my morning jacket are the single most underrated artist ever imo. everyone who listens to them knows how good they are but simply not enough people have ever heard of them at all.
I got into MMJ within the last couple years and the more of them I hear (especially their live stuff) the more they continue to blow me away. The range and talent of those guys is astounding.
couldn’t agree more. Z is a masterpiece all the way through and the rest of their albums are only a grain of sand away from being just as good. incredibly talented group
yes you should. my recommendation would be to start with Z and it still moves (probably the two best records for getting into them, with the former being there best). their sound has changed quite drastically over time, but in a really palatable/good sorta way - being those two records you might be able to here some of that, as well as just how good of a singer jim james really is. give some of the hits a try first though - especially one big holiday (it’s probably the best indication of how quality their reverb-soaked sound can be).
I hear you! Absolute big on both these artists! I’m booked for the Sydney show - can’t wait to watch Vedder live.
Fingers crossed on seeing Tool late this year or early next. Hope they come down under.
It's not a popular opinion on this sub, but i cut my teeth in the electronic underground music scene same time as the grunge explosion in the 90s
I just saw Jeff Mills recently down in San Diego. Absolutely stunning set. He's the godfather of Detroit techno.
Last year I saw Pearl Jam in Chicago right after a huge house & Techno event (ARC music festival) and there were a lot of excellent DJs on the lineup, including Fatboy Slim.

My favorite band is Umphreys’s McGee, a progressive rock jam band from South Bend/Chicago. Seen them a hundred and twenty something times.
Also love Phish, my morning jacket, Tool, Pink Floyd, Ween, Frank Zappa, Grateful Dead, Zeppelin, Dopapod, and dozen other smaller jam bands no one’s ever head of or cares about.
It’s an especially great when UM adds a little PJ flair to the occasional jam! They’re in my top 5 so was pleasantly Surprised to see someone else here.
I had the benefit of learning all the Zeppelin, Floyd, Beatles ect as a young kid. I grew up with hair bands in the 80s. Was a teen in the 90s for the grunge (and rap) phase. I feel very blessed to have had access to so much awesome music in my lifetime. I'm 43 now, so sure I'll pop on Abbey Road on occasion but my main go to is PJ and My Chemical Romance.
I like most grunge Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Temple of the Dog, TAD, Screaming Trees, etc, but outside of grunge....
- KMFDM
- Dolly Parton (I'd give up my toes to hear an Eddie/Dolly collaboration)
- Chemical Brothers
- Rammstein

Rancid has been heavy on my playlist lately. We’re going to see Green Day in Sept and Rancid is opening for them. I had the And Out Come the Wolves album back in the day and loved it, but hadn’t listened to them for a long time. Started listening to that one again and some of their other stuff and realized I really fucking like Rancid.
Seems like this is every post in r/alternativerock but I'm happy to discover different bands.

for anyone looking for something a little bit different & because i don’t want to reiterate a lot of great bands others have already posted, i’ve actually been getting somewhat deep into japanese rock/alt-rock, I definitely recommend checking out people like :
-Band Maid (saw them live in 2022, they’re guitar work is stunning)
-Kinokoteikoku
-Mass of the Fermenting Dregs
-Uchu Nekoko (slower and more “shoegaze” but really neat guitar tones and riffs
- SiM has a lot of harder tracks too and are really good if you’re tryna check out some new stuff!
there are a handful of others i listen to regularly that i am too lazy to put here because i don’t have a japanese keyboard but feel free to pm me if you’re interested :)
Oasis. Noel’s solo work is great too.
While PJ were kinda reluctant rockstars (which I loved), Oasis was the complete opposite and I loved their cockiness.
Also their influence, the Stone Roses
I like a wide variety of music, from classical to jazz to blues to folk, etc…Some examples of favourites:
* Eric Johnson
* The Decemberists
* Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
* Andy Timmons
* Paul Gilbert
* Neutral Milk Hotel
* Wilco
* BB King
* Freddie King
* Julian Lage
* Black Crowes
* The Beatles
* Ani DiFranco
* John Prine
* Rush
* Big Wreck
I grew up on Pearl Jam (13 when Ten came out) and all my music taste since and relies on the lyrics resonating with me.
As 45f and with teen daughters in the house to help influence, I listen to -
Matchbox 20
Conan Gray
Alanis Morissette
Olivia Rodrigo
U2
Hozier
Live
Bleachers
Smashing Pumpkins
Taylor Swift
I feel like I have a pretty diverse taste in music that would probably best be described as 20th Century Rock, Blues, and County.
My Top 10 Listened to Artists all-time on Spotify are (Neil Young isn't on Spotify and makes a significant portion of what I listen to on Apple Music, so I think he is easily in my top 10 most listened to artists):

(3) Steely Dan
(4) Depeche Mode
(5) The Beatles
(6) Allman Brothers Band
(7) Bad Religion

My all time favorites: Beatles, beastie boys and pearl jam.
But, I listen to a lot of types of music. A Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang, Rage Against the Machine, Luscious Jackson, Run DMC, De la Soul, Foo Fighters, U2, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, NIN, Duran Duran, Grateful Dead, David Bowie, NWA, Cream, TRex, Tori Amos, Oasis, Radiohead, Bob Marley, public enemy, CSNY, The Band, The Clash
Deftones, Ministry and Butthole Surfers. Lots of close 2nds but not like I like Pearl Jam. I doubt I would fly across the country to see Ministry just because I looked at the schedule. oticed they were off for a week before, noticed it was "record store day" and they would be playing in a relatively small venue. GreenVille was such a good show.

Pusha T
Vince Staples (which, btw, his Netflix show is amazing)

Interesting. I don't listen to any of those and haven't heard of most of them.
Also, most of my music library isn't grunge. I like a majority of *Pearl Jam*'s discography, but outside that I like about 3 Nirvana songs and that's about it.
* *Ghost*
* *Deer Tick*
* *Royal Blood*
* *The Menzingers*
* *Kvelertak*
* *Mastodon*
* *The Black Keys*
* *Queens of the Stones Age*
* *Baroness*
* *Brian Fallon* \+ *The Gaslight Anthem*
* *Måneskin*
* *Portugal. The Man* (though their recent stuff has been declining in quality a lot)
* *The Beatles*
* *Bruce Springsteen*
* *The Sword*
* *Clutch*
I also listen to a lot of older artists to a lesser degree where I think their libraries are very hit or miss with super high highs and low lows.
* *Fleetwood Mac*
* *Metallica*
* *Eagles*
* *The Rolling Stones*
* *Kiss*
* *AC/DC*
* *Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers*
* *The Traveling Wilburys*

I like this one. I agree with a lot
Twitch is a hidden gem for discovering music
I found Fantastic Plastics. They basically play an entire set every friday on Twitch. I actually went to see them at a live show. I hadn't been to one outside Pearl Jam in 2013 iirc
Roxy Gunn Project is a good one, but they don't play as consistently
He's not new, but I discovered gary newman last night. i think (from what I've heard so far) , he's pretty good
I've also been listening to a lot of new wave and Jungle on there.
Just to add in some bands that I’ve not seen on any lists here

This is WAY too broad for me. My Spotify is loaded with playlists that I’ve built…as I like to say, “everything from Sinatra to Slayer and Manilow to Metallica.”
I’d say my top 5 bands are PJ, the Ramones, Rush, REM and Metallica. Honorable mention to AIC, Counting Crows, Jason Isbell, Jack White and Iron Maiden.
(Seriously…I am ALL over the place here.)
Rush, My Morning Jacket, Dawes, Jason Isbell, Warren Zevon, IDLES, John Craigie, Avett Brothers, Blackberry Smoke, Yes, Genesis, Lord Huron, They Might Be Giants, Drive-By Truckers

Thanks. My obsession with PJ is only rivaled by my obsession with Tool. I’ve been a huge fan of both since the early 90s.

for anyone looking for something a little bit different & because i don’t want to reiterate a lot of great bands others have already posted, i’ve actually been getting somewhat deep into japanese rock/alt-rock, I definitely recommend checking out people like : -Band Maid (saw them live in 2022, they’re guitar work is stunning) -Kinokoteikoku -Mass of the Fermenting Dregs -Uchu Nekoko (slower and more “shoegaze” but really neat guitar tones and riffs - SiM has a lot of harder tracks too and are really good if you’re tryna check out some new stuff! there are a handful of others i listen to regularly that i am too lazy to put here because i don’t have a japanese keyboard but feel free to pm me if you’re interested :)
Japanese bands I listened to: OOIOO, Boredoms, Nisenmenmondai
checked these out overnight, some great tunes many thanks for the recommendations :))

Bad Religion, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, the Hold Steady, NoFX, Green Day, Gn’R

The Killers. Great live band.
Oasis. Noel’s solo work is great too. While PJ were kinda reluctant rockstars (which I loved), Oasis was the complete opposite and I loved their cockiness. Also their influence, the Stone Roses
Stone Roses!!! I like all Madchester scene and Factory records bands.
Billy
I like a wide variety of music, from classical to jazz to blues to folk, etc…Some examples of favourites: * Eric Johnson * The Decemberists * Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers * Andy Timmons * Paul Gilbert * Neutral Milk Hotel * Wilco * BB King * Freddie King * Julian Lage * Black Crowes * The Beatles * Ani DiFranco * John Prine * Rush * Big Wreck
My Morning Jacket is one of the next logical steps from PJ
I grew up on Pearl Jam (13 when Ten came out) and all my music taste since and relies on the lyrics resonating with me. As 45f and with teen daughters in the house to help influence, I listen to - Matchbox 20 Conan Gray Alanis Morissette Olivia Rodrigo U2 Hozier Live Bleachers Smashing Pumpkins Taylor Swift
I feel like I have a pretty diverse taste in music that would probably best be described as 20th Century Rock, Blues, and County. My Top 10 Listened to Artists all-time on Spotify are (Neil Young isn't on Spotify and makes a significant portion of what I listen to on Apple Music, so I think he is easily in my top 10 most listened to artists): (1) Pearl Jam (2) The Smiths (3) Steely Dan (4) Depeche Mode (5) The Beatles (6) Allman Brothers Band (7) Bad Religion (8) Grateful Dead (9) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (10) George Jones

Butthole Surfers are fun band
Variety is the spice of life. I listen to EVERYTHING and keep an open mind. Tori Amos playing at the moment.
Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd, Arcade Fire, Metallica, Mumford & Sons, Deep Purple,

Definitely in the minority here, but outside of grunge, I listen to mostly rap. Specifically: J. Cole Kendrick Lamar Mos Def (Yasiin Bey) Pusha T Vince Staples (which, btw, his Netflix show is amazing) Kid Cudi Tyler, the Creator Migos I just haven’t loved any newer rock bands. So it’s pretty much either 60s-70s rock, grunge or rap for me lol
Wu-Tang NIN Tool Bob Dylan Marilyn Manson Sabbath The Stooges New York Dolls Misfits Rage Whiskey Myers Deftones Zeal & Ardor Thunderpussy TV On The Radio A Tribe Called Quest The Talking Heads Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Ministry The Ramones Duke Ellington QOTSA Ottis Redding Sturgill Simpson Danzig Cradle of Filth John Lee Hooker Rolling Stones Radiohead Smashing Pumpkins Robert Johnson Stone Temple Pilots Those are probably my top bands not named AIC, PJ, Soundgarden, etc.

Everything. Almost literally. New, old. Across all genres. (Except Opera and radio country.)
Nickleback’s good and you can fuck off if you try to tell me otherwise.
Interesting. I don't listen to any of those and haven't heard of most of them. Also, most of my music library isn't grunge. I like a majority of *Pearl Jam*'s discography, but outside that I like about 3 Nirvana songs and that's about it. * *Ghost* * *Deer Tick* * *Royal Blood* * *The Menzingers* * *Kvelertak* * *Mastodon* * *The Black Keys* * *Queens of the Stones Age* * *Baroness* * *Brian Fallon* \+ *The Gaslight Anthem* * *Måneskin* * *Portugal. The Man* (though their recent stuff has been declining in quality a lot) * *The Beatles* * *Bruce Springsteen* * *The Sword* * *Clutch* I also listen to a lot of older artists to a lesser degree where I think their libraries are very hit or miss with super high highs and low lows. * *Fleetwood Mac* * *Metallica* * *Eagles* * *The Rolling Stones* * *Kiss* * *AC/DC* * *Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers* * *The Traveling Wilburys* * *Creedence Clearwater Revival*
My favorite bands outside of grunge are: MMJ, Radiohead, Goose, Tame Impala, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Thievery Corp, The Grateful Dead, The Black Keys from Akron Ohio
I like this one. I agree with a lot Twitch is a hidden gem for discovering music I found Fantastic Plastics. They basically play an entire set every friday on Twitch. I actually went to see them at a live show. I hadn't been to one outside Pearl Jam in 2013 iirc Roxy Gunn Project is a good one, but they don't play as consistently He's not new, but I discovered gary newman last night. i think (from what I've heard so far) , he's pretty good I've also been listening to a lot of new wave and Jungle on there.
Just to add in some bands that I’ve not seen on any lists here Boards of Canada Aphex Twin Broadcast Life without Buildings John Coltrane Nina Simone Joy Division New order Cluster Harmonia Neu!

I saw them once also. Great wall of sound smashing my body.
Really good lists. Mine toggle with whomever I’ve seen live most recently too: Foo fighters Green Day Tom Petty Dead and Co (John Mayer has grown on me Tremendously) Mt. Joy Gary Clark Jr. Black Pumas Nathaniel (with the Night Sweats)
This is WAY too broad for me. My Spotify is loaded with playlists that I’ve built…as I like to say, “everything from Sinatra to Slayer and Manilow to Metallica.” I’d say my top 5 bands are PJ, the Ramones, Rush, REM and Metallica. Honorable mention to AIC, Counting Crows, Jason Isbell, Jack White and Iron Maiden. (Seriously…I am ALL over the place here.)
That's the best way.
Too many to name, but personally the 60s and 70s rock era is more of my scene, especially The Beatles, Cream, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and The Who
British invasion!!!
