Super cool!! For someone with zero piano experience, I think showing proper hand placement / appropriate finger to hit the notes would help a lot. This is exciting!
Love the feedback. I think the potential on the instruction side of things is the real game changer. But to get people to continue to play, the core game functionality has to be super engaging and awesome in its own right. That's this release. Hoping for many more to come :D
would you be able to make it “pause” the note tracks until the right note is pressed? I like this about a similar upcoming game for a different instrument.
According to the dev’s Twitter there are three modes. Practice mode is basically the functionality you are talking about. The other two are more “Guitar Hero”-like.
Why are you asking for this when it's shown, that's what's happening, in the very first AND second clip?No it's not active through all of them, but come on, the very first and second one is pausing and waiting for the right buttons to be hit. And another here and there does it too.. use your damn eyes people :-P
I have that feature like 90% done. I tried automating the estimations for which finger to hit which note, and it felt very jarring when it was wrong. I might have to manually note them all for the default songs. If that feature is heavily requested, I can add it back in
It was my first thought as well.
Another idea you might want to consider - an option to only move the “timeline” forward after the student has played something. (“Played the right notes” is probably too difficult - just move after it detects sound.)
I love this concept!
No. The numerous other creators who have previously made implementations of this fairly basic concept, still have access to their own implementations; also other creators can still do it in the future.
So far. There’ll be more. Hopefully for the recorder, the devil’s flute, that horrid instrument with which millions of junior schoolchildren torment their parents and neighbours. Imagine a recorder app that the kid practiced in VR, *silently*.
And touch-typing. And calligraphy. And pottery. What exactly is your problem with AR learning apps? The more the better. And just as this one looks better than VRtuos, there’ll be others for the piano better than this one.
Firstness is not bestness.
Unless you've personally installed and used both apps you have no business saying this looks better than VRtuos. There is *nothing* about this that makes it better than VRtuos. It's a clone of an app someone made months ago and distributed *for free* and this guy is called a "genius" for copying it.
Hey everybody! I'm really excited to roll out this app I've been working on the last few months. I'll start sending out invites for Early Access next week. You can join the waitlist here: https://www.pianovision.app
Also, here's my twitter thread explaining some details: https://twitter.com/ZachaReid/status/1491787025728434178
Hey everybody! Watch [VR youtubers review VRtuos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvpfeJbwHr0) from five months ago, the app this app copied without adding anything innovative to it.
Frankly OP’s looks better. No need to put stickers on your piano to find the keys and the keys are highlighted in the hand color you’re supposed to press them with as the note is coming down, which would definitely make it easier to hit the correct keys
No and neither is OP's. It relies on the Quest 2 passthrough API which uses the Oculus SDK. VRtuos is on sidequest though, so you're sideloading an APK and it's not going through Facebook's store.
These comments should earn a ban. Yeah, we know Facebook is terrible. But you're on r/oculus. You knew what you bought and from who when you got one. If you didn't get one, then what are you doing here?
Not the one you're replying to, but I've both been subscribed here since and bought my first Oculus headset before they were purchased by Facebook. I think it's perfectly reasonable to express an anti-Facebook stance here.
not really
AR (this) is adding a HUD over reality. Good for lots of applications for day to day life, learning, etc
VR is blackout isolating and transports you to another world. Not nearly as good for trainig, though there are some applications for that (eg; pilot training) but much MUCH better as an entertainment medium than AR which is gimicky at best for gaming/entertainment consumption
Certainly depends, everything has its place I think. This is a great AR education use case but VR certainly has a place for heavy machinery training and things like that. Don't want someone anyone near something that could harm them or others.
You should talk to Yousician. This is basically an AR version of what they're doing. I've been using their app for the last few months and really love it. If I could also use their large library of songs and training sessions in a Quest app to compliment the desktop and iPad app it would be amazing.
Except last I checked (so may have changed) VRtuos had no passthrough, and only allowed notes to come down vertically (from above you and a bit ahead, essentially), which made it tricky for new players to track which note was coming before it got to the keyboard. It also didn't have a great selection of music for new players. That's why competition is good.
I linked VRtuos passthrough videos at least twice in this thread.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGk8_n0iyas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvpfeJbwHr0
It also loads an arbitrary number of midi files to learn anything you want.
As I said, it may have changed since I last used it. Thanks for the update.
Also, not my job to watch all your posts in this thread. Most people don't read every single comment on a post. The files it comes with are good songs, but terrible for beginners. I don't know which songs this clone comes with, so wasn't comparing them there.
You might already know but in VRtuos you can add any midi file yourself. You can find them for most popular piano pieces via a Google search. Complex MIDI files with multiple instruments won’t be suitable of course.
Yeah, just tried that app. Wish I'd seen the other response. No pass through. Not even any sound or real tutorial unless you have a midi keyboard.
I'll keep looking forward to what this guy does.
I've linked videos of VRtuos passthrough multiple times thinking people were capable of googling it but apparently you aren't. So [here's a video of it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGk8_n0iyas) and [here's a direct link](https://sidequestvr.com/app/5785/vrtuos-passthrough-beta) to the app, which the developer made available *for free* and OP still copied.
Sorry I didn't dig through your comment history to find your links.
I did just install this and saw nothing about pass through options.
Is that only available on the side loaded beta or did i just miss it on the applab version?
I have that feature like 90% done. I tried automating the estimations for which finger to hit which note, and it felt very jarring when it was wrong. I might have to manually note them all for the default songs. If that feature is heavily requested, I can add it back in sooner
Yeah I actually read that when I was coming up with the name lol. I'm pretty happy with the name PianoVision anyway. Especially as AR headsets move closer to glasses
This is awesome! I coculd play the piano as a kid, completely forgot most of it, but once a year I tell myself I'll try and teach myself again - hoping it's still in the fingers heh.
This would be an epic way to do it!
This is super cool-I wonder what the process of adding songs is? Is it a fixed set of music that the app developer needs to configure, or is it possible for a user to upload something like a PDF or finale file of other music?
The red/blue distinction is for the hand. and as for the fingers, I have that feature like 90% done. I tried automating the estimations for which finger to hit which note, and it felt very jarring when it was wrong. I might have to manually note them all for the default songs. If that feature is heavily requested, I'd add it back in
This is the most interesting VR thing I've seen yet. When are synths coming along an virtual studios?
Well done to you. This is what AR is about to me.
What's the difference between this and VRtuos which has been out for probably a year now? I don't particular like software that copies other software 1:1. -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGk8_n0iyas
It absolutely isn't. This is nothing like Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Also, VRtuos accepts custom midis and has a desktop companion app that connects to your midi keyboard to pause until you play the correct notes. OP has copied them exactly.
Edit: Also, both you and OP work in the bay area. I highly doubt your defense of him is a coincidence. Wouldn't be surprised if you're an alt even.
Holy shit, TWO redditors in a technology based subreddit work in the bay area? There's no fucking way that's possible! They have to be the same account.
As a piano player for multiple years and counting... it's interesting, and if it sparks interest for my favourite instrument I'm all for it. My suggestions would be please try to learn them sheet music at some point, because it is very important. And perhaps every now and then tips for correct posture etc.
I think it's a neat idea but for the people who have zero experience - a teacher will always be the best.
I'm looking to add sheet music pretty soon. I'm starting with this base fun dynamic to make the core of the experience enjoyable. But my goal forsure is to build out an instructional experience.
God i hate sheet music, as a guitarist. To me, tab + tunings is sufficient because any time i look at a note on top of or below the treble cleft it's like "OK count the lines, then figure out the timing, then find the note on my guitar".. takes forever to pick it up, and my memory's so crap i don't retain it unless i play the same piece over and over ad nauseum, which i can't because i'm kinda ADHD and my hobbies get a max of 15 minutes tops before i get bored
A virtual piano is the sort of thing that sounds nice in theory, but in practice trying to play an instrument that requires so much manual dexterity without feeling the keys would be almost impossible.
Put myself on the list. I’ve got a keyboard and a baby grand that don’t get enough love. This could be perfect for a casual (like 3/10 skill) player like me who can’t read sheet music.
I know it’s not quite as simple, but I’d love something like this for drums. I figure you’d have to map each drum so the software knows where everything is. Would be cool to hookup an electronic drum kit to it.
So for AR stuff on the Oculus - it seems like the experience would be much better if the hardware was equipped with a real full-color camera in addition to the one for image recognition (and displayed for the user vision experience). Following with great interest… I will literally buy a device to play this with once it’s a bit more polished. I’ve been waiting for this exact sort of thing to come. There’s iPad apps that do something similar (FlowKey comes to mind), but the actual note to key thing is the killer part for me.
As a VR enthusiast, I love it! This is some wonderful use of passthrough.
As a pianist, I kinda hate it. Learning piano this way will teach you to play like a robot, much like Synthesia. Playing the piano well/properly is a LOT more than just hitting the right key at the right moment. But used as a tool to aid practice, learn chord shapes/voicings, etc., it could be really helpful. I hope that some instruction is given to fingering, technique, posture etc. as well as just instructing you which keys to play. I wonder if the updates to hand tracking would help with that side of things.
Good luck OP, looks like a cool project!
This is pretty dope. I could see it being really useful to learn a song through rote repetition, but am a little skeptical about using it to learn how the theory works… but then again, a lot of people just want to be able to bang out a few cool songs.
Cool! I have a BMus, doing MMus (not piano haha) piano is soooo hard for me. I would definitely use this to see if it would help me learn or keep the piano skills I learned in my undergrad!
Super cool!! For someone with zero piano experience, I think showing proper hand placement / appropriate finger to hit the notes would help a lot. This is exciting!

Scales and their respective chord inversions would be a great add. Awesome concept though. Excited to see how this improves over time

This. Especially for younger children, just finding the right cord/key is a practice, and it'll help the feeling of success.
It seems like it does that already, you can see near the start of the video that happening a few times.
According to the dev’s Twitter there are three modes. Practice mode is basically the functionality you are talking about. The other two are more “Guitar Hero”-like.
Yup I do that!

Start a gofundme or investment page. Love to help out or invest. Musical instrument learning with VR seems like a game changer.
I'll DM you some material later. There are some books I used while learning that makes scales and such interesting/engaging.
Wait actually please do this
\#metoo is that how to use that hashtag :D

sorry to bother you but the windows download button on the website gives you an apple disc image file instead of a .exe or other windows formats.
Appreciate it! I meant to disable those buttons until I start rolling out the early access next week. Thanks for the heads up!
oh ok i'm signed up for the early access anyway, guess I'll have to dig the keyboard out of my wardrobe now.
I signed up

Gotta go ...and sign up. And yes I know that was horrible
Is it going to be available for platforms not owned by Facebook?
If any other platforms add passthru similiar to quests that might one day be possible
This is what VR should be used for: learning and training
Yep this is what AR should be used for.
we should really just call it all XR, VR and AR are evidently two sides of the same coin
> XR, VR and AR are evidently two sides of the same coin Th.. Thanks for saying that. I can finally *visualize* it..
not really AR (this) is adding a HUD over reality. Good for lots of applications for day to day life, learning, etc VR is blackout isolating and transports you to another world. You know what'd really be cool? AR for teaching and learning.
Is it suitable for a complete noob who doesn't even know what fingers to use on which keys?
100%. No lie, I was pretty much a complete noob like 2 months ago
You should talk to Yousician. This is basically an AR version of what they're doing. I've been using their app for the last few months and really love it. No use to me but, I got hand tracking going and was much nicer to deal with. Keep being you. Cheers.
My son has been taking piano lessons for a few years and he loves VR. This would be the perfect tool for him. Thank you for developing it!
My pleasure! DM me if you want early access or add yourself to the list here at https://www.pianovision.app/
Just requested access! Looks awesome!
Color coding for proper finger placement would be a cool extra.

This is amazing!! Will it work on an Oculus Rift S?
Piano Hero
I considered naming it that, but it was a little too on the nose 😆

This is super cool-I wonder what the process of adding songs is? Is it a fixed set of music that the app developer needs to configure, or is it possible for a user to upload something like a PDF or finale file of other music?
It's a fixed set to start with, but I allow you to upload MIDI files as well
Woah, I’ll have to try this! Thanks for posting.
turn learning piano into DDR.
Love this, joined the waiting list...
this is so sick.
This is brilliant. Take my money.
This is awesome OP!
Thanks!
I think each note should have the correct hand and finger number on it. Other than that, this looks great!

Finally! I’ve been wanting something like this for the passthru camera for awhile. Is this going to be available for other VR platforms?
I only have a Quest 2 right now. Is there another platform you'd like to see it supported that has passthrough?
I NEED THIS
Looks amazing, really well done. Looking forward to trying it out!

I’m thinking probably. I might restrict some features to a paid version since I’m working on this full time

Wow!
Waitlist submit button is broken in website. Says “oops! Something went wrong” etc.
Hmm really? Can you try again? I didn’t have an issue
This is so cool
Fuck this is so awesome
I hope there is for RiftS users
This is something else, wow!
wait - is this only for Quest 2 or will it be available for the 1?
Can you imagine the next Chopin saying they learned how to play thru VR?
I'M GETTING A QUEST 2 NOW
Oh wow I need this

Maybe my beatsaber skills would come to some use afterall 👀
Just a question: would we be able to use any piano with this or similar apps already on the store?
Love what you're doing here!
I am in! Where is it?
Sign up for the early access waitlist here: https://www.pianovision.app/
Too much friction. If you want to learn piano, just play piano every day.
I Can't wait to start playing the piano with this!
This is what Ive been waiting for.
Oh wow. I’ve been waiting for something like this. Can the tempo be adjusted? And can we add MIDI files to it?
Yup! You can play between .25x and 1x. And yeah I have a desktop companion app to connect your midi keyboard and to really easily upload new MIDI
Cool! Will it be playable only on augmented reality or there will be a virtual piano for those who don't own it?
A virtual piano is the sort of thing that sounds nice in theory, but in practice trying to play an instrument that requires so much manual dexterity without feeling the keys would be almost impossible.
Yeah this, plus hand/finger tracking isn't good enough yet. Maybe some haptic feedback gloves in the future would enable this
This is AWESOME! Compatible with just the quest2?
This is absolutely incredible!!
I need this!!
This is awesome. I wanna go get my piano tuned now
Really cool! Does it work with a keyboard opposed to a piano?
Yup, a MIDI keyboard is preferred
Would it be coming to rift models as well?
will there be custom music support
yeah you can upload custom MIDI files
This is amazing.
Is that Sideload?
For now, yea
Will this work with any size keyboard controller?
I support all the main sizes. If I don’t support yours, lmk and I’ll add it
A good use case. We need these for all instruments and every other skill. There needs to be more educational apps in VR that have been gamified.
If I had all the time in the world, I’d be simultaneously doing this for first drums and then guitar
Wow, now that's cool
I signed up on the website. Will it work with Yamaha synthesiser?
I’ve been waiting to see this played. I will be officially getting this one for my headset.
Does it support midi to only progress when the key is hit? Wireless midi is possible, even in Unity. Talk to me if you need any help with that aspect.
Is this also useable for a keyboard?
As a rhythm gamer, this is genius. Time to learn the piano!
How much configuration does this require to properly track on the piano? Like for different sized keyboards, different heights, etc?
Looks cool is their a way to import custom sheets?
I am not finding this on the Oculus Store for my Quest 2? Am I needing to do something else?
The fact that he didn't play Still Dre is a fucking travesty... Such a missed opportunity.
Does this require midi data streaming to the headset, or is it based off of some combination of camera/microphone input?
I want this for drums!
Well. This is awesome.
Put myself on the list. I’ve got a keyboard and a baby grand that don’t get enough love. This could be perfect for a casual (like 3/10 skill) player like me who can’t read sheet music.
One of the best use cases I've seen with for passthrough. Honestly I hope to see more applications like this that enable literal hands on learning.
How do you tell when a key is pressed? Visually or sound? Curious as a Developer who has not tried AR stuff yet.
I know it’s not quite as simple, but I’d love something like this for drums. I figure you’d have to map each drum so the software knows where everything is. Would be cool to hookup an electronic drum kit to it.
This is awesome.
Welp. I thank (blame) you for forcing me to push the BUY button in Amazon.
So for AR stuff on the Oculus - it seems like the experience would be much better if the hardware was equipped with a real full-color camera in addition to the one for image recognition (and displayed for the user vision experience). I'm not too versed in VR... is this something that has been experimented with or used in other headsets?

Coming to SideQuest hopefully very soon and App Lab as well.
This is pretty dope. I could see it being really useful to learn a song through rote repetition, but am a little skeptical about using it to learn how the theory works… but then again, a lot of people just want to be able to bang out a few cool songs.
A great piano instruction app needs a great mechanic at its core. That's what this release is aiming for. The theory part is to come :)
Cool I look forward to seeing it!
Yooo is this open source? I'd love to contribute or create songmaps/lessons using this (free and open, ofc)
Is it laggy? Looks laggy
The lag you see is the notes stopping for you to play them. In competitive mode, there's no lag
That's smart. What a clever idea
VERY excited about this until I remembered I don't have a piano or keyboard anymore.
Where can I get that??

I would buy a quest just for this
Wow... this looks amazing. How do I sign up for a beta?

Cool! I have a BMus, doing MMus (not piano haha) piano is soooo hard for me. I would definitely use this to see if it would help me learn or keep the piano skills I learned in my undergrad!
I got so excited for this I went to the store to buy it only to find it isn't on there yet lol
I'd love more information on how to get this and what I can do to try this out.

Is this on applab?
Not yet
100% profit to be made from this tech…
I might be able to play piano with this.
Was just wondering yesterday if there's an app out there like this yet. Awesome!
I wish this existed for guitar but I can only imagine how much more difficult implementing it could be
Much more difficult, but doable with a lot of work I think
like Beat Saber, but with purpose. I am looking forward for where AR will bring us in a few years with stuff like this transparent overlay displays
I want to try this! I’ve never played. But this looks fun.
