Wow how wonderful! I suppose there’s no way to tell, but wouldn’t it be one of those “six degrees of separation” things if they did know each other? ☺️
My late husband was a devoted patron of the museum. Also, on The Moth radio program, one of the "girl" fliers tells her story. She's in her 90s at the time the program was recorded, but is as sharp and engaging as can be. Those young women knew nothing about aviation but wanted to serve, and did they ever.
Ha! In the 50s, he wore these fabulous animal print button down shirts, always had a drink in his hand and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, and apparently could kick everyone’s ass at cards. He was a very stylish guy.
How cool! I grew up in the Bay Area and recognized the street lights right away! They still have those old street lights with the three globes on them. I don’t know too much about old street lights, but I do love old architecture and pay attention to old street lights in LA where I live now, and I have never seen any like that, and a quick search shows me New York had very different ones, so they might be exclusive to San Francisco.
Beautiful couple and your grandmother and her friends are just amazing 😻 so proud of them for serving our country. I hope they all had wonderful happy and successful lives. Are they still alive I hope 🤞👍❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹
Thank you, my grandmother lived until 2011. She outlived her friends pictured there, but kept in touch for the rest of their lives. My grandfather tragically died in 1960 or 61, he suffered from PTSD and drank heavily. He had a heart attack.
Their overcoats certainly are. But yes, they all served together. There were variations in duties that resulted in slight uniform differences, and to my knowledge, there were multiple clothing items in the official uniform, even including a pantsuit and a seersucker dress.
I love his fedora, strategically placed over one eye, like he was walking onto a yacht.
Ha! Incidentally, he served in the South Pacific in the Navy. Not *exactly* yachts. 😂
I personally believe that's when the people of our country were at their best. What an incredible time to be alive! Love the photos 🩷
Is your grandfather Indiana Jones? lol
😆 The rakish hat angle was the style de rigueur at the time. But you’re right; it’s very “Indie!”
So Humphrey Bogart!
Your Grandma was really valued as a friend - you can just see the warmth in her eyes! Gorgeous lady!
Thank you; you’re absolutely correct. She was the life of the party and had a wonderful, gentle-teasing sarcastic fun about her. A great friend. 🥰
My Grandma was a WAC stationed in San Francisco too!
Really?! Oh I’m SO curious if they knew each other…any idea what she did?
Yes! She drove a mail truck and chauffeured a general.

They all are gorgeous
There’s a really good museum in Sweetwater, Tx that chronicles the history of the women in the WASP unit.
How great! There are many W.A.C exhibits in multiple museums nationwide, but I believe the largest is in New Orleans.

The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion is a great story about some of the young women who were WW2 training pilots. It’s written by Fanny Flagg.
Your grand pappy is a cool mother effer!

Are they all WACs? Their uniforms look different.
