It is a flower, meaning your plant is actually doing okay. From the first picture, the pot seems way too big for that size of plant, and it might not have drainage; both would contribute to your plant not thriving if you say it's been difficult.
Only in the case of monocarpic plants(which put all their energy into a flower, but also generally make offsets throughout their life). It would take far too much energy for anything sick or dying to flower.
I had a pink dragon that was very healthy. I moved to a new house where it halted growth for a long period of time before suddenly producing 3 flowers back to back and rotting away.
I totally had to look up monocarpic and I’m glad I did! This reddit group is awesome. 😀
Here’s a definition for any other nerds who are compelled to look things up before you believe them. ;-)
Monocarpic plants can be annuals, biennials, or perennials:
Annuals: Last one season, seed, and die
Biennials: Flower, seed, and die in their second season
Perennials: Spend more than a year in a vegetative stage before flowering once and then dying. These plants are mostly herbs and shrubs, and their vegetative period can vary from strictly biennial to long-lived. Monocarpic perennials are rare in cold regions due to harsh weather conditions.
Some examples of monocarpic plants include:
Succulents: Some succulents, like agave, sempervivum, and aeonium, are monocarpic. Agave can live up to 25 years, while hens and chicks bloom in about three to four years. One way to tell if a succulent is monocarpic is to look at the flowers. If the flower is in the center of the plant, it's monocarpic, but if it's on the side, it's not.
Thanks for that, otherwise I was closing reddit and off to read monocarpic and I would have missed the rest of the comments. Yes I also read most of the comments
Many plants will flower when they feel they will die to continue their genetics. I agree, monocarpic plants do this in cycle, but it happens to plants that are in conditions not ideal to the plant.
It’s a 5 inch pot. I had to repot when I purchased it bc it was growing out of the smaller one and this was the next size I had. It looks larger in the photo. It drains pretty well. So far, no root rot and it’s been in there for over a month. I’m thinking this flower is sucking the life out of the rest of the plant and it has to go lol.

If you want more foliage, then yes, snip the bud. It will be giving most of it's energy to the flower. Add something to kickstart fertilization, the soil already looks good. Try coco coir at the bottom of the pot if you have any issues with stinking or sitting water.
If you see and old post of mine. This plant has been giving me a hard time. Brown spots and constantly having to cut it. I thought it had nothing left to give lol
Definitely chop the \*flower\* - it is putting energy into producing that so it will produce less leaves while doing this. I see some new leaves sprouting so if you cut that flower and watch the soil drainage and I bet she will thrive!
Thank you!! I cut it off, hoping it will thrive. It’s one of those plants I’ve been hesitant to throw it in the garbage, but I know they can grow to be so beautiful.
I’ve had mine for several weeks and that bulb was there since day 1. I massaged it the other day and this is what happened. I cut it off. It horrifies me lol. I would’ve been fine if it was a flower like the peace lily but this thing is gawd awful 😂
Mine opened up where it looked like a whole entitled corn on the cob with a cape around it. Shit freaks me out too but everyone says it turns to flowers so I’m waiting 😭😭😭
Bahahah I can’t see this thing turning pretty honestly. Good on your for having patience though, bc I saw it this morning and was like nope. Nope. Tf is that. EW lolll
My elephant ear bloomed and it skeeved me out. Also a weird flower. I’ve been growing them for years and never had a bloom. This one bloomed twice in a few days!

Learned something new!! Telling husband RIGHT NOW about a plant struggling with heat yet trying to produce a flower.
Omgawd. I had no idea. THANK YOU EVERYONE!
Aglaonema - Chinese evergreen. I've read the bloom does drain the plant. I've had mine about 5 years and it bloomed for the first time this spring. I left the blooms. They last about a week. *

I was under the impression that sometimes a sick or dying plant will try to flower so as to propagate itself before dying.

I learned something new today thank you
I didn’t know this! So dramatic honestly lol
Happy Cake 🍰 Day !!
Yes- that is the CORRECT impression. One last ditch attempt to survive before death
Breadseed poppies have been known to do this

FERTALISE ITT!!!!!!

Thank you so much! I cut it. It seriously grossed me out 😂
Why would it gross you out 🥺 it's a flower

Sorry, your post/comment was removed for being vulgar, discriminatory, or hateful.
The pot is not too big.
Life, life is coming from your plant lol
Right? I'm like - that's anything but lifeless!
If you see and old post of mine. This plant has been giving me a hard time. Brown spots and constantly having to cut it. I thought it had nothing left to give lol
But you call it lifeless when it is, in fact, not. Just because I've been through trauma and almost died doesn't mean that's the state I'm in still.

Oh now you’re just showing off 🤣
How much sunlight does this guy like? I think I’m giving mine too much
Omggggggg Wats ur secret
Ohhh she’s purty
You could cut it off so the plant quits expending its energy on the flower.
Thank you! Prob why this plant has been giving me a hard time since day 1.
Second this. They aren’t very pretty anyways.
They are so gross looking lol
Yeah, I hate when my agleonema throws out a bud or two. They are not attractive!
Stress bloom

How would you chop it off? I have two of these on mine and I don’t wanna kill it LOL
just snip it with some clean scissors or shears! you can snip it near the flower or closer to the base of the plant whatever you prefer
Thank you!! I cut it off, hoping it will thrive. It’s one of those plants I’ve been hesitant to throw it in the garbage, but I know they can grow to be so beautiful.
I love when flowers look both phallic and yonic simultaneously.
looks like brains
Right? Fuglyyyyy
It’s giving itself new life.
Your plant is perfectly fine 🥰
Do these actually turn into flowers? I have 6 on my plant massive ones. 6inches to a foot lol on them. NONE of them are blooming flowers yet
I’ve had mine for several weeks and that bulb was there since day 1. I massaged it the other day and this is what happened. I cut it off. It horrifies me lol. I would’ve been fine if it was a flower like the peace lily but this thing is gawd awful 😂

LOL your comments are so funny to me in an innocent way. What you're seeing *are* the flowers.
Wait so that’s IT? It doesn’t get like petals and shit? lol
LOL yes silly goose!! Different plants have different types of flowers! They all won't look like a standard sunflower or daisy
Thank you for telling me because I’ve been waiting for a big flower this whole time 🤣😭
This was my issue. It’s not pretty lol
But it's pretty in its own way :( Like peace lillies, mimosas or night blooming cactus, they have pretty flowers.
My elephant ear bloomed and it skeeved me out. Also a weird flower. I’ve been growing them for years and never had a bloom. This one bloomed twice in a few days! https://preview.redd.it/uyyw1966xm7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d872b484262bc7a13056955494b8d54b0e0fd9d
Beautiful!
Pollen yay!
As far as I've read about Polka Plants if it's that, then it's in danger. Pls cut off the bud right away.
This looks like a Dieffenbachia to me
They said spring snow plant? 🤷♀️
My bad, you are right. I didn't see that! Google tells me yes lol
Reproductive thing
It's a beautiful flower! I so love it! Congrats, little plant, you're adorable.
Everything tries to reproduce when times are tough. Thanks 👍
Life.
It’s an inflorescence.
Its not growing leaves because it is using all its energy to grow a flower! :)
It looks like a bunch of tiny teeth
Life
Mine gives me one every year

Life, uh, finds a way.
Looks like teeth
Its a Boy

Dieffenbachia is common houseplant that is deadly to cats. Don’t keep it indoors if you have a cat or might know a cat 😀
That's like saying, "Why is that woman's belly bulging? Let's get rid of her baby." Please don't do that.
