They don’t need to anymore. You can get a handheld 3d scanner for a few hundred bucks and it spits out pretty much perfect computer models of whatever you’re scanning. Then you can edit that and print it/fab it in just about whatever medium you’re interested in
My kid recently got braces, and she didn't have to have that plaster goop stuck in her mouth like I did. They just used a wand and some software and got a perfect 3D model of her teeth that way. She'll never know how awful that stuff tasted.
They still use the goop for some applications, I’m not sure why. When I got a crown my dentist just scanned my mouth and carved one on her cnc right there in the office, but for an implant she had to use the goop to take a bunch of impressions and send them into a lab. I guess either the lab couldn’t use STL files or the goop is somehow more precise in some way?
Pretty sure there's a How It's Made on wax figures that explains quite a bit, though may now be outdated.
EDIT - YouTube to the rescue!

Here's documentary footage showing how Harrison Ford's mold was created - [https://youtu.be/wXrwWnu7agk?si=e\_BGcq64NfVzJcAp&t=111](https://youtu.be/wXrwWnu7agk?si=e_BGcq64NfVzJcAp&t=111)
I wonder if it’s easier to get it right when it’s people wearing makeup, since you can replicate that pretty accurately with actual makeup, whereas natural skin tones can be super tricky. But also they used to get the facial structure super wrong, so there’s that too
It's the same thing with the Trump animatronic at Disney's Hall of Presidents.
They were working on it before the election results, so they had built the frame for Hillary. They had to rush convert it to Trump afterwards, and it looks nothing like him.
Probably helps when the person depicted is usually photographed with flawless makeup, super smooth skin, etc. Probably much harder to replicate someone with natural blemishes, wrinkles, body/facial hair, etc.
TL:DR Dua Lipa already looks a bit like she’s made of wax so this one ain’t too challenging.
Nah that's not it. I was at Madame Tussauds London a while back and the most impressive sculpture for me was [Morgan Freeman](https://www.flickr.com/photos/mbwebdesign/5139945175), having great detail on all the imperfections on his face.
Hands aren’t even wax anymore, fiberglass is for durability but not flexibility rather the wax is mixed of bees wax and Japanese wax I believe. That’s for the purpose of flexibility but also so the wax doesn’t melt in hot weather. The rest is likely 3D printed!
Looks like [Eera earrings](https://www.net-a-porter.com/en-us/shop/product/eera/jewelry-and-watches/earrings/18-karat-white-gold-diamond-single-hoop-earring/45666037504932874)
In Berlin, I visited the old Stasi headquarters and in one room the information card told us that we were looking at a wax bust of Lenin. The only problem was that the room clearly got hot at times, because there was just a big shapeless mound of wax on the shelf.
Are wax figures getting better, or are celebrities just making their job easier by looking “fake” to begin with?
I don’t mean that as an insult to her. But with all the fillers and makeup and stuff, creating a wax replica of her “flawless” skin has gotta be way easier than, say, Morgan Freedom.
Oh wow! That's incredible. I'm always amazed at the skill of the artists that make these, how do they make them so detailed??
They actually use 360 cameras, dots on face with markers, and measuring tools. They also can 3D print body parts
That makes sense, like mo-cap for movies/games?
I'll have two titties, please
Fetishes.
Yes that wax figure is definitely going to be touched inappropriately. As I have tickets to go this weekend.
It is…..inevitable, sadly
Hey, I'm willing to pay extra
That poor statue is about to be violated like no one can imagine
well not noone
especially when it is located in FL...
"Hey, why do her boobs look like they are melting?"
/r/terminallyonline is that-a-way, bud~
is that ur sub it has like 4 posts
Nah, didn't even think it was a real sub tbh
It was pretty obviously a joke.
My guess is they scan their face?
They used to use those measurement tools to measure distances between features in the face. I have no idea if they still do that.
They don’t need to anymore. You can get a handheld 3d scanner for a few hundred bucks and it spits out pretty much perfect computer models of whatever you’re scanning. Then you can edit that and print it/fab it in just about whatever medium you’re interested in

from the documentaries is saw, lots and LOTS of measurement.
Here's documentary footage showing how Harrison Ford's mold was created - [https://youtu.be/wXrwWnu7agk?si=e\_BGcq64NfVzJcAp&t=111](https://youtu.be/wXrwWnu7agk?si=e_BGcq64NfVzJcAp&t=111)
Go to r/painting or whatever, there is no shortage of people capable of making photorealistic art.
https://www.madametussauds.com/wien/en/what-s-inside/behind-the-scenes/
I almost thought that was a picture of her. Very accurate.
Have they finally figured it out (no pun intended) at Madam Tussauds? As half their wax works look like ass.
The quality is determined by how big of a fan the wax person is 😂
And whether the AC is working or not
That's the trick. You don't need AC if you have a big enough fan.
Badum tssss!
I was thinking the same thing. The one they did of [Lady Gaga](https://i.imgur.com/so9LI8l.png) a couple months ago in Amsterdam was also very good.
Oh shit I thought that was a photo.
I mean technically it is
![gif](giphy|1hMk0bfsSrG32Nhd5K)
I thought this was a photo too. Excellent work by the Tussauds workers.
It was a perfect illusion
I remember getting into an argument under a post about that. The argument was about whether or not Lady Gaga existed
That had to be incredibly entertaining in the category of “is this really happening?”. No?
It definitely was. They used the fact that she wore wigs and makeup as evidence.
Thankfully that person had someone as rational as you to tell them that no, Lady Gaga does not exist.
Anyone trying to start a chain of bad examples?
I wonder if it’s easier to get it right when it’s people wearing makeup, since you can replicate that pretty accurately with actual makeup, whereas natural skin tones can be super tricky. But also they used to get the facial structure super wrong, so there’s that too
The wax artists have waaaay better reference material these days, probably including 3d scans.
I was just there and it looks so real!
They should have that and not the shit Messi upfront
I too dislike messy shit.
Have you seen my countrys wax works? Heres our version of Trump: https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/s/xbW4KOVXJQ

This is an unproven myth but I honestly have seen that thing and 100% believe this is the case.
None of the Disney president animatronics are good. Obama looks entirely off, Bill Clinton looks like Michael Keaton wearing a Bill Clinton mask, etc
When they closed the hall to put Biden in, they changed how Trump looked to fix their prior mistake.
This December watch Tilda Swinton make cinema great again in: *Trump*
Trumpy D. Luffy
I mean...have you seen the real Trump?
That is hilarious. They got the tie right.
the justin bieber one looks like a random ketamine dealer
So they nailed it?
Good ass tho? 👀
Yeah, what kind of ass we talkin'?
Burning the candle at both ends kinda ass.
I'd dip my wick
Light a candle for her.
This one looks more like boobs
Well this gave me an intrusive thought.. Do you think like.. at home those wax artists are making *personal* wax figures?
Probably look nice when they are new, and over time start to look not as nice. Just speculation though
Like making the rock look white?
I've been and they look great
Probably helps when the person depicted is usually photographed with flawless makeup, super smooth skin, etc. Probably much harder to replicate someone with natural blemishes, wrinkles, body/facial hair, etc. TL:DR Dua Lipa already looks a bit like she’s made of wax so this one ain’t too challenging.
On the other hand you have wax Mark Zuckerberg looking more like a real person than Mark Zuckerberg.
Nah that's not it. I was at Madame Tussauds London a while back and the most impressive sculpture for me was [Morgan Freeman](https://www.flickr.com/photos/mbwebdesign/5139945175), having great detail on all the imperfections on his face.
That would be very impressive
I've read this probably a dozen times and can't figure out what possibly could have been a pun in the first sentence. What is it?
The person said “figured” it out. Like a wax figure.
I have no idea what she looks like, but that looks like a human more than any other I've seen.
Totally agree, this is the best wax figure I've ever seen!
I’m still not convinced it’s wax. This is insane!
About the only thing that seemed off at 1st glance for me was her skin. It looks too matte.
Wow that’s one of the best I’ve seen
Agree! The attention to detail is insane. Almost thought it was real at first
It is!
If she's wax, im wax.
you are wax
we are wax
Wax on
Whacks off
Who ever did this wax figure, earned their pay, or didn't get paid enough.
TIL only the head and hands are wax. The rest is fiberglass to ensure durability and flexibility
Hands aren’t even wax anymore, fiberglass is for durability but not flexibility rather the wax is mixed of bees wax and Japanese wax I believe. That’s for the purpose of flexibility but also so the wax doesn’t melt in hot weather. The rest is likely 3D printed!
Imagine you turn 60 and visit your own wax.
"Damn, I looked good."
![gif](giphy|xUA7aTBBzucioSlFcY)
Looks much better than [pale Dwayne Johnson](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/s/5lSLngQzDi)
That's actually Wayne Jensen, he's a very popular yodeller in Iceland. Common mistake
Aka The Hail.
Do you smell what The Chalk is cookin'?!
![gif](giphy|L4Bv2YQFwZMogkyvq1|downsized)
“At night he comes alive and cleans the place” lmao
That's Mr. Clean with a tattoo
That’s Wayne ‘The Stone’ Johnstone
I think you’ve posted the wrong picture, that’s Johnny Sins
Dwayne "The Chalk" Johnson
Looks more like a buff Noho Hank.
Wax on. Whacks off.
🤣🤣🤣 out of all the jokes why did this one get me
Yup. *sigh* .....
Can I take this wax figure to the bush
![gif](giphy|V2AkNZZi9ygbm)
How do they keep the dust off of these things? Are they encased in something? It looks so realistic, but the dust would give it away.
They’re dusted down/ cleaned every day?
bro never heard of cleaning 💀
>"Damn, I'd knock the dust off that p\*\*\*\*!" - Smokey
What's up big perm? I mean big worm
I asked this at a museum. I was told the air con keeps the air moving and filters out the dust, so specialist cleaning is only required infrequently.
Museums usually have gallery maintenance crews, they dust each room once a week.
They pay a man in pennies to lick them clean.
How many pennies?
I’d do it for free if they let me clean the original every now and then.
They clean the dust off? Do you not do this at your house?
Yeah but like… it’s furniture. I’d imagine dusting a wax sculpture would be way more intricate if they do.
A feather duster would work just fine
ok, but i personally would feel a little strange getting paid to tickle someone's titties with feathers even if they were made of wax
Nah my Wax Figures are always really dirty
Would
Not wood, wax.
Still would, either.
![gif](giphy|LpkBAUDg53FI8xLmg1|downsized)
Could
Should
Did 😏 She was like 🫠
🕯️
Will
Me leaving madam tussauds with a suspiciously Dua Lipa -shaped object up my ass
I don’t think a Dua Lipa wax figure would fit in an ass…
Sherlock, is that you?
That’s actually a good one
Hear me out...
A picture and a candle works the same just saying
So do I put the candle in one of my holes…
Earrings like nite ize s-biners
Had to scroll way too far to see this lmao
Looks like [Eera earrings](https://www.net-a-porter.com/en-us/shop/product/eera/jewelry-and-watches/earrings/18-karat-white-gold-diamond-single-hoop-earring/45666037504932874)
Nah, that is straight up a spray painted and bedazzled s-biner on that figure. The wire gate gives it away
I know someone at nite ize, I've emailed the link, hope they get a kick out of it
I thought it was actually Dua Lipa
Smash next question
They went to Home Depot for the earrings
Glad I'm not alone in recognizing the carabiners. But apparently she has actually worn some of a different style
Holy shit that’s amazing
Good lawd.
That's the first one I've seen that doesn't look like an AI image or trigger uncanny valley.
[удалено]
Nice
My sugarboo, I'm levitating.
That is the best wax figure I have ever seen.
Some guys here are absolute nutjobs
I imagine is easier to pay close attention to detail when you are making a figure based on hot women
I always wondered what she looked like
I have face blindness for her
That’s actually pretty good
This is incredible
That’s pretty decent
Let’s play a game: Dua Lipa or Gal Gadot?
![gif](giphy|Pd2W87rlmVjptTmvIK)
They're getting better. I wouldn't have been able to tell.
Definitely one of the best wax renditions I've seen so far...unlike Polish Beyonce.
This is probably the best one I’ve seen.
Why does she have a carabiner as an earring
![gif](giphy|cRNbYm7jLOjm9H8wcP)
It’s so good!
I don’t know who that is but it does look very lifelike, good work for them.
The title didn’t give it away
I wanna fuck it
I mean, we were all thinking it
You’re telling me that’s made of wax?
This bud the best I’ve ever seen
That shit is so crazy
Art.
Carabiners.
Diamond encrusted carabiners and S-biners.
It’s insanely lifelike, imagine seeing this statue while high 😭
No way… the best one I’ve ever seen. 🤯
That’s scary accurate
In Berlin, I visited the old Stasi headquarters and in one room the information card told us that we were looking at a wax bust of Lenin. The only problem was that the room clearly got hot at times, because there was just a big shapeless mound of wax on the shelf.

Am I the only one who thinks the face is slightly off?
Dula peep
They can get some so perfect but others downright terrible
There some olivia rodrigo in there
They did a good job with this one, looks exactly like Dua Lipa!
holy crap i thought that was her
That larger earing is the same carabiner I use for my car keys LMAO
what does it say about me when the first thought through my mind is "is that a Nite Ize S-Biner on her ear?"
You say I'm horny due to a candle, right?
Someone is absolutely going to try and have sex with that
100% thought this was Miss Mikkaa
That is not a wax figure of her, lol... Don't be gullible...
