Someone on here said it best: “This is the beta for the greatest Pokémon game ever made.”

2hip2beesquare

late reply but more like pre alpha lol

Germizard

Late reply reply- you’re not wrong

KingOnixTheThird

And 10-15 years from now, some modder will finish the game and make it even better.

Rock-Springs

And the modder will get a cease-and-desist from Nintendo to take it down, two weeks later.

HunterBoy344

Takedowns mean nothing in the world of ROM hacking. Just because a hack has been taken down from one site doesn’t mean it’s gone forever; in fact, it was probably already on several other sites before the takedown even happened. ROM hacks are truly eternal. The only time a takedown stings is when the hack taken down was still in development, rendering it impossible to finish. Finished hacks are effectively immune to the Nintendo ninjas.

Rock-Springs

Yeah. I was just kind pointing out Nintendo's no tolerance policy. They're insanely strict, and we've seen many great mods get completely buried in the past from their legal team

Pure-Interest1958

I'd say more two hours they're quick on those orders.

tastyjerk

That's cool and that hurts.

YourDadThinksImCool_

I would say Legends is more.. or you could say both are.. but I feel this. It's so cute, but wasted potential. Because we've been waiting for something Amazing and complete for a Very Very long time!

TheDukeOfSunshine

This all of this, like for a mainly handheld dev that worked almost exclusively on Sprite art until gen 6 and even then on a device with less power with modern phones. They are great games, the story is fan-fekkin-tastic with good stakes and a genuinely good twist. I love the fact there is a well writren friendly rival, and the dlc elevates that. The trainers are smart, and their mons are ev trained. I love the personality they pokemon have, and they genuinely are trying to make legit competive teams easier, wish ablity patches were easier to get though.

Suspicious-Ad-3692

could u help me make my Gengar?

Morgan_Danwell

After Legends Arceus I was legit convinced what GF started to finally taking Pokémon in right direction, but it seems what it was to early to assume that, because SV reverted back LOTS of things what Legends did right and at the same time the game is overflown by bug, glitches and technical issues... And all that is just sad, because unlike SWSH, I still think what SV have(or at least had) a potential to be decent game, but in it’s current state? Nah.. just nah...

[deleted]

I enjoyed PLA 10x more than Violet

Eternal_Cycle_1

That happened cuz Arceus and Violet/Scarlet were developed by diferent teams that obviously have poor comunication. So Scarlet/Violet was a step back in several aspects compared to Arceus.

SW33ToXic9

Oh ppl don’t hate the ideas, but everything else

mrmehmehretro94

Well on one hand, it's core gameplay is one the best pokemon games and it actually has what I at least think is the best story for a pokemon game. On the other hand it was absolutely broken at launch and was very obviously rushed and unfinished and has barely improved My take is that it's a bad version of a good game as under all glitches and signs of being rushed off is one of the best pokemon games, which makes the state it's in even more frustrating for me because there is a good pokemon game there, they just absolutely botched it in the quality department and it's just such a shame

JuiceZee

I don’t know. The gameplay is notably slower. Everything feels delayed. Even opening the map. Then we have the world. Very few interactions. Really empty open world. Arceus actually had a bunch of side quests, that’s missing here. World just feels empty. Still prefer it over sword and shield though

GreenSpell7210

thats because if its running below 60fps(whatever fps it should be) time in game will literally be slower

collinsmcrae

I'm not sure if you were kidding here, but that's not true. It doesn't matter how many frames you see in a second, a second is still a second in the game. Running from point A to point B, takes the exact same amount whether it's running at 15fps or 3000fps, it's just a choppier experience in the former case.

charaichu

That logic only works on games that don't tie game speed with the framerate.

[deleted]

Welcome back 2005 🤣

Teniye

Bro fallout 4 does this 😭

Gitter2

Fallout 4 is a great game but as far as coding goes they left it simple for modders

rnnd

Except this game slows down when the framerate falls. So the game runs slower at 20fps than he does at 30fps. If you play the game, you'd notice your player runs slower when framerate drops. Not only that, opening menus, text and everything else is also slower. They tied framerate to everything instead of implementing frame skipping which most modern games do.

cmp600

The world doesn't feel empty to me. The CITIES do. SV carried over that dumb thing from SwSh where you can't go into most buildings, which is very un-Pokemon. That's a big reason why I like PLA more, the lack of cities helped the wilderness shine.

jakeplusyou

I didn’t like it at all. I thought arceus was a great game

No_Comfortable_9805

What the fuck are you smoking? Because i need it

Brief_Possible_606

I think the criticism it has received is absolutely valid and deserved. However, I got a used copy for cheap and I quite enjoyed it.

mrmehmehretro94

Finally someone else who can see both sides

[deleted]

There are more of us, but we’re usually drowned out by the loud ones on each end…

KobaruTheKame

As in every social media ever, things are pretty polarized, i personally like to make my own oppinions. Hope someday SM turns more neutral and open minded, but we are sadly faced the other way around...

[deleted]

There must be a lot of used copies around then

Huge_Incident2230

instead of complaining, a proper review from the other side who likes it would be appreciated.

LeratoNull

**Pros:** \- Top 3 writing, definitely on the level of BW1 and SM. Arven is the latest in the line of 'oh, they accidentally wrote an entire character!'. Even outside of main story, stuff like the classes at the academy are both very informative for casual players and full of soulful writing. Professor Gible is the best teacher, yall. \- Terastalization is probably the least dumb gimmick so far, although I look forward to seeing them fuck it up slightly if the leaks are true and the DLC includes special Tera forms for specific Pokemon. Anyway, it's nice that it's a gimmick with both offensive and defensive potential. Definitely the most complex gimmick, it's nice. \- Designs this gen are goddamn banger. The starters are kinda lame for the most part, although I came around on Meowscarada when I realized with Protean it's basically just a Persona protagonist. It has the Wild Card!! That aside, though, just so many great designs. A bunch of new awesome Dog Pokemon? The sickest box legendaries since arguably Gen 3? Megaman-ass mfers @ Ceruledge/Armarouge? Tinkaton, the absolute best Pokemon? The list goes on. Just so many great ones this time. **Cons:** \- Absolutely wasted open world. Definitely the definition of 'open world just to be able to sell the game as open world, but the game isn't at all balanced or designed around the fact that it's open world'. \- Performance issues. Massively inconsistent from Switch to Switch, which is one of the reasons opinions on the game are so varied. It runs just fine for some people and it's unplayable for others, and it is actually fully documented that it is not just 'different people have different tolerances', but rather the game does run at massively different FPS from handheld to handheld. \- Pokemon games no longer being allowed to launch with a postgame and having to wait for a DLC to get it is really rough, especially since Raids are *extremely* not fun content.

Sephiroth040

> Terastalization is probably the least dumb gimmick so far > >\- Designs this gen are goddamn banger. I somehow disagree about those two things. The terastalization is pretty neat, I agree with that completely, but mega evolutions were not dumb, I cannot say why I really loved them, but they felt good somehow, hard to explain. ~~But I sadly have to really disagree on the designs~~. I have to kinda disagree on the designs. Best box legendaries since Gen 3? Gen 4, 5 and 7 where pretty solid, too (even if one of each versions had a superior pokemon). Miraidon is amazing, but Koraidon is awful. The dolphin, the mice, Pawmi evolution, Cetoddle evolution and Dudunsparce (wasted evolution) were some of the worst designs imo. BUT, after looking through the list to have the english names, some where pretty great. Sadly, when playing the game most designs just felt underwhelming, the paldean forms and future pokemons included. But thats just my opinion, I overall agree with you. The cons really sound extreme, but having played the game myself, I know they are 100 percent true...

Nincompoop6969

Terestalization is very cool mechanic but I'd have to say it looks dumb

LeratoNull

\> Dude thinks Dialga/Palkia have good designs Lmao

[deleted]

Palkia has one of the best designs next to groudon for a legendary Pokémon, and thats without giratina entering the chat (which is my favourite legendary). But I guess evaluating designs is very subjective for the most part.

SW33ToXic9

Some new gen pokémons look great but many are rly stupid like they tried to recycle prior ideas. Like how many mouse pokémons do we still need?!

raptorgator0

A lot of the new Pokemon look AI generated to me. I know they aren't but they just look it

Gitter2

Mega evolutions sucked cause it meant you had to have one or two of like 10 pokemon

Htown-bird-watcher

Violet runs fine on my 1st gen Switch Lite. I have a low tolerance for poor performance. How strange. I wonder what went wrong for that to happen.

LeratoNull

Switch Diff is real with ScarVio, yeah. Nobody's been able to pin down what factor makes it run well for some people and unplayably for others.

InvestigatorUnfair

It's bizarre It absolutely deserves every single tiny bit of criticism it gets. The performance is awful, the bugs are plentiful, and the customization is piss poor. But the game itself is fun, and it has probably the best story a mainline Pokemon game has presented us with since BW. Imo it's only worth it if you find it cheaper than full price. It's a good game but you can tell it's held together by duct tape and dreams.

RemediZexion

tbf if we are to criticize bugs we might aswell torch the whole serie

jpg30000

Bugs in the older games don't even come close to this though

RemediZexion

ye they were waaaay worse

jpg30000

🫠🫠🫠 Nice try

RemediZexion

I mean do you even know the bugs in the old games? Did you forget that Missingo is a thing? Do you know that gen 4 games run like shit?

raptorgator0

For a modern Pokemon game that was so hyped up from the start, do you think that's still OK? Especially on the Switch 😅

RemediZexion

you missed the point, which was that track record of Game freak is terrible and as such ofc the games will always be a mess

Chaotic-Stardiver

Missingno is a gen 1 only thing. Gen 1 is criticized to death for its game breaking crap. You act like Gen 1 is held on a pedestal and all its flaws are ignored. Gen 1 is praised for its nostalgia and for starting the entire franchise, but no one wants to play gen 1(R/G/B/Y) when gen 3(FR/LG) improves on everything plus more content. In terms of critique, the main problems each generation have are: * Gen 1: Busted as hell, wonky sprite work, a list of bugs and glitches a mile long, most Pokémon are "not viable." Fun to connect to Pokemon Stadium. * Gen 2: Crappy places to level up, mid-game gym choices are nice but again leave players with very little options in terms of prepping for gym 8/E4, post-game is nice but is otherwise a gutted Kanto. Fun to connect to Stadium 2 but I think people don't remember it as much. * Gen 3: No trading/transferring Pokémon between 2 and 3, HM reliant, Loss of day/night cycle, berries are the only real consistently timed event, the rest is "wait a day, hope RNArceus gives me a swarm." Widely accepted as one of the best generations due to how much crossover it has with Hoenn, Kanto, and the Gamecube games, and Emerald's Battle Frontier, which has still not been implemented in a modern Pokémon game to this day yet is widely accepted as one of the most challenging post-game content of any Pokémon game. * Gen 4: Prior to Platinum, damage calculation was about as fast as Slowpoke's thought process, too many legendaries, post-game is a bit lacking compared to Emerald, even in Platinum. HGSS still doesn't solve the level up problems mid-game, but the post-game Kanto is much more fleshed out. Day/night cycle is back. Voltorb flip is better than gambling but people like the old game corner more. Widely accepted as one of the better generations due to more crossover, expansion of lore, and transferability to Pokémon Battle Revolution. I could keep going, but I'm getting away from the main discussion being derailed by your "point." It's a shit argument to say, "We might as well just throw the baby out with the bathwater." Modern criticism of Pokémon games are valid. Criticism has always existed since generation 1. It is all valid and we should hold *the highest grossing franchise on the planet by a wide margin* to the highest standard. There is no excuse for a franchise that makes so much money off its consumers to make this bad of a game at launch, to the point where so many have opted out, not because they felt "aged-out" of the system, but because of actual quality control problems.

RemediZexion

I have news for you about other franchises quality control these days

Chaotic-Stardiver

I am very well aware that many other franchises have a quality control problem. Does that excuse The Pokémon Company for their poor quality management? We're in the *Pokémon* subreddit talking about *Pokémon* problems. How much more money do they need to make before enough is enough? Again, your argument isn't great. First it's "Well if we're going to criticize a single game then we need to obliterate the rest of them." Now it's, "We can't hold *the highest grossing franchise by 40% to the runner-up* to a high standard because other companies have equal if not worse quality control." It's not very clever, nor is it insightful, to provide a half-baked response because you don't want to defend your point. You can just say you don't have anything to say and ask the mods to lock your comment.

RemediZexion

I also moved on from this topic, I dunno what you expected lol. My stance hasn't changed nor whatever you wrote did, I'm glad you aren't somebody entirely blind but you misintrepreted a months old argument and made a text wall to rebuke it

Gitter2

Bugs in the old games could break your game. Full stop, not even restarting could always fix it. Bugs in this generation are inconvenient

thunderisland

The plot and characters are terrible and forgettable. Arven is the sole interesting character and there's no real rival or antagonistic force until really the post game. However all the wild pokémon being visible, the art style and transversal is great

Gitter2

It has the second best story of any pokemon game. That's one of the few things people liked about it. You skipping all the dialogue doesn't change that

thunderisland

I didn't skip any dialogue. I was just hoping the story would be grander and the characters more interesting. Arven wanting to heal his pokémon, but not enough to bring his full team to help me 😂 was compelling. But everything else had next to no stakes and felt very inconsequential. After being surprised how much I liked barry, seeing nemona be there just to only talk about battling nonstop got really old. Then you're at first supposed to see team star as the threat. They live on the outskirts of Paldea and the biggest threat to their reign is being expelled? Lol. I actually really enjoyed paldea's region design, the multiplayer features were awesome, QOL additions, the freedom and the game art style could be stunning. I think it was a tone thing. Like gen 1 had moments of being too dark ala Cubone/pokémon tower but then there's this which is the opposite and it feels too kiddy. I'm just looking for that all ages balance mario does so perfectly.

trademeple

Because kids and other people never played the old games to know what is missing and what should be better they are simply igorant to the quality of the games because of that.

SW33ToXic9

That’s true. If you’re 7 years old, then the game is amazing. For most of us? Yikes.

H358

There’s a lot to like about it. It’s a really cool new take on Pokémon. The multiplayer component is more fleshed out than ever. And it has one of the settee’ strongest casts of characters and stories yet. …and yet I just couldn’t get into it. A lot of the criticism is about the lack of polish, ugly graphics, frame rate and bugs and those are absolutely glaring issues. But personally, what killed it for me was how barren the open world was. Every location, be it towns or wilderness is just so…empty. I ended up dropping the game after getting about halfway through each path (the fact that it is, once again, mindlessly easy doesn’t help). On paper, I should love this. Pokemon taking on an Octopath style semi open structure where you can explore and go to story flags whenever you wish is exactly what I’ve wanted from the series for years. And yet I just got bored. It’s the first mainline Pokemon game I didn’t even finish.

trademeple

Still not designed for consoles why can you still not hand a joycon to your friend and play with them like in let's go eevee or like the battle mode in the stadium games.

snivyking_11037

In what world would Scarlet and Violet be playable with more than one joycon?

trademeple

Stadium and battle revolution had a local multiplayer feature.so it made sense when Pokemon mainline went to console to also have it there too without the need for two consoles and games like the handheld games. But nope these games still feel like they were made for a handheld since there's no mini games like stadium or a single console local player battle mode. Splatoon has this problem also why the heck can I play smash bros and Mario kart with multiple players on the same console but not Pokemon or Splatoon. Made sense on the 3ds ds and Gameboy since you could not hook controllers up to it but makes no sense on the switch.

Marzopup

In terms of ideas, design, and story, it's the best game in 6 onward era, full stop. It might even be the best story ever in a Pokemon game. In terms of performance and graphics, it's the worst.

Accurate_Pay_2242

What? The story was garbage

Marzopup

Best story is a pretty low bar for Pokemon games, so honestly that isn't mutually exclusive xD It was for the most part internally logically consistent, characters had arcs, and it even managed a semi decent reveal with the professor being an AI at the end. And it was worlds better than gen 8 imo at least. Out of curiosity, which gen had the best story in your opinion? Usually I hear 5. I did specify 6 onwards, so did you prefer gen 7's?

Accurate_Pay_2242

Gen 5 was my favorite story but I admit I’m biased, I play every new game but I only continuously play gen 2-5 because that’s what I grew up on so it’s peak Pokémon for me. Pokémmo is dangerously addictive for me.

Marzopup

Actually we're not super different--ScarVi is the first gen I actually finished since 5, and 5 is my favorite gen too! To me objectively I don't think the whole schtick with Team Plasma makes a ton of sense, but N and Ghetsis are such great characters that it doesn't really matter. N is GOAT.

Accurate_Pay_2242

Yeah I agree, I viewed it as a cult run by Ghetsis which made it really cool, there was a lot of religious themes within the story that I thought were interesting. I viewed the white and black as peace and chaos constantly at odds but with no real prevailer just balance. The second game was nuts and a great sequel equal to gold/silver

MrZentase

I can not thank you enough. Pokemmo has become a new addiction.

Some people are okay with looking at cute sprites and obsessing over IVs and stuff, but the greater audience loves pokemon for the universe and the story. Is it too much to ask that they put as much effort or even half as much into a pokemon game as Nintendo did into Zelda? For gods sake pokemon looks like a *good* GameCube game and STILL has framerate issues. If my GF didn't buy it for me I wouldn't have ever purchased it. I love pokemon and put possibly thousands of hours into Yellow, Diamond and Pearl, Sapphire, Black, Platinum and immediately hated Sword and Shield because of how terrible it looked. Pokemon has always had a charm with how immersed you feel in the world - the lush fields of flowers and windmills in P&D, the bridges in Black and White. I cannot recall a single location I liked or was awestruck by in Sword and Shield and the only place I can recall with any detail and say I liked was obviously the school. OF WHICH YOU CANT EVEN CHANGE YOUR OUTFIT IN YOUR ROOM. No teachers have any real story. Gary is god of course and an absolute culmination of the dogged hours Gamefreaks teams have been forced into making a subpar game that runs and looks like trash only to be pumped out every 2 years. At least arceus was a stand apart story that looked impeccable and had a rich world but it's still unreplayable. Personally I won't be buying another pokemon game until they put a reasonable amount of effort Into the world and the visuals. It's a pathetic excuse for a AAA game, especially post TOTK release.

Accurate_Pay_2242

If your playing Pokémon for the story your main preferences align with 10 year olds. The weakest aspect of every Pokémon game is the story including the new titles.

techzilla

ummm... this was their horrible attempt to mimic what you loved about BOTW, and it kinda bombed. Pokemon is not Zelda, besides post-game content, it should be somewhat linear. Entering houses is a hardcore requirement.

Leather-Cobbler-9679

Sorry.... Did you read my comment at all? I just realized how silly your response was. It has nearly nothing to do with the point I was trying to make. You're hyper focused on like 1 word I said. Pokémon looks like rotting gutter trash , botw looks like heaven. What IS your point?

techzilla

1. I don't play any game for its scenery. It's cool when the graphics look great, but it really isn't a reason to choose a game over a demo. Scenery isn't enough to keep a person engaged for large amounts of time. It matters, but it's not what makes a game great, it's just easier to grasp and judge. 2. Especially prior to the switch, all Pokemon games were played on fairly dated technology, even when they were the latest portable Nintendo systems. The portable systems were not nearly as powerful as what was possible, yet the games were engaging and fun. So what made them great was NOT what you think made BOTW or TOTK great, and we know that conclusivally. 3. There was no reason for GameFreak to over extend itself so much, and not deliver on fun and engaging, because it wanted to out openworld BOTW. Sword and Shield was better than Scarlet Violet, because it didn't make the whole game open world like BOTW/TOTK. Open world has benifits for post-game content, but the world should not be a vast expanse like TOTK... know why? TOTK and BOTW evoke feelings of solitude, Pokemon should feel alive and communal.

Leather-Cobbler-9679

As the years go by, I am astounded that people can look at the games that are sword and shield and actually defend them in any regard other than that they were okay. They were not good. On the same system that gives us a lot of beauty, game freak delivered what I find when I clean out of my eavestroughs. Those games make me hate this company, and the manipulation you've gone through to have them make you think those games are adequate is akin to soviet era brainwashing. I hope your eyes are open to better experiences than Pokémon, gotcha and other drivel that seeks to steal every cent it can from you through marketing, and not love for the game. You are defending a corporation.

techzilla

You sure you didn't mix up Scarlet and Violet with Sword and Shield? I didn't play Scarlet and Violet that much because it wasn't fun and engaging, it was OK, but it was not great. Sword and Shield was fun, It was rough at times, but the content was engaging. Better experiences? I have TOTK and BOTW, I played them also. You don't know what makes a game magical, so you think "graphics not good enough, that's all". Or maybe you don't think anything at all, and that's just what the crap reviews told you was lacking. SV wasn't fun enough, the systems in the game were more for show and weren't actually useful to the player. They spent so much time on 'open world', they neglected the shit that matters most of all. Now that you ruined the game, you're like "I hate you, Pokemon, and GF". OK great, then shut up, and stop writing game journalism. The pressure you brought on GF fucked up SV, and instead of being like "I thought pokemon needed to be more like BOTW, I'm sorry I ruined it for everyone". You're like, "the problem is everyone else, not me". I'm not defending GF, they made the dud, you just have no idea how game journalism shitting on anything not openworld got us here. Bro, it's easier to put more effort on scenery when you can't move literally anywhere on the map. You know that?

Leather-Cobbler-9679

These are all very valid points! I appreciate you not just calling me an idiot and actually saying why you feel the way you do AND the facts! 💕 I would however argue that it's not players that had any impact or influence on the game's production. You can't say that any player asked for a worse looking, worse game released quicker with more bugs. Nobody wanted that. What I wanted for them to do is to take 5 to 10 years to make the pokemon game everybody wanted to make, the pokemon game that the DEVS want to make - not the constant churning out of a title every two years to make the board/ CEOs money. Keep in mind the bulk of pokes revenue are from new merch sales. In my opinion they've damaged their own reputation by reducing the quality as time went on, which is not to say that games aren't harder to develop now, it's just to say that the company should be taking the time to develop the games as opposed to the constant production. I've never commented or sent game freak a letter asking them what I wanted, I'm just telling you/this sub what I hoped for. It is totally up to the game developer to release a game polished or not, not you or me. My comparison to the switches LOZ is simply a baseline for what switch games could / should look like. We all know that game freak stopped taking the time to make their games as good as the console they're on. I think that's where opinions kind of muddy the water? Back when they had to produce DS games, they only had to work within the limitations of the ds, so you're totally right to say that, but we know that new games take more work and therefore it could take longer to produce, so it should if you want the same quality! An artist doesn't complain about choosing a larger canvas then having to paint it!

techzilla

You might honestly not have any clue how game journalism caused this, but their constant comparison to BOTW and constant promotion of "openworld" screwed GF up very badly. So when you compare shit to BOTW, that's what people hear, they don't hear... a generically good game, they think "a game like BOTW". Now I don't think releasing a mainline game exactly every 2 years is necessarily a good idea. I think fixing up the bugs would have made lazy game journalists happy.... know why? They play a game for a few days, a week tops. FF7Remake, was a great game, story changes aside. It's not open world, and was better because of it. Now I would like more openness, but only if it can be delivered in a way that doesn't undermine the quality of the game. Freedom to do w/e you want != good game, but it makes producing a game without bugs much harder, and it expands that canvas so much larger. GF needed a smaller canvas to deliver a great game, an artist shouldn't complain, they should throw out that beach towel and put a small canvas on their stand instead. Know why they didn't? \`cuz BOTW, that's why! You're right you had nothing to do with it, game journalists did, but you're promoting their talking points thoughtlessly. That's what game journalists mean when they say 'like BOTW', they mean openworld and expansive like BOTW. Great for cool scenery, can work for an exploration/adventure game, but provably shitty RPGs.

Angel_of_Mischief

Pros: - Open world means freedom to explore - ease of building competitive ready Pokémon. - decent to good stories. - good starters and Pokémon in general - good new battle gimmick Cons: - Theres little to actually explore. There’s a serious lack of biome diversity, no hidden areas, no homes or cities to explore. The map is 80 percent grasslands with nothing memorable about any of it. There’s no incentive to talking to people. - Artstyle. This push towards realism is awful and doesn’t fit pokemon. It’s something we consistently see called out. The characters look like porcelain dolls. Everything is super desaturated and and doesn’t stay true to the unique anime style that Pokémon is known and loved for. SwSh, let’s go, pokemon snap all look significantly better and more inviting. - some people are tired of having a non evil team for the third time in a row. - dexit and lack of home is really limiting peoples ability to build teams they want. - the new raid system is frustrating for a number of reasons mainly desynchronization, the ui constantly being ripped from you, shields make a ton of Pokémon unviable because they can’t do enough damage to even put dent in them. Which leads too… - poor endgame. Raids aren’t in a good place. You have a world that isn’t interesting and lacks any sort of variety so exploration feels not good. So a lot of the endgame just doesn’t feel good. I struggle to continue wanting to play outside of a few typical competitive battles but even that is difficult because the lack of Pokémon limits team building. - bugs and general issues. - removal of options

Chaotic-Stardiver

Imagine if we got Pokémon in modern Hyrule(in terms of biodiversity)? Wouldn't that be something.

cmp600

I agree with some of your points but '80% grasslands' is a serious exaggeration. There's a giant tundra in the middle of the map, there's a desert area, a mine area, a giant lake, a sea on the perimeter of the map, lots of rocky cliffs, a couple more forested areas. The cities suck though. And there's is a lack of 'hidden' areas as you say but it's not like the gold standard of open world design in the series (Legends Arceus) was wildly more diverse than Paldea. And you miss evil teams? When have they ever not sucked? Endless grunts with the same 3 pokemon? No thanks! EDIT: Also, I think diversity comes from the Pokemon that you encounter. If you're like me and you enjoy completing the pokedex then a lot of the appeal of different sections of the map comes from what creatures you'll encounter, not necessarily what the landscape looks like.

cmp600

Not 80%, you're exaggerating is my point

Angel_of_Mischief

My bad 70%. That probably wouldn’t be a exaggeration

cmp600

If you're being reductive sure, but there's a lot more nuance in the landscape than your giving it credit for. It's not just green = grassland lol

yugishidoshi

it’s fun to play. if you like pokemon you’ll have a decent time.

Brownondorf

Pokemon SV's problem is about performances, the game runs like crap and there's a gigantic list of graphic bugs, tera raids are also broken, both solo and online, they lag so much and "funny" stuff happens all the time. But it's playable and fun, gameplay is good and the soundtrack is a banger, the last part of the story is one of the best in the series!

techzilla

It's not just about performance, if ultra sun performed less good it would be a truly great game with some performance problems. SV just doesn't feel right, making it open world like BOTW was a mistake, pokemon games should be more linear until post game. Buildings must be entered, towns should feel alive.

henchmaster

I completed most of the content, but it was a buggy mess and preformance stuttered at times in handheld mode, especially when battling in cities. It was fun, but felt really unfinished for its price tag

Kyokkai

It's pretty bad. I honestly don't know how low some of the commenters standards have to be to say this is good. The open world is empty and pointless. There is no reason to explore, you catch your team in a casual playthrough, you collect a few TMs and that's it. After that the world is just this vast empty expanse with wild pokemon and trainers peppered randomly throughout. They removed TM's. Now you have to go collect a bunch of stupid Pokemon materials through endless grinds to get good moves on your Pokemon, unless there's a node you can get them in the overworld. This is probably a poor attempt to give the oversized empty world a purpose. Towns are dead. They have no character anymore. There are no more buildings to enter, Gamefreak did such a rush job on this that shops are menus and clothing shops, sandwich shops and gyms are copy pasted across this boring, dead world. Nobody worth talking to, no life, nothing going on. Just travel from one dead town to the next and topple your gym leader, or your star leader, or your titan. I'm sorry, this is NOT minor, if ANY other video game franchise did this, they would be utterly decimated online by enraged gamers. But Pokemon can serve everything barely cooked and everyone eats it up and makes excuses for it. It feels like a crappy Chinese MMO from the old days, where there's a town that's basically set dressing and all the npcs that matter are lined up in neat little rows. The rest of them wander aimlessly, giving you pointless text when you interact with them that serves no purpose and might as well have been ai generated. Battling is fine as it ever was, but it's slow as hell. 2023 and we still don't have a turbo button, skipping animations is no longer an option, Pokemon and pokeballs can't handle the terrain mapping so they constantly clip through it or float in mid air. It's great that we can finally remember moves for free without spending some stupid grind item but the tradeoff is being able to have a TM that never runs out. So it's not exactly something I expect them to keep. The story is... better, but again our standards for this series are so low... All this is, is a generic anime story. A bunch of kids go and save the world and discover that friendship is all that matters. Kissy, huggy, toddler level writing. There's like one actually good arc with ONE of the kids, Arven due to his father being involved in the plot and him being bitter with him. The other two are... not good. One is a flat arc character, which isn't bad on its surface, Goku is a fun flat arc character in DBZ, BUT the problem is in DBZ the flat character changes other dynamic characters around them. Our flat character is called Nemona, and she's totally one dimensional. All she gives a crap about is battling. She never registers another emotion, she never reacts unpredictably. She doesn't feel like a human, she's a caricature. A little basic lazily written plot device with no depth. Literally isn't even needed. The other character is okay but kind of dumb. The plot involving her is just another one of those anime plots where a character COULD easily do something in a simple and direct manner, but instead due to some ridiculous nonsensical reason, decides to invent some overcomplicated scheme to make you relevant. I'm sorry, if you think any character other than Arven and their parent character are well written, you have no standards. The rest are so bare and basic any generic bottom of the barrel anime has a character exactly like it. Honestly, Pokemon plot has NEVER been good, and I don't care about it BUT I feel compelled to slap some reality into some people because they think because we've had no writing up until now that any crappy writing is now some sort of master class in writing. Like seriously, to like this unironically you have to have never had a single thought in your head about anything that you've ever seen or heard in your life. Just had to have sat in front of your screen zombified. The character customization has never been worse. You have to wear a dumpy uniform that makes you look like a 5 year old the whole game. Like ffs Gamefreak, I haven't been 5 since Pokemon Yellow, can you wake up? Because of how slapdash the world is there's no atmosphere and there's not a single memorable location other than the giant school. There's nothing here but a husk. They got a grand total of TWO characters right. And the plot is again, basic anime retread we've seen done the exact same way a million times, except with no deviations and nothing to make it stand out. Gameplay is streamlined in some areas, but then has features walked back in others. The open world is actually pointless, under no circumstances is this at all better than the old route system with their set spawns. At least those routes had character and some thought put into them. I challenge you to tell me a feature without googling of any region of the map. You can't, because it's generic, pointless, and unnecessary. Look I've been a Pokemon fan for a damn long time. Too long. I played this. I played it to the end. I didn't come in wanting to dislike this game, but it just isn't the game we deserve after in my case, 25 years of dedication, longer for some, shorter for others, but dedication all the same. If you actually liked this game, please go sit in the movie theatre and let the drool drip from your chin in front of the latest Hollywood cash grab movie. Please stop playing Pokemon so that we have a chance for them to make something not generic, dull, and lifeless again. Failing that, please raise your standards. You could be having way more fun if Gamefreak wasn't pushing these turds out once a year now. It's a sad day when a team of absolute amateurs can deliver a fan game that looks better, performs better, is more innovative, and just plays better in general than official games.

raflesb

A year later but couldn’t agree more with what you said, I’m halfway through the game and the open world is just so disappointing, I was trying to have some fun in the towns, but as you said, they’re all generic and full of useless NPCs that wander around with just one text bubble above their dumb heads. It irritates me so much.

raptorgator0

Agreed. Everything feels too randomised (like spawning but done badly)

techzilla

By contrast the towns in Ultra Sun felt alive.

Chaotic-Stardiver

I think the biggest problems with modern Pokémon battles are the fact that everything is stated in separate text boxes, separately from the animations. So a typical 3 turn situation goes: 1. Cooltrainer Balgarius would like to battle! 2. Cooltrainer Balgarius sent out Bastiodon! 3. Go, Galvantula! 4. \*choose different Pokémon to counter Bastiodon\* 5. Galvantula, return! 6. Go get 'em, Machamp! 7. Bastiodon used Iron Defense! 8. \*animation plays\* 9. Bastiodon's Defense sharply rose! 10. \*choose action\* 11. Machamp used Low Sweep! 12. \*animation plays, Bstiodon is hit\* 13. \*health bar drains\* 14. *It's super effective!* 15. Bastiodon fainted. 16. Player defeated Cooltrainer Balgarius! 17. "Doh dookie poopy I really wanted to win that one." 18. Player received 42069 Pokedollarios for the battle. Looking at all the text and animation splitting, You could easily combine 8 lines into the other 10 and make it much shorter. The only major slow-down points should be when you are deciding what to do on your turn. After that it should be pretty seamless, but instead you have to wait like 15-30 seconds per turn just to make it all happen. And don't get me started on weather conditions, why those have to be stated every turn still baffles me. Just let me know when it starts, put an icon notifying that it's up, and let me know when it ends. Boom that's all ya need.

KobaruTheKame

Is one of my favourite games, it feels fresh and it's history is very good, but then maybe I'm biased by the fact that is based off my home country... The pokemon dessigns are top tier though.

Gulthrazda

It was okay for me. It wasn’t my favorite but it isn’t my least favorite Pokémon game either. Though I’ve decided I’m taking a break for a few generations. Last few games the best part has been the new pokemon which I can enjoy with out actually playing.

relight818

It's a fun game with horrible optimization, horrible bugs and glitches at every turn. Ignoring all that, I think it's only a slightly disappointing entry, there were talented designers behind this one to balance out the special needs workers at game freak

Reallylazyname

Performance wise, they're on the low end at best. (There's definitely been worse on the Switch and in general) Gameplay wise, not as fun as Arceus, but it's still fun to run around and goof off, especially if you like to coordinate with friends to do stuff. Multi-player is fun with friends. Single player experience is Pokémon. Story wise, starts light, ends strong. There is clearly a winner amongst the cast as to who get fleshed out and who doesn't. Luckily that winner has the best storyline imo. (Your mileage may vary) Music wise - Team Star's Boss theme is a banger. Final Boss Theme A and Theme B are bangers. Elite Four Lobby Room is a banger. Final Zone is *mwah* chef's kiss Overall performance aside, its still pretty fun, arguably more than i had with SwSh (pre-dlc), USUM (pre-new endgame), and BDSP (my own fault, shiny hunting a starter is miserable)

blackjackgabbiani

This game is both fun and emotionally devastating and I love it to bits.

scribblerjohnny

I enjoyed it, but man do I have complaints. Some of the coolest-looking new Pokemon. Some are even good in battles.

Affectionate-Ad1060

Extremely fun, the first time I completed the Pokédex since Gen 5. BUT the glitches and the drop in frame rate is a huge issue, especially for how big the Pokémon franchise is and at the price the games were at. They should’ve released it later this year to fix the game up and allow players to not lose their save files and fully embrace in the game and enjoy it more

Dentman19

I think the issue is not that it is not fun. If you like the gameplay of previous Pokémon games, odds are you will enjoy this. I have always been someone who can look past graphics and frame rate as long as the core of the gameplay or story is good. This was the first time that it was actively hard for me to overlook. The other issue is the lack of consistency with certain bugs, most notably corrupted save files. It has a affected very few accounts, but as far as I’m aware no one has been able to pinpoint the exact cause. I overall have enjoyed playing the game either alone or with friends. Some of that enjoyment had come with either myself or my friends actively bewildered at how awful the game looks or runs. I love Pokémon and just wish they would put forth the effort it deserves. TLDR: Gameplay is fun if you like Pokémon games. The game runs terribly and has a wide variety of bugs, but is “playable.” I hope they fix it.

LillePipp

If you ask me, I don’t think Scarlet and Violet really have anything to offer. A lot of people think that the criticism boil down to only the technical issues; and while the game is immensely poorly optimized and frankly makes an embarrassment out of Game Freak, the issues go a lot further than that. They aren’t the worst Pokémon games, but they are the ones that have convinced me that this franchise is no longer worth supporting. The world is completely barren with absolutely nothing to do beyond the main story and nothing else to discover. The structure of the game is objectively bad because it is balanced like a very linear game whilst having no sense of direction and placing events that should be around the same challenge level at the other side of the map. And Scarlet and Violet continue the trend of slowly stripping away features for the sole purpose of removing player autonomy because “you are going to play Scarlet and Violet exactly the way we want you to and if you try to enjoy it in any other way we will do anything without our power to make your playstyle as inconvenient as possible”. If all you look for in a Pokémon game is simply seeing the new Pokémon whilst steamrolling through a game that basically plays itself while you are just along for the ride as you travel though ghost towns with no sense of history or culture, then sure, Scarlet and Violet are fun. If you want to play a game that isn’t more broken than Red and Blue, a game that offers gameplay that makes your decisions actually feel like they matter, a game that visually looks up to date, a game with a rich world to discover and engage in, then you might look anywhere else

techzilla

What make Pokemon great was that it was not BOTW, it was linear, and that allowed developers to jam pack each part and make it all feel alive. While BOTW is awesome to explore around for while, it gets tedious, and you get lost constantly. I don't like how BOTW has no sense of inside or outside, that made SV so much worse than it would have otherwise been. GF just doesn't work as a BOTW style game producer, and pokemon doesn't really work that way too well either. You should play pokemon the way it was designed to be played, but you should be able to customize how you played it, along with your team.

blackjackgabbiani

You have almost more autonomy here than anywhere else in the series. You can do anything at any time.

[deleted]

Except other than the main quest, there is nothing to do. The world is empty, other than random raids, TMs and item pickups. There are no grandiose discoveries like in let's say Elden Ring and Breath of the Wild. Barely any secret events, bosses, buildings, etc. All the cities/towns are super forgettable and they're pretty much all the same (Pokemon Center, 10 Sandwich shops and a barber) The worst thing is that even the order of the gyms is not "free" because if you do it wrong, you'll either be facing gym leaders 10-40 levels below your team, or the other way around.

blackjackgabbiani

Oh? I like just exploring and running around. Seems like there's something fun around every corner. It reminds me of running around the woods as a kid. Even if there was "nothing there" it was still fun to do.

LillePipp

In terms of which order to challenge things, yes. That’s what I meant about the structure of the game; while allowing the player to tackle any challenge in whatever order they please is a good step, the problem in SV is that the game very clearly wants you to take a certain path since the rest of the game doesn’t scale accordingly, but the game never tells you this, and effectively makes this choice meaningless. It is a non-linear game that is 100 % balanced like a linear game, which is to say that it is not balanced at all. But aside from that, this game does not provide player autonomy. The missing toggle for the Exp. Share is gone, now they have removed Set mode, the Evolution option from Legends Arceus is gone; basically the only meaningful thing the game offers in terms of player autonomy is what Pokémon you can use, and even then, every game prior to Gen 8 does this better

blackjackgabbiani

Evolution option from PLA?

hammondismydaddy

Standalone? It's OK. Coming from a multi-billion dollar company and the largest media franchise ever seen on the face of the planet? Pathetic. The fact that the game is still riddled with bugs, FPS issues and broken raids (one of the core features of the game) is absolutely disgusting coming from a company as big as TPC. I am a huge fan of the franchise. I have been playing since RBY. I collect the TCG, games and various other products and SV is the first time I have seriously considered dropping the franchise all together. Game Freak spits in our collective faces year after year after year and at some point you get tired of eating saliva. BOTW set a new standard for open world games and had a beautiful artstyle. Mario Odyssey set a new standard for platformers and collect-a-thons and also looks amazing and there are plenty of other 3xA games on the Switch that look great and are setting new standards for their genres. Then there's a laggy, buggy mess with low poly textures, no new features, with extremely basic JRPG mechanics that was completely broken on release and still looks HORRIBLE to this day being put out by a company that literally has infinite resources (if they'd want to put in that effort). Unless Gen 10 shows some respect to the fans, for the first time since Gen 1 I am 100% skipping out on it.

LeratoNull

>Coming from a multi-billion dollar company and the largest media franchise ever seen on the face of the planet? Pathetic. This is just every Pokemon game, though, lol.

Bowser701

Still doesn't mean it's okay

youcantguesss

In my opinion it is the best mainline Pokémon game yet, granted I did not encounter many extreme glitches during my playthrough and also played the whole thing in handheld more where the bad textures were a little less noticeable. It’s still by far the most fun I’ve had with Pokémon in ages. Pointing out the technical issues is definitely valid criticism though even if I think people blow it out of proportion a bit. A lot of people act like the game is straight up unplayable with game breaking glitches showing up every 5 minutes but in reality it’s just bad textures and a very choppy frame rate most of the time.

These-Button-1587

It's the most fun I've had with a main Pokémon game since Gen 5. Sword and Shield didn't grab me the same way. I've really enjoyed it since it came out. Yeah graphics may not be top of the line and there are issues with performance but I've never noticed them enough to have it hamper my experience. Not to say they won't with you two but there are still issues after two sets of patches.

shamandude4

I played it. I finished it. It’s great and highly disappointing at the same time. As a kid, this would be my jam. For my own full price, it’s tough

[deleted]

They are good. My only complaint is that they cut off the option to disable battle animations. Making it consistently exhausting to replay.

[deleted]

If it wasn’t so glitchy then it’s easily one of the best pokemon games on switch. Only beaten by legends arceus in my opinion. I do think it misses a fair bit of the charm of the old games with few things to do outside of the main story and raids. But what is there is damm good.

ASimpleCancerCell

We have here a game that feels like it's held together with honey; it's buggy in major ways that can often detract from the experience and should have been afforded more time to fix the major issues before it was released, but underneath all that is a work of art with genuine heart and creativity put into it that no other franchise has been able to replicate. The way I see it, this is how the series began.

IvoCasla

And then you play the game and have the most fun you can have in a pokemon game.

Shocky1384

There are plenty of people loving it. The game is rough with performance at times, but it's not game breaking. I've played hundreds of hours and it's been fine. I've loved so much about it. I would put it around the top tier of games personally. Also keep in mind that you are on a sub reddit. A small group of people that have similar opinions, so you usually get biased comments. I would say buy it because you'll probably like it alot

Instanbuloney

I really enjoyed it personally (a lot more than swsh for sure) because it had a good story, and area zero was pretty cool. Overall 7/10, could have been better, but still better than swsh imo

techzilla

No, it's not better than SwSh, that's cult talk.

ConcernLow1979

Beyond the glitches it is a genuinely good game, if you’re able to look past the issues I’d recommend it

Motor-Win-5056

It’s extremely fun. But it’s extremely rushed

plaugey_boi

Great games

JstBeczzzzzzze

Im so glad i have really low standards for games apparently bc i've loved and enjoyed every pokemom game that ever came out, including SV 😌

techzilla

I played Violet, I didn't hate it... but I didn't love it like Sword, or Ultra Moon, or Black1 and 2... and so many more.

GER_3spectre

I barely had any technical difficulties in 100 hours of plays outside of the raid battles, so tbh my experience with the game was excellent overall

Fossilewe

It's garbage just skip it.

Daedstarr13

Well playing it now, I only get some fps slow downs, nothing major. No crashes nothing like that. The game has been stabilized but not fully fixed. But FPS slow down should be expected. It's a Nintendo game after all. They routinely have, since NES, made games that the system can't handle. It's pretty much their MO. But I would say the games are bad in general not taking any performance issues into account. They're super short, they're super easy. Like ridiculously easy. The mechanics are solid, the added features are solid, but there's not enough content and the content that is there is way too easy. They have always on EXP share from the very beginning for your whole party and the raids are a joke with how simple they are on your own or with others and they just hand out free pokemon and exp candy. So leveling is incredibly fast to where you are going to be overleveled most the time. Not even taking being overleveled into account but when your underleveled for a fight, even by up to 10 levels using pokemon that is specifically weak to the type your fighting, you're probably still going to win. The fights are stupid easy. The only time o really got stopped was fighting things 15-20 levels above me. And I wasn't trying to to be strategic, I was just brute forcing. They also made it a breeze to catch pokemon. Beside the aforementioned raids essentially giving you free Pokémon because the catch is guaranteed and raids difficulty is a joke, just catching them in general has never been easier. Rarely have I run into anything that broke free a bunch, even not having gym badges and it being harder. I caught a level 50 using a standard pokeball and a level 28 Pokémon and he was at half health. It was embarrassing. That's the major issue with the game, not the glitches or performance, but the difficulty. It's not as easy as Sword and Shield, but that was basically baby easy walk through. I have no idea why, with the jump to the Switch, they decided to dumb the games down so much. It's really sad too because of they had kept the normal Pokémon difficulty these games would be amazing with all the new mechanics. But as it's, it's still fun for what it is, which is a game for people who don't want to think at all.

Disastrous-Review-42

The easiest way to describe it an hour or so in? Painful. The animations are still so generic and bland for everything that isn't in a cutscene, and everything that is in a cutscene feels actually decent. The npcs in said cutscenes have been animated so it feels like they should be voice acted, and to be fair, this would probably have been the best one to bring voice acting in. Once you deal with houndours bobbing their heads at you instead of barking, you get tested to see if you're worthy of controlling the box legendary, by fighting a squirrel a dude caught 2 seconds ago. After which you get to see the amazing landscapes, including, and limited to, a couple trees and some flat grass ground. You get to see more as you talk to nemona than you do being told to look at it. The graphics of the environment are so general, you could probably make better looking stuff in Minecraft with pixel art. The game runs okay, but that means nothing with how little there is. TOTK gets better fps and graphics, and that game is massive, sure it takes up twice the space, but thats a reasonable sacrifice for a decent game. I know it's like comparing apples to oranges, but these oranges are mouldy, wonky, and somehow also unripe. Seeing shiny pokemon in the world is cool and useful, but it only really helps if you know what the shiny looks like. also being able to send your pokemon out to fight a pokemon without entering a battle, it saves time and helps if you're just looking for whatever the pokemon drops. The map telling you what pokemon are nearby is also pretty cool. It's got great ideas, but the way they've gone about doing it is terrible.

BluedHaze

It's very fun. I play it with my bf. Although, it's ugly af and really should have gotten Sword and Shield graphics, imo.

blu7falcon

As someone who grew up playing every single game throughout the console evolution, it is my humble opinion that Violet is the best entry to date. I get lost for hours and the landscape and scenery still takes my breath away. Also quality of life improvements are love letter to OG Gameboy players.

techzilla

HAHAHA

Mercwithagameboy

unpopular opinion, but as far as designs and fun go for me, it's a top gen in the series. My other favorites being Gen 2 and Gen 5 yes there's quite a bit of technical issues, but overall, I've enjoyed my 150+hrs with the game far more than SWSH

WhaleMan295

It has issues, yet it's still the most fun I've had playing a Pokemon game

[deleted]

It's a half-finished game tossed out by a company who could and absolutely SHOULD do much better. It's broken as hell, and while the open world is very cool, it's empty as hell. The raids are atrocious and you really have to be a masochist to grind them That said. The post-game plot is legitimately some of THE coolest stuff pokemon has done in a long time. The music also incredibly slaps, I had the post-game boss's theme on loop for a full week. All in all, incredible concept and core of a game... it just needed to bake so much longer. Pokemon Company is feeding us undercooked products full price

starskyandskutch

Yes it’s very enjoyable I don’t understand all the hate

Noir_Vena_Cava

The massive technical issues why can’t you understand that?

megalocrozma

Well I personally rarely encountered those, and even when I did they almost never hindered my playthrough and I still very much enjoyed the game. I'm not saying they aren't a genuine problem, but the game is still very enjoyable despite them.

wxrev

I feel like as long as you don't focus on every issue you don't notice it as much. The social media Pokémon community is kind of an echo chamber. Personally, I kind of compare it to frequency illusion (frequency illusion occurs when "a concept or thing you just found out about suddenly seems to pop up everywhere."). Unless pointed out, most regular players wont think about the framerate for longer than a few seconds and continue enjoying the game.

LeratoNull

Because we have seen concrete proof that the performance issues vary massively from Switch to Switch, so a large number of players didn't suffer from them? (Altho the bugs are consistent.)

Empty_Jello_2945

Everyone basing their hate on bugs and random graphical errors need to take a chill pill. I've BARELY come across any glitches over the 100+ hours I've poured into this one and when I DO it's typically hilarious and only further improves my enjoyment of the game. And I swear to god when I hear people pull out the "oH bUt GaEmFwEEk iS a MulTi biLliOn DoLar CumPanEE" argument I don't understand why shit like Bethesda gets the free pass for giving us broken garbage for 20 years straight. Glitches are funny, let people have fun.

InvestigatorUnfair

"It hasn't happened to me so clearly it's not really a problem. Don't be mean to the multi billion dollar corporation uwu" Also tell that "waaaa the bugs are funny" shit to the people whose save files got corrupted because of the latest update lmao

Bowser701

I want to see his save file get corrupted, then hope they have a good laugh about it.

Bowser701

Bethesda doesn't get a free pass though, did you not see all the backlash from 76? And SV has been running like shit for me out of the tutorial.

[deleted]

I can assure you, the people who are experiencing one of the save corruption bugs ongoing atm are most certainly **not** having fun, but by all means, do continue to blindly ignore those issues…

shirleymansbeen

It’s a little janky, still a great game, I’ve enjoyed it as my return to the series since gen 4

MasterSandwitch

The only bad part is probably the bugs and glitches otherwise it is a solid game. (Not including the horrible Violet paradoxes)

Logical_Guidance1018

Yeah. All future pokemon are robots?

LeratoNull

Beats the terrible Scarlet designs lmao, Mecha Fan W as usual

Logical_Guidance1018

Mecha hariyama is cool

ErrantEpoch

Aside from occasional slowdown and bad framerate, I think it's an incredible game.

Ok-Emu-4899

I don’t think any of its HORRENDOUS it’s a really great game with a lot of not great elements that definitely build up and effect the experience. But these days everything is either the best thing ever or the worst thing ever. It’s a super fun game with some annoying and borderline awful issues.

CManPete

Naturally the people who want to bring people down with them will be the most vocal. Most people I’ve discussed it with have enjoyed the game.

CManPete

Naturally the people who want to bring people down with them will be the most vocal. Most people I’ve discussed it with have enjoyed the game.

Far-Chicken-3080

The game looks worse than Wii Pokemon games. My main issue was trying to get immersed in the world. It’s impossible when the game is so ugly

The_Zealot_Almighty

Everyone I've talked to outside of Reddit has loved it. I also really enjoyed it. Laggy and glitchy, but still very fun.

Firestorm8908

It’s good. It should be better. It’s better than SWSH. Not as good as gen 6 and the ones before that.

Vicky81988

It’s entirely subjective. I have been playing non-stop since I bought it, and had pre-ordered it. Over 490 hours of playtime and still going

Empty_Jello_2945

Easily the most fun I've had with a pokemon game since HeartGold/SoulSilver. Everyone basing their hate on bugs and random graphical errors need to take a chill pill. I've BARELY come across any glitches over the 100+ hours I've poured into this one and when I DO it's typically hilarious and only further improves my enjoyment of the game.

MGLpr0

Personally I can't stand playing it, because GF horribly screwed up the technical side, but I guess if you can get past that, the gameplay, although flawed, is pretty good. I just can't get past the awful graphics and performance

[deleted]

https://preview.redd.it/hhlrdkdxkkmc1.jpeg?width=355&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=674290068dd28a1c34d2e32bc784b6be47468173 the game graphics be like

raptorgator0

I'm late to this and I know others will disagree, but I thoroughly enjoy Sword and Shield a lot more, especially in terms of graphics. It actually feels like a Pokemon game and to me, Scarlet and Violet reminds me of an unfinished mobile game too much and I find that I have to force myself to play it

Lazy-Prize2393

They need too bring back the old but add better looking Pokemon instead of trash that no one wants too use don’t get me wrong I’m a fan but they are going the wrong direction even the old beats the new

Initial-Ad-4876

Traversal is annoying as shit thats my main issue. Being forced to go directly up to each trainer and initiate battle myself is also very annoying. It feels like a motorcycle simulator half the time. Love being able to walk with my pokemon though and call them back on command.

ChrisNP87

The worst game yet! It could've been AMAZING! Was so excited for the Spain region... But they failed miserably.

Old post I know but I found it. I was a fond lover of pokemon blue, silver, emerald, pearl, and after that I kinda let the pokemon genre go. Then I came back to the game with sword/shield. I did not like sword/shield at first. The pokemon that are in there are so much less…. Special than the older gens. But I have come to understand many things while playing. Like galarian weezing and it’s references with the chimney hat and moustache to the country it is based on. I actually fell in love with pokemon again through sword/shield. I even played ranked, just for fun. And the raid dens were fun! Really, it turned into my favorite game out of nowhere. Really - very adviseable game if you’re autistic. But alas - the servers went down. No more online play so I had to move on. Scarlet/violet looked promising. But as soon as I had it in hand - something felt off. It was a lot less anime like feeling to me, due to the art style. I do understand it’s in the style of the land it’s based on. But it doesnt work for me. That alone hits me heavy. I did buy the dlc’s and the stories were very fun yes. But the replayability compared to sword/shield was a lot less to me as I had less fun. I’m actually waiting for a new pokemon game. One that I will enjoy more. And apparantly… it should be coming in a while! And I hope they finally add in a adult playable model. Pokemon exists for years lol. Can’t you just choose between boy/girl/man/woman. Its not that hard and a lot of people on the playerbase would feel acknowledged. If anyone has found a way to enjoy scarlet/violet more please tell me. I’d love to know your reasons because my hands are itching to play pokemon right now.

FrozenForger

Does it feel like a rushed, unpolished product? Yes. Is it still fun? Yes If you're willing to look past its flaws, it's an enjoyable game.

eruiz615

I had fun with what it had. Performance could have been better but still okay I think. I do wish there would have been more in the world, it was open but pretty dead activity wise

I know I may be really late, but I really think you should consider also playing Pokémon. Let’s go Pikachu/Eevee or brilliant diamond/shining pearl I didn’t read through all the comments. I don’t know if somebody mentioned that they really change the gameplay for Scarlet and Violet. Pokémon let’s go, you’ll get is a slight mix of Pokémon go and yellow version well brilliant diamond/shining pearl is remake of diamond and pearl I don’t know if I’ve this point you already tried the game you mention, but you should still consider the games I brought up.

Downfallian

The game was fun for like three weeks.

mewtvuhrsis56

I played it a lot for a week. Mostly exploring. Just picking it back up and I want it to draw me in real bad but nothing has yet. Just spec sized Pokemon popping in and bumping into me constantly and overpriced clothing :/

[deleted]

Core story is boring, just get literally any other Pokemon game over this one. Nothing about it is worth or excuses the technical failure of a product that Pokemon Violet and Scarlet are.

Zarathustra10000

Not sure if still up for discussion: If you want an unquestionable good time go w/ legends, it's 50h of pure blast whilst remaining a genuine pkmn experience. Last gen has a lot to like, far from perfect tho seems they confused streamlining with stripping. I'd like to know if you got them in the end and what you think of it!

Pros. Fantastic art style and open world design itself, seeing wild pokémon live and interact with the region is fantastic and very immersive, the drop in/drop out off/online co-op is one of the best multiplayer features I've seen in the game. Cons. Environmental framerate issues can be distracting, map needed one more zoom level, at least pre post game, the storyline is too loose with some of the lowest stakes of the series and most forgettable characters with the exception of the path of titans. Still one of my favorites of the series for it's pros and can be built on for the next, hopefully better attempt.

Aertenks

Idk all the starters and legendaries looked wack as fuck to me

Baxy-Waxy

I have scarlet and its very fun. but i hate the fact that you need one other person with the other version to complete the pokedex. I FUCKING hate this so much. I don't even have nintendo online. T\_T.

joeboicartier

I love this game so much I’m on my 3rd play through and I don’t think I could do that with any other Pokémon game tbh. For me regular Pokémon games aren’t good for the fact that battles get redundant and are forced. This game fixes that and I hope all future games don’t force encounters or battles.

SW33ToXic9

You can’t enter most buildings, the sandwiches interface looks worst than a Nintendo DS shovelware, you can’t even freely explore the school, you can’t really run? U need a motorcycle Pokémon, the heavy frame rates drop to improve performance are visible (normally it should only happen when you’re not looking), the game feels so lifeless, you’re constantly reminded that you’re playing a game (a bit like Nintendo 64 games), the world is clumsy as hell (hard to find your way or navigate, those new outdoorsy pokémons centers are rly strange, lots of bugs, etc.. the list is very long and I’m not the kind to complain easily usually, but this? I’ll have to pass. I feel scammed.

akusick89

A bit late here, but my experience so far with the games has been pure frustration. It's a buggy mess designed to test your patience. If you don't want to turn off battle animations, some combination of things make each round of combat feel like it takes minutes, (animation, stat boost, animation, stat drop, animation, burn/poison damage, animation left-overs, animation terrain affect) But turning animations off is boring. Use a potion, and you need to read that you just used a potion for the next 6 seconds, and once that dialog box is gone you'll finally use your potion in another 5 seconds. Designed to eat your time and sanity... AND on top of that, if you're in an "important" battle, and your opponent just needs to flap their word hole, and you can read faster that 1 word per second... I'm getting frustrated just thinking about it. It just wastes time with unskippable dialog boxes. Like, why can't I spam "A" and get through unimportant chatter? Who cares if a game can last 40 hours if you're spending half that time waiting for useless irritating crap to just be over with?

New_Recognition_1460

Disliked how there was no order to it. Should unlock different areas. All wild Pokémon being the same level ruined the game. I want open word but still unlock it and play the gyms in order

[deleted]

the worst pokemon game to date when it comes to stability, player base brainpower in endgame content, the gym challenges made me want to kill myself out of boredom would rather solve puzzles or brute force through some trainers than get in tune with my pokemons feelings and dance together shit otherwise its alright. victory road is a joke its a 20ft stretch of grass with a few jigglypuffs

Tall-League-4881

Graphics are bad

NyxTheGoddess_

I enjoy it :) with my eyesight I can't even tell if the graphics is bad lol

Frequent-Tomato-5474

i can understand the hate on scarlet, but violet's hate is unacceptable. \#violetisbetter

MextheHomoHomosapien

I played it (for the first time, replayed it really often) a couple weeks after release and I loved it, it was the first (and only) pokemon game I could finish due to its open world nature. I enjoyed the writing and the characters a lot. Sure it's not Breath of the Wild and sometimes the animations are a bit rough, but i personally absolutely loved it.

apex_player6

It’s honestly not that bad, especially after what we could have gotten. The story? Decent. The gameplay? Decent. People trash talk this game as if it’s the developers fault, but it’s all Nintendo’s fault. If this game was ported anywhere else besides the Switch, it easily would have gotten GOTY or at least got some sort of award IMO.

Short_Possibility_84

Violet was personally very difficult to get through at first but once I got to the end game it became more entertaining! The main characters definitely were memorable which is great compared to X and Y. The story had so much potential but the way each plot was isolated for the most part felt like a missed opportunity and was so very repetitive. Coupled with the barren landscapes, unimaginative biomes, boring NPC’s, roblox-like cities, it was so difficult to want to explore everything. The only area that felt magical/mystical was Area Zero and the mystery dungeon-like music was just amazing but after 10 minutes of wondering around the issues of barenness becomes apparent again. The coming together moments were so fun getting to see the results of the work was great but I felt like the characters could have interacted more. Also, I again feel like the university setting was also a missed opportunity. Could have been a pokemon ranger type situation! I played Violet and have to say I enjoyed the stylized manner they handled Miradon and some of the future iron pokemon. Speaking of the pokemon, the new pokemon felt very hit or miss! Cannot unsee Squidward, the One up mushroom, and minecraft/roblox but some designs were great! Overall, it could have been a good game but there was no polishing or generally more thought put into it other than finishing an open world pokemon game.

Hxisted

Late reply, but I felt like adding my own input. It’s just a mediocre experience in general. The performance issues and mediocre graphics are an issue. But the core game just isn’t that fun either. They removed so many features and a lot of the game (Specifically the open world) feels half baked. I’m a huge fan of this series and man, this game disappointed me more than any other game I have ever played. It’s not a game that is so bad it offends me. But it’s so average and uninteresting it ended up just disappointing

JoshuaValentine

I love the game. I think a lot of the criticism is overblown. It has performance issues, sure, but it’s a very fresh take on the series and a very fun world to be submersed in
