We don't really have a lot of them these days, do we? Or are they either just not good or all on streaming services?
It feels like romance flicks, comedies, and romcoms are slowly dying.
If they make them and we come they'll make more. I don't know though I feel like any media that is made for women gets a bit ignored by studios despite the success of shows like Bridgerton or Barbie they still don't like to invest in women lead media.
Then they are underestimating how much money they could be making, we watched Barbie, we watch shows like Bridgeton so if they make good movies and market them well they will be successful.
Yeah, very limited romcoms are being made and the ones that are out aren’t that great. We need like a Nora Ephron or a Nancy Meyers’s kind of production. Someone should tell the studios instead of biopics and remakes get all the cute boys and girls to fall in love. We will watch them at the cinema, the world is currently very dark we need escapism.
This is a good call actually. Lonely men are blaming educated, independent women for their loneliness. Maybe all we need is more romcoms in the universe!
I think that maybe due to the lack of self awareness and in the way they treat women. If you treat half the population as less than or gold diggers whose only value/purpose is to serve men then you’ve got deal with the consequences of that which is women choosing peace and focusing on themselves and their needs. Another aspect is emotional intimacy, women create relationships with their friends that meet some of their needs and men struggle to be open with each other. Till we all agree we need each and learn to value one another this trend will continue unfortunately.
My hot take is that romcoms as a whole are almost never "good" but they serve an important cathartic purpose.
Editing to add: What I sort of mean by that is that I think the more knowledgeable we get about the process of making and critiquing movies the more discerning we've gotten (not entirely a bad thing). And that in combination with the premium placed on our "non productive" time and the increasing cost of going to see or even purchasing a copy of a movie, some of us have started only watching movies that we believe are "worthy" of our time instead of movies that are just fun, or heartwarming.
Go watch a Rom Com! Suspend your disbelief! Have a silly goofy time and don't feel bad about it!
It's so strange. When I was growing up in the 80s/90s, there was ALWAYS a rom com at the theatre. It built the careers of people like Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan. I would certainly like to see more. I often crave something light and fun to watch with a relatable female lead. I don't feel that's common anymore.

That makes sense, remember before barbie they were saying who is going to watch a movie about a doll? We did and if they made great romcoms we would watch them.
100% this! It's the light escape we all deserve. As much as we could all use them, we we need to do it for the youth. How are they supposed to navigate the reality of romance and relationships with out the idealism of a happy ending and tropes?!

I was so surprised at how adorable she was in it. Not that I doubted her ability but she’s been usually in dramatic and serious roles and I just put it on because I saw a few ads that it was streaming and was so delighted in her performance
Totally agree. I just want 90 minutes of a predictable storyline, hot people, some tears, some laughs, good interior design, and Judy Greer. Just a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon with my girlfriends and some popcorn.
I’m sick of 3 hour long movies. I think Hollywood forgets that we go to movies to have a bit of an escape. A 3 hour long dramatic film that leaves you feeling dark and heavy after is not what we need right now.
I’ve read a lot of contemporary romance in the summer and have been working my way through Jasmine Gulliroy’s books this year. Lupita is who I picture as the main character in all of them.
Ok I say we get Lupita Nyong’o and Dave Bautista in a rom com now (they don’t have to be love interests for each other but they could be bffs trying to find love or they could fall in love with each others bffs)
