There is some buzz that he could be on the move this offseason.
Skinner
Sam Ersson
Not many which is why I find why find it ridiculous that fellow Devils fans keep blasting Fitzgerald for not getting better goalies than he did. This is why teams won't give them away for anything short of a king's ransom.
Ask me again in a few years when trey augustine makes it
Filip Larsson, hopefully he gets some starts for Pittsburgh next year.
Logan Thompson. All-Star last year, frontrunner for the Calder until injury came. Dude has a bright future if he can stay healthy. Cue the hate comments…
Montembeault
Not a lot of people know about the Wings top goalie prospect, Cossa, but they will soon.
Bobrovsky edit: my bad, my brain didn't read the "young" part
Skinner.
Logan Thompson.
the obvious answer is Artur Silovs. But Ville Husso does have some potential if he stops getting injured all the time
Give it a year or 2 and the #1 answer to this question will be Sebastian Cossa. Dude is special
Mads Sogaard
David Savard has made some pretty clutch saves recently
Ivan Fedatov
Erik Portillo. Remember the name
What’s a young goalie? I thought you had to be around 30 to start. Is my team lying to me?
Woll and Hildeby are an incredible young tandem for the leafs.
Ingram
A little bit older but Daccord has looked really good (I’m obviously biased as a kraken fan but whatever)
Holfer
IGOR
Jakub Dobes
Askarov is probably the best one but it’ll cost a lot to get him if Nashville is willing. They’re not. Realistic available one, Specer Knight. I’m still a believer he’s got the chops. Would’ve taken a chance on him before Fitz traded Vitek. Fitz can’t take any chances in the goalie department so his realistic choices are Saros, Ullmark, Markstrom, and Merzlikins. Saros probably going to cost the most assets and Merzlikins the least.
Tom Fitzgerald better be in here taking notes.
Joel Blomqvist
Askarov with the Preds. Dude has been unreal in the AHL.
Stu Skinner has been finally settling into his starting role and has been pretty spectacular this year.
Eddie Lack.
Devon Levi
Daccord at Seattle. He will be a stud
Skinner has made some big steps this year. He looks better in net all the time.
