JUST A COUPLE OF MONTHS FOR REAL THIS TIME GUYS

[deleted]

Meanwhile- Rivian, F150 lightning Both that don’t look like low-poly versions of a truck from tomb raiders original game debut.

trippingrainbow

Ye but you have to understand. Elon said the cybertruck will float on water with that famously flawless tesla QC. And it has the futuristic "we glued an ipad on the dashboard so we dont have to pay for physical buttons" interior.

CORN___BREAD

It also has bulletproof glass. Just don’t test it. Especially at a huge press conference.

AresStare

That was hilarious.

Hiccup

That was like a real life SNL sketch. Don't think you could make it any better.

Coming out right after full self driving! ~~2014~~ ~~2015~~ ~~2016~~ ~~2017~~ ~~2018~~ ~~2019~~ ~~2020~~ ~~2021~~ ~~2022~~ 2023?

BrahmariusLeManco

Full self driving is still a long way off it would see. Tesla is in legal hot water after it was revealed that all of the self-driving in the ads that they claimed was in fact self-driving being shown, was recently proven to have all been faked.

MaybeTomBombadil

Is this before or after the Tesla essentially sped up and swerved Into the child crash models,

KnownRate3096

See? We were warned that if the machines became sentient, they'd attack humans. So many movies in the 80's and 90's told us this would happen.

Flavahbeast

We had documentary evidence in the form of Maximum Overdrive, still they persisted in this folly

petuniaraisinbottom

I thought they gave up on full self driving and are just going forward with nothing more advanced than what you see in the betas today? The "FSD beta" is so embarassing. And Tesla could have dominated if Elon wasn't such a child throwing a tantrum about demanding that the cars not have lidar and instead use plain old RGB cameras and AI. And you've seen how well that's been working for them.

bigdsm

“But the LIDAR sensor pod is ugly! And humans work just fine with visual spectrum only!” What an absolutely stupid decision with somehow even stupider reasoning. If humans had access to more data, they’d be better drivers. And the “ugly” pod can be “fixed” by simply redesigning the car around it rather than being hellbent on making it look like a car.

high-up-in-the-trees

and humans use waaaay more than visual input from the eyes alone while driving. This is another one of the Elon decisions that would have been made over the objections of engineers who actually know what the fuck they're doing, working backwards to the 'oh so thats why we did it that way' conclusion like he has with so many things

jcorn3

It is laughably far off. I'd say probably a decade. I have a model y that tries to drive itself off the freeway into the median regularly, mistakes signs for speed limits and slams on breaks, randomly slows down for stoplights that don't exist on interstates, tries to blow through red lights after stopping for the same red light, fails to use turn signals, and bounces down a lane like Mario chaining wall jumps. Absolutely the worst $10,000 I have ever spent.

ABCosmos

Meanwhile the lidar based solutions are progressing by leaps and bounds: https://www.engadget.com/cruise-self-driving-taxis-can-now-operate-around-the-clock-in-san-francisco-144419506.html Self driving is here, Tesla just isn't a serious player.

Agreeable-Weather-89

That's just the Roadster 2

CouncilmanRickPrime

Speaking of the Roadster, they've literally stopped talking about that car completely which is ridiculous.

Agreeable-Weather-89

Well I bet they've given all the influencers they promised a roadster 2 to a Model X and cash... Right?

CouncilmanRickPrime

Took pre orders, promised free Roadsters to influencers and then... Crickets.

Agreeable-Weather-89

Well fortunately he delivered on the battery swapping.

redpachyderm

Stop it. At least FSD is out of Beta finally.

Fidget08

Rain sensing wipers work too.

redpachyderm

Mine didn’t work to the point I didn’t have to turn them on manually most of the time. But they kinda worked. I’ve heard other manufacturers have figured this out but if I recall correctly Tesla is using the camera to determine rain and that hasn’t worked so well. There were many things I felt never worked as advertised on our Tesla but fanboys will always defend them. It’s all in permanent Beta apparently…

RODjij

And it's not like the other major manufacturers caught up to them with new hybrids and EVs. Theres other vehicles that look better than the ps1 truck.

Arkhangelzk

Elon broke the “unbreakable” window on stage and I haven’t heard about this truck since lol

cutelyaware

"Oops. Must be a fluke. Try another window. Whoops, it could be a coincidence. Try a third time? Hm, maybe I should have tried this before getting on stage."

Firerrhea

https://youtu.be/LMWwImDX3ks the video for reference

zunyata

Lol what is even the point? So you can burn to death while fire rescue tries to break through the window?

atreidesflame

That's actually a hilarious point I never thought about.

Cerebral-Parsley

Just like in the Las Vegas loop Boring tunnel that you ride a Tesla through. Wtf do you do if one catches fire? You can open the doors if you are in the tunnel.

insane_contin

In theory, it would mean they won't crack from debris on the highway. In actuality, burning to death because the battery exploded when you got in a car accident, and you can't get out.

joec_95123

Or drown if the truck goes into the water and you can't break the window to get out.

alohadave

> In theory, it would mean they won't crack from debris on the highway. Does anything ever hit any window besides the windshield? It probably does happen, but it's one of those things that you don't engineer for because it's so rare.

rcsheets

Someone hit my right rear window with a big rock once before stealing my backpack.

LongBongJohnSilver

If he was throwing any softer it'd be a toss.

RiotPenguin

But then he had to leave the stage because there wasn't enough room for 2 tossers on it...

ecmcn

“We’ll fix it in post” is the same strategy he’s trying with Twitter.

Captain_Mazhar

Ugh we had a new guy try that BS with an update to our payroll system that controls income tax withholding. Once we threatened to send the penalty notices and fines to his desk, he backed off. That stuff has to work first-time forever.

Arcosim

That guy was so fired after the presentation.

CornholeSurprise

He's the designer of the Truck.

BILOXII-BLUE

Yep, Elon doesn't design or make anything. "oh but he's a nerd, he codes!" - nope, he can't do that either. All he does is decide where to throw his family money, often times it ends up hilariously bad like with this idiotic/investor scam truck

moeburn

Which Star Trek show was it that permanently enshrined him as some kind of visionary that's remembered in history books centuries later?

alnarra_1

if fairness to the show, the one praising him was from the mirror universe.

Keeper_of_Fenrir

It has to have been discovery, as that show was such trash.

cukachoo

Star Trek Discovery is known for making bad choices repeatedly. Yeah this tracks.

[deleted]

"Ohmyfuckinggod"

m6_is_me

Such a genuinely funny reaction, but followed up with possibly the worst PR second sentence of "maybe you threw it a little too hard"

erdogranola

also completely self inflicted, nobody expected windows to survive a steel ball being thrown at them, until they said the windows were unbreakable

TheCrazedTank

Thing is it never should have been a "feature", what if you were in a wreck or crashed into water? Car windows break for a reason.

ediaz98

He did try it before he went on the stage, there is a video

electi0neering

I’m pretty sure, those tests were exactly why the demo failed. Looks like it’s only impact proof exactly once.

sandsurfngbomber

IIRC he said in an interview they were only testing the windows previously and they didn't shatter but on stage they dinged the door first which ended up distributing shock on glass a little differently. Either way, no need to advertise strongest glass ever to people that didn't even ask for it, and not have all the kinks worked out. Same for any other product.

hamandjam

> they dinged the door first which ended up distributing shock on glass a little differently Good thing door dings never happen in real life.

AustinYQM

Imagine your expensive glass broke because some kid swung his door too wide when his mom parked too close. Wild.

hamandjam

> when his mom parked too close Not even too close. Plenty of small parking spaces in the world where the car next to you is perfectly on center and there's little room left when you're in a truck.

GreatWhiteElk

The funny part about this is any decent auto engineer knows that unbreakable windows can become a safety hazard and add a lot of expense/base weight to a vehicle.

Hip_Hop_Hippos

Anybody who has ever driven in an MRAP in Iraq or Afghanistan also knows that ballistic windows get shattered all the time by rocks thrown at whatever velocity a malnourished child can throw it. And those windows have no limitations put on them for aesthetics.

hugganao

I didn't even think about how it could be a safety hazard lol This truck really does need a do over lol

Xatsman

That's nothing compared to the front bumper. That truck would cut someone in half on an impact. Plus there's other issues like the lack of windshield wipers. It's a prototype so the final version would have them, but they'll look awkward protruding out without a radical redsesign of the vehicle's shape. Worse the vehicle is based on a rigid shell. Which isn't how modern vehicles work because they're designed to crumple under pressure. This stopping the occupants over a longer distance with reduced g-forces. But a rigid carapace shell? That means the seatbelt cuts in deeper causing greater trauma. Maybe they can engineer it to sheer under stress with etched weakspots, but basically the entire vehicles design presents novel issues.

AustinYQM

Novel, previously solved, issues. We bringing whiplash back baby.

TwoBionicknees

What I don't get is, it looks fucking awful as the prototype, like it's the ugliest looking truck in the history of god damned trucks. Just because it's different doesn't mean it looks good. so many fanboys were willing to preorder it despite it looking so awful and having zero idea how they'd fix major issues, based on designs that can't work and features you don't want like unbreakable windows.

jjayzx

Can't complain or sue the company if you get stuck roasted inside the vehicle while it's on fire.

cjmar41

But totally worth it if you’re a criminal and/or never plan on crashing, end up trapped, and need to be rescued through a window.

Sthurlangue

Tesla latches and handles have enough trouble functioning on dry land. You don't want to be submerged in a car that has doors with electronic latches AND bullet-proof glass.

TheFotty

In a car that drove itself into the lake.

[deleted]

In the event of an emergency, use the intuitive touchpad exit the vehicle.

insane_contin

#WARNING: WATER DETECTED IN VEHICLE. PLEASE ENTER OVERRIDE CODE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE.

TheMacMan

Every time they need a cash infusion (Tesla is cash poor) they open up reservations again for the Cybertruck and the semi. People give them an interest-free loan and they take in millions, with zero indication of when and if those vehicles will ever be released.

They're all still listed on Tesla's website too, but kinda buried lol

padizzledonk

Ugly as fuck, that thing imo

justabill71

The truck doesn't look that great, either.

rjcarr

For real, I'm sure 90% of the engineering doesn't involve the design. They should just redo the whole top component. There are far fewer Elon worshipers now that would just buy whatever he puts out compared to before his turn.

251Cane

No no, they need to leave the ginormous windshield wiper. It is hilarious.

Doggleganger

It looks like a 5 year old tried to draw a car.

slackmaster2k

If it was actually bad ass, I could get on board with the design. But I’m expecting a rather average quality vehicle that looks dumb.

lordderplythethird

> average quality That'd be an improvement for Tesla, given quality control is an unnecessary expense in Elon's eyes lol

CU_09

They absolutely will never make them. At least not to the scale they need to bring it to market. The sole purpose of this dollar store brand warthog was to generate hype, which is the only useful skill that Elon had before he bought Twitter and showed the world that the emperor has no clothes.

Loki_Nightshadow

I never knew I needed "Dollar store warthog" in my life. But I'm going to slip it into some random conversation somewhere.

Tesla is notorious for poorly made products Cosmetic design is subjective, and while the look of their cars is not for me, I can see the appeal. But the shitty quality control is inexcusable. Flybot76

Originally Twin Pines, until Marty ran one of them down and the mall had a new name in the altered 1985. I never noticed that until somebody pointed it out in a video recently.

PaintDrinkingPete

Definitely not a detail I noticed first time I saw movie, but definitely something I noticed on one of many vhs re-watches early on. Doc has Marty meet him at “twin pines mall”…for some reason feels compelled to mention that it used to be farmland owned by “old man Peabody, who had a crazy dream about breeding pine trees”…Marty goes back in time, takes out a tree…old man screams, “space bastard, you killed my pine”…mall is now “lone pines mall” when Marty returns. Still find it odd though that what was supposed to a pine tree farm only had 2 pines? If this guy was serious about “breeding pine trees”, you’d think he would have had a lot more… of course, the farm failed and was taken over by a mall regardless, so who knows?

bozeke

They also managed to turn Jennifer into Elisabeth Shue somehow. That’s, uhh…uhh…that’s chaos…!

Please tell me the diesel truck was a Ford. I'm convinced Ford's electric vehicles are going to take a deep slice out of Tesla and having to have the Tesla truck rescued by a Ford would be some nice icing on that cake.

bearxor

If the truck in question is the one behind the cybertruck in the picture it is a f250/350/450 based on the badging in front of the passenger door.

WhyBuyMe

There was. It was a horrible accident in the late summer/ early fall of 1970. A cheap South African condom broke and now the world has to deal with the aftermath.

I can see that happening to a vehicle that weighs what that one weighs.

Chose_a_usersname

I drove my Rivian 10 feet off the road with 1,200 lbs of dirt and 4 people. It sank like the titanic in what I would consider soft but sturdy dirt for my old jeep

DukeOfGeek

Ya they are going to be great for rock climbing or trailer pulling, but soft soil/mud, not so much.

Mike_Raphone99

So how long before whistlindiesel makes a suspension for an off-road rivian

dehehn

Literally any vehicle can get stuck in the mud. Including diesel trucks.

HungryHungryCamel

Especially diesel trucks

metrion

Yup, diesels engines are very heavy, often around twice as much as a gas engine of the same displacement.

CRSemantics

Heavy cars more often get stuck in mud, sand, snow. It's why it's stupid to get a large suv because it has "4 wheel drive and it snows here". Get a light car and winter tires and then you don't even need 4 wheel drive in the snow.

ryguy639

Off road vehicles get stuck in the mud and need another vehicle to get them out all the time. This isn't news.

HortonFLK

“Mud.” I live nearby and it’s really this weird sucky, sticky clay, that doesn’t let go of anything. Mere mud would be an upgrade of the situation. It’s a pain in the ass trying to get cars out of it.

BracedRhombus

Anyone got a link? I can't find one.

GilmourNZ

This is the only evidence that the person has that said they seen them having to pull the cybertruck out. The picture is a screenshot of a video being filmed while driving past them while everyone is standing around other vehicles which all seem to be parked (I thought the jeep in the ~~vehicle~~ video was moving at first but even after rewatching a few times I don’t think it’s moving either - really hard to tell with such a shaky video) I would label this as misinformation for the time being and someone just looking to sling shit at Tesla and/or Elon. Internet loves to pile ontop of this stuff though so I’m sure some news articles are being written as we speak https://twitter.com/stephfischer13/status/1656002325671026701?s=46&t=RtBNdl1wkahVqkl58M3mqg

A December regulatory filing showed that Mr. Yass’s trading firm, Susquehanna International Group, owned about 2 percent of Digital World Acquisition Corporation, which merged with Trump Media & Technology Group on Friday. That stake, of about 605,000 shares, was worth about $22 million based on Digital World’s last closing share price. It’s unclear if Susquehanna still owns those shares, because big investors disclose their holdings to regulators only periodically. But if it did retain its stake, Mr. Yass’s firm would become one of Trump Media’s larger institutional shareholders when it begins trading this week after the merger. Shares of Digital World have surged about 140 percent this year as the merger with the parent company of Truth Social, Mr. Trump’s social media platform, drew closer and Mr. Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee for president.

Diesel truck being a metaphor for government subsidies

redosabe

spoiler alert... don't look into oil and gas....

ghostfaceschiller

The truth is that the entire car industry and infrastructure relies completely on utterly insane government subsidy - more than is even really comprehensible. Imagine another product industry where there are entire government agencies at every level not only building the pathways on which your product (and only your product) is able to be used, law enforcement for that, licensing, public school classes to teach kids how to use your product, giving space for your product (and only your product) to be stored when not in use (on public land often), and even enforcing mandatory extra space for your product at any new construction built.

oversized_hoodie

What other pathways enable such a broad spectrum of industrial and personal use? The big 3 I can think of are electricity, water, and natural gas. All of which the government has legislated easements against private property to provide space for and spends money regulating.

[deleted]

Internet, but I agree with your premise. Infrastructure investments help specific companies sell & deliver their product sure, BUT! infrastructure is a clear common good which the government ought to maintain for the collective interest.

ryoushi19

[Don't forget that US made trucks have had an unfair advantage due to tariffs since literally the 60s.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_tax) If you're going to complain about subsidies, maybe start with the truck. [Oh, they're a huge safety hazard too.](https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/12/suvs-trucks-killing-pedestrians-cyclists/621102/)

vacri

Look at it through another lens: ensuring your nation maintains the knowledge to run an industry like heavy manufacturing. Manufacturing and supply-chain management are skillsets, and you need a lot of people trained up in them if you want to have it available to your nation. Say China decides to cut its manufacturing output by half. Maybe the government goes nuts, maybe there's a crazy famine, maybe war with another country stops shipping around them, whatever reason. Now you need to find somewhere else to manufacture your stuff... and you're competing with the rest of China's old clients. Having a solid base of the required skillset has benefitted you. Have a look at what's happening in Russia right now, since they've cut off access to a huge amount of their markets. They can make some stuff themselves, and can get some stuff from China, but they're hurting in other areas as imports have dried up.

CrieDeCoeur

Hard to believe that when I put down my $100 deposit for a Cybertruck, housing was still reasonable, democracy was more or less stable, Elon was still kinda like Tony Stark, and we were all like “what’s a pandemic?” Meanwhile, my driveway is still Cybertruckless, I don’t even want a Tesla anymore, and my driveway is a pitted, uneven wreck.

SuddenOutset

You should take better care of your driveway

randolphmd

The Aztec is beautiful. I desperately miss my old Honda element so my taste has been criticized before.

deadgead3556

Ugliest vehicle ever.

NihilisticPollyanna

My 10-year old says it looks like low polygon mine craft abomination. I don't even understand the design. People buy pick-ups for two reasons. Either because they think they look cool/badass, or for actual utility. I feel like this car hits neither of these marks.

vhalember

It looks like [Star Fox](https://youtube.com/watch?v=ZnmnpWKoUS0&t=155s), from the early 90's.

rhyno44

His stupid cybertruck is a piece of crap. Rivian already makes a better electric truck

jdmackes

And the f150 lightning is wonderful too, plus since it's basically the same body as a f-150, panel replacements and parts are cheap, and accessories work on ice and ev version

BeerGardenGnome

This is exactly the reason I was so happy to see Ford’s approach. Right now I have an eco diesel. I use my truck for a number of activities and it is not a street queen. It’s dirty, scratched up and so on. I want to buy an EV Truck at some point in time here, but I also will need to buy things like a truck cap (topper) for the bed, AT tires, snow chains for said tires side steps, mud flaps and so on. The lightning as an example I think will largely use the same accessories which since there’s millions of F-150s on the road means lots of options and more economical options. Even things like tires if they’re an oddball size can make getting what I need difficult to find. If you do something like pop a tire so bad it can’t be patched and you happen to be half way across the country I want to be able to get one reasonably easily.

jdmackes

I was so afraid that it was going to raise my insurance rates through the roof, cause I'd seen that issue with Teslas and I figured it was just an ev problem, but my insurance went up 177 bucks every 6 months (and that was with adding the truck and keeping my other vehicle on, which only has basic insurance on it since it's so old). That's a huge benefit that I don't think a lot of people realize

santorums_cock

Base model is 60k. Highest trim is 98k. That’s more than I would have thought.

jdmackes

Yeah, it's too high to me honestly. I reserved when the lowest model was 40k and I was thankfully price protected by Ford even though I just got it on Saturday (nearly two years after my initial reservation). Trucks in general are just way the fuck too expensive.

Worf_In_A_Party_Hat

I just saw my first Rivian in the wild yesterday! It's a nice-looking vehicle. I'm not much of a car guy, but it looks so much better than Teslas truck.

Darehead

I love what Rivian is doing, but those headlights are hideous. Every time I see one I can't help but picture it as the 0_0 face.
