They used to use those measurement tools to measure distances between features in the face. I have no idea if they still do that.

They don’t need to anymore. You can get a handheld 3d scanner for a few hundred bucks and it spits out pretty much perfect computer models of whatever you’re scanning. Then you can edit that and print it/fab it in just about whatever medium you’re interested in

My kid recently got braces, and she didn't have to have that plaster goop stuck in her mouth like I did. They just used a wand and some software and got a perfect 3D model of her teeth that way. She'll never know how awful that stuff tasted.

They still use the goop for some applications, I’m not sure why. When I got a crown my dentist just scanned my mouth and carved one on her cnc right there in the office, but for an implant she had to use the goop to take a bunch of impressions and send them into a lab. I guess either the lab couldn’t use STL files or the goop is somehow more precise in some way?

I wonder if it’s easier to get it right when it’s people wearing makeup, since you can replicate that pretty accurately with actual makeup, whereas natural skin tones can be super tricky. But also they used to get the facial structure super wrong, so there’s that too

Probably helps when the person depicted is usually photographed with flawless makeup, super smooth skin, etc. Probably much harder to replicate someone with natural blemishes, wrinkles, body/facial hair, etc. TL:DR Dua Lipa already looks a bit like she’s made of wax so this one ain’t too challenging.

Hands aren’t even wax anymore, fiberglass is for durability but not flexibility rather the wax is mixed of bees wax and Japanese wax I believe. That’s for the purpose of flexibility but also so the wax doesn’t melt in hot weather. The rest is likely 3D printed!

Are wax figures getting better, or are celebrities just making their job easier by looking “fake” to begin with? I don’t mean that as an insult to her. But with all the fillers and makeup and stuff, creating a wax replica of her “flawless” skin has gotta be way easier than, say, Morgan Freedom.
