Everyone just wants a new Stronghold that’s good. Somehow, a post-apocalyptic zombie game named They Are Billions was the closest one to scratch the same itch.

Bay-12

I’m looking forward to Age of Darkness’ full release. Seems similar to They Are Billions.

Talanock

Banished was a big hit that got the genre popular again IMO.

chirdman

Yes, somehow Banished hooked me more than all the others. Manor Lords looks to have a similar aesthetic but I've not had time to play it.

jcfac

> Banished was a big hit Yeah, but it didn't have that blocky graphics style. But maybe it still inspired those others.

JerbearCuddles

Fun time period, fun gameplay. Medieval/fantasy settings are awesome for gameplay.

Majesty was the GOAT

minotaur-cream

Cause they're fun as hell and we need more. The first RTS games I played were Command and Conquer, and Warcraft

itsmehutters

I think that the market was lacking a bit, there are way more modern/sci-fi city builders. The most popular picks usually were Tropico or Anno series. And both games are very different to me, and there was nothing in between. Tropico is more political and Anno is more into automation.

Rey4jonny

Settlers?

Dubious_Titan

Banished. That's what you're looking for.

gearabuser

Who else is just waiting for a new total war medieval entry?  Also, becastled is pretty decent I think if you like a simplified stronghold

Influence_X

The question you ask is kinda fuzzy because you're kinda referencing colony sim games in general, but there's also tower defense games that fall under what you describe. Long story short, probably Banished.

jcfac

> The question you ask is kinda fuzzy It is a bit fuzzy. Sounds like Banished is the answer, but these games I'm referring to have more blocky/voxel art styles.

Bamdoozler

Command and conquer, Starcraft and age of empires. You could definitely go back further but these are the main 3 I think about that laid the foundation for all rts games that followed

>Why are there so many midevel city building / light-RTS games out these days? Medieval. I mean its a video game genre like any other genre. What is wrong if we are gonna get couple of more of those over the past years? There is no such thing as too many games. If you don't like medieval times you can always pick other one like space or present or something less realistic. We are spoiled for choice and that is a good thing. Not a bad thing. >What was the first game that started this movement. That probably would be one of medieval RTS games in 90s. >"Kingdoms and Castles" & "Diplomacy is not an Option" are two examples. Kingdoms and Castles it is a game from 2017. Diplomacy is Not an Option is a game from 2022. I don't think twose two games counts as "recent".

ziplock9000

You mention 2.. lol.
