I’ve done all maintenance on my 991.1 and it’s super easy, even spark plugs. 992 engine air filters are easier than 991.1. Even removing the rear bumper is easy on the 991.1. Changing oil on both is super simple. They def had this in mind when designing. Love it.

MrDankky

991 has more electronics so I’d assume it’s tougher to self maintain unless you buy the special programming tools. 997 is still very analogue. I would be more concerned with the drive when considering a 911, go test drive them back to back then you’ll buy the 997.2

ButthealedInTheFeels

The 991.1 really isn’t hard you can do everything electronic with a cheap thinkdiag coding tool and the actual diy stuff is easy. Also the 991 is lighter and stiffer than the 997.2 bit to mention a way nicer more modern interior. The only thing better about the 997 is the hydraulic steering but the electric power steering is honestly great on the 991 especially with the free GT3 steering calibration (which you can code using thinkdiag)

I have a 991.2 and it is not bad to work on at all. You have just enough room to complete any project .Since the 991.1 has no turbos, I'd imagine it would be even easier to work on.

HeyItsMisterJay

I've had my 997.2 S for about 9 months now, and done an oil change, air filters, cabin filter, etc. You can leave the bumper on for a belt service too.

911s aren’t hard to keep maintained. Hardest thing that you’d be expected to do is spark plugs every 4 years. Even that isn’t hard compared to a crammed v6 FWD cars. I guess if you have bore scoring… that’s a different issue. But… Remember that 911s are produced on an assembly line. It goes together and apart relatively easily.

adiabatic_storm

What car isn't produced on an assembly line? I believe the point of OP's post was to compare two specific 911 models, not to ask if the car is generally reparable.

blckviper6

Fair point about OPs question. I’d say 997.2 and 991.1 are very similar. They share the same NA engine. Things start to change with 991.2 when they change to forced induction. (Removal of rear bumper to get to the air filters).

E90Fantic

That is exactly what I am asking. As I have been looking around I see the 997 has more access under the lid(I don’t know useful it is)that is actually what Is making me ask. If it is a matter of taking off bumpers/ panels/ etc off, that’s easy, I’m down for partial engine drops no problem. Seeing these cars and visually looking at the 991 it just seems much more crammed and I have not been fortunate enough to be in the position where I can start taking things apart, as the ones I am looking at, are not mine.

Mister_Poopy_Buthole

The engine fan shroud has to be removed on the 991.1 but it’s held on by a few plugs, you just yank it off. The bumper is really easy to remove, a few T25s and you’re free. Spark plugs are a big cramped to replace, but an adjustable socket joint and extender would make the job easier. IMO it’s not that big of a difference from the 997.2, just a few extra minutes to remove the shroud or bumper depending on what you’re doing.

Hulahulaman

You can't easily access the engine on a 991.1. To do an oil and filter change on a 991 requires disassembly of the engine fan. For an air filter change, you'll have to remove the rear bumper and tail lights. The 997.2 is the last with a rear engine lid allowing easy maintenance. Both jobs, and many other, can be accomplished without disassembly.

ENRONsOkayestAdvice

The fan assembly removal takes twos seconds. 1) lift engine lid 2) remove metal rectangle bracket in the center 3) lift entire plastic engine fan cover Sure you’re correct on the air filter in the bumper, but guess which is easier to change the spark plugs on? 911.1.

ButthealedInTheFeels

lol removing the fan takes 5 seconds. You are dumb
