Yes! There’s been at least one study looking at the affects of differing oxygen levels… it’s an interesting read: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/10/101029132924.htm
Bug size is strongly limited by atmospheric oxygen content because of the way they breathe. Animals with lungs can get way bigger, hence whales and elephants and shit. Humans might be able to get bigger with a more oxygen rich environment but I’m not sure, and it definitely wouldn’t be on the same scale as the bugs
I believe it has to do with how they have breathing holes that don’t force air in and out like our lungs do. So higher oxygen REALLY helps them, while mammals and other large organisms force their own respiration with muscles, so it wouldn’t make nearly the difference for us.
Source- some rando dumb guy on the interweb
Technically no, because our size isnt really limited by our capacity to breath right now, lungs are a pretty efficient system.
Im clearly not an expert, but insect are limited by oxygen level cause they breath with the help of tiny holes along their body that let oxygen in.
And like their is no "active" absorption of oxygen, the bigger they are, the longer is the distance that oxygen have to do in their body, its not a very effective way of breathing.
So the more oxygen their is, the more they can grow without worrying about breathing.
Hot temperature also help them, since it make the oxygen easier to absorb if i remember well, or something like this.
depends on the species, as goes with any invertebrate. not all tarantulas or scorpions or centipedes have the same potency of venom, but the ones that possess medically significant venom are no joke
I know folks are cracking jokes here but I actually saw this thing in real life. It somehow got on the back of one of domestic help we had hired.
All I can say is it was fascinating, horrifying and beautiful at the same time.
This thing is the most terrifying creature we have today. Ever see coyote get bite it. The way the legs can latch onto your skin is super creepy. The leg tips are like needles and they can sort of grip onto your skin and pull on it
What if your parachute didn't deploy and you ended up falling into a giant 600 foot vat filled with these things, squishing hundreds of them as they break your fall into the exact center of the vat while the other 950,000,000 of them start to take revenge on you
I seem to recall a manga many years ago of a world where insects suddenly grew to be astronomical proportions. They continue being themselves except now humans were now on the menu and it was messed up to see the predation that we would see in the insect world against each other now happening to humans who were small enough to be preyed upon. For me it was a big mind fuck.
I had not one, nor two, but three centipedes this size come into my house in Thailand in the period of 4 days.
One of the Thai guys I was living with at the time hacked away at the first two with a butcher knife and bbq fork, then attempted to burn them with a lighter and spray. The last one... idk because I hid upstairs. Then came the spiders. Cute guys, not dangerous, but way too big for my western sensibilities.
Fun fact, Chinese used to hunt them as a delicacy for grilling and used chickens to forage for them.
As described in the wuxia novel, Return of the Condor Heroes.
I saw a video of a centipede killing a snake, and a picture of a centipede that had been eaten by a snake and ate its way back out. I would stay as far away as I could.
Man, every time I see giant centipedes I'm reminded of the huge ones in the 2005 King Kong game that would hide the walls and shoot out at you. There's nothing odd about this, centipedes are fuckin horrifying
Where the hell is Steve O when we need someone to drop that down their pants? I already saw him staple his scrotum to his leg, so this would be a breeze!
Look, man. I live in Florida. I have dealt with all kinds of wildlife. I am understanding. I cup insects and put them outside. But this? I think I’d bring the fire, I have to be honest.
Getting ready for my colonoscopy and was wondering if the prep wasn’t working.
Then THAT THING succeeded in scaring the ACTUAL living shit outta me so thanks for that! 👍
Give it some more oxygen and we'd have a meterpede
Ugh… considering they can take down prey 15x larger than themselves, I’m thankful for the earth’s current O2 levels.
Has someone grown one of these in an oxygen tent? To determine what life would have been like in prehistoric times?
Yes! There’s been at least one study looking at the affects of differing oxygen levels… it’s an interesting read: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/10/101029132924.htm
Thanks!! Interesting both, that they didn’t obtain a size increase with cockroaches, and that they didn’t remark how big the dragonflies became.
how much more oxygen to make a kilomipede?
i-peed
ithinkkai-peed
Probably the level, the planet in dune had
Not yet comma, not yet.
Stop wishing for a Shai-hulud
Its already a decipede.
I'm guessing humans would also reach 10ft on average. Crazy to think of the possibility of such worlds out there in other solar systems.

This is very interesting. Why is it like that for bugs? More O2 means more aerobic respiration and more energy production for growth?

Seeing as you're clearly an expert on this beautiful beast and probably entomology in general.... ..will I die if it's antennae tickle me butthole
No. Source- trying it now
It’s been two hours. How much longer do we wait? I think we can make some assumptions here for whoever’s next
😂🤣😂
The real trick is exoskeleton vs skeleton

They are harmless and clean the opening to your urethra while you sleep.
i work in entomology and the answer is still no
I too know where words come from. (It's a joke).
this guy knows stuff about things
this guy exists
Absolutely yes.
r/thisguythisguys
stuff known about guy this
Also in Entomology... I took care of one of these once (it was a lab pet of sorts)... Never again
Aren’t centipedes venemous? Like, scorpion-sting level? Worse, maybe?
depends on the species, as goes with any invertebrate. not all tarantulas or scorpions or centipedes have the same potency of venom, but the ones that possess medically significant venom are no joke
They have modified front legs that act as poisonous fangs called Toxicognaths!
Nope nope nope nope nope
If I see that, I’m setting it on fire.
If I see that, I'm setting myself on fire.
Nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Hand it to me instead, centipedes are my faaaaavorite
Do you eat them with mustard?
I use a skillet, but you do you.
I know folks are cracking jokes here but I actually saw this thing in real life. It somehow got on the back of one of domestic help we had hired. All I can say is it was fascinating, horrifying and beautiful at the same time.
That’s a huge one but it’s shorter than half of an arm.
A baby's arm. Holding an apple.
And a goliath in the distance.
Left a rosebud in theeere for ya!"
A man measured it obviously
It's about 1.5 bananas
[удалено]
Lol he was rolling on the ground like he was trying to put out a fire🤣
To think bugs actually used to be bigger creatures is scary to think about they are small today but at one point some of them weren't
That's why we moved out of Africa, theoretically.
Give me the link gotta read about this.
Long before humans: https://owlcation.com/stem/The-Carboniferous-Period-When-Giant-Insects-Ruled-the-Land-and-Sky
The part about humans migrating because of them is bullshit.
Havin a really good experience with this creature right now ☺️
We need to give that bug some democracy \[up\] \[right\] \[down\] \[down\] \[down\]
Eagle one delivering payload!
Most of the time this sub is yo satisfy morbid curiosity. This is one of the raddest things I've seen on here!
Random animal minding their own business , Humans “ Grab the camera let’s fuck with it.”
To be fair if some animals were our size they’d do the same thing
You wanna say there is some dude, who've put this thing in his ureter or in his anus?
There are parts of the internet I won’t go to find that answer.
Sometimes ignorance really is bliss
Temple of Doom was definitely the best one
Ain't no 'oddly terrifying'. Terrifying. That's it.
Plated like a motherfuckin tank
Ok, I hated yellow jackets, and roaches, now I'll dream nightmares about centipedes like this one!!
Is that a normal movement of your arm hair or is something crawling on you?
r/absoluteunit
Come on Coyote Peterson. Take one for the team, bro.
Toss that one into someones tent at night....
Saten: “Well I just wanna say, that I’m a huge fan.”
Spicy segments!
give it to Coyote Peterson and let him test how the bite of this animal feels. brrrrr
I fought this guy in Elden Ring!
I love giant bugs, this is such a captivating and beautiful animal. I wonder what species this is? I’d love to keep centipedes this size someday
I would never get anywhere near one of these in person, but somehow watching them up close from a distance is fascinating and I love them.
Thanks for the nightmares! WTF!!??
“Let me show you something else as long as my forearm”
Man we need solid concrete armor for this kind of monstrosty
Damn nature you scary.
This thing is the most terrifying creature we have today. Ever see coyote get bite it. The way the legs can latch onto your skin is super creepy. The leg tips are like needles and they can sort of grip onto your skin and pull on it
Awesome
I'd give anything to hold it but if I remember correctly their poisonous or venomous
Nope rope….
Beautiful animal!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Look at this fucker. yikes.
How is this oddly terrifying? It’s nightmare stuff.
This sub is targeting me this morning I can see. First a giant spider and now this.
Oh HELL NO!!!😱
Australia ??
Australia?
“Scream! Scream for your lives, the Tingler is loose!”
This is the real scary centipedes, not the ones with short body with long legs
see this is why i own a gun, just in case if this insect crawling my legs i will shoot my head
Is this guy a creator? I'd like to see more of his stuff, anyone know the name or channel?
Damn it’s not even a bug anymore- it’s an animal
Bugs are animals! 🙂
nope nope and nope
^no
That’s given me the weebie jeezies, stuff made of nightmares.
That's not oddly terrifying, that's what the fucking fuck terrifying!
nah. nuh uh. mm mm. no thanks. goodbye.
Helllllllllllllllllllll noooooooooo
What if your parachute didn't deploy and you ended up falling into a giant 600 foot vat filled with these things, squishing hundreds of them as they break your fall into the exact center of the vat while the other 950,000,000 of them start to take revenge on you
I literally cannot say say the word "nope" enough.
How old would this centipede be and where would this be located?
Next moment, daddy centipide comes for his baby: https://youtu.be/1kgkDhfMONQ?si=-3OQdwAf7iQniW3U
Well, arm length is a bit of a stretch.
But is it edible?
What kind of baby arms do you have?
*proceeds to bring it back home and named it Timmy*
(Fore)arm length centipede with
Forearm length
Things not even scared
That dude is right. Scary. And I’m sure it can get in anywhere
There’s absolutely nothing “oddly” terrifying about that…
I seem to recall a manga many years ago of a world where insects suddenly grew to be astronomical proportions. They continue being themselves except now humans were now on the menu and it was messed up to see the predation that we would see in the insect world against each other now happening to humans who were small enough to be preyed upon. For me it was a big mind fuck.
Location?
Nothing odd about this being terrifying
Nope.
“Arm length”… He compares with his hand in the damn video.
I had not one, nor two, but three centipedes this size come into my house in Thailand in the period of 4 days. Only thing on here that ever made me physically cringe and pull back in disgust.
"I have no desire desire... to hold this thing." **literally a second later** "I wanna touch it." "Okay, i touched it." Bro is like a curious kid. 😂
Bugs typically don't bother me but these things freak me tf out.
You're supposed to remove these from your time machine BEFORE you return from the Carboniferous, goddammit.
Eat it
Bring out Frank's Red Hot Sauce right away my man! Wawawheeee!
r/nope
Kill it before it breeds
That's a very healthy looking noperope
I don’t want to live on this planet anymore
Throw it at your friend
Fun fact, Chinese used to hunt them as a delicacy for grilling and used chickens to forage for them. As described in the wuxia novel, Return of the Condor Heroes.
Gotta be Australia.
😏
i think theyre cool looking but i know damn well ill be running away if it does any sudden movements
If I was some young GI I’m Vietnam I’d 100% be killed after giving my position away dumping magazine after magazine at that thing…
What a cute specimen, I’m not gonna touch it, but it is cute either way
I saw a video of a centipede killing a snake, and a picture of a centipede that had been eaten by a snake and ate its way back out. I would stay as far away as I could.
"Giant tropical centipedes share their territories with tarantulas"
Reminder: Centipedes used to be bigger than this and would hunt down dinosaurs during prehistoric times.
You can meet jesus if you let it bite.
This is why humans invented nuclear arms
Let me guess...? Australia ?
Bear Grylls mouth is watering
Those things can move really really quickly and he was definitely in reach more than a few times
Is that the real tarzan
that thing probably slurps up snakes for dinner.
Man, every time I see giant centipedes I'm reminded of the huge ones in the 2005 King Kong game that would hide the walls and shoot out at you. There's nothing odd about this, centipedes are fuckin horrifying
I am disappointed that he haven't gotten bitten during this.
GOD NO!!! KILL IT WITH FIRE!! NOW! KILL IT
For those curious it's venomous so this guy has the right approach of using a stick
Australia right?
Throw it on the grill
Ye naw
Burn the entire country
Big boi
r/nope
Jessie and mike
I don't want to touch it. Kay, I touched it.
I got stung by green one they hurt and comes a goes like just gotten stung again over and over for about a day
Come on fuck that thing
I'll take the huntsman spider instead
THIS…..is where i draw my line! I’m killing it!
I bet he has a very painful bite. The centipede probably does too.
NOW PIN IT DOWN AND FORCIBLY PET IT UNTIL IT IS DOMESTICATED TEACH IT ABOUT HUMAN HUBRIS
STOP PUTTING YOUR ARM AND FINGERS SO CLOSE TO IT
.22 is enough to stop that thing.
The forbidden corndog
Hell nahh
Screw that
My definition of oddly is much different than yours.
Kill it with fire
Getting ready for my colonoscopy and was wondering if the prep wasn’t working. Then THAT THING succeeded in scaring the ACTUAL living shit outta me so thanks for that! 👍
I thought he would bite right into that thing
Definitely NO Rather handle a spitting cobra with no sunglasses on
Looks like my penis
That's gonna leave a mark.
