drewp05

It was 10 originally, but they had a half off sale

PlanZedVR

That is an insane find! Congratz

drewp05

Thanks. I want to try out that old South Park game and don’t let go, but I’ll need to find some cables for it first

ddamm101

What old south park game?

drewp05

Jacksepticeye has a video of it. It was basically just the town with characters all around that would say lines when you walked up to them

SharpTenor

This just brought me back to the Golden age. Every day I couldn’t wait to check the subreddit and see what other new thing was waiting for me. I’m glad the industry is growing, but the excitement when it was all potential…it was kind of a rush!

repoluhun

VR still is a sick ass hobby

Burgerboy_4748

Yep even better for me now I got my elite battery strap

daqgsftwgrsshyrs

Nice deal, I did some google searching and found they normally go for around 100-300 bucks, the the exception of a 76, and a 2900.

drewp05

Yeah when I was looking the best deal was $80. But this one didn’t come with a power adapter or the extra lenses

What_Is_The_Meaning

What’s a used Cv1 going for?

TheDragonzord

Cheapest one I can find right now is around $200, used obviously. That's not bad. I'd wager someone looking to sell their CV1 to pay for an upgrade could get more by selling the controllers and sensors all individually, for CV1 owners that have something break. You could definitely get more money for it that way. TONS of people are still using and loving the CV1 including myself.

What_Is_The_Meaning

Great advice. Thank you!

TheAngryRedPanda

On top of that, check shopgoodwill.com for them. Just snagged a cv1 for $80 and it worked perfectly fine.

BoxBoy7999

I bought mine for £170

Burgerboy_4748

Really I can barely find the CV1 most of the time I find the rift s when I do find a CV1 it is priced at 400 to 700 usd

TheDragonzord

There was one on ebay for 225 when I checked. The others were more expensive but maybe the more expensive ones are just sitting there going unsold, and the cheap ones get snapped up quick.

Burgerboy_4748

Yeah I was looking at ebay for the CV1 and found it for 300 USD and a rift s for 238 USD and both were great working condition and came with everything

drewp05

Honestly probably not much more. I was looking into selling mine when they announced the Facebook account thing, but I haven’t had to link a Facebook account yet so I’m still using it

mule_roany_mare

As of now you can still use a quest without a Facebook oculus account with “Oculess”. You have to side load any apps though without access to a store.

[deleted]

bought mine for $130 (and it had 3 sensors)

addivo

>Cheapest one I can find right now is around $200, used obviously. That's not bad. I've bought a CV1 for just €80, controllers & cables included, all good :) You just gotta be lucky i guess

reprobyte

When the CV1 came out they were selling brand new for £30 loads of em on eBay, hindsight on that now.

tswpoker1

Nice! I think mine was $300. But that was about 8.5 years ago lolol

[deleted]

ahahaha

Gregasy

Wow, lucky. I'm trying to buy it for a reasonable price as well. I'd like to have it, since it was my first VR experience and have such fond nemories on it.

c4virus

Are there resources for using an old kit? I have a DK2, tried setting it up like a year ago and couldn't get anything to work. I no longer have the old computer that had all the installs on it. I gave up and bought a new one.

not_superbeak

The early versions of the Oculus software was all self contained and didn’t need any updates before being able to use. It still had support for DK1 and 2. Not sure if I still have a copy laying around.

drewp05

I looked it up, and if you go on the oculus development page I think you can still download the software

jamatar

https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/package/oculus-sdk-for-windows/0.8.0.0-beta/ This is the one you want for the DK1 specifically! Steam VR is fully compatible with it, I was playing Star Wars Squadrons with mine. Wasn't super readable but hey it worked :D

077u-5jP6ZO1

Will this work for DK2, too? I still have one lying around somewhere...

ZaInT

Me too, I had no idea that it still works software-wise, not that it has any value either

NUKMUK

I just recently found my old DK2 and the newest version of Oculus and SteamVR actually work with it. You can even use the knuckles using openvr space calibrator. The IR lights on the headset seem mess up the tracking for the controllers though.

077u-5jP6ZO1

Good to know, thanks!

Mr_SunnyBones

used it for things like Battlezone or 3d cinema apps and its fine in short doses (I find that after about 40 minutes my eyeballs feel microwaved)

brantlew

It depends on the display driver. nVidia started looking for Oculus devices and if found would not enumerate them as a normal monitor. It was typically a string search of some sort, but I can't remember if DK1's are affected. If your DK1 shows up as a monitor - you're good to go. Old Oculus apps were self-contained with no dll runtime or driver dependencies. If DK1 doesn't show up as a monitor, you will have to grab ancient display drivers to enable it.

jessaay

I'm pretty sure you can use steamvr to make the headset act like a monitor to the PC, or would that not work?

ImmersiveGamer83

Extended mode

drewp05

I’m not sure. I bet there’s an old build of the oculus software somewhere, but that’ll interfere with my current oculus software I use for my cv1

bitchpigeonsuperfan

I managed to get a dk2 working fairly easily

wescotte

I'd be happy just paying $5 for that case.

WarthogOsl

Yep, I think the case , for any use, is probably worth $10 or $20. It's the only thing I miss about my DK1.

[deleted]

yoooo that’s a steal!

drewp05

I know. I saw a hamster wheel, then I looked under it and I saw “oculus development kit”. And I said holy shit and opened it hoping it was a dk1 and it was. So I grabbed it and almost never put it down until I was out of the store

[deleted]

nice!

Luckychunk

I really like your hamster story

drewp05

Thank you

Nukemarine

When DK1 is your first VR experience, it is mind blowing. When three or four generations has passed, it a low resolution smeary mess. That said, I still have my original DK1 cause it is a piece of history.

sparkyblaster

I went from playing with a DK1 to a quest 2. The leap is staggering.

pixxelpusher

Almost 10 years now since DK1 was Kickstarted. Imagine where VR will be in the next 10.

drewp05

It’s nostalgic for me. Brings me back to watching markiplier when I was a kid

neccoguy21

You're old enough to be buying stuff at thrift stores, but young enough to have watched a YouTuber doing VR stuff as a kid... Wild.

drewp05

I usually go to that store to buy used DVDs, but I come across some cool stuff in there every once in a while. I bought a poloroid camera there once (also for $5)

Joe6161

Jeez. Sell that in 20 years for like 100k

Lightspeedius

I have a barely used DK1 and an unused DK2. My retirement plan!

sparkyblaster

I have a mint condition DK1. Hardly used. I'm wondering if I part with it because I need the space or if it will be worth something someday. Could go either way. Tempted to leave it at my parents but they live near the sea and I'm not sure if the case will protect it enough. Might need to seal it in a bag.

Joe6161

Never let that thing go. It will cost a nice sum in a few decades. Even if you don’t get to see that money, someone from your family will. It’s like having the first IBM computer or an apple 1.

sparkyblaster

Arg I know but I'm an ex horder and compleatly flipped and rant to get rid of everything. I'm just going to have to find a spot tucked away for it.

[deleted]

Time to fire up the Tuscany Demo and party like it’s 2013!

Mr_SunnyBones

and the unreal castle rollercoaster!!

drewp05

Just waiting on that power cord to come in

[deleted]

So, it’s an Oculus Thrift?

aaadmiral

Quick play Ghosts of Hogwarts!

UnlimitedButts

Damn nice find. Thing is a relic

Mobanite08

Cool!

tjv82c

I backed the original Kickstarter and still remember the first time firing this up…. RiftCoaster made a LOT of my friends sick 😂

sparkyblaster

That walking in the garden thing made me sick. Never found what that was called as I never set it up.

tjv82c

Tuscany - https://youtu.be/PKoSALEaV28 I remember using this with a Razer Hydra with this.

DIESELANDBRUTUS

That was a lucky find pal

gzmask

it's indeed luckey palmer found

[deleted]

"Here, *you* throw this away..."

[deleted]

Ones on sale near me for $1.50 rn

drewp05

You gotta get it. Just as a cool thing to have as an oculus user

HiFiPotato

A nice piece of history! Good find :)

comfort_bot_1962

:D

Junkratmainguy

"That belongs in a museum!"

oculus

This is what a level 3 loot-crate looks like IRL

Joelthegreat0

good find lucky!

gypster85

Palmer?

goof320

one of these would be sick for a display piece

octavio989

oh my god 5$ for history

hmnrbt

Holy.. I need to keep my eyes peeled if these are starting to pop up in thrift stores

WhenYouFeatherIt

I'm so jealous. It's history.

RedLineJoe

I have a mint condition dk1 with all the original cables that I want to sell. I just haven’t got around to posting it on eBay.

pixxelpusher

Just keep it. When VR and AR become mainstream and everyone is wearing them like we use phones today it will be worth more as the device that started it all.

RedLineJoe

Do you live under a rock? Facebook owns Oculus. I have a Quest 2. Have you seen these Facebook groups for VR? The normies are into VR hard. look at the discord for Reddit VR, it’s full of them. Look at the numbers, with the Quest 2 anytime, anywhere VR, streaming PCVR, we’re living in a great time and the dev kit 1 of all things is just a paper weight. I’m not getting a bunch money for an a Atari 2600 either. What exactly are people with that mentality waiting for to accept VR has hit the masses or “mainstream”? What company needs to do what thing or what magic number needs to be reached for this milestone to be reached? The Gear VR numbers are insane. Just add up all the various VR platforms there are. The only companies left are ones who stopped innovating a long time ago. Apple, Microsoft, etc.

pixxelpusher

What? Why so salty? I’ve been in VR since day 1. My post was about this device (DK1) being a piece of history, the device that started it all so is worth keeping as a collectors item. I didn’t say it’s worth keeping to use. The first commercial mobile phone the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x can fetch up to $5000 these days. Sadly VR or AR isn’t mainstream yet, do you see everyone walking around in the street wearing them? People using them like they use mobile phones today? Do the majority (ie over 50%) of the population have one? That is the point in time I’m referring to, maybe in 40-50 years. It’s at that point in time the DK1 will fetch a decent price as being the device that started it all.

vawksel

The Apple I (one) is selling for $1.5 million dollars. https://9to5mac.com/2021/01/29/rare-apple-1-computer-built-by-steve-jobs-and-wozniak-on-sale-for-1-5-million-on-ebay/ You could argue the first Apple computer is a paper weight. And you are correct. A paper weight worth, $1.5 million dollars.

LOL, comparing Apple 1 to Oculus Dev Kit 1. You couldn't make a further stretch if you were Stretch Armstrong himself. Only on Reddit will you find someone so insane and out of their mind that they compare something so rare as the Apple 1 to the Oculus Dev Kit 1. Wow, wow, wow, wow. My mind is blown. This person deserves a reward that doesn't even exist. I almost broke my mouse blocking this one. Dang, that was harmful. Oculus Dev Kit 1 == Apple 1. Steve Jobs just rolled over in his grave. What you fail to mention is the details, "The reason for the price? It was built by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak themselves."

RedLineJoe

This guy must honestly think that every Oculus Dev Kit 1 was hand-built by Palmer Lucky himself. Even if it was, it would be worth nothing additional. You can't compare Palmer Lucky to Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. That's just ign0rant. Nobody should go this full tard.

UnExwfaQyi

My thrift stores charge 15$ for a pair of kid pants. That's more expensive than a new pair at Target and double the price of Walmart. lol. I stopped going.

Doctor_Woo

Wow, the DK1 was my first introduction to VR, it was a Matrix style bullet time demo and then I was out in my own personal cinema with the OG Dawn Of The Dead playing. We've come a long way.

bernzyman

I think i read somewhere that it’s compatible with HL2’s beta VR mode

Pseudotm

Insane find grats man

ThreeBirdBeard

You won the thrift store lottery!

[deleted]

I mean this in the nicest way.. I hate you.

Ralseiisprecious

It's insane how far we've come.

no_memes_here_chief

Insane find, although I do wonder why someone would give a dk1 to a thrift store instead of selling it on ebay for more then 10x the price?!

NudityMiles

Bruh that kicks my best SH find on the floor. I found almost new Timberlands worth 180$ for about 2.50. That's insanely awesome. That is a true tech relic. I always imagine draggin out my CV1 when I'm old and going like: 'Ah, good times, one of the very first vr sets' \*dusts off and plugs in\* 'And still got the juice!' \*Kids stare in marvel mixed with utter disgust bcuz old stuff\*

pixxelpusher

Definitely a collectors item worth keeping. I have a mint one that’s still in its cardboard post box, never been used.

SgtBanana

I have a mint DK1 as well. DK1s in general are becoming rarer and rarer each year. DK1 units that are in mint condition will be exceedingly rare if they aren't already. I have no intention of parting with mine any time soon.

pixxelpusher

Same, going to be a family heirloom in 50 years time :)

drewp05

I’m really pissed that I broke one of the clips that holds the face cover on to the headset. It didn’t come with everything anyway, but the headset is basically worthless now

SgtBanana

I wouldn't worry about it too much man. It still has intrinsic value as one of the first viable VR headsets in industry history. A broken clip is no big deal compared to, say, screen burning. It may not have even been your fault. These are pre-production units and there are bound to be QC issues with mold/plastic strength. I think people were having issues with those clips immediately after release.

[deleted]

Nice. I gave mine away to a coworker, didn't realize they had any value :D

rabid_briefcase

Realistically their only value is a low-res stereoscopic display. The DK1 had a 1280x800 display with a strong screen door effect, very rough motion detection of rotation but not translation (you can turn your head but can't move). It can't be used with any of the controllers or modern devices. The games mostly used a gamepad to play at your desk, or WASD+mouse at your desk. Motion sickness was common. I hated using it at the studio, we only had a few to pass around. DK1 quickly gave me headaches so I passed it along to other developers and just focused on gameplay. DK2 was far better tracking and display, but still incompatible with controllers or other modern stuff. A few games may still work with gamepad support only, but it's a rare thing.

CanonOverseer

They'll still have value as a collectors item in like 20 years you'll have much more advanced VR and you'll still have where it all started in your collection

[deleted]

Yeah, DK1 was basically what Carmack called an "existence proof". It was enough to see and be excited by the promise of it, it demonsrate conclusively that it could be done, even if the DK1 wasn't there yet.

sparkyblaster

It was a strong start all things considered.

[deleted]

[удалено]

rabid_briefcase

You must have misunderstood. Most of the oculus ecosystem has the controllers go through the headset's data system. This isn't compatible with any of the Oculus controller systems like the Touch controllers. As mentioned, external controllers such as gamepads and keyboard/mouse work. If you have an external spatial controller it is entirely separate from and unrelated to the DK1.

sparkyblaster

Yeah the DK 1 has no room scale at all so nothing to track where the controllers are in relation to your head.

NightofTheLivingZed

Was that really all it was capable of? That makes me hopeful for a super fast growth in technology in this medium... Hope my wallet can keep up.

rabid_briefcase

It was developed through 2012 and 2013, and released in January 2014. It's been more than 7 years, and yes, there has been a lot of growth. It was clearly announced as early prototype hardware that was going to be incompatible with future prototypes and final commercial hardware. DK2 had a lot of better tracking including positional tracking, and a better display, but still didn't support controllers. The first Rift (also called CV1) launched in March 2016 and didn't include controllers either, so the Vive was ahead of it launching a few months earlier with spatially-aware controllers. The Touch controllers were compatible with CV1 and later, first shipping in December 2016, more than a year later than the Vive's controller (August 2015).

sparkyblaster

Common? I got sick on that after 5 min even when I tried it again 6 months ago. Do you mean the original low res has value and not the DK1 with revised display or did you mean only valued as a low res stereoscopic display?

drewp05

I have a habit of breaking everything I touch, and what do you know. I broke one of the clips that holds the face pad on. It’s not like ruined, but some light might come in through the side while I’m playing, and the value definitely just went way down

neccoguy21

Ahh, OP... I feel for ya. Sucks, man.

drizztmainsword

I have mine sitting in its box in the basement hoping to be a valuable collector’s item one day…

[deleted]

[удалено]

needle1

The first publicly released Oculus Rift developer kit. The thing that kicked off this whole VR renaissance.

drewp05

It was basically the first rift. If you watch some old markiplier videos you can see him use it

[deleted]

where? please say there's one in cincinnati

drewp05

I’m in Massachusetts, and there was only one in the shop, but you can find them on eBay for around $60-$80

[deleted]

wow they are cheap! i think i might get one when i get a better pc

drewp05

They don’t have 6dof so it’s basically just a phone ve but with some cool demos

[deleted]

does it atleast have controllers? or something i COULD use as controllers like the quest 2?

Cloudmaster12

Nope, your better off just buying a cv1 for pcvr on lower end pcs.

[deleted]

i know stuff about building pcs but not the big smart people stuff, so what is a cv1?

Cloudmaster12

The original oculus rift, the fully released version that is. Basicly the upgrade of this headset here, you can find them for about 200 dolars or so right now I think. If you buy one make sure your pc is powerful enough (you dont need much to run the headset only have about1080x1200 per eye. Quest 2 for example has 1920x 1920, almost double the res and requiring a beefy pc to run games at max resolution. Also make sure your pc has the following, a HDMI port, 3 USB 3.0 or more if using 3 or more sensors. I recomend anything better than a gtx 1650 t p as a card to run the headset from.

sparkyblaster

I actually recommend a Quest 1/2 if your pc isn't the powerful but is new enough to run it. The Quest's will stabilize the image even if your frame rate drops. I'm able to play games at like 20fps and not feel sick. Cant say the same for when I had a dell WMR headset.

sparkyblaster

This isn't what you are looking for. This predates controllers. if you can believe such a thing. Buy a cheap windows mixed reality headset or original Rift.

drewp05

You can buy this thing that only super rich people had called the razor hydro and use those as motion controllers, it might even work on steamvr today

OXIOXIOXI

Go find those demos people made of stuff like Zelda. And stop laying it in the grass outside.

drewp05

It was only in the grass because I was walking back home with it. Also I don’t think the grass will do anything to the case that hasn’t already been done

anthonyd5189

I'd throw the DK1 away and keep the case, that's worth $5 for sure.

mabuxy

What is that?

[deleted]

[удалено]

drewp05

Not the latest one, but if you look on this sub you can find the old versions that support it

sparkyblaster

Yeah beta 0.8 or something. It got updated to work with windows 10 at least but you lost support for overclocking of its display. Shame. You can't have the beta and the current runtime installed at the same time though.

kelpfrylmao

Does it work tho?

drewp05

I’ll have to see. My power cord doesn’t come in until tomorrow

Altephfour

I want to find the DK1 case just to put my Oculus Quest 2 in. I have it actually but I want to keep my original DK1 with its original case. If anyone knows a good place to find one let me know. I check ebay occasionally but they're always pricey or want the whole system when I only want the case.

sparkyblaster

Tempting idea but mine is mint condition so I dont think I could. Id also have to start from scratch with the foam.

nooby2neo

$5??? Nice catch dude ! I can’t even find a game boy advanced at 5 dollars any more xdd

Acceptable_Can2767

Does it work?

drewp05

I don’t know yet

The_Starving_Autist

what is this?

drewp05

Back when oculus was a small company they came out with these development kits for testing and creating demos. They were available to consumers but you need a really good pc and the headset was expensive so only you tubers and developers had them. If you watched markiplier or jacksepticeye back in the day you’d recognize one of these immediately

WVdOQkFX

\>only you tubers and developers had them lol, not true. anyone could buy one of these. they had a kickstarter and then later sold them directly. i still have mine and i'm not a youtuber or dev.

drewp05

I said consumers could buy them, but nobody really had them

WVdOQkFX

i really had one. thousands of us had the DK1 in this sub, and most weren't devs or youtubers.

sparkyblaster

Ye old google cardboard essentially.

[deleted]

So old you have to sign in with FaceMash

[deleted]

Wow

ZachF8119

Yeah they have no resale value atm and I couldn't get it to run on my current rig. If youre happy that's good.

drewp05

For $5 this thing would be cool as like a display piece. If I can get it to work I’ll be ecstatic.

ZachF8119

I just dont have space since i got it 2012-2013\~ I moved it 7 times and once kit 2 came out it became unusable.

drewp05

There’s a couple posts on here with older runtime releases, and a guide on how to get it to run

ZachF8119

Well I wish you luck. I remember trying to load a blender game to do a shit roblox style vr thing high school was fun.

comfort_bot_1962

You're Awesome!

One-fun-dude

DK! Donkey Kong! Oh- wait.

ITriedLightningTendr

I always wonder how stuff like that makes it to those places. You could have ebay'd it for $50

Niko_47x

That's worth the money for the case alone.

sakipooh

Stuff like this makes me think a fellow VR pioneer has passed on :(

jib_reddit

I tried a DK1 at flight sim convention in 2013 and was nearly sick after 2 mins. I was so used to 6Dof with Trackir that when I moved my head up to look outside the front window of the plane and there was no 6Dof my stomach instantly lurched into my mouth 2/10, would not tray again.

VRGator

They had a nice case!

ItsJoeyG

Wow

realmatterno

I have a DK1 and a DK2 that were both not much used with every cable. You know what these are worth?

drewp05

With everything in the box in good condition it’s probably worth around $80-$100

pixxelpusher

Just keep them. They’re a part of history and will be worth something in the future.

Erasor83

Sad you need Windows 95 for it to run

drewp05

I was able to get the configuration demo to run, but I’m still troubleshooting to get some old demos to work

SkarredGhost

\[Macklemore music starts\]

Adem92foster

You're joking
