the price we pay for these beasties! i literally have 4 of these left in cocoons in my kitchen from years past. one day last year a cocoon opened up with a gorgeous swallowtail - so worth it.
I thought they already had! They were all hunched up and still yesterday, but then I was excited to see them moving again today. Maybe they needed a pre-chrysalis snack.
We have several sacrificial dill plants specifically for these guys.
They also like fennel btw, if you wanna move them to something else to save your dill
Pickles is also the name of the pickerel frog that lives in the rock wall in my backyard! So I guess today's lesson is that all wildlife is potentially named Pickles.
You can grow dill, so lucky. Dill is my favorite seasoning, but where I live, it's damn near impossible to grow outside, and the times I've tried to grow it inside have been a total failure.
I used to hatch butterflies when I was a kid. It's pretty fun and super interesting. You know what he likes to eat, so drop him in a jar with fresh dill every day, and before long, you'll get to see the whole process firsthand.
Pickles is eating the whole stalk instead of just chewing holes in everything? Pickles is okay in my book.
