The funny part about this is any decent auto engineer knows that unbreakable windows can become a safety hazard and add a lot of expense/base weight to a vehicle.
Anybody who has ever driven in an MRAP in Iraq or Afghanistan also knows that ballistic windows get shattered all the time by rocks thrown at whatever velocity a malnourished child can throw it.
And those windows have no limitations put on them for aesthetics.
That's nothing compared to the front bumper. That truck would cut someone in half on an impact.
Plus there's other issues like the lack of windshield wipers. It's a prototype so the final version would have them, but they'll look awkward protruding out without a radical redsesign of the vehicle's shape. Worse the vehicle is based on a rigid shell. Which isn't how modern vehicles work because they're designed to crumple under pressure. This stopping the occupants over a longer distance with reduced g-forces. But a rigid carapace shell? That means the seatbelt cuts in deeper causing greater trauma. Maybe they can engineer it to sheer under stress with etched weakspots, but basically the entire vehicles design presents novel issues.
What I don't get is, it looks fucking awful as the prototype, like it's the ugliest looking truck in the history of god damned trucks. Just because it's different doesn't mean it looks good. so many fanboys were willing to preorder it despite it looking so awful and having zero idea how they'd fix major issues, based on designs that can't work and features you don't want like unbreakable windows.

The truth is that the entire car industry and infrastructure relies completely on utterly insane government subsidy - more than is even really comprehensible.
Imagine another product industry where there are entire government agencies at every level not only building the pathways on which your product (and only your product) is able to be used, law enforcement for that, licensing, public school classes to teach kids how to use your product, giving space for your product (and only your product) to be stored when not in use (on public land often), and even enforcing mandatory extra space for your product at any new construction built.
What other pathways enable such a broad spectrum of industrial and personal use? The big 3 I can think of are electricity, water, and natural gas. All of which the government has legislated easements against private property to provide space for and spends money regulating.

Look at it through another lens: ensuring your nation maintains the knowledge to run an industry like heavy manufacturing. Manufacturing and supply-chain management are skillsets, and you need a lot of people trained up in them if you want to have it available to your nation.
Say China decides to cut its manufacturing output by half. Maybe the government goes nuts, maybe there's a crazy famine, maybe war with another country stops shipping around them, whatever reason. Now you need to find somewhere else to manufacture your stuff... and you're competing with the rest of China's old clients. Having a solid base of the required skillset has benefitted you.
Have a look at what's happening in Russia right now, since they've cut off access to a huge amount of their markets. They can make some stuff themselves, and can get some stuff from China, but they're hurting in other areas as imports have dried up.

This is exactly the reason I was so happy to see Ford’s approach. Right now I have an eco diesel. I use my truck for a number of activities and it is not a street queen. It’s dirty, scratched up and so on.
I want to buy an EV Truck at some point in time here, but I also will need to buy things like a truck cap (topper) for the bed, AT tires, snow chains for said tires side steps, mud flaps and so on. The lightning as an example I think will largely use the same accessories which since there’s millions of F-150s on the road means lots of options and more economical options. Even things like tires if they’re an oddball size can make getting what I need difficult to find. If you do something like pop a tire so bad it can’t be patched and you happen to be half way across the country I want to be able to get one reasonably easily.
I was so afraid that it was going to raise my insurance rates through the roof, cause I'd seen that issue with Teslas and I figured it was just an ev problem, but my insurance went up 177 bucks every 6 months (and that was with adding the truck and keeping my other vehicle on, which only has basic insurance on it since it's so old). That's a huge benefit that I don't think a lot of people realize
Yeah, it's too high to me honestly. I reserved when the lowest model was 40k and I was thankfully price protected by Ford even though I just got it on Saturday (nearly two years after my initial reservation). Trucks in general are just way the fuck too expensive.

Definitely not a detail I noticed first time I saw movie, but definitely something I noticed on one of many vhs re-watches early on. Doc has Marty meet him at “twin pines mall”…for some reason feels compelled to mention that it used to be farmland owned by “old man Peabody, who had a crazy dream about breeding pine trees”…Marty goes back in time, takes out a tree…old man screams, “space bastard, you killed my pine”…mall is now “lone pines mall” when Marty returns. Still find it odd though that what was supposed to a pine tree farm only had 2 pines? If this guy was serious about “breeding pine trees”, you’d think he would have had a lot more… of course, the farm failed and was taken over by a mall regardless, so who knows?
They also managed to turn Jennifer into Elisabeth Shue somehow. That’s, uhh…uhh…that’s chaos…!

I drove my Rivian 10 feet off the road with 1,200 lbs of dirt and 4 people. It sank like the titanic in what I would consider soft but sturdy dirt for my old jeep
Ya they are going to be great for rock climbing or trailer pulling, but soft soil/mud, not so much.

Heavy cars more often get stuck in mud, sand, snow. It's why it's stupid to get a large suv because it has "4 wheel drive and it snows here". Get a light car and winter tires and then you don't even need 4 wheel drive in the snow.
Off road vehicles get stuck in the mud and need another vehicle to get them out all the time. This isn't news.

This is the only evidence that the person has that said they seen them having to pull the cybertruck out. The picture is a screenshot of a video being filmed while driving past them while everyone is standing around other vehicles which all seem to be parked (I thought the jeep in the ~~vehicle~~ video was moving at first but even after rewatching a few times I don’t think it’s moving either - really hard to tell with such a shaky video) I would label this as misinformation for the time being and someone just looking to sling shit at Tesla and/or Elon. Diesel truck being a metaphor for government subsidies
spoiler alert... don't look into oil and gas....
The truth is that the entire car industry and infrastructure relies completely on utterly insane government subsidy - more than is even really comprehensible. Imagine another product industry where there are entire government agencies at every level not only building the pathways on which your product (and only your product) is able to be used, law enforcement for that, licensing, public school classes to teach kids how to use your product, giving space for your product (and only your product) to be stored when not in use (on public land often), and even enforcing mandatory extra space for your product at any new construction built.
What other pathways enable such a broad spectrum of industrial and personal use? The big 3 I can think of are electricity, water, and natural gas. All of which the government has legislated easements against private property to provide space for and spends money regulating.
Internet, but I agree with your premise. Infrastructure investments help specific companies sell & deliver their product sure, BUT! infrastructure is a clear common good which the government ought to maintain for the collective interest.

Look at it through another lens: ensuring your nation maintains the knowledge to run an industry like heavy manufacturing. Manufacturing and supply-chain management are skillsets, and you need a lot of people trained up in them if you want to have it available to your nation. Say China decides to cut its manufacturing output by half. Maybe the government goes nuts, maybe there's a crazy famine, maybe war with another country stops shipping around them, whatever reason. Now you need to find somewhere else to manufacture your stuff... and you're competing with the rest of China's old clients. Having a solid base of the required skillset has benefitted you. Have a look at what's happening in Russia right now, since they've cut off access to a huge amount of their markets. They can make some stuff themselves, and can get some stuff from China, but they're hurting in other areas as imports have dried up.
Hard to believe that when I put down my $100 deposit for a Cybertruck, housing was still reasonable, democracy was more or less stable, Elon was still kinda like Tony Stark, and we were all like “what’s a pandemic?” Meanwhile, my driveway is still Cybertruckless, I don’t even want a Tesla anymore, and my driveway is a pitted, uneven wreck.

My 10-year old says it looks like low polygon mine craft abomination. I don't even understand the design. People buy pick-ups for two reasons. Either because they think they look cool/badass, or for actual utility. I feel like this car hits neither of these marks.

This is exactly the reason I was so happy to see Ford’s approach. Right now I have an eco diesel. I use my truck for a number of activities and it is not a street queen. It’s dirty, scratched up and so on. I want to buy an EV Truck at some point in time here, but I also will need to buy things like a truck cap (topper) for the bed, AT tires, snow chains for said tires side steps, mud flaps and so on. The lightning as an example I think will largely use the same accessories which since there’s millions of F-150s on the road means lots of options and more economical options. Even things like tires if they’re an oddball size can make getting what I need difficult to find. If you do something like pop a tire so bad it can’t be patched and you happen to be half way across the country I want to be able to get one reasonably easily.
I was so afraid that it was going to raise my insurance rates through the roof, cause I'd seen that issue with Teslas and I figured it was just an ev problem, but my insurance went up 177 bucks every 6 months (and that was with adding the truck and keeping my other vehicle on, which only has basic insurance on it since it's so old). That's a huge benefit that I don't think a lot of people realize

Yeah, it's too high to me honestly. I reserved when the lowest model was 40k and I was thankfully price protected by Ford even though I just got it on Saturday (nearly two years after my initial reservation). Trucks in general are just way the fuck too expensive.
I just saw my first Rivian in the wild yesterday! It's a nice-looking vehicle. I'm not much of a car guy, but it looks so much better than Teslas truck.
I love what Rivian is doing, but those headlights are hideous. Every time I see one I can't help but picture it as the 0_0 face.
