Homer Murray?h, but he's a Millenial.

Seems like the most popular name in Quebec in 1997 (around an average DOB for an NHLer) was "Samuel", which strikes me as about right, we've got a few if those coming out of the Q.
I feel like there are a lot more Rasmuses from Sweden than there used to be.
I played on a baseball team growing up in the 90s with 4 guys named Steven or Stephen and 7 guys named John or Jonathan. 11 of the 15 guys on the team had those names.
Darren was semi common when I was a kid
we had a lot of Brad, Michael, and Jason
I think 50% of all girls were Jennifer's
theres a stat out there that something like 95% of all gen-x dudes have slept with a Jennifer at some point in their lives lol

I went to school with 2 other Kevins for 12 years. One of us was called *Mac*, and I often answered to *Robby*. That left *Kev* for the guy could have called *Hughie*, but didn't have to.
Making a nickname out of one's surname was common then, as was just callling a guy by his surname.
Secret Base (yay Jon Bois!) did a 2 part series on something similar to this. The ascent and then decline of the name Bob in sports. Obviously this isn't the name Guy. But I feel the parallels would be pretty similar. Names falling out of fashion and the like. Recommend the video though. It's a good one.

such a great video, a seemingly random topic but it just all works together perfectly for an amazing story
Guy is now associated with very old folks. However, you can still hope a Guillaume (William in French) or two end up going by Guy at some point in the near future
As a percentage--absolutely! But don't forget there were 18 teams in the 70s and 21 teams in the early 80s. I think the absolute number of Quebec-born players is probably not that different (and don't forget there are anglo Quebec players too!).
Quanthockey lists [59 players](https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/province/nhl-players-born-in-quebec-2023-24-stats.html) from Quebec for the 23-24 season.
[83-84](https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/province/nhl-players-born-in-quebec-1983-84-stats.html) had 76.
[79-80](https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/province/nhl-players-born-in-quebec-1979-80-stats.html) had 105!
When I was a kid there were people in my high school named Guy. This was close to the border with Quebec, in the states. There was a lot of confusion among Americans who did not happen to be hockey fans. And those guys got crap for their name often. Or teachers would say it wrong.
I imagine that was a reason for families who have connections in the French and English society would pick names that are not so easily confused.
How many Quinn's were playing back then? Naming conventions change over time, and there are also a lot less French players in the league in general, and it is a very French name.
Double whammy the NHL having far fewer French Canadien players, and Guy becoming a less popular name among that group.
I can think of at least a couple instances where Team (US State) would beat Team Quebec, which would have been unthinkable in the old NHL.
It used to be way more popular back in the day in Quebec than it is now. It's like how Cecil and Harold used to be popular in English Canada, and now nobody named their kids those names.
I miss the 1920-1950 period, when you had REAL men's names: Punch, Baldy, Cooney, Babe, Toe and Mud. And those weren't nicknames.
So much better than everyone being named Connor now.
1. Guy Hebert's brother Jay, also from Upstate New York, admitted that it was Herbert and HEBERT.
2. Re-read number one.
3. Jay played for the Missouri River Otters in Suburban St. Louis.
Where are all the people named Marilyn, Joan, Gertrude, Margaret....
Now everyone is named Olivia, Emma, Jackson, Madison, Sophia, Harper, Avery....names change. Thank God. If I was named Herman, Ernest or Lester I would've been pissed.
yep it's exactly that. no one under 50 is named Guy anymore.
It would be like a Gen Z being named Homer.
Hey, meet my toddler Bertie!
Homer Murray?h, but he's a Millenial. [https://people.com/parents/all-about-bill-murray-children/](https://people.com/parents/all-about-bill-murray-children/)
Imagine a newborn named guy lol
I’m not your buddy guy
I’m not your guy, pal
I’m not your friend, pal
I'm not you guy, guy
I’m not your friend, buddy
I’m not your pal, bro
Faire des "prouts sur la bédaine" d'un Guy, ça doit être spécial.
Can attest. My uncle Guy is 52.
Not true, I have a relative named Guy who’s 33 years old. But it’s indeed very unusual.
l’exception qui confirme la règle
Oui oui, regle es madé tu bi brokeux
Hoh hoh hoh (French sounding laugh)
I grew up with a Guy and was going to argue till I remembered I am over 50
I was thinking what about guy Fieri. But he’s 56. Maybe you are right
"Connor" became the new "Guy"
I’m hoping Gump will be the next big name. Having only one Gump in the NHL HOF is a shame.
I don’t want to burst your bubble here, but Gump wasn’t actually his name. Lorne Worsely just didn’t sound as good I guess.
Great! Next you’ll be telling us that Resch’s first name isn’t Chico!
One of the best goalie names of all time - right up there with Rogie Vachon and the GOAT - Vladislav Tretiak
I'd like to add Daren Puppa to the list of best goalie names
My bubble is burst…
"that ball was signed by Babe Ruth." "George signed this?"
Oh ok, Mr.Knowitall, now you'll tell us that 'Toe' Blake wasn't his real name either?! ..pff
We need the next coming of Forest Gump!

It’s just that, like you pointed out the name isn’t popular anymore
[удалено]
[You missed a perfectly good opportunity to use “distinct lach of Elmer” lol](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmer_Lach)
What do you mean people don’t name their sons Leonard anymore? /s
Most of the teams have at least 3. New Guy, that Guy and some Guy...
Sometimes old guy or THE guy too
That fuckin guy is the worst
I thought he was the new guy...
Probably hanging out with Bartholomew, Arthur, and Augustus. Names can fall out of favour, just like they can become popular.
Arthur is back in Quebec, mainly due to recent waves of French immigrants
ARFA! SHALOM!
There ya go, they’re dusting it if the shelf
Don't forget Guy Ledouche
Right you are Ken.
#DON'T #GET #ELIMINATED!
Not “Guy,” “Guy.”
"I'm not your guy, Guy!"
Sadly, Guy Germaine fizzled out in the AHL
My fathers name is Darren. I have never met another Darren in my 29 years of life. Some names just get tossed onto the back burner.
Can that happen to Ryan and John and Steve
My name is literally Ryan....had 4 other Ryan's in my grade in school. So I hope.
I have two Ryan's just in my office and far more that work for the company. There are a lot of you.
We need a purge. There can only be one.
Time to brush up on your sword skills
Don't need skills to commit Seppuku
You're not wrong 🤣
Ryan's Hope was a soap back in the day. Don't remember ever watching it though.
I played on a baseball team growing up in the 90s with 4 guys named Steven or Stephen and 7 guys named John or Jonathan. 11 of the 15 guys on the team had those names.
All biblical names.
Peak Ryan was so bad that my high school had several female Ryan's as well
I lived in a house with 3 other Brians in the 90's. There was a Steve, a Nick, a Chuck, and a Mike, but there were a lot of Brians.
My son is John, but so is my father and my wife's father. We like our dads.
No because then you end up with stupid ass names like Kyler and Jaylen and Jayden
Michael was me and like 4 of my closest friends in HS. We just started using last names to make it easier.
It would have been great if you all just pronounced it slightly different to tell each other apart.
Dang it. We were too busy quoting Chapelle Show and slapping each other in the nuts.
Black actors
Darren is common enough for Irish people. It's a variant of Darragh.
Darren was semi common when I was a kid we had a lot of Brad, Michael, and Jason I think 50% of all girls were Jennifer's theres a stat out there that something like 95% of all gen-x dudes have slept with a Jennifer at some point in their lives lol

I'll watch Jon Bois talk about anything
Absolutely agree. Very big fan of his stuff. The Seattle Mariners history is just beautiful.
Guy got replaced by Ryan which got replaced by Connor
Which will be replaced by Brayden and eventually Raleigh
I'm not your guy, friend......
I'm not your guy, budday.
Same with the Dennis/Denis and Richard. Last Richard I could recall is Panik Everyone is Sam or Connor now.
They're not your Guy, friend!
Where are all the NHL hockey players with flame-printed Hawaiian shirts?
Guy is now associated with very old folks. However, you can still hope a Guillaume (William in French) or two end up going by Guy at some point in the near future
It's the french equivalent of "Harold" or "Walter" or "Norman" Just nobody uses it anymore.
I have friend in his 40's named Norman and he has a dog named Walter lol
Look at this Guy asking these questions…
I believe there are also fewer Quebecois players in the NHL now.
As a percentage--absolutely! But don't forget there were 18 teams in the 70s and 21 teams in the early 80s. I think the absolute number of Quebec-born players is probably not that different (and don't forget there are anglo Quebec players too!).

I stand corrected. Thanks. I didn't realize it was that many
It would be interesting to do a data viz of it.
Where are the Gaëtan, Dennis and Jacques?
They all changed their legal first names to Connor...
[удалено]
the famous Québécois NHL player
[удалено]
five-hole town? 🤔
Can't forget Guy Smiley
There are a ton of them left…. every NHL game, “I hate that Guy”
I'm not your guy, buddy.
I think it had a lot to do with Final Fight.
https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/0xundMo4bo
Withall the baseball playersnamed hank...
They're in Northern quebec ever since the Denny Pratt tragedy
Brayden
Let's Remember Some Guys
I dunno, why are there no Cecil’s anymore?
Where are all the guys named Bill? Name trends bro.
Nylander
Karlsson
I know Will is also Bill but no one goes by Bill in the NHL anymore so it’s similar in that regard to Guy.
Because as you get older, you quickly realize that someone who was once your “Guy”, is quickly becoming your “Buddy”.
When I was a kid there were people in my high school named Guy. This was close to the border with Quebec, in the states. It’s a shame, so many iconic “Guy’s” over the years.
Not as many French Canadians becoming hockey players. At least, none that make it to the show.
There no "Daves" anymore either.
Kids in the Hall, Dave's I Know
Quebec didn’t pass their language laws in time and the anglophones stole their culture. That’s sarcasm, I think.
Double whammy the NHL having far fewer French Canadien players, and Guy becoming a less popular name among that group. I can think of at least a couple instances where Team (US State) would beat Team Quebec, which would have been unthinkable in the old NHL.
Didn’t you hear what just happened to that guy in Qatar?
All the Guy’s are in their 40’s-60’s now …
It used to be way more popular back in the day in Quebec than it is now. It's like how Cecil and Harold used to be popular in English Canada, and now nobody named their kids those names.
French equivalent of Bob
It's French, bitch.
The same place as all the guys named John, Mike and Steve
How bout Cecil, that man would be from Ottowa or an offensive lineman from Alabama. That could be true 60 years ago.
I miss the 1920-1950 period, when you had REAL men's names: Punch, Baldy, Cooney, Babe, Toe and Mud. And those weren't nicknames. So much better than everyone being named Connor now.
Could really jazz up the NHL monikers by borrowing a few from the NFL. They have some insanely unique names playing football.
1. Guy Hebert's brother Jay, also from Upstate New York, admitted that it was Herbert and HEBERT. 2. Re-read number one. 3. Jay played for the Missouri River Otters in Suburban St. Louis.
“WE HAVE TO GET OUT OF HERE BEFORE ONE OF THOSE THINGS KILLS GUY!”
No more Serges either, very fond of the name Serge
I think it’s like. Where are all the hockey players named Wayne?
Retired or dead
Notice the last name...your asking in the wrong language...en francais
Also a distinct lack of Gordies.
I know what you mean man it's like today is equivalent of Connor, got soooo many dudes named Connor in the show.
Where are all the people named Marilyn, Joan, Gertrude, Margaret.... Now everyone is named Olivia, Emma, Jackson, Madison, Sophia, Harper, Avery....names change. Thank God. If I was named Herman, Ernest or Lester I would've been pissed.
There all named Conner or Tyler now
Connor is the new Guy
This is Dick. My friend Guy and I are in our 80’s.
With all the housewives named Mildred
The French gave up on making decent hockey players. That simple.
Don’t forget Guy Germaine https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ7UCl1VoZMkCvd20FERE2t6cA5ryMyJ4mX3w&usqp=CAU
Guy pronounced ghee
Pretty sure just a common French/Canadian thing
Names just change over the years.. like, nowadays, you don’t hear of hardly anyone named lance. But back in medieval times, you’d hear lance a lot.
It’s the French version of Gary. Haven’t made a new one since 1970.
In Canadian it’s “Gay”.
Because people finally realized what a stupid name that is.
[удалено]
It's pronounced /gi/ because it's a French name. Just like how "Roy" is /ʁwa/ instead of /ɹɔɪ/.
Americans and Canadians won't agree on the pronunciation, but I think we can agree it's a bwa's name, eh?
