Leave the 15 hours / week job and find a new one

Cortwade1

That’s easier said than done. I’m in a rural college town, 10$/hr is practically the best I can do without a degree.

HauntedCS

What state? $10/hr seems insanely low. I’m in a rural college town and minimum around here is $15 with $18 being the norm.

Cortwade1

Louisiana. Seems both the minimum and average is about 10 here. Our Panda Express starts at 16 but they’re not hiring.

HauntedCS

Damn, I’m on west coast so I shouldn’t talk much about the situation there. But relatabley, fast food here are the ones giving the $18+ wages, some how.

VanDenIzzle

$10/hr is insanely low but is not unusual for most southern states. Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Georgia, Whyoming and Tennessee all are at the federal minimum of 7.25. go look at Indeed and search for entry level in these states. Hell there's retail stores offering $12/hr for shift supervisors around me.

GeorgeRetire

Then find a $10/hr job that offers more hours.

Donate plasma if you're healthy and there is a plasma center nearby. Can be a few hundred a month to sit on your phone for an hour twice a week.

Cortwade1

We do have a plasma donation center. Ngl I’m not the fittest guy, I had sorta written it off. I’ll look into it though

hobopwnzor

They aren't picky. As long as you aren't anemic or really underweight you'll qualify

catgatuso

They probably won’t care if you’re fit—when I was donating in my 20s the compensation was higher if your weight was higher.

BRLA7

In Louisiana you can make @ $120 a week when donating twice a week (usually @1 hour each time in my experience) assuming your iron is good and you stay hydrated they won’t turn you away. Getting registered does take longer, so your first visit might be like 3 hours, but it’s much faster after that.

glitterbeardwizard

Dog walking, mowing lawns, cleaning houses, farm chores. Apprenticing in a trade can be a good back up for times like this.

RumbleStripRescue

Tutor. I made a lot of cash giving lessons and tutoring in college and 100% set my own schedule.

Cortwade1

Gotcha. I’ll look into it. I’m a big history buff so maybe I can do something with that

RumbleStripRescue

I got a lot of work by teaching middle school/high school students in my college town. Put up some fliers / advertise around. It's pretty easy work. Good luck!

Not sure if catering and banquet work is available in your area, but the food alone would save you hundreds of dollars. I'm an old established dude and I still bartend for them sometimes because the money is so good. 20 years ago, this type of job was a life saver for me.

Cortwade1

Unfortunately our school food service does do catering but it would be at state minimum wage and hourly. I’ll see if we have other catering companies in the area though. As for bartending, idk if anyone would have me because I’m under 21

clever_reddit_name69

Look at private catering services. They always need people for events, especially during wedding season. It's relatively easy work, the pay is alright, and sometimes there are cash tips. If you are reliable, you'll get good shifts. More than 1/2 of US states allow 18+ bartenders, but those are coveted positions in catering, so it's more likely you'd be serving & bussing.

triggerhappy5

Bartending. Little to no experience required and wherever there are people, there are bars.

nmarf16

Look into college tutor sites or tutoring sites. If you have a specialty, you can make some good money on and off throughout the week. Most sites let you set times you can take, so you don’t have to worry about a request being at like noon or something if you don’t want that

Own_Dinner8039

You could try and do some content writing on fiverr. Or get a certificate in something that you can freelance in like web programming.

aji2019

I totally get being in a rural area that has limited options. Do you think you could successfully sell things online? You could thrift & yardsale to source inventory. If I were starting it, I would try to find a specific market that you can pretty easily from where you are, find inventory. It could be glassware, electronics, records, clothing, shoes, collectibles, whatever. After that, my university had a tutoring program that paid minimum wage. If you passed the class with a B+ or higher you could sign up to tutor that class. It wasn’t great or consistent income but it was something I could do in between classes. If there was no one to tutor a class & you were taking it, the professor could recommend you as tutor. You could potentially look into tutoring kids in elementary, middle, & high school. With summer getting ready to start, kids in summer school or ones who were struggling but managed pass will be looking for extra help over the summer. I realize this will be a limited opportunity thing in a rural area but that could very well mean less competition for the job.

yomonkey9

Any good lifeguarding jobs available? Also building up to swim lessons can be a decent chunk of change with summer approaching
