I love these type of threads but I really really wish people would write the names of the show or movie because not everyone knows all of them
Edit: thank you so much for the awards!!
God, i love Dule so much. I wanted to name my boys Dule and Gus. Also, this was a surprisingly good movie for kind of a kids movie. Great cast, great acting.
Omg they were my favourite part of that show!! Technically they do end up in the ‘happiest-ending-possible’ as Simon ends up sacrificing himself to save Alisha time after time, in a never-ending loop (anything past S3 doesn’t exist for me).
![gif](giphy|1vKCHVmKfAZVK)
Finnick and Annie in The Hunger Games series. I’m rewatching the movies and I know >!his death in Mockingjay!< is going to break me. They deserved many more years of happiness.
It almost certainly could have been avoided. It was plenty sad already. Even so, her instinct to do it while writing was likely correct but I can see how she came to regret it.
I bawled and it didn’t help that the bittersweet is that she was pregnant. As a person who was raised by one very imbalanced person and one who stabilized her. For me that was a worse ending. Imagining being raised by my mom without my dad is terrifying. I’m not saying that she might not have improved and might be happy for others. Just how it made me feel. I threw the book.
The first two seasons I watched I kept texting my friends and saying how awful she is and asking if she gets better and by the end she was my favorite character hands down. Best character development on the whole show.
Their breakup is BEAUTIFUL though. I hate it, I cry through it every time, but it’s so mature of Alexis and such growth from her. But yeah they’re top of the list for me
Yeah it's sad they don't end up together, but their ending was super intentional and made a lot of sense for Alexis's character development.
From season 1 she was obsessed with being in a relationship with the right guy, it wasn't exactly a huge part of her scripted lines, but they were always referencing it and how she becomes dangerously attached to men without thinking.
Her going off and doing something on her own is exactly what she needed to do in the end, I like to imagine her and Ted meet up again in 5 or so years and get back together.
Ted, after 3 years of fulfilling dream & doing phenomenally well regarded research in the Galapagos, gets invited to speak at a major environmental conference in NYC on his research & all the cool things he’s found. The conference is of course being organized & planned by Alexis Rose Communications. They meet at a dinner before the conference, both having tried to move on but it never feels right, so they’re both single. They both acknowledge, painfully, that their dreams won’t allow them to be together.
Ted gets up nervously to give his speech, stumbles over his words, sees Alexis in the crowd, kills the speech & then realizes what he truly wants: it’s her. He approaches her after his speech, moves to NYC and does his best to help the animals there.
It’s canon in my brain. You can’t tell me differently.
Oh this broke my heart!! Briony became public enemy no 1 to me for yearrrrrs. A credit to the incredible talent of Saoirse Ronan
The book and film nailed the heartbreak
OMG YES. I remember leaving the theatre feeling like life was pointless if Robbie and Cecilia could be separated like that. Never watched it again and won’t read the book. It broke my heart.
My sister and I watched that blind, never having read the book or any idea of the ending and I will NEVER forget us just blankly staring at each other after it was over. AHHHH
Me too, I watched it right after Anna Karenina, I was like I needed more Keira Knightley and oh my it’s still breaking my poor little heart till this day 😭
For whatever reason I watched this film multiple times and always forgot how it played out, only to get wrecked by the ending. Every. Single. Time. I think it happened like 3 times before I finally remembered what happens in the movie.
I had totally missed the fact that he was leaving (I didn’t really follow celeb gossip) and he got in the car at the hospital and then it showed a shot of him driving…I turned to my wife ‘they’re going to kill him?!?’
‘What makes you say that?’
‘He’s happy and they’ve shown a shot of him driving and smiling- that means death’
Apparently I have watched way too much media in my life
https://preview.redd.it/aj51fl5jmbeb1.png?width=1888&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c225193dbfa43e65e1e3765287379c67c21bbe51
Fleabag - I thought he was going to risk it all for her 😢
After watching over and over again I feel like this was the right call no matter how devastating. Hot priest isn't ready to live his life without all that structure to keep him in line and Fleabag is.
I watched this, not knowing what it was, three days after watching Atonement, which I also didn’t know the plot of. I was emotionally destroyed for like two full weeks.

Hannah and Owen from Haunting of Bly Manor!
Also, Jamie and Dani, but I feel like Hannah and Owen get forgotten about when their ending was just as painful 😭
>!"He loved her the whole way".!< That part breaks me every time 😭
Jamie and Dani at least >!had like a decade together!<, Owen and Hannah kill me because of >!the wasted potential of what could have been!<.
*~~spoilering my comment just in case.~~*
When I thinking Dani is talking about him cleaning her for the funeral I had to pause and cry for like ten minutes. Lol both haunting shows and midnight mass bring out some weird emotions for me cause I’m not a big crier normally.
I truly had a full breakdown watching that dancing scene in the Haunting of Hill House. Losing my husband is my biggest fear and that scene wrecked me. I’d never had that kind of reaction to a show/movie before
I got really emotional when they first interacted and she slowly realizes that she finally had found somebody who heard her and believed her and wanted to help.
And then really emotional at about fifteen different points afterward in their storyline…
I loved Lafayette and Jesus so much! But True Blood was notorious for busting up every good relationship they presented. Eggs and Tara being another one that messed me up. Poor Eggs.
They did her so dirty in Dr Strange 2.
Not even due to her character trajectory, but rather making it happen off screen. The whole arc could have and should have taken most of the phase
My Girl and Bridge to Terabithia are great ways to deliver the concept of grief to kids imo. I really felt awful for those kids and really felt glad I wasn't either of them.
As a glasses-wearer watching My Girl, it was so poignant when Vada was yelling about Thomas's glasses
I remember reading Bridge to Terabithia in 5th grade. My mom died that year, but I can't remember if I read that book before or after she died. Most likely after since it impacted me so much. Different scenario, but still covers the topic of grief.
"He needs his glasses!" I watched this movie again not too long ago, and I bawled at that part. Especially seeing it as mom💔😭
Off topic but Nell’s storyline on this show helped me get over a big hump of childhood trauma. It’s too weird to explain to people irl who haven’t seen this show but her storyline clicked something inside me that I’ll be forever grateful for.
Nell’s realization that she had been haunting herself… such a powerful and heartbreaking scene. The “ghosts” that we live with being our own creation in a sense. That was a scene that will never leave my brain.
I honestly never emotionally recovered from this scene. Lexi was so pure and good. She just wanted to love people. Mark saw that in her, and felt safe enough to let himself be seen for the FIRST TIME! All outside factors pointed to it being a fling or him taking advantage of her young age and sweet nature. But no! He LOVED her. That once in a lifetime kind of love. Ugh 😩
It’s funny because I loved Ten and Rose so much and I was really not a fan of Martha. But I recently did a rewatch and Martha is actually a really solid companion and I probably wasn’t being very fair to her lol
Martha is solid, and well acted, the problem is that for a large chunk of her arc the writers are just trying to do the unrequited love thing which is the least interesting way to handle her story!
Not a relationship but Donna Noble & Wilfred Mott were some of the best characters of the show ever.
Donna losing her memory and Wilfred begging the doctor to go say hi. That broke me.
After the P.S. I love you line “How lucky am I. You made my life, Holly. But I'm just one chapter in yours. “ i found myself crying in the car two days later.
![gif](giphy|Ss5XjYhVB6y52)
I still think about that episode and how…pointless the violence was. JT is gone, the lives of his friends & family is forever affected, the kid who stabbed him is going to jail for the rest of his life. 1 life taken, 1 personally ruined, and dozens if not hundred permanently worsened.
The haunting screech of Liberty’s actress also sticks with me.
Kyle Chandler’s character in Greys not getting that date with Meredith!! It’s still hard to finish that episode 😭
Edit: Another couple that didn’t get their happy ending - Alicia and Will in The Good Wife
![gif](giphy|8NqM0lWEai77y)
I will never understand why the writers didn’t make her leave Peter for Will. ESPECIALLY when Peter was cheating on her shamelessly with anyone willing. So what if it’s called the Good Wife, the point was to subvert the trope. But no this dummy stays with Peter and betrays Will over and over
https://i.redd.it/ww4m1ykqibeb1.gif
THEM! THEM! THEM! HOUSE AND CUDDY: I will never understand this, I mean I know why but even the CREATOR of the show implied he regrets it and I refuse to acknowledge it
Sometimes creators get obsessed with making sure their characters can never be happy. Because they think they'll "lose" what make them "special" if they do.
In reality, all House got was a shitty final season with a bummer ending.
It’s exactly this! David shore has basically admitted he wanted to keep them apart and not get together for as long as he could because he felt the show would end or hit a stop then. He also said it was very difficult to do that because of Hugh and Lisa’s chemistry.
He also believed in the trope House being happy meant he wasn’t a good doctor so House doesn’t do happy endings which is just so stupid. I like that the final endings episode was with Wilson and I loved their lines and what he did for them but to completely ruin House and cuddy and also Hugh and Lisa’s chemistry and all they did for them as a couple is MENTAL which he seems to now regret but it’s too late.
https://preview.redd.it/raouyifsnbeb1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55bce2db5ce256b82a5072854a7fed4ab42fcc66
>House being happy meant he wasn’t a good doctor
Yeah. I hate this trope. That's the same excuse they used to stop the Bruce Wayne/Selina Kyle wedding from happening in the Batman comics back when.
It seems to be one part the bad premise of "misery/mental illness is what leads to genius!" (As written by people who have never been depressed.)
And, usually, one part not realizing what you've already written into a character. Because they'll, usually, have had some moments or long stretches of happiness before and continued doing their work JUST FINE.
THEY WERE ACTUAL SOULMATES y’all don’t understand
https://i.redd.it/88rvttgvibeb1.gif
This is one of the biggest cinematic injustices I’ve ever faced…and I can go on about it forever.
Even though House 7 Cuddy never got their happy ever after.
I was okay with the fact that the one relationship that House did have and cared about, that he gave up everything to make Wilson last few months the best possible.
I get that and I love House and Wilson and I’m happy that he finally put something else above himself and ig was his friendship with Wilson, it’s just the way they ruined House and Cuddy when they’ve spent like the past twenty years harbouring feelings for each other since uni and it was never the right time. It’s just such a gut punch. They also ruined cuddy and Wilson cause she just left and just the TRIO we never got to see again…
https://i.redd.it/baatomq61ceb1.gif
SAME. Especially because, when they did the movie (which was crowdfunded), they both talked about how the film was basically a thank you for all the fans who supported them.
And then the reboot felt like a kick in the face comparatively. I couldn’t believe they did that.
They should have just stopped at the movie.
nell's ending in general makes me sick to my stomach (in a satisfying way, if that makes sense. i think the hill house series might be one of the the best-written pieces of media from the last 25 years). but yes absolutely, he was so good for her and i was so sad to see how it ended for them. the song that plays during their dance, "heavenly day," is on my "soft" playlist that i reserve for songs that make me want to sob, just because of that scene.
![gif](giphy|CSnWN8ETcktyg)
I know it was never really meant to happen, but they genuinely seemed so connected that it wounded me that they never got together.
There were many enraging things about the last season of GoT but this betrayal was the one that made me toss a pillow and leave to calm down lol. Then the whole bell thing made me start yelling, "This is STUPID!". Man I loved that show. Re-watching with my bf who has never seen it right now and I don't know if he is truly prepared for me to react to all the shenanigans lol.
![gif](giphy|tn8pwUPrO5iyA)
Bridge to Terabitha broke me as a child. Even if they were kids and not romantic, their relationship deserved a happy ending!
Random and possibly controversial but I was SO invested in S1 Dolores/William on Westworld. The gut-punch when it was revealed that >!he was actually the Man in Black!<.
They had the ingredients of an epic couple... and in a way they were, cause it's the memory of her love affair with William that ultimately got Dolores to wake up.
https://preview.redd.it/rwkcfnw0dceb1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76d38cdde5c79c4a4edbe6008adffeec9279c986

Roy and Keeley:
Their ending was ambiguous but breaking them up was stupid and made no sense. They had such a healthy relationship and way of working out their issues maturely.
https://i.redd.it/ovk0uslryceb1.gif
Not romance but this broke me as a kid, knowing I would have to say goodbye to my dog someday who was really one of my only friends. They didn’t get enough time together. Hooch best doggo.
Oh my god yes, Nell and Arthur. I’m the “problem child” in my family and struggle with mental illness, and my husband has a severe progressive disease. This episode fucking destroys me every time, especially when >!Nell thinks they're dancing in Hill House!<
https://preview.redd.it/0l7h6muflbeb1.jpeg?width=638&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1ba1bbaf141bde983851b3db1b4627d1669dc18
Tommy and Grace on Peaky Blinders
The scene in S1 when she is gonna sing for him and says ' it'll break your heart' and he says 'already broken'...the chemistry!!!! I will never forgive them for killing her
FWIW, as a Spuffy diehard I want to point out that despite all my angst over them, in the comics, they do end up together! Across several realities, actually 😂
My family watched this at Christmas last year: when the film ended without them getting together my mum (who'd enjoyed the rest of it) stood up, shouted "bollocks! rubbish film" and then walked out. She's still cross about it too

it's a highly acclaimed middle grade novel - it won the john newberry medal! it definitely transcends "kids" media in the best way. sam forever ❤️
I’ve seen this movie so much and I always hope for a different ending for them :(
The way she screams for Sam 😩😭

Yup, never saw a body or anything after the attack and explosion. He’s out there!!
I’ll give it to Suzanne Collins - the girl knows how to write the tragedy of war.
I read somewhere Suzanne Collins does regret >!killing finnick off as well!<

i was not expecting to like alexis as much as i did by the end of this show, never mind bawling over this breakup. this was soooo unfair
The first two seasons I watched I kept texting my friends and saying how awful she is and asking if she gets better and by the end she was my favorite character hands down. Best character development on the whole show.
I love Alexis so much that now I just watch Annie Murphy in ANYTHING
La la la-la la la la, a little bit Alexis!

He moves to NY because he knows how important it is for her to be in NY for her career and he rescues street dogs and starts a dog rescue.
Ted, after 3 years of fulfilling dream & doing phenomenally well regarded research in the Galapagos, gets invited to speak at a major environmental conference in NYC on his research & all the cool things he’s found. Maybe a little niche, but Jal and Chris in Skins. They finally got to a good place and then the show killed him off.
The early years of Skins was amazing, and the show overall had an amazing cast!
I genuinely loved all three generations, but there was something special about that first cast.
God, Jal’s speech at his funeral truly kills me every time, so beautiful and heartbreaking

I'm still shooketh. Also Sybil and Tom... :((((
I was DEVASTATED by Sybil! To this DAY.
Absolutely ruined that Christmas Day for me!
The audacity to do it on Christmas
Damn, I know he wanted to go and have a crack at Hollywood but whhhhhyyy Dan Stevens, why?!
I had totally missed the fact that he was leaving (I didn’t really follow celeb gossip) and he got in the car at the hospital and then it showed a shot of him driving…I turned to my wife ‘they’re going to kill him?!?’ ‘What makes you say that?’ ‘He’s happy and they’ve shown a shot of him driving and smiling- that means death’ Apparently I have watched way too much media in my life
My little sister was **devastated** when this happened and I hold him personally responsible.

I’m still so upset

Kneel. Hnnnngggg
Fuck you calling me father like it doesn’t turn you on just to say it 🫠
I think this might the be the sexiest a man has ever been on screen for me.
Undoubtedly. Amazing whatll happen when a woman writes a male character.
See all fanfiction
I… need to watch this show now
me when he said that 🔫
After watching over and over again I feel like this was the right call no matter how devastating. Hot priest isn't ready to live his life without all that structure to keep him in line and Fleabag is.
I fully believe you are right but my poor little heart wanted the happily ever after 💔
I truly have never been more invested in a fictional non couple - cried like I was the one going through the end of that relationship
I watched this, not knowing what it was, three days after watching Atonement, which I also didn’t know the plot of. I was emotionally destroyed for like two full weeks.
I haven't watched Fleabag, but I have watched the Thornbirds. Romances with priests never end well.

That show used horror as a metaphor for mental illness and trauma in such a brilliant way.
i've mentioned Flanagan's shows on therapy way too many times, he's helped me deal with grief in ways i'd never would have expected

Martha is solid, and well acted, the problem is that for a large chunk of her arc the writers are just trying to do the unrequited love thing which is the least interesting way to handle her story!
I think we all initially hate the new companion. I had incredible dislike for Donna, now shes a fave.
Donna is the GOAT. No other companion even begins to compare.
Yeah this is another movie I can never rewatch
The first time I watched this movie I cried the entire way through. It was exhausting lmao
JT & Liberty 😭
I still think about that episode and how…pointless the violence was. JT is gone, the lives of his friends & family is forever affected, the kid who stabbed him is going to jail for the rest of his life. 1 life taken, 1 personally ruined, and dozens if not hundred permanently worsened. The haunting screech of Liberty’s actress also sticks with me.
![gif](giphy|2mppNcumiCnZK)
![gif](giphy|LYpJJRWoON0VTjSy21|downsized) The ending killed me
Kyle Chandler’s character in Greys not getting that date with Meredith!! It’s still hard to finish that episode 😭 Edit: Another couple that didn’t get their happy ending - Alicia and Will in The Good Wife ![gif](giphy|8NqM0lWEai77y)
I will never understand why the writers didn’t make her leave Peter for Will. ESPECIALLY when Peter was cheating on her shamelessly with anyone willing. So what if it’s called the Good Wife, the point was to subvert the trope. But no this dummy stays with Peter and betrays Will over and over
https://i.redd.it/ww4m1ykqibeb1.gif THEM! THEM!
>House being happy meant he wasn’t a good doctor Yeah. I hate this trope. That's the same excuse they used to stop the Bruce Wayne/Selina Kyle wedding from happening in the Batman comics back when. It seems to be one part the bad premise of "misery/mental illness is what leads to genius!" (As written by people who have never been depressed.) And, usually, one part not realizing what you've already written into a character. Because they'll, usually, have had some moments or long stretches of happiness before and continued doing their work JUST FINE.
THEY WERE ACTUAL SOULMATES y’all don’t understand https://i.redd.it/88rvttgvibeb1.gif This is one of the biggest cinematic injustices I’ve ever faced…and I can go on about it forever.
They also ruined cuddy and Wilson cause she just left and just the TRIO we never got to see again… https://i.redd.it/baatomq61ceb1.gif

I swear to God I'll never be the same after this ending. I'll hate Rob Thomas till the day I die.
SAME. Especially because, when they did the movie (which was crowdfunded), they both talked about how the film was basically a thank you for all the fans who supported them. And then the reboot felt like a kick in the face comparatively. I couldn’t believe they did that. They should have just stopped at the movie.
I blame Kristen Bell for this one too. Her & Rob were both the ones who wanted that ending.
nell's ending in general makes me sick to my stomach (in a satisfying way, if that makes sense. i think the hill house series might be one of the the best-written pieces of media from the last 25 years). but yes absolutely, he was so good for her and i was so sad to see how it ended for them. the song that plays during their dance, "heavenly day," is on my "soft" playlist that i reserve for songs that make me want to sob, just because of that scene.

Ugh that was when I had to stop watching the show. Steven Yeun is amazing in Beef btw if anyone hasn’t seen it
I was BAWLING when he said "Maggie, I'll find you"
![gif](giphy|CSnWN8ETcktyg) I know it was never really meant to happen, but they genuinely seemed so connected that it wounded me that they never got together.

Thissssss instead we get Dylan who sucks

Like, I get it, but this is easily my favorite ending ever written or brought to screen.

I wish I could give this a million upvotes
I’m committed to staying salty over what they did to Brienne & Jamie/Jamie’s character arc. Forever. 😂
They both deserved so much better!

![gif](giphy|xTdAjr0aZ8PcSAGTqE) Um how has this classic not been mentioned yet
Random and possibly controversial but I was SO invested in S1 Dolores/William on Westworld. The gut-punch when it was revealed that >!he was actually the Man in Black!<. They had the ingredients of an epic couple... and in a way they were, cause it's the memory of her love affair with William that ultimately got Dolores to wake up. https://preview.redd.it/rwkcfnw0dceb1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76d38cdde5c79c4a4edbe6008adffeec9279c986

![gif](giphy|qfEwcSbkiwf5RP2Q1u) Roy and Keeley: Their ending was ambiguous but breaking them up was stupid and made no sense. They had such a healthy relationship and way of working out their issues maturely.
👏 YES 👏 I didn’t even realize they had broken up until they sat down to explain it to Phoebe!

Who gave you the permission to give me feels about Nell and Arthur so early in the day 😭
Oh my god yes, Nell and Arthur. I’m the “problem child” in my family and struggle with mental illness, and my husband has a severe progressive disease. This episode fucking destroys me every time, especially when >!Nell thinks they're dancing in Hill House!<

The scene in S1 when she is gonna sing for him and says ' it'll break your heart' and he says 'already broken'...the chemistry!!!! I will never forgive them for killing her

https://i.redd.it/u22kkh676ceb1.gif I know it wasn't that healthy for most of the series but man, S7 gave me some hope 😭 Love them sm
I adored them together. He got her more than any of her other love interests.
Buffy and Spike is mine too.
FWIW, as a Spuffy diehard I want to point out that despite all my angst over them, in the comics, they do end up together! Across several realities, actually 😂
Honestly surprised no one has posted them yet, so I will. Good ol’ “Bury your gays” trope at it again! ![gif](giphy|Vi26czhFwVfEY)

My family watched this at Christmas last year: when the film ended without them getting together my mum (who'd enjoyed the rest of it) stood up, shouted "bollocks! rubbish film" and then walked out. She's still cross about it too
