The Norman stans were absolute nutcases. Like, they legit tried to gang up on one kid for wanting to challenge the guy when accepting challenges from trainers is literally Norman's whole goddamn job. How the hell do these people function when they clearly lack so much brain is anybody's guess.

How does the town function period? Does he never get challenges? 

Norman must be getting challengers somehow because otherwise he wouldn't still be a Gym Leader, much less such a prestigious one. Maybe other trainers avoid North Petalburg because they found out about it ahead of time?

North Petalburg were basically a Norman cult. They hated Ash for wanting to battle him and he basically got jumped by the whole town so he had to battle them all. It was bizarre lol

To add to this, they have May face Ash in a battle and encouraged her to keep attacking Ash and declared her victorious after burning Ash to a crisp.

Don’t forget when ash finally beat Norman MAX just ups and steals the badge

Max has trouble coming to terms with it since he's just a little kid and still growing and maturing. His idol just lost and he can't accept that, so he denies the winner the prize because in his mind at that moment No Prize = No Victory... or rather, No Defeat for Norman. It's an important lesson for him that it's okay for super-amazing trainers to lose too.

North Petalburg kinda show what Max would've become if he became obsessed with the idea of his father being unbeatable and being a know it all, right?
