For real tho. It's what I thought but I've been looking at what seeds/plants are native, invasive, useful, etc for hours to plan my garden so I thought my brain broke. Top comment confirms I am in fact not stupider than I recalled.
Honestly I believe judging a strangers intelligence over the internet from a couple snippets of post history is alot dumber than that so idk what to tell ya.
And if it’s like the one I got my dad for Christmas it was already dying when they bought it and couldn’t tell because the store spray painted it green. Apparently this is common at big box stores during the holiday. My dad is always so jealous of my Norfolk pine I just wanted him to have his own.
We will be going to the nursery I got mine at when it’s spring again.
I hope it’s not too far gone… I just spritzed it with water and watered the pot and put it in my bathroom so hopefully when I take showers it’ll get enough humidity :/
Nah, not in the bathroom. It's possible, but I've never seen a bathroom with light sufficient for much other than understory tropicals or tradescantia.
Unfortunately my bathroom (except the toilet) doesn’t have a door so otherwise we wake up too early on weekends with the sun too bright. All my plants are in the kitchen/living room which has a ridiculous amount of windows. My plants love it but summer is hell here lol
Fingers crossed. If it is still among the living it'll be easy to overwater and rot what's left of the healthy roots, so don't leave in standing water etc... Our Norfolk does double duty as a Charlie Brown Christmas tree, so pressure's on to keep it going...
They can bounce back from a lot, surprisingly.
Mine was one I rescued from CVS (US drugstore chain), that some frickwit had sprayed liberally with glitter to make it "festive" for the holidays.
3 years on and I think I've finally managed to get it free of glitter. Mine's been struggling with dry air also this winter.
This time of year, when you've got it to its optimum soil moisture & humidity levels, watch out for fungal gnats. Mosquito bits tea added to your watering can (shot glass of the stuff to a gallon of water is my mix), a small fan at a little distance to keep them landing, and a sticky trap.
I saw them at a CVS near
Me too-Mixed in with assorted Christmas decorations, about 8” high with a little red bow. They need water & light(just like a large amount of plants do)
Hey any idea if melted snow is fine for watering? Would it be like rain water? My new spider plant is trippin and supposedly they like distilled water , which isn’t happening.
No. That's too cold for spider plants.
Spider plants don't need distilled water. Just let the water sit before using so the chlorine evaporates.
Some people will say distilled will prevent brown tips, but more often the brown tips are caused by a lack of humidity.
You say it's trippin... what exactly is going on with it? They are extremely resilient.
Does you bathroom have windows & consistent light? Main things plants need, adequate water & light survive. It looks crispy which appears to be severely dehydrated to me.
Also ferns require total different care than these pine trees.
Most people spritz to increase humidity, which it is not effective for as it only raises humidity around the plant for a few minutes. Generally having wet leaves isn’t great because it increases the chance of fungus or mold. Some plants don’t like having wet leaves at all which can result in brown spots or marks (tradescantia nanouk for example gets brown spots very easily, i precision water mine!). I do shower off my hardier plants every so often for watering and for cleaning but I do this when I know it will be warm so that the leaves can dry quickly. Water on leaves in direct sunlight can also cause leaves to burn.
A helpful tip for the future since I've not seen it mentioned: pines do look like ferns, so it's okay, but ferns are nice and soft and you can run your hands through them. Pines are pokey. Good luck!
They actually do pretty well without humidity! I’ve had one planting in the ground at my house in Phoenix for 5 years! It’s about 7’ tall now and aside from some burning on its very north branches it does very well!
Yeah this is not a fern, definitely a type of pine tree. I’m not convinced it’s Norfolk but I’m no expert.
Switch care styles to pine tree! Google will have tips
Not a fern or Norfolk /Araucaria which is not a true pine. The Norfolk has much higher needle density with shorter needles. This looks more like a spruce or juniper
So, I got this same pot from Walmart during the Christmas season. It was def labeled “Norfolk Pine”. I LOVED mine!!! It was lush and gorgeous, and when I spritzed it with water it’s little arms would spread out all happy. It was beautiful. But it came with 5 trees in one pot, and I knew I would need to separate the trees if I didn’t want them to compete with each other. So, I separated and repotted them all. They all died 😔 now they all look like yours! I am sorry for the shared fate of our pinish friends
Norfolk Pines have shallow and delicate root systems. Bare rooting them or separating them is basically a death sentence for them. Best way to “separate” them is to just cut out the ones you don’t want at soil level to thin it out, or buy a singular tree.
Not a fern, also not a Norfolk pine. It’s some kind of fir that should have gone outside immediately after Christmas.
Don’t feel too bad, OP — this was never going to survive indoors.
I believe it’s an Italian stone pine, commonly sold just like norfolks around here during the holidays. Not very good indoor plants for more than a month or two.
https://mygardenlife.com/plant-library/italian-stone-pine-indoors-pinus-pinea/
I have a Norfolk Island pine from the Christmas of ‘22 that looked almost this bad and I managed to nurse it back to health after caring for it for about 3 months. It finally has some new growth. The problem is any branches that dried out are permanently stunted and will never grow again.
That being said it is unfortunately time to ditch this one and go to your local flower shop or greenhouse and get a new one, they are very pretty if you care for them correctly.
I saw similar ones for sale this holiday season. Are you positive that there is even soil in the pot? The ones I saw were just cut branches that were stuffed into a pot. I booked right out of that sale.
I hate to be this person, but just incase anyones curious, this is actually a thing not just the store scamming you. Spruce tips (cut branches) are often sold as decorations like that. Definitely misleading if they didn’t label them accordingly
Norfolk pine, they need humidity and don’t like to be dried out. You can usually tell when when the branches are dead if they’ve gone stiff or faded. Check the entire plant and see if it’s still showing new growth or bright green branches. I’ve unfortunately found out that if the entire plant has gone stiff and hasn’t reacted to water within a few days, it’s usually dead.
This is a Norfolk pine tree. The same thing happened to one I brought to work, they need higher humidity. It looks like it might be done for unfortunately
That looks like a mummified Norfolk Island Pine. I doubt any amount of watering will revive it at this point. To see if there is any hope at all, bend the lowest branch as close to the "trunk" as possible: if it bends with crunching or breaking there may be hope. For future reference, most plants appreciate being watered when the top 0.5-1 inch of potting soil is dry. If the pot has the ability to drain through the bottom, I suggest putting in in the sink and watering until water comes out bottom then let sit for about 3-5minutes and douse again. This method works for most plants.
I have a gazillion plants and like to think I know what I'm doing. My advice is to put that fucking plant in the bin, cuz they're assholes, and then never get another one.
LMAO!! that's NOT a fern so I'm fairly certain you posted as a joke to see who would comment and not notice its a variety of pine. Pretty funny I guess but it needs water and bigger pot and read all the comments for more
Remove all the dead branches, and if there are any green ones left, start spraying them with distilled water every day. Repot that thing into a pot with a drain hole, and water it any time the soil is dry to one knuckle down when you put your finger in. These guys cannot be allowed to dry out completely or they die.
Home Depot sells Norfolk pines at Christmas in pretty pots with ornaments on them. I had one that I couldn't save, despite putting it in the bathroom for humidity. All the care guides I read said they're easy to maintain and very forgiving, so that's how I know I have a brown thumb.
Care guides are liars then. You're trying to get a large tropical tree to survive indoors in a probably not tropical location. I wouldn't call that easy to maintain.
I think they spray those Norfolk Pines with something that makes them look fabulous in the store, and they start dying as soon as you get them home and there is nothing you can do.
I think they are suffocating.
The thing about evergreens is that they’ll look alive and happy way past the point of death. Think about how long a Christmas tree looks nice when it’s literally been chopped down.
It’s more the fact that conifers store their energy in the foliage more so than the roots like with other plants which causes them to look like nothing is wrong way past the point of death. It’s one of the most heart breaking things with one of my hobbies bonsai. You repot or trim/style something a little too harshly and it seems fine for months and then one day it starts to show signs of it being unhealthy, but it’s already long gone.
I’ve never seen or heard of a conifer being sold with green painted on it, but that’s just me personally. It would almost definitely kill every plant they do it to if they do it since they’d literally be blocking the only way for the pant to absorb sunlight.
I think most are destined to die but it depends on how they start out and are transported. I got mine from a greenhouse where is was potted, misted daily, and in bright indirect light. The woman said she’d had it for 2 years. It’s about 4’ tall and thriving
Like others have said, it's a Norfolk pine. I have one that i got two years ago as a gift. I have mine on a window sill and it gets direct sunlight. I also only water it once a week. It's been thriving and growing. Keep in mind, they are slow growers.
Unfortunately, this one honestly looks like a goner. If you want to help it come back, trim the dry stems.
Honey that is not a fern
Idk why but this made me lol...for real. And I'm still doing it. Omg. Lol
Honestly, their comment was *exactly* what I thought when seeing this post. And when I saw it I had to laugh too
[удалено]
Mine: "Oh, honey. That is *not* a fern."
I went, "Honey, that's a tree."
Oh fern, that's not a honey
Exactly my thought in my head.
First thought in mine as well. And I don’t know anything.
OP It’s a pine 🌲!
Or a juniper. I thought I had a rogue pine and it turned out I was making a juniper bonsai lol
Are you going to nurse it back to health? I’m sure from the comments you might glean some knowledge
That's the plan! And I have 2 more outside if it doesn't work this time around
For real tho. It's what I thought but I've been looking at what seeds/plants are native, invasive, useful, etc for hours to plan my garden so I thought my brain broke. Top comment confirms I am in fact not stupider than I recalled.
Fern Gullible
You win today 😂 ⭐️
Underrated
This is everything
Silly goose!
I said “that’s not a fern” out loud just before reading your comment and immediately found my response paled by comparison. 😂
According to their post history, they also thought their vet sewed their dogs nipple back on… may not be not the brightest bulb here
💀💀💀
Honestly I believe judging a strangers intelligence over the internet from a couple snippets of post history is alot dumber than that so idk what to tell ya.
You might want to avoid Reddit then
Looks like a Norfolk pine starving for water
I think it’s past it’s PWP permanent wilting point
Perk up Willingness Point 😁

Take it behind the barn and put it out of its misery
Ol' Yeller style, I like it.
I tell people to "just take me out back and ol' yeller me" sometimes.
Arucaria. Not a fern. Hard to tell, but it might be too far gone. Look up care for Norfolk Island pines. They need humidity to thrive.
Humidity eh... I guess that's why mine was so happy when I put it outside last summer in our 90+% humidity? Good to know
I hope it’s not too far gone… I just spritzed it with water and watered the pot and put it in my bathroom so hopefully when I take showers it’ll get enough humidity :/
Is it getting any light?
Nah, not in the bathroom. It's possible, but I've never seen a bathroom with light sufficient for much other than understory tropicals or tradescantia.
u/RectangularAnus let me tell you that my bathroom has a skylight and I keep several plants there
.... I'm jelly.
My bathroom is so bright I had to put blackout film in the shower window lol
My plants and I are quite jealous
Unfortunately my bathroom (except the toilet) doesn’t have a door so otherwise we wake up too early on weekends with the sun too bright. All my plants are in the kitchen/living room which has a ridiculous amount of windows. My plants love it but summer is hell here lol
Arizona gang represent. Hot as hell but the sun is intense grew alot of weed by a window so like 6-7 hours of light here is sufficient
I know, I was really bummed out when you did that. Had to scope out a whole new house to get my jollies off.
oh classic rectangular
My bathroom has a skylight and a very happy pothos
My bathroom has a huge window with tons of bright indirect light. But it’s tiny so I only keep air plants in there. /:
Do the quills fall off when you brush it with your hand? It looks very dead to me from here

I saw them at a CVS near Me too-Mixed in with assorted Christmas decorations, about 8” high with a little red bow. They need water & light(just like a large amount of plants do)
I was psyched to snag a 3.5ft tall Norfolk beauty at Sam's Club (for $20 !!!) the week after Thanksgiving!
Yeah they’re around random places at the holidays
Hey any idea if melted snow is fine for watering? Would it be like rain water? My new spider plant is trippin and supposedly they like distilled water , which isn’t happening.
Melted snow is perfectly fine as long as you leave it to heat to room temperature. Rainwater is also great whenever you can get some.
No. That's too cold for spider plants. Spider plants don't need distilled water. Just let the water sit before using so the chlorine evaporates. That is obvious & I made this point by saying ferns (as op called it) are different than pines (which I suspect this is) 😮💨
Spritizing isn't good for the plant
Do you know why that is?

Pines, most, smell phenomenal 👍🏼💚
Try to water from the bottom. Let it soak in some water for a few mjnures
Oh it’s dead. Those guys don’t do well inside in the best of conditions.
It’s a fir tree, a dead one.
They actually do pretty well without humidity! I’ve had one planting in the ground at my house in Phoenix for 5 years! It’s about 7’ tall now and aside from some burning on its very north branches it does very well!
That plant is pining for the fjords
It's not pining, it's passed on. This plant is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker.
Babe that’s not a fern. At all. And I’d like to tell you about a thing called water
I only give my plants Brawndo!
Does it have electrolytes?
Where the dead fern grows
👏👏👏
Yeah this is not a fern, definitely a type of pine tree. I’m not convinced it’s Norfolk but I’m no expert. Switch care styles to pine tree! Google will have tips
I'm with you. I don't think this is a Norfolk pine. I think it is some kind of a spruce tree (that is possibly too far gone).

You're right. I own a big Norfolk pine and live in a place with many pine trees. This is a pine tree.
Awesome! I really like them. I have a Norfolk growing in my yard as well :)
Top tier shitpost. OP, just spray it with neem oil.
Wrong sub r/houseplantscirclejerk
But for real. Recently it's becoming soooo hard to tell unless I look at the sub name multiple times.
Legit thought I was already in that sub
Yeah this is obviously a troll
This doesn’t look like a Norfolk pine although it’s hard to tell by how dead it is. Scratch a bit of the “trunk” bark. If it’s dry it’s a goner.
Thats a pine tree and they need a lottt of water and direct sun. It kinda looks done already :/

Uhhh that's not a fern, I'm not great at identifying plants but I'm pretty sure that's a conifer/tree/pretty large growing plant
Omfg r/houseplantscirclejerk
That’s where I thought I was when I first read this post 😂
It dead. Compost it.
Not a fern, also not a Norfolk pine. It’s some kind of fir that should have gone outside immediately after Christmas. Don’t feel too bad, OP — this was never going to survive indoors.
Omg you "Norfolk Pine" people and your downvotes 😂 Have any of you actually seen a real conifer?
I agree! I see a very deceased bb conifer
I feel like this is a joke post!!! Also, this is definitely not a Norfolk pine!
Not everyone knows about plants.
Hmmm...fern you say....
That tree is no more. It has ceased to be.
I don’t think this is a Norfolk. Looks like the trees that grow wild in BC Canada

I repotted it with fresh soil a day after I got it and when I got it still was in actual soil, but in a much smaller pot and root bound.
it’s absolutely not a fern edit: even if it WAS a fern it needs water!
That looks like a pine not a fern
That’s not a fern… got yourself a baby pine tree
Thats a pine tree. And they grow fast so poor thing is out of space.
Water your little pine friend...
Thought I was in r/houseplantcirclejerk for a second there
Does your pine tree identify as a fern?
I think it now identifies as kindling.
That’s not a fern… but I think it might be beyond saving 😞
I had to double check to see what subreddit I was in
I have several large Norfolk pine, and several small ones. These poor fellas are well past saving.
This is a Norfolk pine tree. The same thing happened to one I brought to work, they need higher humidity. It looks like it might be done for unfortunately
Does the pot have drainage holes?
N. Pine definitely,not Rosemary
Poor little tree, try repotting, possibly root bound. Looks very dry though, if you watered it and it still looks bad tomorrow it’s prob gone.
It’s a dead evergreen
That looks like a mummified Norfolk Island Pine. I doubt any amount of watering will revive it at this point. To see if there is any hope at all, bend the lowest branch as close to the "trunk" as possible: if it bends with crunching or breaking there may be hope. He needs to be outside, to much heat in the house. At most two weeks indoors.its a mini pine tree.
Not a fern!
Maybe a fir?
Looks dead already. Put it outside for gods sake it’s a tree.
that is a very dead norfolk pine. you appear to have forgotten to water it… every day since christmas.
See you in /r/houseplantcirclejerk

f-fern?

First of all, not a fern.
That ain't no fern.

That looks like a dead Norfolk Island Pine to me. You can try to get it watered but likely it isn't coming back and you'll be nursing its corpse.
That’s not a fern
Now THAT is one plant that id be ok with someone painting. But no glitter please.
Who decieved you that this is a fern?
Put it in the attic until next thanksgiving.
Looks to be a Hemlock tree.
Not a fern, possibly a fir, and it’s probably dead.
It’s past saving…. And it’s a conifer tree, not a fern
Dead pine
“fern”
Lmao it’s a Christmas evergreen. Needs light and water

I dont think thats a fern. This looks like some kind of an evergreen, which need a LOT of water.
she gone I know it's hard but that's how it goes
