It's fun once. I played it one time when I saw one, and I'll play it one time when I eventually go back. My gf and I liked it because it really takes skill out of the equation and makes competing fun.
It’s just awful how dirty they get and make the game. Worst machine I’ve cleaned hands down was a VND. Luckily you can just put the game into Steel Ball mode and you’re all set, though losing the main gimmick of the whole machine.
Cue ball wizard has a cue ball that you bump into with the regular balls.
And just remembered Circus Voltaire has the big ball on the left kind of like a racquetball
People used there eyes to determine the color of the ball. Then they looked at the rule card to determine which balls had which value. Then somehow without a cell phone they totaled up the value of all balls. It was a crazy time so this may not be 100% accurate and I wasn’t there to verify.
A better, significantly less condescending way to share your very interesting experience with these vintage machines might have been to say something like, "The points were actually totalled by the people playing and/or observing the game. Not by the machine itself."
I was assuming we are talking about pinball machines that are keeping score by themselves.
Can you give me an example of an electromechanical pinball game where the player counts the score?
Not stock, but I've heard of several people replacing the captive ball in Jaws Premium/LE with a TZ Powerball for aesthetic reasons and perhaps also to make the shot a little easier. The Pro version is at a lower angle so you're fighting less gravity, replacing the Premium captive ball with a lighter one I think is meant to counter-act the added slope.
Not quite like that, but Hercules uses a pool ball. It's not as fun as a massive table looks at first though

My local arcade has one. Only kids play it and only once.

*Ceramic Power Ball
Avatar LE did if I remember right.
Viper Night Drivin' from Sega had a UV-reactive "glow ball". Cool in theory, but in practice, it got soooo dirty soooo fast.

Captured ball but yeah came here to say this.
Many early electromechanical and purely mechanical games had different colored balls worth more points than others
How'd that work?

Where’s the fun in that?
