I had a similar experience, found myself playing far too late while at the same time complaining about lots of things. I think there's a lot of legitimate criticisms in the game, personally for me the characters just seemed far too much like they were written by a guy going through a mid-life crisis who just bought his first Harley, and some of the late-game encounters, especially against humans, are just not good. But you're right, The gameplay loop is just top-tier--dealing with zombies in an open world environment was incredibly well done. One of my favorite gaming moments comes from this game. When I had to attack an ambush camp with a locked gate. Took out the gaurds quietly but had to blow up the gates. I detonate the charges then hear a wierd noise and turn around to see one of the big zombies booking it right at me--alerted by the explosion. So I run into the camp, and sure I take a couple shots, but they turn their focus on the bruiser and I just sneak around to the back of the camp. Meanwhile the ambush camps unscilenced gunfire draws an entire horde onto them so I just sit there in a bush watching drifters, a bruiser, and a swarm all fight amongst each other. End of the day there were two swarmers to kill--everyone else had killed each other, so I got to clear the camp with no fighting, watch a massive brawl, get a shit ton of bounties, and a bunch of inventory from the camp. Really really fun way to have the environment work.

Biasanya

One of my best moments was having two big zombies beat each-other to death after defeating a whole camp. And also, after sneaking and crossbowing the whole game, I never used guns. They were just inferior. The crossbow damage upgrade made everything a 1-shot kill. But then I tried one of the lvl4 submachine guns and was surprised to see it was a 1 or 2 shot kill. So suddenly I could mow down entire hordes. That was super satisfying, and I was happy that I could finally enjoy the guns more. I guess a lot of people don't go the crossbow route. The stealth is good, but when you get the damage upgrade (and ingredients upgrade for crafting) it becomes godlike

bodaddy2003

I NEVER use the crossbow. Once you get to Tucker's camp and get the MWS, that's when you start kicking ass with guns.

WotSXlyf

Amazing

ho4X3n

I did the exact same thing at the same place, except I walked past the gate that you can blow up and kept tripping on the wire with the cans alerting the marauders and the small horde underneath them. The only "logical" choice was to rush straight into the camp lol

Ill_Tackle_5192

I hated this game, but I’m really happy that it found its audience. I look forward to Bend Studios next outing and hope it jives with me better.

Crumputer

I agree with this. The game had potential, but the dialogue and characters were insufferable. Deacon’s personality and motivations changed by the minute, and his need to shout his dialogue (even when I’m stealth) was weird. I did enjoy the gameplay, but the missions were all the same so I bounced after about 15 hours. The setting was well done, the combat more than passable, the upgrades worthwhile, and the hordes were unique.

Estus_but_hole

As to Deacon yelling when in stealth, I think the guys who were working on Deacon's lines triggering messed up a bit cause deek has plently of lines where he is grumbling below his breath but they never really show up whilst you're in stealth. Deek gets a bad wrap as a character for this. They could do with making sure quiet lines happen whilst he's crouched in a bush and his louder lines happen whilst he's treating rippers to the LMG, not the other way around.

Von-Konigs

I just finished it a few days ago. I short, I thought that the gameplay was fine - very safe, by the numbers, tried and tested open works formula. It works, the combat is fun, but I’ve played a hundred games like it, many that do it better. For me, the game fell down on the story, characters, tone and world. The story I found dull and incredibly predictable and the characters were either forgettable or dislikeable. The whole biker thing I find a bit cringey, like the main character is trying so, so hard to be a cool bad boy, he comes across like a teenager. He’s also just a dick to like 90% of people he talks to, and not in a way that he learns from and improves - he’s just a bellend. And the art style of the game, if you can call it that, was dull. A grey and brown world full of grey and brown enemies, with ideas I’ve seen a million times in zombie media. The only thing in the entire game that caught me by surprise was the reveal with O’Brian at the end of the epilogue - and that was a sequel hook, not a plot point, so it didn’t really matter in the end. I’m glad you liked it. I had fun playing it too. But for me it was a largely forgettable experience that pales in comparison to many other games in its style.

cliquealex

I know this comment is quite old and I usually don't respond to them but I'm curious — What similar games have you played?

OkamiNoOrochi

What I did not like about the beginning is that it somehow tries to tell you to massively use stealth while the gameplay evolved in a completely different direction. I would say it took me around 5 hours to start really enjoying it. And the best part is preserved in the second half of the game with hordes. In addition, the score-driven challenges you can access from title menu are really refreshing !

Puzzleheaded_Two5488

Personally I wouldnt say it's one of the best open world games ive ever played, but i did enjoy it quite a lot. Story was a tad too long but I liked most of the characters, and the twists and turns the story went through. Upgrading the bike was one of the highlights for sure, and I also really enjoyed going full survival mode early on (avoiding fast travel to save on gas, using guns sparingly, etc.) but later on saving resources becomes kind of pointless since you get so rich. Hated fighting the hordes (only completed the 2-3 you have to do for the story missions), but loved doing every other task on the map and completed all of them. I also played it on PC, and it really does look gorgeous. Bummed theres no sequel coming though, wouldve been a Day 1 purchase for me most likely.

HearTheEkko

I thought it was okay, nothing mindblowing. The only thing that stood out from it were the massive hordes which were fun to take down. I just wish there was more customization to Deacon, the weapons and the bike. Would've added a bit more replayability.

SomeRandomJoe81

I’ve played through it in its entirety 3 times now. Liked the characters and gameplay. The story was predictable but it was just fun. Would just cruise on my bike and clear NERO points and do side gigs. Never got into hunting down the hordes but cleared the ones I came across on my travels. Just wish there was more. Unfortunately, I think I saw an article saying there wasn’t going to be a second one because the first one didn’t do well enough. I could be wrong though. Would love to see where the O’Brian stuff goes.

Lu_lunaa

Really ? They said days gone was really successful

Flork8

days gone is one of my favourite games. it starts so slowly though too many people gave up on it. maybe they should’ve started with a big horde fight to give players a taste of what’s to come - a flash forward in the story or something.

SavonReddit

Super slow start, but amazing gameplay and story. Wish I could find more games like it.

mickeywalls7

I loved days gone as well. Characters were really good imo.

Equisapien004

It drags extremely hard in the beginning but it only gets better as it goes along. I was surprised how invested I was in the story by the end, but it did feel a full 20 hours too long for me.

NewExcersizee

Dying Light > Days Gone Dying Light's story is very memorable and touching imo, and the open world is done a lot better, especially Dying Light: The Following (dlc)

SpamtaroTime

I thought Days Gone was pretty solid. Played the game on the next to hardest difficulty and found the game to be well paced. Starting out, it really does feel like a good spooky survival horror experience; with the scarce ammo, and looting around for supplies. The fetch quests were a bit mundane, but the environments mixed with the surprise encounters, Deacon's narration, along with the element of things getting out of hand so quickly brought a lot of excitement. I loved looting around in the little city areas, gas stations and hideouts looking for supplies. The overall story was pretty good, with a twist or two I didn't see coming. If you play Days Gone like a game on rails, and just mindlessly smash through each quest and mission, and don't take the time to explore the world I think you're hindering the potential enjoyment of the game. Getting lost and in trouble was a lot of fun.

MilkyPsycow

You should try horizon zero dawn, it’s amazing

stockdeity

It's trash like days gone

MilkyPsycow

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, mine is different and you are 2 years late

stockdeity

It's better to be late and right over early and wrong 😂

SnooMuffins2764

Wow, what a long way of saying “ Hey, my standards for ‘open world’ video games are low.

AwesomeTheMighty

Wow, what a long way of saying "I'm a douche who thinks my opinions are more important than anyone else's." They liked a game that you didn't. Chill the fuck out.

SnooMuffins2764

Wasn’t an opinion, it’s simply a fact. Days gone promoted itself to something it ended up not being. Has massive potential and possibly the worst protagonist/ story line ever in a game. I’ll say the gameplay was decent and I put a few hours in but to say deacon is an amazing protagonist? The relationship with boozer? Are you kidding me?

AwesomeTheMighty

Everything you said was subjective, which is almost the opposite of a fact. Once again: you didn't like it and someone else did, and there's nothing wrong with that. Not everybody has to like everything. But deciding that your opinion is somehow "correct" and someone else's isn't is just ridiculous. There is nothing objective about the enjoyment derived from a video game - it's all opinions. I don't like mayonnaise, but I don't tell people that I'm right and they're wrong.

bunnyhat3

You should. Mayonnaise is disgusting.

AwesomeTheMighty

You're damned right it is. But my girlfriend loves it, so I've gotta play my cards right.

scrinivm

>"Wasn’t an opinion, it’s simply a fact. Has possibly the worst protagonist/ story line ever in a game." LOL that was a good one. Guy claims facts over opinions and then immediately throws a few opinions in. I say it's the best protagonist and story line ever in a game. Got a problem with my opinion? No one cares, and that's a fact :)

ohsinboi

You need to play some better games. Days Gone is abysmally boring with some of the shallowest gameplay and story ever made.

Shit_Bananas

Dude I've played hundreds of games, over 30 years. I've never platinumed a single one and only finish maybe a handful a year. Days Gone was one of those handful. Your opinion is not fact

Larrik

I was hoping for a motorcycle Mad Max, and that may be what it was, but I couldn’t play it once I it had you fight kid zombies with a bat. Like oof. Never touched it again.

[deleted]

I love motorbikes and zombies games/movies, so i had high hopes for this game. I didnt like it though, and stopped playing after about 5-10 hours. Its basically every generic open world and zombie game combined with a bad story and uninspiring voice actors. I did like some things about the game though, the motorbike upgrades and the refueling was a fun gameplay mechanic.

Brizzendan

I really did enjoy it. Love cruising around the beautiful scenery of the PNW. I do think it overstayed its welcome; I thought things were wrapping up then I crossed into the new area to the south. But overall I have great memories of it and it's still top dog for me as far as sheer horde numbers and intensity.

[deleted]

The open-world was a joy to explore. Well, maybe not a joy considering how tense things can get. The story was a bore. Seriously though, the motorcycle and the gas mechanic that forced you to confront the environment and all of its hazards was brilliant. I got it as a PS+ freebie, but I’d buy the sequel.

Murky-Expression2721

you're not alone! I bought this game when it was on sale a little while ago and I agree. It's the best game I've ever played. I can't wait to finish it so I can replay it :D

thepaperrhino

A little late to the party, but I played it on PC, finally got a PS5, and bought it again there. I absolutely love GoW, but this game definitely rivals it.

East_Moose_683

I cannot even describe how far above every other game I put days gone. I love assassins creed and God of war but this is on another level. To hear they won't be making a sequel just blows my mind. What a huge disservice to the genre/industry. It's such a damn shame! My God do/did I love this game!

Yourahoot

I love it. One of my favorites for so many reasons.

Educational_Rub4095

Days gone is hands down no doubt in my mind the best game I have ever played. It doesn’t get enough credit for being the masterpiece that it is. The game is a fucking masterpiece

bunnyhat3

Please for the love of god play more video games if you think Days Gone is a ‘fucking masterpiece’.

TheWarlockGamma

Please for the love of god get it through your thick skull that opinions exist. It’s fine if you don’t like the game but other people do.

Otherwise-Rip1225

days gone is a game hidden under crap because of meta crictics and other saying its mid

TheSecretNaame

Nah is the worst game I ever played. The gameplay is just feel empty in the open world, the story is so poor that even is a cliche most of it and it was taken directly from 2006 game Bully

stockdeity

I keep on reinstalling based on the hype and never manage more than an hour. The people recommending must have such different taste and or a really low standard.

actualseventwelven

I just finished my first 100% on my second play. I googled “Days Gone is” the best game ever came up and here I am. I love that you mentioned the initial struggle, it was my favorite part of the game lol. Cheers mate

East_Moose_683

100% greatest game ever made..... Ever. I'm so sad it's not a continued story. Could have gone so far with it. Different characters, different locations. Honestly kills me that this is a huge missed opportunity. I don't know if they didn't market it properly or if people just didn't give it a chance but truly is sad they aren't continuing. What a game!!!

No_Lengthiness7320

best game ever... hords.. doing jobs and nice story .. inside.. i was played till atari commodore.. this game is the best.. last of us also good.. but open world in this game doing job///// spent a lot of time on this game.. WHY WE DONT HAVE SECOND PART!!

Turbulent_Row5422

I've been gaming since the 80's, and I must say that I've never been so intrigued since the first time I've played Super Mario Bro's and Gyromite when the NES made its debut. Things might sometimes seem repetitive with gathering items and killing hoards. But think about it, if this was a real life scenario, people would be doing exactly that in order to survive. With me being a 7 year US Army vet with a few deployments on my chest, the killer & survival instinct kicks in. Managing, compensating, risking, battle planning, and knowing & using the terrains for the advantage. The story line is also pretty interesting. Deacon reminds me of Jax Teller from Son's of Anarchy. Disciplined and sticking to the code kinda guy. I find the weaponry is just fine. In dire times as such when the game is taking place, good weapons would be hard to come by, let alone munitions. The absolute only thing that bothered me was that you couldn't collect and hoard supplies, munitions, and the enemies weapons to either sell or just stash. Because in reality, apocalypse or not, no one would leave weapons and supplies laying around. I haven't yet finished the game, just started the second phase on the other side of the mountain. I haven't and I won't look at spoilers on YouTube or anywhere else in order for me to keep that element of surprise sort of speak and the unknown ongoing. Great job to the Devs, 4 thumbs up from me.
