I’ll do it for a 12 pack and a blunt. We just had the me replace in our main bathroom and it was pretty straight forward. Hardest part was figuring out what to do with the old one.
when we replaced ours this winter, i listed the old ones for free on FB marketplace. i had like 20 interested people message me and they were picked up within a few hours. 🤣
Clever, we kept ours in the backyard for a few weeks until bull trash pickup came around. Didn’t think anyone would want the used one- it was green and I think it’s been in the house since the 1960s.
I heard Phoenix is changing the bulk trash pickup routine this fall; I think they're discontinuing quarterly pickups by neighborhood but will pick them up by appointment (not sure if that's quarterly or how frequent).
My neighborhood in Mesa drops those huge bins off on our streets and leaves them for 1 week. They pile up pretty much on the first day so you gotta be ready and quick with your junk. They drop the bins off twice a year. No word on them stopping that yet.
According to the Phoenix web page you can have four appointments in one month. In case you doing something like cleaning out a house or remodeling. It will be by appointment only.
I had one replaced by Home Depot awhile back Toilet, haul away and install was $315 out the door. The price went up when the flange did it's best impression of the "snap" at the end of Avengers Infinity War (seriously, it turned to dust in the installer's hands) but still...nowhere near $1200.
Yes oh my lord! Yes!
Edit: first time I replaced a toilet.... I thought that wax ring was a build up of caca... and was MORTIFIED. Scraped it all away and learned a lesson later that day.
What the hell kind of toilet are you replacing? I don't consider myself a handy person by any stretch of the imagination but I've replaced several standard ones and it's pretty simple.
Just as I said unless there has been a leak damaging the floor over time or say an old iron drain rusted out way into the floor or worse foundation slab most are straight forward. Have had leveling issues occasionally but nothing hard or impossible. Then any ick factor.
It’s not always this way, but sometimes contractors are busy and they will price their jobs much higher than normal, because it’s a win/win for them. Either you decline their offer, which is fine because they were busy, or you accept their offer and their profit margin is crazy high, giving them the incentive to do this job even though they’re tired.
This is why you always get multiple quotes, sometimes you just gotta play the numbers game
People love to complain about high prices, and then finding a cheaper price on something. That was this contractor’s intent all along, to not get the job and hope the customer takes the hint
And there are a ton of helpful video tutorials on youtube! i just searched “kohler toilet install tutorial” or something like that and it was pretty easy.
Toilet install instructions are also going to be universal, excepting any bidet attachments etc. Just remember to get a new wax ring and turn the water off and you’re good to go.
You should have done it yourself. Head over to r/diy for tips next time. We just installed 4 toilets ourselves. It’s really not complicated. Only 2 screws.
I paid a handy man $200 to install a toilet I bought at Home Depot, but I feel yah, I had a plumber quote $1800 and when I said how can you charge $1800 for 30 minutes of work he said that’s the market rate.
I installed a toilet a few weeks ago. The toilet was $100 and the no-slam seat was about $40. It took about an hour. Do you have a material /labor breakdown?
Did the contractor/handyman come to your house to quote the job? Other than needing major plumbing or subfloor work (if you have a wooden subfloor), that's outrageous 😳
$1200 is absolutely insane. Toilet: ~$300. Wax ring: under $20. Maybe a new water line: $10. Maybe a seat of the toilet didn’t include one: $30-40. Two nuts, lift off old toilet, clean off old wax ring, set in new ring, carefully set newtoilet on vertically, two nuts, done. Plus water line of course. Maybe a 30 minute job plus getting rid of the old toilet.
Do it yourself. If not, hire a handyman, watch and learn. Most (not all) don’t mind you observing and asking questions. Between that and YouTube you will have that topic covered for life.
I could see it if you want to install a wall mounted toilet and need additional plumbing installed or if you want a luxury brand like Toto. Some of their toilets cost more than that just for the product. If it's just a regular toilet install that seems expensive.
Just had one replaced - my handyman did the install and haul away for $100.
I paid for the toilet.
The price you were given is the "I don't want to do that" price.

They did a bunch of work in my house, including installing a toilet and wax ring. I had purchased the toilet at Home Depot and they installed it for $199. This was in 2020. They did good work at fair prices I thought and the plumber was neat and respectful of our home. This was in Chandler, not sure what their service area is.
I'd stay away from Hays Cooling, Heating, and Plumbing.
OP appears to have disappeared, but I would guess that the $1,200 is Parker and Sons supplying the toilet, toilet tank guts that probably has poo and pee buttons, materials, labor and haul away
Did they come out and inspect it in person? The only thing I can think of to justify that is if there is rot around the toilet, or if the flange that it connects to is severely corroded to where it needs to be replaced, because both of those situations are a mother fucker... But if it's a straightforward toilet swap, I would make a mental note to never call them again
Yeah, I think it’s the scenario a lot of others mentioned. They didn’t want the job unless it was worth while. The guy was over 4 hours late and it was 5:30 when he arrived.
This was in early 2021, but I bought a toilet from Home Depot and then hired someone from task rabbit to replace it. It was super easy and his fee was maybe $50 to come over and install.
Way more info needed.
A straight toilet replacement isn't that expensive but if you need drain repairs or it's a wall mount then sure, that makes sense.
I had someone come give me an estimate to replace my toilet. It was about that much. They tried selling me a toilet with all the bells and whistles. Ended up just installing it myself with a basic, generic toilet and saved myself about $1000.
My mom paid almost 10k for 3 new toilets but they had to cut the floor with a saw for many hours to make it fit. I still think she got ripped off. $1200 sounds like a steal!
You're doing it wrong. You send them a list of what they need, and the prices to receive and install them. I have a premonition the list will be long and expensive.
To fit the toilets. The old ones were 40 years old. They had to saw carpet and tile under the carpet. It took at least 12 hours. I know she was overcharged but rich old widows are targets.
Unless it was concrete slab or they had to add wood cross members to support stuff.
Last time I hear a quote that high was to repair an under slab blockage in a sewer drain.
I just got 2 quotes for $320 and $400. I had already bought a toilet from Home Depot for $170. But the old toilet started working again so we didn't get it installed. I think $1,200 is way overpriced.

Dude, a vintage mcm green toilet?? You could have sold that for like $500-$1000!
Damn it.
Yeah, that's shitty... All that money flushed down the drain.

I love this in theory, but I feel like it’s going to go terribly. They struggled doing the bulk on time when it was scheduled.
Appointment only which is stupid
I just replaced two in my house. Bought them from Lowes and installed them myself but they did offer installation for $270.00 each.
I had one replaced by Home Depot awhile back Toilet, haul away and install was $315 out the door. The price went up when the flange did it's best impression of the "snap" at the end of Avengers Infinity War (seriously, it turned to dust in the installer's hands) but still...nowhere near $1200.
This is the way
Unless massive plumbing repairs at same time or an expensive new bidet way over priced. Except for any ick factor most are straight forward.
Is it a gold toilet?
Its not a cheap ass contractor toilet from a big box store.
I've installed ~40 toilets from "big box stores" and can assure everyone that they are fine and will last longer than you will own your house.
It's just a seat. The only time I would pay extra for a toilet is if it was a fancy bidet with a heated seat.
Don't forget the wax ring if you do it yourself!
Found out the hard way did you?
Yes oh my lord! Yes! Edit: first time I replaced a toilet.... I thought that wax ring was a build up of caca... and was MORTIFIED. Scraped it all away and learned a lesson later that day.

100% this when you get a crazy high bid. They know it's high
People love to complain about high prices, and then finding a cheaper price on something. That was this contractor’s intent all along, to not get the job and hope the customer takes the hint
Problem is people will just come away from it with bad taste and bad mouth contractor. Just say you are busy
If you are physically able to lift a toilet (~100 lbs) then you are able to install a toilet yourself
That was their “I don’t want to do it/ I’m busy” price.
Might also be the "Let's see how much this dummy will actually pay" price.
Haha it’s very possible.
Yeah, I think that’s the case really. The guy was 4 hours late and arrived at 5:30.
You should have done it yourself. Head over to r/diy for tips next time. We just installed 4 toilets ourselves. It’s really not complicated. Only 2 screws.
My mom just had new installed with bidet in Phoenix. $500 included toilet and labor.
I paid a handy man $200 to install a toilet I bought at Home Depot, but I feel yah, I had a plumber quote $1800 and when I said how can you charge $1800 for 30 minutes of work he said that’s the market rate.
Somers plumbers quoted me $175 If we supplied the toilet. I did not ask what the price was for them supplying it.
That's how I handled my replacements.
Sounds like you called Parker and Sons. They are Wall Street owned thieves.
Parker and Sons have taken thievery to a whole new level.
Haha not this time but yeah P&S is really expensive
Is it a Japanese toilet?
Licensed plumber going to be a big bill, a handy man can do it for $150. Assuming the valve isn’t ancient it’s such a easy job.
Yes and no. But there are some that will totally gouge. Think the HVAC pluming electrical that advertise everywhere.
I installed a toilet a few weeks ago. The toilet was $100 and the no-slam seat was about $40. It took about an hour. Do you have a material /labor breakdown?
Whoever gave you at quote just didn’t want the job.
Watch YouTube and replace it yourself. It's crazy easy
No shot. Whatever the cost of the toilet +300 max. It's an hour job at most.
Criminally over priced.
I’m in the wrong industry.
Did the contractor/handyman come to your house to quote the job? Other than needing major plumbing or subfloor work (if you have a wooden subfloor), that's outrageous 😳

lol if they manage to get the 1200 out of ya, congrats on them for their win.
Do it yourself. If not, hire a handyman, watch and learn. Most (not all) don’t mind you observing and asking questions. Between that and YouTube you will have that topic covered for life.

Depends on the job. Post the quote to see what is included. Toilets range from under 200 to well over 1000.
Did they come out and inspect it in person? "that's gonna cost ya" -joe the plumber

That’s a great price!
Parker and Sons?
Unfortunately not but yeah they are usually up there as well
Seems a bit steep
Way more info needed. A straight toilet replacement isn't that expensive but if you need drain repairs or it's a wall mount then sure, that makes sense.
Understandable. Straight toilet replacement. No mention of replacing anything else in the area. Not even the supply line. Said it was still good
For a standard toilet I'd expect to pay around $500 all in. Call Accent Plumbing.
Awesome! Thank you
I had someone come give me an estimate to replace my toilet. It was about that much. They tried selling me a toilet with all the bells and whistles. Ended up just installing it myself with a basic, generic toilet and saved myself about $1000.
They are super easy. YouTube it
Toilet replacement is insanely easy. Watch a 5 minute video and anyone can do it.
That is crazy to pay that. Buy the toilet, and pay a handyman. I paid a handyman man $150.
My mom paid almost 10k for 3 new toilets but they had to cut the floor with a saw for many hours to make it fit. I still think she got ripped off. $1200 sounds like a steal!
I have many things to sell you and your mom. What are you needing??
I tried to stop her and offered to call a different plumber.
You're doing it wrong. You send them a list of what they need, and the prices to receive and install them. I have a premonition the list will be long and expensive.
That raises so many questions about the installation. Cut the floor to install the toilets or cut the floor to replace the sewer drains?
To fit the toilets. The old ones were 40 years old. They had to saw carpet and tile under the carpet. It took at least 12 hours. I know she was overcharged but rich old widows are targets.

That’s wild but understandable in that situation maybe

I'll do it for you for 275 😅
I'll let you know when I need it installed
Ask on Nextdoor
Like everyone else is saying its pretty easy to diy
Criminal. I say post who quoted you this. They didn't think you meant brand new installation right?
Sooooo buy the toilet you want from home Depot and pay a Mexican 150 bucks to install it
