at the end of his life he turned into a crotchety old boomer who yells at clouds and is the embodiment of everything reddit hates
he would have been very much anti-woke
shit, in his very last routine he said that school children that were victims of gun violence are pussies if they seek counseling
he said that he didnt need vaccines because he had an immune system
reddit would have canceled this man today
Most of his stand ups are on Amazon. If you think you like comedy and haven’t heard of George, you are gonna want to get on that. Most of his stuff still is relevant and he probably predicted a ton of social changes we see today. Some he said in the 90e.
Best thing about Mr Carlin was how he never reused material. He was always fresh.
He inspired a lot of great comics today.
He inspired me.
He's a big reason why I finally got out of organized religion.
He's a big reason why I didn't fit in so well in the military (for the best)
I miss him a lot.
I was in one of those “career development” 1:1 meetings with my boss the past Friday and the topic of humor/comedians came up. My boss said “My favorite comedians are the ones that are funny, but are still able to get an impactful message across.”
My mind immediately snapped to Carlin. He was amazing at this.
How can there be 16 years when there is no time?
I don't mean, there is no time, I mean, there is NO TIME!
I met his work after he passed and his mind was truly something else
Favorite comedian of all time. Other than my parents no other person has affected how I view the world more than George Carlin. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!
That bit on national and cultural pride is still gold.
"I'm Irish. Being Irish isn't an achievement; it's a genetic accident. Pride should be reserved for things you achieved on your own."
George basically invented the style of stand-up that we see today.
Before him it was just a guy in a three piece suit standing on a stage slinging cheesy one-liners. He invented the modern style of stand-up comedy by injecting social commentary and personal experiences into his act. Also he wasn’t afraid to swear or be vulgar which got him a lot of attention but also got him in trouble in his early career.
I always loved of Rodney would adjust his tie before another joke. Like cocking a 357 magnum.
Dude was one of the best. So fucking quick with a comeback or joke. His interviews are crazy
Remember, he got his start as a guy in a three-piece suit doing stand-up on TV talk shows. Johnny Carson gave him one of his first television appearances, dude had no beard, well kept hair, and he was in a three-piece suit and he looked dashing as fuck.
You chose a 50 year old picture. Can't be too surprised that people under the age of 40 didn't recognize the man.
Carlin was a big name back in the day, but he's been dead for a while now.
I have a feeling Reddit would be after him with pitchforks if he were still around today. His jokes were not skewing woke, even if he did coin the "punching down," phrase in reference to comedy.
100%
Comedy often ages poorly, especially if it's edgy or political.
It's not just changing social norms, the references often date quickly. Reminds me of Jay Leno - yes I know - talking about how he knew he was no longer relevant, when he was telling jokes to some people and no one laughed. They were just confused, smiled awkwardly like he was senile, because they were too young to get most of the references he was making.
Do a controversial bit to an audience that doesn't get it's ironic, the context, what it's referencing, or didn't grow up in the 'radical honesty is punk' period of comedy, and they won't get it.
Carlin, Hicks, Seinfeld, Chapelle, Joan Rivers, Craig Ferguson, Bill Maher, Joe Rogan... they have their time, then it's time for them to go. The smart ones retire when it's their time, some keep going and damage their legacy.
He would have so much material to work with from the last 10 years.
Him and Hunter.
Catfish Hunter?
Hunter Thompson.
[удалено]
Buttery males, right?
Hunter Biden obvs
For sure. Hunters column on 9/11 a couple days after it happened basically all came true. One of the most poignant pieces looking back now.
Holy shit, isn't that genius? Something about we are at war and will be for the foreseeable future.
https://www.espn.com/espn/page2/story?id=1250751 I read it at least once a year. So prophetic.
Bill too

“WE WERE SWIMMING IN RAW SEWAGE!”
One of the all time greats. He was hysterically funny, but also spoke the truth - which made it every funnier. I miss him too.
Most of his stand ups are on Amazon. If you think you like comedy and haven’t heard of George, you are gonna want to get on that. Most of his stuff still is relevant and he probably predicted a ton of social changes we see today. Some he said in the 90e.
They used to be on HBO in the eighties and nineties.
Yeah he had a deal with them. They are all on Zon now. I think HBO let them go
There was literally an HBO special about his life last year directed by Jud Apatow
That’s not what I said at all.
Rat shit, bat shit . . .
Dirty ol' twat...
69 assholes, tied in a knot
Hooray, lizard shit
FUCK!
Okay...
This is basically a bunghole hacky-sack.
I often ask myself, “What would Carlin think of all this madness going on right now?”
He’s in the realm of his deity, the sun, still praying to Joe Pesci, and thanking him that he’s dead instead of having to listen to all this bullshit.
My favorite comedian. I know some of his jokes by heart, simply genious
Israelis-commandos. Muslims-terrorists. I saw George perform several times and still miss him.
Biden supporters would get their panties in a bunch real fast.
A philosopher that also makes you laugh
Unsure who this is(27)
George Carlin. Genius comic. You should go down the YT rabbit hole.
Yt rabbit hole? Don’t tempt me
It's worth it, Carlin is a league of his own.
Probably forty years of stand up to go through.
Best thing about Mr Carlin was how he never reused material. He was always fresh. He inspired a lot of great comics today. He inspired me. He's a big reason why I finally got out of organized religion. He's a big reason why I didn't fit in so well in the military (for the best) I miss him a lot.
Go there. Indisputably one of the best standup comedians of all time, and there's a good case to be made that he was the best.
Damn. I just realize I totally would have back in the day.

Still a great comedy legend, especially as Cardinal Glick in Dogma.
Still watch it monthly on [YT.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwCw1kiVgE0&pp=ygUQZG9nbWEgZnVsbCBtb3ZpZQ%3D%3D)

Greatest ever 👍
I will always remember the great times me and my brother and dad had watching all the specials. RIP ya grumpy bastard!
I miss him. I would love to hear him rant about some of the current shit going on.
I think of him often. Genius.
I'm still sad by his passing.
My favourite of his stand up was the part about how US love bombing brown people. You could practically sense the uneasiness in the crowd.
He was always right, i was very sad that he predicted "guns in church" bet haven't made it to see it, he was right.
I still love that man. I wish more people would realize its all bullshit and it bad for you.
I was fortunate enough to see him live twice in my lifetime and will never regret the experience.
I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not going to see him when he played in my town in the 80s.
Any context? Never heard about the dude, maybe give a link or atleast his full name?
George Carlin. A comedian best known for his cynical social commentary and copious profanity.
Had Google who this was. His name is George Carlin and he was a comedian. He died in 2008 aged 71. Never heard of him before.

George Carlin’s biggest influence was Lenny Bruce, who really pioneered the social commentary stand-up in the early 1960’s
Big Carlin fan, never heard of lenny Bruce. Thanks for that tidbit!
YouTube has the audio of Lenny Bruce at Carnegie Hall, it’s pretty great for 1965-66, I know it was recorded before his suicide in 66
>Before him it was just a guy in a three piece suit stand on a stage slinging cheesy one-liners. No respect, I tell ya
Rodney was a legend in his own right. He was able to take that early style of stand-up but adapt it with the changing times in order to stay relevant.
I always loved of Rodney would adjust his tie before another joke. Like cocking a 357 magnum. Dude was one of the best. So fucking quick with a comeback or joke. His interviews are crazy

Cool, good to know.
I didn’t recognize him as Carlin so was just as confused.

This old man is George Carlin- [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diFDBNNmnnU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diFDBNNmnnU)
Blasphemy.

Exactly this. Also, I don't know if he was big in Europe.
Yea, sixteen years.
I have a feeling Reddit would be after him with pitchforks if he were still around today. His jokes were not skewing woke, even if he did coin the "punching down," phrase in reference to comedy.

"You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain." But I'd still love to hear George's take on the last 10 years.
Rogan never had his time. I saw him about eight years ago and all he did was ramble. I damn near fell asleep.
His time was on the show News Radio.
Eh, didn't really watch that.
The George in the photo is not the George I know
That's seventies George.
We need him now more than ever. Also, Hunter S. Thompson.
Get over it man...
He’ll be remembered. You? Ehh.
