From what I understand, it has more to do with the distance + focus than the specific lens. Basically, if you want far objects to appear closer to the subject, you put more distance between you and the subject, and zoom in. It’s how people get those “giant moon” photos, but I’m sure someone with more knowledge could expound.
Your understating isn’t far off, but their question was spot on. Focal length is the first consideration, and since movies largely shoot on primes – lenses that have a fixed focal length, they’d be choosing the lens rather than zooming.
It's aperture, depth of field, and distance.
Consider an average photo as your starting point with every dial and control set to something in the middle. Align the subject of the photo in the center of the frame. Walk towards or away from an object until it is in focus and then turn up or down the lights until the subject of the photo looks average. Besides being the most boring photo ever, it makes the rest easier to understand.
Being a friend with you and have them walk away from the camera. Looking through the camera, guide them left or right so that they continue to walk along the edge of the frame. Every few paces have them plant a flag of one color. And do the same on the other side of the frame. Perhaps unsurprisingly you will see that they've outlined a big V on the ground.
Now take the camera and step backwards a short distance. If you do the same thing, your friend will have traced out another V. This time the lines which make up the sides will be parallel with the first V and the subject of the photo will be smaller.
From this new position, zoom in on the subject until it is the same size it was before. Again have your friend plant flags. What you will find is that the arms of this new V will be closer together for a further distance. About the time that your friend is the same distance away as the subject, the arms of that V will cross the arms of the first V.
Technically it isn't a straight line across, it isn't even an arc of a circle, the plane which is intersecting and creating this line is a giant sphere with the camera at its center, but at a significant enough distance that curvature is pretty flat and so it is easily approximated by a flat plane, and because it is close to perpendicular to the ground, it is effectively a line.
The other thing you will notice is that at this distance the image has gotten dimmer. Open the aperture to let more light in until the brightness is the same as before.
Reset all the dials and position back to the starting point and repeat this process again having walked towards the subject. It might be obvious, but you can't walk forward as far as you could walk backwards. The perceived size of the subject will get bigger quickly, so you don't need to walk far. The arms of this V will spread out very widely and they will intersect the first V not as far away as the V created by stepping backwards. The reason it doesn't cross at exactly the same point is that curvature. Now because you are closer to the subject that sphere is smaller and the curvature is more apparent. You will also have to close the aperture to make things not quite as bright.
So taking all of this into consideration, you can track a dolly shot so that the zoom keeps the subject of a shot the same size, and if you adjust the aperture while doing so, the depth of field can be changed. In hind sight I should have just linked to a video [like this](https://youtu.be/u5JBlwlnJX0) and been done with it.
So why do you need to adjust the aperture? Remember that as you zoom in, you have less light in total reaching the camera. As you pull the shot you have to capture more light, so you open the aperture to increase the amount of light. Pushing the shot, you widen the field, and now you close the aperture to keep from blowing out the image with too much light.
Lastly, because you didn't really ask, how does the lens factor into this. A bigger lens can have a smaller aperture because the bigger lens is collecting more light already. The aperture affects the focal depth.
So there's a balance between distance, field of view, luminance, aperture, lens, and exposure. You can't change one without affecting the others.
Longer distance with a zoom will narrow the field and make the background seem bigger. Like a bigger moon. A shot more closely taken will have a more expansive background. The lens in this case is helping adjust the amount of light to keep focus and exposure.
Yep. I bet there are giant 'tourist brown' signs in Italian and English saying 'Gladiator filming location, 500m on right'. I mean, shit, there was probably a queue to post this photo, just like that spot overlooking Machu Pichu etc.
PS: am a NZer, and we have 'LOTR filming location' signs all over the place
If it makes any difference, Gladiator is one of my favourite movies and I remembered the scene as we were driving around as it looked eerily similar. I googled where it was filmed and it said Tuscany. There’s no signs here indicating where it is exactly so it was hard to spot the exact location but we got it in the end before the sun set.
Bro…. Did you ever consider that while you found yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun in your brow, to not be troubled? For you are in Elysium, and you are already dead!
I feel for you OP, one of my favorite movies was filmed in rural Yorkshire and I have 3 random abandoned barns and hilltop overlooks bookmarked on Google Maps for whenever I get over there. They're completely unmarked but I obsessively spent days researching filming locations and just pinpointing landmarks/matching trees like this to find them.
I was bummed to hear that Michael Richards (being a really focused and invested actor) was genuinely annoyed by Julia Dreyfus frequently breaking character. I get his side but all the outtakes make it seem like filming the show was an absolute riot
Yeah, but aside from the occasional rant by the other three, he had to keep the most energy up providing physical comedy and deliver the more difficult lines in just about every episode.
people always say this as if most of the episode plots are based around inconvenient situations. but usually it's moreso about petty grievances and the characters getting themselves into questionable situations due to poor decision making.
If you play any of the recent Assassin's Creed games, your avatar/character does the same thing any time your character walks in wheat fields or reeds or even tall flowers.
Not going to lie, some times I just walk around in circles doing this. Until Walking in Wheatfields Simulator is released, it's my go-to thing.
if you all ever want to come to Northern Michigan and eat some mushrooms and play in a big wheat field you can. we have disc golf and a river too. sometimes even fireworks...
laying in the long grass and watching the fireworks is awesome.
Dude, that sounds awesome! I have always wanted to get up to the UP for some trekking; your suggestion adds to my plans!(I did a camping trip in the mitten on the lake, about a year ago. There was some "Vikings" living in a hide structure we ran into out there.)
Anyways my particular wheat field experience was on dextromethoraphan on a southern Indiana tree farm, so I am down. I tagged you and if I ever get up there I will DM you! Peace brother!
I always thought it was a nod to the Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius, who just so happened to be Maximus's father figure. The hand gesture of the statue has been the subject of some debate and is kind of a thing in certain circles of art history from what I understand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equestrian_Statue_of_Marcus_Aurelius?wprov=sfla1
Come to think of it your absolutely right. I wonder if whoever is controlling me was like " wow look he does that thing from Gladiator when i make him walk through wheat fields!"
Ghost of Tsushima too. I love the relaxing nature elements of that game, from petting foxes to bathing in hot springs to writing haikus, just beautifully well done.
I just noticed this yesterday! Played Origins for the first time. Was wearing headphones, relaxing after a long and stressful day... just walking towards Alexandria. And suddenly my character touches the flowers.
What an amazing moment.
You joke, but if there's one thing I can say about Italians it's that they don't want their trees or bushes growing beyond a certain size. Have you ever seen those italianate McMansions (and McMudShacks) in NY or NJ?
*If you find yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you're already dead!*
Interesting fact, the dwarf gene in wheat hadn't been bred into the variety yet so Maximus would have actually had wheat up to his shoulders walking through that field.
Also the track is wrong, it wouldn't have been two dirt tracks with grass in the middle, the middle is where the horse would have gone so would wear down the grass just as much.
I’m sure he glanced over, past the supermodel in his passenger seat, and saw the trees in the distance. He pulled over and promptly channeled the spirit of Maximus while the supermodel took the photo. Later that night, they flew to Paris and made love on top of the Eiffel Tower.
My brother is an NCC, which here in Italy means you rent a car with a driver, and he works mostly with foreign tourists, especially takes them on wine tours. He knows exactly the spot, and sometimes he has to pass through a road close to it, so he mentions it because some people like the trivia and may want to stop and take a picture. It's not the only trivia he likes to throw around when he notices that his clients like to have a chat. Sometimes trips take all day, and people get more and more tipsy and chatty. I did the same job fort a few years and chatting with customers was the best part.
*The worst part was getting lost because my sense of direction is basically null and when you get inside towns with large walls the GPS fucks off. I'm talking to you, Siena*
I don't know. This scene was one of the most emotionally salient scenes in the movie (for me). If I was walking along the road to that point I would've immediately recognized it.
Things like this can happen. I was in New Zealand a little while back, and it was only in discussions with locals etc that you found out the bridge you just passed down the rode or some river, or hill was in the movie.
Yep, I was in Iceland recently and I knew they filmed a bunch of stuff there, but not where or anything, and there were numerous times we happened to recognize locations from films.
Turns out the same weird and beautiful places that make for great film backdrops also make for great sight seeing. Go figure, it’s pretty likely actually.
I saw that. It was a bit of a remix, so I didn't recognize the tune immediately. The soundtrack from the battle scenes would make a pretty bad ass song to skate to as well.

Could have been this. Obviously op isn't the first person to find this spot. But neither is someone holding up the leaning tower of Pisa. Still a cool shot though.
Interestingly enough, there's a [whole video](https://youtu.be/5ds054OF7hY) explaining everything that's wrong with this particular shot from historical perspective.
We shall have peace... We shall have peace, when you answer for the burning of the Westfold, and the children that lie dead there! Well, it is probably not far off to be honest, the country side of tuscany didn't change much, probably a few more or less houses dependingnof the exact place, but some places might have retained the overall feel
What lens do you think they used on the movie shot to cause the background to seem so close?
Probably a 85mm or 135mm
Yup. I wasn't sure of the range, but definitely more than 55. Telephoto lens far from the subject is the answer.

So yes… what you’re describing is focal length.

So you’re telling me there’s not one house to rent in all of Tuscany?
And you don’t have a square to spare?
I'm sorry I can't spare a single square.
I love how Jerry just can't let it go the whole episode.
That's pretty much the plot line to most episodes.
I like the part where George overeacts.
GEORGE IS GETTIN UPSET!
Also if they all had cell phones, like half of the episodes would be resolved immediately lol
people always say this as if most of the episode plots are based around inconvenient situations. but usually it's moreso about petty grievances and the characters getting themselves into questionable situations due to poor decision making.
The one with the maid for sure
Because he's MY butler
George is an expert at petty grievances and poor decision making
People who haven’t seen the show
The only example I can think of where that is true is the movie theatre episode.
And the bubble boy episode when Jerry is supposed to follow George to the cabin
He could’ve put Mulva’s name in his phone. But in general I agree with you.
Also the mall parking episode where they get lost. Also maybe the Chinese restaurant waiting episode.
Oh, Maestro…

As cinematic and touching as that scene is, I think it's funny cuz Maximus is just trying to die and see his family but he keeps getting interrupted

Dances with wolves, 1990.

I always think this when I see movies with two tracks like that. That's the kind of roads cars make by driving up and down not a horse.
This guy wagons!
It also wouldn't have been one massive field, but several smaller ones, segregated by stone walls and fences
I just want to know who the fuck is driving through the countryside and is like wait I have photographic memory for 22 year old movies.

But why would someone go on the Internet and stretch the truth a bit?
Eh he doesn’t say how he found it. I took it as purposeful from the get go.
Maybe he is Bob Ross….no mistakes, just a happy accident.
I dunno, to me the title says he was hunting it down and found it.
Still takes a fair bit of effort to find out where it is, go there and take a picture from the exact same spot. Let him have it I say.
I’m pretty sure it’s not even OP in the picture.
We were on a wine tour and they stopped and showed us this. Might have been the same thing. We had no idea that it was a part of it

Elysium is too good for me. I'd probably end up in Tartarus.
This 'journey' shows up in flashbacks & dream sequences throughout the movie.
And the song in this scene! Just the other night one of the Olympic female skaters performed to this song.
I saw that. It was a bit of a remix, so I didn't recognize the tune immediately. The soundtrack from the battle scenes would make a pretty bad ass song to skate to as well.
