It's quite the likeness. OP just wants us to believe it's not gonna open anything so he can go questing in peace.
Also just ran finished running through the trilogy for the first time last night. I don't think it's better than LOTR, but I'll be damned if Smaug isn't one of the coolest fucking enemies in all of film/literature.
The Maple Films 4-hour Hobbit cut is the way to watch it. All three movies cut down to 4 hours by removing all the stuff that didn't happen in the book.
Joking aside there is enough information on the internet to teach yourself.
If you're at all interested in the idea I encourage you to try. Even if it doesn't work or is absolutely shit that you destroy before showing it to another living soul, you will learn, grow, and at the very least tried.
If you're like meh the key is fine by itself then make another and do it better with the knowledge from the first one.
Or just move on to the next interesting thing you find.
All boils down to keep making, keep exploring and keep learning.

Fortunately it's a shroud lock, not one that uses pins. Depending on the tools you have, I bet you could do it.
What you want to look up is a warded lock. Relatively simple construction.
